We have theoretically studied how resonant spin wave modes in an elliptical nanomagnet are affected by fabrication defects, such as small local thickness variations. Our results indicate that defects of this nature, which can easily result from the fabrication process, or are sometimes deliberately introduced during the fabrication process, will significantly alter the frequencies, magnetic field dependence of the frequencies, and the power and phase profiles of the resonant spin wave modes. They can also spawn new resonant modes and quench existing ones. All this has important ramifications for multi-device circuits based on spin waves, such as phase locked oscillators for neuromorphic computing, where the device-to-device variability caused by defects can be inhibitory.
We theoretically study the effect of a material defect (material void) on switching errors associated with magneto-elastic switching of magnetization in elliptical magnetostrictive nanomagnets having in-plane magnetic anisotropy. We find that the error probability increases significantly in the presence of the defect, indicating that magneto-elastic switching is particularly vulnerable to material imperfections. Curiously, there is a critical stress value that gives the lowest error probability in both defect-free and defective nanomagnets. The critical stress is much higher in defective nanom…
We report here the results of micromagnetic simulations of square artificial spin ice (ASI) systems with defects. The defects are introduced by misaligning of a nanomagnet at the vertex. In these defective systems, we are able to stabilize emergent monopole-like state by applying a small external field. We observe a systematic change of dipolar energies of the systems with varying misalignment angle. The fields at which the emergent monopoles are created vary linearly with the dipolar energies of the systems. Our results clearly show that the magnetization reversal of the ASI systems is intric…
We discuss elementary topological defects in soft magnetic nanoparticles in the thin-film geometry. In the limit dominated by magnetostatic forces the low-energy defects are vortices (winding number n = +1), cross ties (n = -1), and edge defects with n = -1/2. We obtain topological constraints on the possible composition of domain walls. The simplest domain wall in this regime is composed of two -1/2 edge defects and a vortex, in accordance with observations and numerics.
We study the dynamics of molecular nanomagnets through a fully quantum mechanical model describing high-spin and high-anisotropy magnetic molecules subjected to a time-dependent magnetic field along the quantization axis, which continuously inverts the population of spin states. Crystals of molecular nanomagnets placed inside a resonant cavity interact with a quantized electromagnetic field. Relaxation of excited states takes place by means of spin-photon interaction, allowing stimulated emission of radiation and creating a maser effect.
Nanomagnets with small shape anisotropy energy barriers on the order of the thermal energy have unstable magnetization that fluctuates randomly in time. They have recently emerged as promising hardware platforms for stochastic computing and machine learning because the random magnetization states can be harnessed for probabilistic bits. Here, we have studied how the statistics of the magnetization fluctuations (e.g. the power spectral density) is affected by (i) moderate variations in the barrier height of the nanomagnet and (ii) the presence of structural defects, in order to assess how robus…
Much attention has been focused on the design of low barrier nanomagnets (LBM), whose magnetizations vary randomly in time owing to thermal noise, for use in binary stochastic neurons (BSN) which are hardware accelerators for machine learning. The performance of BSNs depend on two important parameters: the correlation time associated with the random magnetization dynamics in a LBM, and the spin-polarized pinning current which stabilizes the magnetization of a LBM in a chosen direction within a chosen time. Here, we show that common fabrication defects in LBMs make these two parameters unpredic…
A model for describing structural pointlike defects in nanoscaled ferromagnetic materials is presented. Its details are explicitly developed whenever interacting with a vortex-like state comprised in a thin nanodisk. Among others, our model yields results for the vortex equilibrium position under the influence of several defects along with an external magnetic field in good qualitative agreement with experiments. We also discuss how such defects may affect the vortex motion, like its gyrotropic oscillation and dynamical polarization reversal.
