Rapid progress in noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computing technology has led to the development of novel resource-efficient hybrid quantum-classical algorithms, such as the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE), that can address open challenges in quantum chemistry, physics and material science. Proof-of-principle quantum chemistry simulations for small molecules have been demonstrated on NISQ devices. While several approaches have been theoretically proposed for correlated materials, NISQ simulations of interacting periodic models on current quantum devices have not yet been demonstrated. Here, we develop a hybrid quantum-classical simulation framework for correlated electron systems based on the Gutzwiller variational embedding approach. We implement this framework on Rigetti quantum processing units (QPUs) and apply it to the periodic Anderson model, which describes a correlated heavy electron band hybridizing with non-interacting conduction electrons. Our simulation results quantitatively reproduce the known ground state quantum phase diagram including metallic, Kondo and Mott insulating phases. This is the first fully self-consistent hybrid quantum-classical simulation of an infinite correlated lattice model executed on QPUs, demonstrating that the Gutzwiller hybrid quantum-classical embedding framework is a powerful approach to simulate correlated materials on NISQ hardware. This benchmark study also puts forth a concrete pathway towards practical quantum advantage on NISQ devices.
Combining the density functional theory (DFT) and the Gutzwiller variational approach, a LDA+Gutzwiller method is developed to treat the correlated electron systems from {\it ab-initio}. All variational parameters are self-consistently determined from total energy minimization. The method is computationally cheaper, yet the quasi-particle spectrum is well described through kinetic energy renormalization. It can be applied equally to the systems from weakly correlated metals to strongly correlated insulators. The calculated results for SrVO$_3$, Fe, Ni and NiO, show dramatic improvement over LD…
Using the generalized Gutzwiller method we present results on the ferromagnetic behavior of extended Hubbard models with two degenerate eg orbitals. We find significant differences to results obtained from Hartree-Fock theory.
We introduce Gutzwiller-correlated wave functions for the variational investigation of general multi-band Hubbard models. We set up a diagrammatic formalism which allows us to evaluate analytically ground-state properties in the limit of infinite spatial dimensions. In this limit recent results obtained within the Gutzwiller approximation are seen to become exact for these wave functions. We further show that the Slave Boson mean-field theory for degenerate bands becomes variationally controlled at zero temperature in infinite dimensions. Lastly, we briefly comment on the variational approach …
We have generalized the Gutzwiller method to the cases of n=>2 correlated bands and report studies on a degenerate two-band model with Hund's rule type on-site interactions. At half band filling the metal-insulator transitions are usually of first order.
We introduce in detail our newly developed \textit{ab initio} LDA+Gutzwiller method, in which the Gutzwiller variational approach is naturally incorporated with the density functional theory (DFT) through the "Gutzwiller density functional theory (GDFT)" (which is a generalization of original Kohn-Sham formalism). This method can be used for ground state determination of electron systems ranging from weakly correlated metal to strongly correlated insulators with long-range ordering. We will show that its quality for ground state is as high as that by dynamic mean field theory (DMFT), and yet i…
The question about the existence of Bogoliubov's quasiparticles in the BCS wave functions underneath Gutzwiller's projection is of importance to strongly correlated systems. We develop a method to examine the two-particle excitations of Gutzwiller-projected BCS wave functions by using the variational Monte Carlo approach. We find that the exact Gutzwiller-projected quasiparticle (GQP) dispersions are quantitatively reproduced by the Gutzwiller-projected Bogoliubov quasiparticles (GBQP) except the regions where d-wave Cooper pairing is strong. Since GQP still shows higher energy than GBQP near …

We study the effect of spatial inhomogeneity on the physics of a strongly correlated electron system exhibiting a metallic phase and a Mott insulating phase, represented by the simple Hubbard model. In three dimensions, we consider various geometries, including vacuum-metal-vacuum, a junction between a weakly and a strongly correlated metal, and finally the double junctions metal-Mott insulator-metal and metal-strongly correlated metal- metal. We applied to these problems the self-consistent Gutzwiller technique recently developed in our group, whose approximate nature is compensated by an ext…
Ferromagnetic Nickel is the most celebrated iron group metal with pronounced discrepancies between the experimental electronic properties and predictions of density functional theories. In this work, we show in detail that the recently developed multi-band Gutzwiller theory provides a very good description of the quasi-particle band structure of nickel. We obtain the correct exchange splittings and we reproduce the experimental Fermi-surface topology. The correct (111)-direction of the magnetic easy axis and the right order of magnitude of the magnetic anisotropy are found. Our theory also rep…

