Numerical modelling of coherent spin relaxation in nanomagnets, formed by magnetic molecules of high spins, is accomplished. Such a coherent spin dynamics can be realized in the presence of a resonant electric circuit coupled to the magnet. Computer simulations for a system of a large number of interacting spins is an efficient tool for studying the microscopic properties of such systems. Coherent spin relaxation is an ultrafast process, with the relaxation time that can be an order shorter than the transverse spin dephasing time. The influence of different system parameters on the relaxation process is analysed. The role of the sample geometry on the spin relaxation is investigated.
new defect-assisted mechanism of multiphonon intraband carrier relaxation in semiconductor quantum dots, where the carrier is found in a coherent superposition of the initial, final, and defect states, is proposed. It is shown that this mechanism is capable of explaining the observed trends in temperature dependences of the intraband relaxation rates for PbSe and CdSe colloidal nanocrystal quantum dots.
A longstanding goal of spintronics is to inject, coherently transport, and detect spins in a semiconductor nanowire where a SINGLE quantized subband is occupied at room temperature. Here, we report achieving this goal in 50-nm diameter InSb nanowires by demonstrating both the spin-valve and the Hanle effect. The spin relaxation time in the nanowires was found to have increased by an order of magnitude over what has been reported in bulk and quantum wells due to the suppression of D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation as a result of single subband occupancy. These experiments raise hopes for the rea…
We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the nonlinear interaction between excitations whose harmonic energies coincide gives rise to a strong coupling that opens a new coherent ultrafast energy relaxation path. Instead of an incoherent decay of excitations, that should take a finite time that depends on the energy difference between the initial state and the final state, the nonlinear interaction allows their coherent superposition and thus an instantaneous transfer of the excitation over energies as large as the electron-volt. Such a situation should be encountered in many system…
We study theoretically the ultrafast spin dynamics of II-VI diluted magnetic quantum wells in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. We extend a recent study where it was shown that the spin-orbit interaction and the exchange sd coupling in bulk and quantum wells can compete resulting in qualitatively new dynamics when they act simultaneously. We concentrate on Hg$_{1-x-y}$Mn$_x$Cd$_y$Te quantum wells, which have a highly tunable Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Our calculations use a recently developed formalism which incorporates electronic correlations originating from the exchange $sd$-couplin…
We describe a broadly-applicable theory of spin relaxation in materials with incoherent charge transport; examples include amorphous inorganic semiconductors, organic semiconductors, quantum dot arrays, and systems displaying trap-controlled transport or transport within an impurity band. The theory can incorporate many different relaxation mechanisms, so long as electron-electron correlations can be neglected. We focus primarily on spin relaxation caused by spin-orbit effects, which manifest through inhomogeneities in the $g$-factor and non-spin-conserving carrier hops, scattering, trapping, …
The temperature dependence of the spin relaxation time in multilayer graphene (MLG) spin valve devices was measured using a non-local magnetoresistance (NLMR) measurement. A weak localization (WL) was observed from magnetoresistance (MR) measurements below 70 K, suggesting coherent transport of the charge carriers. Within the same temperature range, we observed a large increase in the spin relaxation time and spin diffusion length even though the diffusion constant Ds was suppressed by the WL. This demonstrated that the spin relaxation time in MLG could be significantly extended when the charg…
We show room temperature valley coherence with in MoS2, MoSe2, WS2 and WSe2 monolayers using linear polarization resolved hot photoluminescence (PL), at energies close to the excitation - demonstrating preservation of valley coherence before sufficient scattering events. The features of the co-polarized hot luminescence allow us to extract the lower bound of the binding energy of the A exciton in monolayer MoS2 as 0.42 (+/- 0.02) eV. The broadening of the PL peak is found to be dominated by Boltzmann-type hot luminescence tail, and using the slope of the exponential decay, the carrier temperat…