Magneto-elastic (straintronic) switching of bistable magnetostrictive nanomagnets is an extremely energy-efficient switching methodology for (magnetic) binary switches that has recently attracted widespread attention because of its potential application in ultra-low-power digital computing hardware. Unfortunately, this modality of switching is also error very prone at room temperature. Theoretical studies of switching error probability of magneto-elastic switches have predicted probabilities ranging from 10E-8-10E-3 at room temperature for ideal, defect-free nanomagnets, but experiments with r…
We report the possibility of achieving an order of magnitude reduction in the energy dissipation needed to write bits in perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions (p-MTJs) by simulating the magnetization dynamics under a combination of resonant surface acoustic waves (r-SAW) and spin-transfer-torque (STT). The magnetization dynamics were simulated using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation under macrospin assumption with the inclusion of thermal noise. The resonant magnetization dynamics in the magnetostrictive nanomagnet build over few 10s of cycles of SAW application that drives the magnetizat…
We discuss the structure of the so-called "vortex" domain walls in soft magnetic nanoparticles. A wall of this kind is a composite object consisting of three elementary topological defects: two edge defects with winding numbers -1/2 and a vortex with a winding number +1 between them. We provide a qualitative model accounting for the energetics of such a domain wall.
We demonstrate on-chip resonant driving of large cone-angle magnetization precession of an individual nanoscale permalloy element. Strong driving is realized by locating the element in close proximity to the shorted end of a coplanar strip waveguide, which generates a microwave magnetic field. We used a microwave frequency modulation method to accurately measure resonant changes of the dc anisotropic magnetoresistance. Precession cone angles up to $9^{0}$ are determined with better than one degree of resolution. The resonance peak shape is well-described by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation…
Probabilistic (p-) bits implemented with low energy barrier nanomagnets (LBMs) have recently gained attention because they can be leveraged to perform some computational tasks very efficiently. Although more error-resilient than Boolean computing, p-bit based computing employing LBMs is, however, not completely immune to defects and device-to-device variations. In some tasks (e.g. binary stochastic neurons for machine learning and p-bits for population coding), extended defects, such as variation of the LBM thickness over a significant fraction of the surface, can impair functionality. In this…
A novel on-chip extreme sub-wavelength "acoustic antenna" whose radiation efficiency is ~50 times larger than the theoretical limit for a resonantly driven antenna is demonstrated. The antenna is composed of magnetostrictive nanomagnets deposited on a piezoelectric substrate. The nanomagnets are partially in contact with a heavy metal (Pt) nanostrip. Passage of alternating current through the nanostrip exerts alternating spin-orbit torque on the nanomagnets and periodically rotates their magnetizations. During the rotation, the magnetostrictive nanomagnets expand and contract, thereby setting …
The sensitivity of Circularly polarized X ray Resonant Magnetic Scattering (CXRMS) to chiral asymmetry has been demonstrated. The study was performed on a 2D array of Permalloy (Py) square nanomagnets of 700 nm lateral size arranged in a chess lattice of 1000 nm lattice parameter. Previous X ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism Photoemission Electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM) images on this sample showed the formation of vortices at remanence and a preference in their chiral state. The magnetic hysteresis loops of the array along the diagonal axis of the squares indicate a non-negligible and anisotrop…
We investigate spin dynamics of artificial spin ice (ASI) where topological defects confine magnon modes in Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ nanomagnets arranged on an interconnected kagome lattice. Brillouin light scattering microscopy performed on magnetically disordered states exhibit a series of magnon resonances which depend on topological defect configurations detected by magnetic force microscopy. Nanomagnets on a Dirac string and between a monopole-antimonopole pair show pronounced modifications in magnon frequencies both in experiments and simulations. Our work is key for the creation and annihilat…
In this theoretical investigation we address the effect of defects on thermal excitations in square-lattice dipolar arrays. The geometry of the nanomagnets, adopted from recent experiments [A. Farhan \textit{et al.}, Nature Phys.\ \textbf{9} (2013) 375], allows for thermal activation at room temperature. It turns out that excitations can efficiently be pinned at defects. Furthermore, ferromagnetic strings of nanomagnets that connect a pair of defects can be produced; their lengths are closely related to the distance of the defects and the topology of the magnetic ground-state configuration. We…