We study the Hubbard model with bond-charge interaction (`correlated hopping') in terms of the Gutzwiller wave function. We show how to express the Gutzwiller expectation value of the bond-charge interaction in terms of the correlated momentum-space occupation. This relation is valid in all spatial dimensions. We find that in infinite dimensions, where the Gutzwiller approximation becomes exact, the bond-charge interaction lowers the critical Hubbard interaction for the Brinkman-Rice metal-insulator transition. The bond-charge interaction also favors ferromagnetic transitions, especially if th…
We consider strongly correlated limit of variants of the Hubbard model (HM) in which on parts of the system it is energetically favourable to project out doublons from the low energy Hilbert space while on other sites of the system it is favourable to project out holes while still allowing for doublons. As an effect the low energy Hilbert space itself varies with sites of the system. Though the formalism is well developed for the case of doublon projection in the literature, case of hole projection has not been explored in detail so far. We derive basic framework by defining creation and annih…
Multi-band Gutzwiller-correlated wave functions reconcile the contrasting concepts of itinerant band electrons versus electrons localized in partially filled atomic shells. The approximate evaluation of these variational ground states becomes exact in the limit of large coordination number. The result allows the identification of quasi-particle band structures for correlated electron systems. As a first application, we summarize a study of itinerant ferromagnetism in a two-band model, thereby elucidating the co-operation of the Coulomb repulsion and the Hund's-rule exchange. Then, we present r…
Gutzwiller functions are popular variational wavefunctions for correlated electrons in Hubbard models. Following the variational principle, we are interested in the Gutzwiller parameters that minimize e.g. the expectation value of the energy. Rewriting the expectation value as a rational function in the Gutzwiller parameters, we find a very efficient way for performing that minimization. The method can be used to optimize general Gutzwiller-type wavefunctions both, in variational and in fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo.
We use machine learning to enable large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) of a correlated electron model under the Gutzwiller approximation scheme. This model exhibits a Mott transition as a function of on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$. The repeated solution of the Gutzwiller self-consistency equations would be prohibitively expensive for large-scale MD simulations. We show that machine learning models of the Gutzwiller potential energy can be remarkably accurate. The models, which are trained with $N=33$ atoms, enable highly accurate MD simulations at much larger scales ($N\gtrsim10^{3}$). We invest…
We present benchmark calculations of the Anderson lattice model based on the recently-developed "ghost Gutzwiller approximation". Our analysis shows that, in some parameters regimes, the predictions of the standard Gutzwiller approximation can be incorrect by orders of magnitude for this model. We show that this is caused by the inability of this method to describe simultaneously the Mott physics and the hybridization between correlated and itinerant degrees of freedom (whose interplay often governs the metal-insulator transition in real materials). Finally, we show that the ghost Gutzwiller a…
We extend our previous approach (Eur. Phys. J. B, \textbf{74}, 63(2010)) to modeling correlated electronic states and the metal-insulator transition by applying the so-called \emph{statistically consistent Gutzwiller approximation} (SGA) to carry out self-consistent calculations of the renormalized single-particle Wannier functions in the correlated state. The transition to the Mott-Hubbard insulating state at temperature T=0 is of weak first order even if antiferromagnetism is disregarded. The magnitude of the introduced self-consistent magnetic correlation field is calculated and shown to le…
Using two approaches to strongly correlated systems, the extremely correlated Fermi liquid theory and the dynamical mean field theory, we compute the transverse transport coefficients, namely the Hall constants $R_H$ and Hall angles $θ_H$, and also the longitudinal and transverse optical response of the $U=\infty$ Hubbard model in the limit of infinite dimensions. We focus on two successive low-temperature regimes, the Gutzwiller correlated Fermi liquid (GCFL) and the Gutzwiller correlated strange metal (GCSM). We find that the Hall angles $\cot θ_H \propto T^2$ in the GCFL regime, on warming …
We propose a new method of solving a class of mean-field (MF) models, which is based on the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) principle with additional constraints included. Next, we show equivalence of our method when applied to the Gutzwiller approximation (GA), with the mean-field slave-boson (SB) formalism (on the example of the single-band Hubbard model). This equivalence provides thus an alternative justification of the results obtained within the SB approach which, however, contains ad hoc assumptions to position it in agreement with GA. Our approach implies that all predictions of the MF SB met…