Electron-phonon relaxation in size-quantized systems may become inhibited when the spacing of discrete electron energy levels exceeds the magnitude of the phonon frequency. We show, however, that nanoclusters can support a fast nonradiative relaxation channel which derives from their distinctive ability to undergo Jahn-Teller shape deformations. Such a deformation represents a collective and coherent vibrational excitation and enables electronic transitions to occur without a multiphonon bottleneck. We analyze this mechanism for a metal cluster within the analytical framework of a three-dimens…
What is the complex impedance of a fully coherent quantum resistance-capacitance (RC) circuit at GHz frequencies in which a resistor and a capacitor are connected in series? While Kirchhoff's laws predict addition of capacitor and resistor impedances, we report on observation of a different behavior. The resistance, here associated with charge relaxation, differs from the usual transport resistance given by the Landauer formula. In particular, for a single mode conductor, the charge relaxation resistance is half the resistance quantum, regardless of the transmission of the mode. The new mesosc…
Bilayer MoS2 is a centrosymmetric semiconductor with degenerate spin states in the six valleys at the corners of the Brillouin zone. It has been proposed that breaking of this inversion symmetry by an out-of-plane electric field breaks this degeneracy, allowing for spin and valley lifetimes to be manipulated electrically in bilayer MoS2 with an electric field. In this work, we report phase-coherent transport properties of double-gated mono-, bi-, and tri-layer MoS2. We observe a similar crossover from weak localization to weak anti-localization, from which we extract the spin relaxation time a…
We investigate the magnetization dynamics of a conducting magnetic nanoparticle weakly coupled to source and drain electrodes, under the assumption that all relaxation comes from exchange of electrons with the electrodes. The magnetization dynamics is characterized by a relaxation time $t_1$, which strongly depends on temperature, bias voltage, and gate voltage. While a direct measure of a nanoparticle magnetization might be difficult, we find that $t_1$ can be determined through a time resolved transport measurement. For a suitable choice of gate voltage and bias voltage, the magnetization pe…
We report Hall sensor measurements of the magnetic relaxation of Mn$_{12}$ acetate as a function of magnetic field applied along the easy axis of magnetization. Data taken at a series of closely-spaced temperatures between 0.24 K and 1.4 K provide strong new evidence for an abrupt ``first-order'' transition between thermally-assisted relaxation and magnetic decay via quantum tunneling.
We investigate the spin dynamics of electrons in quantum wells where the Rashba type of spin-orbit coupling is present in the form of random nanosize domains. We study the effect of magnetic field on the spin relaxation in these systems and show that the spatial randomness of spin-orbit coupling limits the minimum relaxation rate and leads to a Gaussian time-decay of spin polarization due to memory effects. In this case the relaxation becomes faster with increase of the magnetic field in contrast to the well known magnetic field suppression of spin relaxation.
We investigate theoretically the effects of intrinsic spin-relaxation on the spin-dependent transport through a single-molecule magnet (SMM), which is weakly coupled to ferromagnetic leads. The tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) is obtained by means of the rate-equation approach including not only the sequential but also the cotunneling processes. It is shown that the TMR is strongly suppressed by the fast spin-relaxation in the sequential region and can vary from a large positive to slight negative value in the cotunneling region. Moreover, with an external magnetic field along the easy-axis of S…
Spin relaxation in the impurity band of a 2D semiconductor with spin-split spectrum in the external magnetic field is considered. Several mechanisms of spin relaxation are shown to be relevant. The first one is attributed to phonon-assisted transitions between Zeeman sublevels of the ground state of an isolated impurity, while other mechanisms can be described in terms of spin precession in a random magnetic field during the electron motion over the impurity band. In the later case there are two contributions to the spin relaxation: the one given by optimal impurity configurations with the hop…
Effect of magnetic field on electron spin relaxation in quantum wells is studied theoretically. We have shown that Larmor effect and cyclotron motion of carriers can either jointly suppress D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation or compensate each other. The spin relaxation rates tensor is derived for any given direction of the external field and arbitrary ratio of bulk and structural contributions to spin splitting. Our results are applied to the experiments on electron spin resonance in SiGe heterostructures, and enable us to extract spin splitting value for such quantum wells.