Linearly polarized light tuned slightly below the optical transition of the negatively charged exciton (trion) in a single quantum dot causes the spontaneous nuclear spin polarization (self-polarization) at a level close to 100%. The effective magnetic field of spin-polarized nuclei brings the optical transition energy into resonance with photon energy. The resonantly enhanced Overhauser effect sustains the stability of the nuclear self-polarization even in the absence of spin polarization of the quantum dot electron. As a result the optically selected single quantum dot represents a tiny magn…
In a recent paper, cond-mat/0404041, J. Vanacken et al. reported experimental studies of crystals of Mn12-ac molecular nanomagnets in pulsed magnetic fields with sweep rates up to 4000 T/s. Steps in the magnetization curve were observed. The data were explained by collective dipolar relaxation. We give here an alternative explanation that is based on thermal avalanches triggered by defect molecules (faster relaxing species). These species are always present in Mn12-ac molecular nanomagnets. We propose a simple method to test this interpretation. Note that we do not question the possibility of …
Antiferromagnetic spin rings represent prototypical realizations of highly correlated, low-dimensional systems. Here we theoretically show how the introduction of magnetic defects by controlled chemical substitutions results in a strong spatial modulation of spin-pair entanglement within each ring. Entanglement between local degrees of freedom (individual spins) and collective ones (total ring spins) are shown to coexist in exchange-coupled ring dimers, as can be deduced from general symmetry arguments. We verify the persistence of these features at finite temperatures, and discuss them in ter…
Using extensive numerical simulations, we probe the magnetization switching in two-dimensional artificial spin ice (ASI) system consisting of peanut-shaped nanomagnets. We also investigated the effect of the external magnetic field on the degeneracy of the magnetic states in such a system. The switching field is found to be one order smaller in the proposed ASI system with peanut-shaped nanomagnets as compared to the conventionally used highly-anisotropic nanoisland such as elliptically shaped nanomagnets. The metastable 2-in/2-out (Type II) magnetic state is robust at the remanence. We are al…
Magnetic damping is a key metric for emerging technologies based on magnetic nanoparticles, such as spin torque memory and high-resolution biomagnetic imaging. Despite its importance, understanding of magnetic dissipation in nanoscale ferromagnets remains elusive, and the damping is often treated as a phenomenological constant. Here we report the discovery of a giant frequency-dependent nonlinear damping that strongly alters the response of a nanoscale ferromagnet to spin torque and microwave magnetic field. This novel damping mechanism originates from three-magnon scattering that is strongly …
The strong influence of nuclear spins on resonant quantum tunneling in the molecular cluster Fe_8 is demonstrated for the first time by comparing the relaxation rate of the standard Fe_8 sample with two isotopic modified samples: (i) 56_Fe is replaced by 57_Fe, and (ii) a fraction of 1_H is replaced by 2_H. By using a recently developed "hole digging" method, we measured an intrinsic broadening which is driven by the hyperfine fields. Our measurements are in good agreement with numerical hyperfine calculations. For T > 1.5 K, the influence of nuclear spins on the relaxation rate is less import…
The stable vortex state that occurs in micron-scale magnetic disks is one of the most interesting and potentially useful phenomenon in nanomagnetism. A variety of tools have been applied to study the vortex state, and collective spin excitations corresponding to harmonic motion of the vortex, but to-date these tools have measured either strongly driven vortex resonances or have been unable to simultaneously measure static properties such as the magnetization. Here we show that by combining the sensitivity of cavity optomechanics with the technique of torque mixing resonance spectroscopy, we ar…
Photonic structures in diamond are key to most of its application in quantum technology. Here, we demonstrate tapered nano-waveguides structured directly onto the diamond substrate hosting shallow-implanted nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers. By optimization based on simulations and precise experimental control of the geometry of these pillar-shaped nano-waveguides, we achieve a net photon flux up to ~ $1.7 \cdot 10^6 /s$. This presents the brightest monolithic bulk diamond structure based on single NV centers so far. We observe no impact on excited state lifetime and electronic spin dephasing time…
To realize spin wave logic gates programmable phase inverters are essential. We image with phase-resolved Brillouin light scattering microscopy propagating spin waves in a one-dimensional magnonic crystal consisting of dipolarly coupled magnetic nanostripes. We demonstrate phase shifts upon a single nanostripe of opposed magnetization. Using micromagnetic simulations we model our experimental finding in a wide parameter space of bias fields and wave vectors. We find that low-loss phase inversion is achieved, when the internal field of the oppositely magnetized nanostripe is tuned such that the…