We present a Gutzwiller von Neumann dynamics (GvND) method for simulating equilibrium and nonequilibrium phenomena in strongly correlated electron systems. Our approach is a real-space formulation of the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation method. Applying the GvND method to simulate interaction quenches in the Peierls-Hubbard model, we demonstrate the amplification of initial inhomogeneities, which in turn results in the collapse of quench-induced synchronized oscillation. Moreover, we find a dynamical phase transition separating two quasi-stationary regimes with rather distinct spatial d…
Recent progress in extremely correlated Fermi liquid theory (ECFL) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) enables us to compute in the $d \to \infty$ limit the resistivity of the $t-J$ model after setting $J\to0$. This is also the $U=\infty$ Hubbard model. We study three densities $n=.75,.8,.85$ that correspond to a range between the overdoped and optimally doped Mott insulating state. We delineate four distinct regimes characterized by different behaviors of the resistivity $ρ$. We find at the lowest $T$ a Gutzwiller Correlated Fermi Liquid regime with $ρ\propto T^2$ extending up to an effect…

The Gutzwiller variational wavefunction (GVW) is commonly employed to capture correlation effects in condensed matter systems such as ferromagnets, ultracold bosonic gases, correlated superconductors, etc. By noticing that the grand-canonical and number-conserving Gutzwiller Ansätze are in fact the zero-order approximation of an expansion in the truncation parameter of a Matrix Product State (MPS), we argue that MPSs, and the algorithms used to operate on them, are not only flexible computational tools but also a unifying theoretical framework that can be used to generalize and improve on the …
A new wavefunction which improves the Gutzwiller-type local ansatz method has been proposed to describe the correlated electron system. The ground-state energy, double occupation number, momentum distribution function, and quasiparticle weight have been calculated for the half-filled band Hubbard model in infinite dimensions. It is shown that the new wavefunction improves the local-ansatz approach (LA) proposed by Stollhoff and Fulde. Especially, calculated momentum distribution functions show a reasonable momentum dependence. The result qualitatively differs from those obtained by the LA and …
We study the electronic structure of a strongly correlated d-wave superconducting state. Combining a renormalized mean field theory with direct calculation of matrix elements, we obtain explicit analytical results for the nodal Fermi velocity, v_F, the Fermi wave vector, k_F, and the momentum distribution, n_k, as a function of hole doping in a Gutzwiller projected d-wave superconductor. We calculate the energy dispersion, E_k, and spectral weight of the Gutzwiller-Bogoliubov quasiparticles, and find that the spectral weight associated with the quasiparticle excitation at the antinodal point s…
We propose a quantum-classical hybrid scheme for implementing the nonunitary Gutzwiller factor using a discrete Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation, which allows us to express the Gutzwiller factor as a linear combination of unitary operators involving only single-qubit rotations, at the cost of the sum over the auxiliary fields. To perform the sum over the auxiliary fields, we introduce two approaches that have complementary features. The first approach employs a linear-combination-of-unitaries circuit, which enables one to probabilistically prepare the Gutzwiller wave function on a quantum c…
Motivated by recent proposals of correlation induced insensitivity of d-wave superconductors to impurities, we develop a simple pairing theory for these systems for up to a moderate strength of disorder. Our description implements the key ideas of Anderson, originally proposed for disordered s-wave superconductors, but in addition takes care of the inherent strong electronic repulsion in these compounds, as well as disorder induced inhomogeneities. We first obtain the self-consistent one-particle states, that capture the effects of disorder exactly, and strong correlations using Gutzwiller app…
Except for small molecules, it is impossible to solve many electrons systems without imposing severe approximations. If the configuration interaction approaches (CI) or Coupled Clusters techniques \cite{FuldeBook} are applicable for molecules, their generalization for solids is difficult. For materials with a kinetic energy greater than the Coulomb interaction, calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT), associated with the local density approximation (LDA) \cite{Hohenberg64, Kohn65} give satisfying qualitative and quantitative results to describe ground state properties. These …
We propose the local density approximation (LDA)+Gutzwiller method incorporating Green's function scheme to study the topological physics of correlated materials from the first-principles. Applying this method to typical mixed valence materials SmB6, we found its non-trivial Z2 topology, indicating that SmB6 is a strongly correlated topological insulator (TI). The unique feature of this compound is that its surface states contain three Dirac cones in contrast to most known TIs.