We investigate spin transport in InSb/InAlSb heterostructure using the Monte Carlo approach, generalized by including density matrix description of spin for taking spin dynamics into account. In addition to the dominant Dyakonov-Perel (DP) mechanism for spin control and relaxation, we consider magnetic interaction between electrons which assumes importance due to high electronic Lande g-factor in the material. It is found that while the effect of magnetic interaction is not important at low densities, it reduces the spin relaxation length by as much as 50% at higher densities. We also present …
(Et4N)3Fe2F9 exhibits a butterfly--shaped hysteresis below 5 K when the magnetic field is parallel to the threefold axis, in accordance with a very slow magnetization relaxation in the timescale of minutes. This is attributed to an energy barrier Delta=2.40 K resulting from the S=5 dimer ground state of [Fe2F9]^{3-} and a negative axial anisotropy. The relaxation partly occurs via thermally assisted quantum tunneling. These features of a single-molecule magnet are observable at temperatures comparable to the barrier height, due to an extremely inefficient energy exchange between the spin syste…
Can magnetic interactions between single-molecule magnets (SMMs) in a crystal establish long-range magnetic order at low temperatures deep in the quantum regime, where the only electron spin-fluctuations are due to incoherent magnetic quantum tunneling (MQT)? Put inversely: can MQT provide the temperature dependent fluctuations needed to destroy the ordered state above some finite Tc, although it should basically itself be a T-independent process? Our experiments on two novel Mn4 SMMs provide a positive answer to the above, showing at the same time that MQT in the SMMs has to involve spin-latt…
We consider the problem of spin relaxation in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a perpendicular magnetic field. We assume that the spin relaxation is induced by the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction, which appears due to the inversion asymmetry of the confining potential. Our solution is based on a microscopic evaluation of the spin density response function of the 2DEG with impurities and SO interaction. We derive explicit expressions for the transverse and longitudinal spin relaxation rates. Our analysis shows, in particular, that the spin relaxation rates exhibit {\it magnetoquantum…
We measure the relaxation rate $W \equiv T_{1}^{-1}$ of a single electron spin in a quantum dot at magnetic fields from 7 T down to 1.75 T, much lower than previously measured. At 1.75 T we find that $T_{1}$ is 170 ms. We find good agreement between our measurements and theoretical predictions of the relaxation rate caused by the spin-orbit interaction, demonstrating that spin-orbit coupling can account for spin relaxation in quantum dots.
Cyclotron resonance of two-dimensional electrons is studied for a high-mobility Si/SiGe quantum well in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field, which induces spin polarization. The relaxation time $τ_{CR}$ shows a negative in-plane magnetic field dependence, which is similar to that of the transport scattering time $τ_t$ obtained from dc resistivity. The resonance magnetic field shows an unexpected negative shift with increasing in-plane magnetic field.
The properties of natural and artificial assemblies of interacting elements, ranging from Quarks to Galaxies, are at the heart of Physics. The collective response and dynamics of such assemblies are dictated by the intrinsic dynamical properties of the building blocks, the nature of their interactions and topological constraints. Here we report on the relaxation dynamics of the magnetization of artificial assemblies of mesoscopic spins. In our model nano-magnetic system - square artificial spin ice - we are able to control the geometrical arrangement and interaction strength between the magnet…
The temperature-dependent electron spin relaxation of positively charged excitons in a single InAs quantum dot (QD) was measured by time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy at zero applied magnetic fields. The experimental results show that the electron-spin relaxation is clearly divided into two different temperature regimes: (i) T < 50 K, spin relaxation depends on the dynamical nuclear spin polarization (DNSP) and is approximately temperature-independent, as predicted by Merkulov et al. (ii) T > about 50 K, spin relaxation speeds up with increasing temperature. A model of two LO phonon …
We study the spin relaxation in graphene due to magnetic moments induced by defects. We propose and employ in our studies a microscopic model that describes magnetic impurity scattering processes mediated by charge puddles. This model incorporates the spin texture related to the defect-induced state. We calibrate our model parameters using experimentally-inferred values. The results we obtain for the spin relaxation times are in very good agreement with experimental findings. Our study leads to a comprehensive explanation for the short spin relaxation times reported in the experimental literat…
We study the magnetic relaxation of a system of localized spins interacting through weak dipole interactions, at a temperature large with respect to the ordering temperature but low with respect to the crystal field level splitting. The relaxation results from quantum spin tunneling but is only allowed on sites where the dipole field is very small. At low times, the magnetization decrease is proportional to $\sqrt{t}$ as predicted by Prokofiev and Stamp, and at long times the relaxation can be described as an extension of a relaxed zone. The results can be directly compared with very recent ex…
Spin dynamics in spiral magnetic structures has been investigated. It has been shown that the internal spatially dependent magnetic field in such structures produces a new mechanism of spin relaxation.