Magnetization measurements of a truly axial symmetry Mn12-tBuAc molecular nanomagnet with a spin ground state of S = 10 show resonance tunneling. This compound has the same magnetic anisotropy as Mn12-Ac but the molecules are better isolated and the crystals have less disorder and a higher symmetry. Hysteresis loop measurements at several temperatures reveal a well-resolved step fine-structure which is due to level crossings of excited states. All step positions can be modeled by a simple spin Hamiltonian. The crossover between thermally assisted and pure quantum tunneling can be investigated …
An accurate experimental characterization of finite antiferromagnetic (AF) spin chains is crucial for controlling and manipulating their magnetic properties and quantum states for potential applications in spintronics or quantum computation. In particular, finite AF chains are expected to show a different magnetic behaviour depending on their length and topology. Molecular AF rings are able to combine the quantum-magnetic behaviour of AF chains with a very remarkable tunability of their topological and geometrical properties. In this work we measure the $^{53}$Cr-NMR spectra of the Cr$_{8}$Cd …
We report angular-dependent spin-wave spectroscopy on kagome artificial spin ice made of large arrays of interconnected Ni80Fe20 nanobars. Spectra taken in saturated and disordered states exhibit a series of resonances with characteristic in-plane angular dependencies. Micromagnetic simulations allow us to interpret characteristic resonances of a two-step magnetization reversal of the nanomagnets. The dynamic properties are consistent with topological defects that are provoked via a magnetic field applied at specific angles. Simulations that we performed on previously investigated kagome artif…

They also offer a span of exotic phenomena and stern challenges. The progress in the magnetization dynamics of single nanomagnets and one- and two-dimensional arrays of nanostructures in the form of dots, antidots, nanoparticles, binary and bicomponent structures and patterned multilayers have been presented. Progress in unconventional and new structures like artificial spin ice and three-dimensional nanomagnets and spin…
Understanding the stability limitations and defect formation mechanisms in 2D magnets is essential for their utilization in spintronic and memory technologies. Here, we correlate defects in mono- to multilayer CrSBr with their structural, vibrational and magnetic properties. We use resonant Raman scattering to reveal distinct vibrational defect signatures. In pristine CrSBr, we show that bromine atoms mediate vibrational interlayer coupling, allowing for distinguishing between surface and bulk defect modes. We show that environmental exposure causes drastic degradation in monolayers, with the …

We calculate the double resonant (DR) Raman spectrum of graphene, and determine the lines associated to both phonon-defect processes, and two-phonons ones. Phonon and electronic dispersions reproduce calculations based on density functional theory corrected with GW. Electron-light, -phonon, and -defect scattering matrix elements and the electronic linewidth are explicitly calculated. Defect-induced processes are simulated by considering different kind of idealized defects. For an excitation energy of $ε_L=2.4$ eV, the agreement with measurements is very good and calculations reproduce: the rel…
A detailed understanding of charged defects in two-dimensional semiconductors is needed for the development of ultrathin electronic devices. Here, we study negatively charged acceptor impurities in monolayer WS$_2$ using a combination of scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and large-scale atomistic electronic structure calculations. We observe several localized defect states of hydrogenic wave function character in the vicinity of the valence band edge. Some of these defect states are bound, while others are resonant. The resonant states result from the multi-valley valence band structure of WS$_…
Atomic clusters attached to a low-dimensional system, called Fano defects, produce rich wave interferences. In this work, we analytically found an enhanced thermoelectric figure-of-merit (ZT) in periodic atomic chains with Fano defects, compared to those without such defects. We further study self-assembled DNA-like systems with periodic and quasiperiodically placed Fano defects by using a real-space renormalization method developed for the Kubo-Greenwood formula, in which tight-binding and Born models are respectively used for the electric and lattice thermal conductivities. The results revea…
Conversion of electric current into heat involves microscopic processes that operate on nanometer length-scales and release minute amounts of power. While central to our understanding of the electrical properties of materials, individual mediators of energy dissipation have so far eluded direct observation. Using scanning nano-thermometry with sub-micro K sensitivity we visualize and control phonon emission from individual atomic defects in graphene. The inferred electron-phonon 'cooling power spectrum' exhibits sharp peaks when the Fermi level comes into resonance with electronic quasi-bound …
We report the first study of the micro-SQUID response of a molecular system to electromagnetic radiation. The advantages of our micro-SQUID technique in respect to pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques consist in the possibility to perform time-resolved experiments (below 1 ns) on submicrometer sizes samples (about 1000 spins) at low temperature (below 100 mK). Resonant photon absorption in the GHz range was observed via low temperature micro-SQUID magnetization measurements of the spin ground state S = 1/2 of the molecular complex V15. The line-width essentially results from…