Variational wave functions have been a successful tool to investigate the properties of quantum spin liquids. Finding their parent Hamiltonians is of primary interest for the experimental simulation of these strongly correlated phases, and for gathering additional insights on their stability. In this work, we systematically reconstruct approximate spin-chain parent Hamiltonians for Jastrow-Gutzwiller wave functions, which share several features with quantum spin liquid wave-functions in two dimensions. Firstly, we determine the different phases encoded in the parameter space through their corr…
The determination of the ground state of quantum many-body systems via digital quantum computers rests upon the initialization of a sufficiently educated guess. This requirement becomes more stringent the greater the system. Preparing physically-motivated ansätze on quantum hardware is therefore important to achieve quantum advantage in the simulation of correlated electrons. In this spirit, we introduce the Gutzwiller Wave Function (GWF) within the context of the digital quantum simulation of the Fermi-Hubbard model. We present a quantum routine to initialize the GWF that comprises two parts.…
Gutzwiller variational method is applied to an effective two-dimensional Hubbard model to examine the recently proposed gossamer superconductor by Laughlin. The ground state at half filled electron density is a gossamer superconductor for smaller intra-site Coulomb repulsion U and a Mott insulator for larger U. The gossamer superconducting state is similar to the resonant valence bond superconducting state, except that the chemical potential is approximately pinned at the mid of the two Hubbard bands away from the half filled.
Variational wave functions have enabled exceptional scientific breakthroughs related to the understanding of novel phases of matter. Examples include the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity, the description of the fractional quantum Hall effect through the Laughlin state, and Feynman's variational understanding of large-scale quantum effects in liquid Helium. More recently, Gutzwiller-projected wave functions, typically constructed from fermionic degrees of freedom, have been employed to examine quantum spin models in the presence of competing interactions, where exotic phase…

Gutzwiller projection allows a construction of an assortment of variational wave functions for strongly correlated systems. For quantum spin S=1/2 models, Gutzwiller-projected wave functions have resonating-valence-bond structure and may represent states with fractional quantum numbers for the excitations. Using insights obtained from field-theoretical descriptions of fractionalization in two dimensions, we construct candidate wave functions of fractionalized states by projecting specific superconducting states. We explicitly demonstrate the presence of topological order in these states.

We argue that, because of the quantum-entanglement, the local physics of the strongly-correlated materials at zero temperature is described in very good approximation by a simple generalized Gibbs distribution, which depends on a relatively small number local quantum thermodynamical potentials. We demonstrate that our statement is exact in certain limits, and we perform numerical calculations of the iron compounds FeSe and FeTe and of the elemental cerium by employing the Gutzwiller Approximation (GA) that strongly support our theory in general.

