The energy of ocean waves is the key distinguishing factor of marine environments compared to other aquatic environments such as lakes and rivers. Waves significantly affect the dynamics of marine vehicles; hence it is imperative to consider the dynamics of vehicles in waves when developing efficient control strategies for autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs). However, most marine simulators available open-source either exclude dynamics of vehicles in waves or use methods with high computational overhead. This paper presents ASVLite, a computationally efficient ASV simulator that uses frequency domain analysis for wave force computation. ASVLite is suitable for applications requiring low computational overhead and high run-time performance. Our tests on a Raspberry Pi 2 and a mid-range desktop computer show that the simulator has a high run-time performance to efficiently simulate irregular waves with a component wave count of up to 260 and large-scale swarms of up to 500 ASVs.
This paper demonstrates the integration model-based design approaches or vehicle control, with validation in a freely available open-source simulator. Continued interest in autonomous vehicles and their deployment is driven by the potential benefits of their use. However, it can be challenging to transition new theoretical approaches into unknown simulation environments. Thus, it is critical for experts from other fields, whose insights may be necessary to continue to advance autonomy, to be able to create control applications with the potential to transition to practice. In this article, we w…
Rendering accurate multisensory feedback is critical to ensure natural user behavior in driving simulators. In this work, we present a virtual reality (VR)-based Vehicle-in-the-Loop (ViL) simulator that provides visual, vestibular, and haptic feedback to drivers in high speed driving conditions. Designing our simulator around a four-wheel steer-by-wire vehicle enables us to emulate the dynamics of a vehicle traveling significantly faster than the test vehicle and to transmit corresponding haptic steering feedback to the driver. By scaling the speed of the test vehicle through a combination of …
This paper presents the development of a real-time simulator for the validation of controlling a large vehicle manipulator. The need for this development can be justified by the lack of such a simulator: There are neither open source projects nor commercial products, which would be suitable for testing cooperative control concepts. First, we present the nonlinear simulation model of the vehicle and the manipulator. For the modeling MATLAB/Simulink is used, which also enables a code generation into standalone C++ ROS-Nodes (Robot Operating System Nodes). The emerging challenges of the code gene…
Safety is one of the main challenges that prohibit autonomous vehicles (AV), requiring them to be well tested ahead of being allowed on the road. In comparison with road tests, simulators allow us to validate the AV conveniently and affordably. However, it remains unclear how to best use the AV-based simulator system for testing effectively. Our paper presents an empirical testing of AV simulator system that combines the SVL simulator and the Apollo platform. We propose 576 test cases which are inspired by four naturalistic driving situations with pedestrians and surrounding cars. We found tha…

We identify the need for a gamified self-driving simulator where game mechanics encourage high-quality data capture, and design and apply such a simulator to collecting lane-following training data. The resulting synthetic data enables a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to drive an in-game vehicle. We simultaneously develop a physical test platform based on a radio-controlled vehicle and the Robotic Operating System (ROS) and successfully transfer the simulation-trained model to the physical domain without modification. The cross-platform simulator facilitates unsupervised crowdsourcing, hel…

Current autonomous vehicle (AV) simulators are built to provide large-scale testing required to prove capabilities under varied conditions in controlled, repeatable fashion. However, they have certain failings including the need for user expertise and complex inconvenient tutorials for customized scenario creation. Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) simulator, which has been presented as an open-source AV simulator, is used extensively but suffer from similar issues which make it difficult for entry-level practitioners to utilize the simulator without significant time investment. In that rega…

This paper presents a novel technique that allows for both computationally fast and sufficiently plausible simulation of vehicles with non-deformable tracks. The method is based on an effect we have called Contact Surface Motion. A comparison with several other methods for simulation of tracked vehicle dynamics is presented with the aim to evaluate methods that are available off-the-shelf or with minimum effort in general-purpose robotics simulators. The proposed method is implemented as a plugin for the open-source physics-based simulator Gazebo using the Open Dynamics Engine.