We present computations of the thermal Hall coefficient of phonons scattering off a defect with multiple energy levels. Using a microscopic formulation based on the Kubo formula, we find that the leading contribution perturbative in the phonon-defect coupling is proportional to the phonon lifetime, and has a `side-jump' interpretation. Consequently, the thermal Hall angle is independent of the phonon lifetime. The contribution to the thermal Hall coefficient is at resonance when the phonon energy equals a defect level spacing. Our results are obtained for three different defect models, which a…
We present measurements of the $D''$ Raman mode in graphene and carbon nanotubes at different laser excitation energies. The Raman mode around 1050 - 1150\,cm$^{-1}$ originates from a double-resonant scattering process of longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons with defects. We investigate its dependence on laser excitation energy, on the number of graphene layers and on the carbon nanotube diameter. We assign this Raman mode to so-called 'inner' processes with resonant phonons mainly from the $Γ-K$ high-symmetry direction. The asymmetry of the $D''$ mode is explained by additional contributions fr…
We have recently shown that by using a scaling approach for randomly distributed topological defects in graphene, reliable estimates for transmission properties of macroscopic samples can be calculated based even on single-defect calculations [A. Uppstu et al., Phys. Rev. B 85, 041401 (2012)]. We now extend this approach of energy-dependent scattering cross sections to the case of adsorbates on graphene by studying hydrogen and carbon adatoms as well as epoxide and hydroxyl groups. We show that a qualitative understanding of resonant scattering can be gained through density functional theory r…
Transition metal (TM) defects in silicon carbide have favorable spin coherence properties and are suitable as quantum memory for quantum communication. To characterize TM defects as quantum spin-photon interfaces, we model defects that have one active electron with spin 1/2 in the atomic $D$ shell. The spin structure, as well as the magnetic and optical resonance properties of the active electron emerge from the interplay of the crystal potential and spin-orbit coupling and are described by a general model derived using group theory. We find that the spin-orbit coupling leads to additional all…
Very recently, borophene has been attracting extensive and ongoing interest as the new wonder material with structural polymorphism and superior attributes, showing that the structural imperfection of line defects (LDs) occurs widely at the interface between $ν_{1/5}$ ($χ_3$) and $ν_{1/6}$ ($β_{12}$) boron sheets. Motivated by these experiments, here we present a theoretical study of electron transport through two-terminal disordered borophene nanoribbons (BNRs) with random distribution of LDs. Our results indicate that LDs could strongly affect the electron transport properties of BNRs. In th…
Magnetometry and magnetic imaging with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defects in diamond rely on the optical detection of electron spin resonance (ESR). However, this technique is inherently limited to magnetic fields that are weak enough to avoid electron spin mixing. Here we focus on the high off-axis magnetic field regime for which spin mixing alters the NV defect spin dynamics. We first study in a quantitative manner the dependence of the NV defect optical properties on the magnetic field vector B. Magnetic-field-dependent time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) measurements are compared to a seven-le…
Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a prototypical high-quality two-dimensional insulator and an ideal material to study tunneling phenomena, as it can be easily integrated in vertical van der Waals devices. For spintronic devices, its potential has been demonstrated both for efficient spin injection in lateral spin valves and as a barrier in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). Here we reveal the effect of point defects inevitably present in mechanically exfoliated hBN on the tunnel magnetoresistance of Co-hBN-NiFe MTJs. We observe a clear enhancement of both the conductance and magnetoresistance o…
Vortex pairs in magnetic nanopillars with strongly coupled cores and pinning of one of the cores by a morphological defect, are used to perform resonant pinning spectroscopy, in which a microwave excitation applied to the nanopillar produces pinning or depinning of the cores only when the excitation is in resonance with the rotational or gyrational eigenmodes of the specific initial state of the core-core pair. The shift in the eigenmode frequencies between the pinned and depinned states is determined experimentally and explained theoretically, and illustrates the potential for multi-core spin…
We study tunneling between a localized defect state and a conduction band in the presence of strong electron-electron and electron-phonons interactions. We derive the tunneling rate as a function of the position of the defect energy level relative to the Fermi energy of conduction electrons. We argue that our results can explain the large tunneling timescales observed in experiments on random telegraph signals in ${\rm Si}$ metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors.