A simple and very flexible variational approach to the out-of-equilibrium quantum dynamics in strongly correlated electron systems is introduced through a time-dependent Gutzwiller wavefunction. As an application, we study the simple case of a sudden change of the interaction in the fermionic Hubbard model and find at the mean field level an extremely rich behaviour. In particular, a dynamical transition between small and large quantum quench regimes is found to occur at half-filling, in accordance with the analysis of Eckstein {\sl et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 103}, 056403 (2009), obtained …
We investigate the symmetric Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) on a three-dimensional cubic lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping and hybridization matrix elements. Using Gutzwiller's variational method and the Hubbard-III approximation (which corresponds to the exact solution of an appropriate Falicov-Kimball model in infinite dimensions) we demonstrate the existence of a quantum critical point at zero temperature. Below a critical value $V_c$ of the hybridization (or above a critical interaction $U_c$) the system is an {\em insulator} in Gutzwiller's and a {\em semi-metal} in Hubbard's approach,…
Based on a hybrid interlayer coupling mechanism, we study the coexistence of superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AFM) in trilayer cuprates. By introducing an interlayer magnetic scattering term, we solve the multilayer $t{-}J$ model with Josephson coupling under the framework of Gutzwiller projection. We show that both the SC and AFM orders in the multilayered system are enhanced and the range of AFM order is extended. The layer configuration of d-wave pairing gap and AFM order further plays an essential role in determining the interlayer magnetic and superconducting coupling phase …
The energy-dependent scattering of fermions from a localized orbital at an energy-dependent rate $Γ(ε)\propto |ε|^r$ gives rise to quantum critical points (QCPs) in the pseudogap single-impurity Anderson model separating a local moment phase with an unscreened spin moment from a strong-coupling phase which slightly deviates from the screened phase of standard Kondo problem. Using the time-dependent numerical renormalization group (TD-NRG) approach we show that local dynamic properties always equilibrate towards a steady-state value even for quenches across the QCP but with systematic deviation…
We present a new method to compute the electronic structure of correlated materials combining the hybrid functional method with the dynamical mean-field theory. As a test example of the method we study cerium sesquioxide, a strongly correlated Mott-band insulator. The hybrid functional part improves the magnitude of the pd-band gap which is underestimated in the standard approximations to density functional theory while the dynamical mean-field theory part splits the 4f-electron spectra into a lower and an upper Hubbard band.
We design a quantum molecular dynamics method for strongly correlated electron metals. The strong electronic correlation effects are treated within a real-space version of the Gutzwiller variational approximation (GA), which is suitable for the inhomogeneity inherent in the process of quantum molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. We also propose an efficient algorithm based on the second-moment approximation to the electronic density of states for the search of the optimal variation parameters, from which the effective renormalized interatomic MD potentials are fully determined. By considering a…
We explain how to implement, in the context of projected entangled-pair states (PEPS), the general procedure of fermionization of a tensor network introduced in [P. Corboz, G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. B 80, 165129 (2009)]. The resulting fermionic PEPS, similar to previous proposals, can be used to study the ground state of interacting fermions on a two-dimensional lattice. As in the bosonic case, the cost of simulations depends on the amount of entanglement in the ground state and not directly on the strength of interactions. The present formulation of fermionic PEPS leads to a straightforward numeri…
We present a model example of a quantum critical behavior of renormalized single-particle Wannier function composed of Slater s-orbitals and represented in an adjustable Gaussian STO-7G basis, which is calculated for cubic lattices in the Gutzwiller correlated state near the metal-insulator transition (MIT). The discussion is carried out within the extended Hubbard model and the method of approach proposed earlier [cf. Eur. Phys. J. B {\bf 66}, 385 (2008)]. The component atomic-wave-function size, the Wannier function maximum, as well as the system energy, all scale with the increasing lattice…

We propose a Monte Carlo method, which is a hybrid method of the quantum Monte Carlo method and variational Monte Carlo theory, to study the Hubbard model. The theory is based on the off-diagonal and the Gutzwiller type correlation factors which are taken into account by a Monte Carlo algorithm. In the 4x4 system our method is able to reproduce the exact results obtained by the diagonalization. An application is given to investigate the half-filled band case of two-dimensional square lattice. The energy is favorably compared with quantum Monte Carlo data.
Recent improvements in control of quantum systems make it seem feasible to finally build a quantum computer within a decade. While it has been shown that such a quantum computer can in principle solve certain small electronic structure problems and idealized model Hamiltonians, the highly relevant problem of directly solving a complex correlated material appears to require a prohibitive amount of resources. Here, we show that by using a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm that incorporates the power of a small quantum computer into a framework of classical embedding algorithms, the electronic s…