Simulation has the potential to transform the development of robust algorithms for mobile agents deployed in safety-critical scenarios. However, the poor photorealism and lack of diverse sensor modalities of existing simulation engines remain key hurdles towards realizing this potential. Here, we present VISTA, an open source, data-driven simulator that integrates multiple types of sensors for autonomous vehicles. Using high fidelity, real-world datasets, VISTA represents and simulates RGB cameras, 3D LiDAR, and event-based cameras, enabling the rapid generation of novel viewpoints in simulati…

We address the problem of ego-vehicle navigation in dense simulated traffic environments populated by road agents with varying driver behaviors. Navigation in such environments is challenging due to unpredictability in agents' actions caused by their heterogeneous behaviors. We present a new simulation technique consisting of enriching existing traffic simulators with behavior-rich trajectories corresponding to varying levels of aggressiveness. We generate these trajectories with the help of a driver behavior modeling algorithm. We then use the enriched simulator to train a deep reinforcement …

According to data from the United Nations, more than 3000 people have died each day in the world due to road traffic collision. Considering recent researches, the human error may be considered as the main responsible for these fatalities. Because of this, researchers seek alternatives to transfer the vehicle control from people to autonomous systems. However, providing this technological innovation for the people may demand complex challenges in the legal, economic and technological areas. Consequently, carmakers and researchers have divided the driving automation in safety and emergency syste…

This work regards our preliminary investigation on the problem of path planning for autonomous vehicles that move on a freeway. We approach this problem by proposing a driving policy based on Reinforcement Learning. The proposed policy makes minimal or no assumptions about the environment, since no a priori knowledge about the system dynamics is required. We compare the performance of the proposed policy against an optimal policy derived via Dynamic Programming and against manual driving simulated by SUMO traffic simulator.
Simulation environments for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can be very useful for prototyping user interfaces and training personnel that will operate UAVs in the real world. The realistic operation of such simulations will only enhance the value of such training. In this paper, we present the integration of a model-based waypoint navigation controller into the Reno Rescue Simulator for the purposes of providing a more realistic user interface in simulated environments. We also present potential uses for such simulations, even for real-world operation of UAVs.
As autonomous driving technology is getting more and more mature today, autonomous delivery companies like Starship, Marble, and Nuro has been making progress in the tests of their autonomous delivery robots. While simulations and simulators are very important for the final product landing of the autonomous delivery robots since the autonomous delivery robots need to navigate on the sidewalk, campus, and other urban scenarios, where the simulations can avoid real damage to pedestrians and properties in the real world caused by any algorithm failures and programming errors and thus accelerate t…
We present a scalable distributed target tracking algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers that is well-suited for a fleet of autonomous cars communicating over a vehicle-to-vehicle network. Each sensing vehicle communicates with its neighbors to execute iterations of a Kalman filter-like update such that each agent's estimate approximates the centralized maximum a posteriori estimate without requiring the communication of measurements. We show that our method outperforms the Consensus Kalman Filter in recovering the centralized estimate given a fixed communication ba…

The role of simulation in autonomous driving is becoming increasingly important due to the need for rapid prototyping and extensive testing. The use of physics-based simulation involves multiple benefits and advantages at a reasonable cost while eliminating risks to prototypes, drivers and vulnerable road users. However, there are two main limitations. First, the well-known reality gap which refers to the discrepancy between reality and simulation that prevents simulated autonomous driving experience from enabling effective real-world performance. Second, the lack of empirical knowledge about …

There are many artificial intelligence algorithms for autonomous driving, but directly installing these algorithms on vehicles is unrealistic and expensive. At the same time, many of these algorithms need an environment to train and optimize. Simulation is a valuable and meaningful solution with training and testing functions, and it can say that simulation is a critical link in the autonomous driving world. There are also many different applications or systems of simulation from companies or academies such as SVL and Carla. These simulators flaunt that they have the closest real-world simulat…