An analytical study is presented of the double resonant Raman scattering process in graphene, responsible for the D and D$^{\prime}$ features in the Raman spectra. This work yields analytical expressions for the D and D$^{\prime}$ integrated Raman intensities that explicitly show the dependencies on laser energy, defect concentration, and electronic lifetime. Good agreement is obtained between the analytical results and experimental measurements on samples with increasing defect concentrations and at various laser excitation energies. The use of Raman spectroscopy to identify the nature of def…
We report the observation of strong coupling of a macroscopic ensemble of ~10^{16} Fe_8 molecular nanomagnets to the resonant mode of a microwave cavity. We use millimeter-wave spectroscopy to measure the splitting of the system's resonant frequency induced by the coupling between the spins and the cavity mode. The magnitude of this splitting is found to scale with Sqrt[N], where N is the number of collectively coupled spins. We control N by changing the system's temperature and, thereby, the populations of the relevant spin energy levels. Strong coupling is observed for two distinct transitio…
A microscopic approach is developed to scattering of surface states from a non-magnetic linear defect at a surface with strong spin-orbit interaction. Spin-selective reflection resonances in scattering of Rashba-split surface states by an atomic stripe are theoretically discovered in a proof-of-principle calculation for a model crystal potential. Spin-filtering properties of such linear defects are analyzed within an envelope-function formalism for a perturbed surface based on the Rashba Hamiltonian. The continuous Rashba model is found to be in full accord with the microscopic theory, which r…
In this paper, we study the photoinduced switching of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center between two different charge states - negative (NV-) and neutral (NV0) at liquid helium temperature. The conversion of NV- to NV0 on a single defect is experimentally proven and its rate scales quadratically with power under resonant excitation. In addition, we found that resonant excitation of the neutral NV changes the charge state, recovering its negative configuration. This type of conversion significantly improves spectral stability of NV- defect and allows high fidelity initialization of the spin qubit…
We address the characterization of molecular nanomagnets at the quantum level and analyze the performance of local measurements in estimating the physical parameters in their spin Hamiltonians. To this aim, we compute key quantities in quantum estimation theory, such as the classical and the quantum Fisher information, in the prototypical case of an heterometallic antiferromagnetic ring. We show that local measurements, performed only on a portion of the molecule, allow a precise estimate of the parameters related to both magnetic defects and avoided level crossings.
The silicon monovacancy in 4H-SiC is a promising candidate for solid-state quantum information processing. We perform high-resolution optical spectroscopy on single V2 defects at cryogenic temperatures. We find favorable low temperature optical properties that are essential for optical readout and coherent control of its spin and for the development of a spin-photon interface. The common features among individual defects include two narrow, nearly lifetime-limited optical transitions that correspond to $m_s{=}\pm 3/2$ and $m_s{=}\pm 1/2$ spin states with no discernable zero-field splitting flu…
We describe the electronic conductivity, as a function of the Fermi energy, in the Bernal bilayer graphene (BLG) in presence of a random distribution of vacancies that simulate resonant adsorbates. We compare it to monolayer (MLG) with the same defect concentrations. These transport properties are related to the values of fundamental length scales such as the elastic mean free path $L_{e}$, the localization length $ξ$ and the inelastic mean free path $L_{i}$. Usually the later, which reflect the effect of inelastic scattering by phonons, strongly depends on temperature $T$. In BLG an additiona…
Numerical modelling of coherent spin relaxation in nanomagnets, formed by magnetic molecules of high spins, is accomplished. Such a coherent spin dynamics can be realized in the presence of a resonant electric circuit coupled to the magnet. Computer simulations for a system of a large number of interacting spins is an efficient tool for studying the microscopic properties of such systems. Coherent spin relaxation is an ultrafast process, with the relaxation time that can be an order shorter than the transverse spin dephasing time. The influence of different system parameters on the relaxation …
In this article we report about linear and nonlinear optical properties of intersubband cavity polariton samples, where the resonant photonic mode is a defect state in a metallo-dielectric photonic crystal slab. By tuning a single geometric parameter of the resonator, the cavity Q-factor can reach values as large as 85, with a consequent large cooperativity for the light-matter interaction. We show that a device featuring large cooperativity leads to sharp saturation, or even bistability, of the polariton states. This nonlinear dynamics occurs at the crossover between the weak and the strong c…