Current-induced magnetic switching of a single magnetic molecule attached to two ferromagnetic contacts is considered theoretically, with the main emphasis put on the role of intrinsic spin relaxation processes. It is shown that spin-polarized current can switch magnetic moment of the molecule, despite of the intrinsic spin relaxation in the molecule. The latter processes increase the threshold voltage (current) above which the switching takes place.
We study the magnetization reversal and electromagnetic radiation due to collective Landau-Zener relaxation in a crystal of molecular magnets. Analytical and numerical solutions for the time dependence of the relaxation process are obtained. The power of the radiation and the total emitted energy are computed as functions of the crystal parameters and the field sweep rate.
The low temperature relaxation of the magnetization in magnetic molecular solids such as Fe$_8$ is studied using Monte Carlo simulations. A set of rate equations is developed to understand the simulations, and the results are compared. The simulations show that the magnetization of an initially saturated samples deviates as a square-root in time at short times, as observed experimentally, and this law is derived from the rate equations analytically.
Spin relaxation between the two lowest-lying spin-states has been studied in the S=4 single molecule magnet Ni$_4$ under steady state conditions of low amplitude and continuous microwave irradiation. The relaxation rate was determined as a function of temperature at two frequencies, 10 and 27.8 GHz, by simultaneously measuring the magnetization and the absorbed microwave power. A strong temperature dependence is observed below 1.5 K, which is not consistent with a direct single-spin-phonon relaxation process. The data instead suggest that the spin relaxation is dominated by a phonon bottleneck…
Magnetic relaxation in molecular magnets under a sweeping field is studied by taking into account local stray fields. It is found that the randomness of local stray field leads to a distribution of the relaxation rate which subsequently makes the relaxation deviate from the exponential law as predicted by the Landau-Zener model such that the Landau-Zener method needs to be revised to deduce an exact tunneling splitting. The tunneling splitting and distribution width of local stray fields are derived from the experimental data for molecular magnets Fe8.
We report an anomalous scaling of the D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation with the momentum relaxation in semiconductor quantum wells under a strong magnetic field in the Voigt configuration. We focus on the case that the external magnetic field is perpendicular to the spin-orbit-coupling--induced effective magnetic field and its magnitude is much larger than the later one. It is found that the longitudinal spin relaxation time is proportional to the momentum relaxation time even in the strong scattering limit, indicating that the D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation shows the Elliott-Yafet-like beha…
Compressible electron flow through a narrow cavity is theoretically unstable, and the oscillations occurring during the instability have been proposed as a method of generating Terahertz radiation. We numerically demonstrate that the endpoint of this instability is a nonlinear hydrodynamic oscillator, consisting of an alternating shock wave and rarefaction-like relaxation flowing back and forth in the device. This qualitative physics is robust to cavity inhomogeneity and changes in the equation of state of the fluid. We discuss the frequency and amplitude dependence of the emitted radiation on…
Emerging new concepts, such as magnetic charge dynamics in two-dimensional magnetic material, can provide novel mechanism for spin based electrical transport at macroscopic length. In artificial spin ice of single domain elements, magnetic charge's relaxation can create an efficient electrical pathway for conduction by generating fluctuations in local magnetic field that couple with conduction electrons spins. In a first demonstration, we show that the electrical conductivity is propelled by more than an order of magnitude at room temperature due to magnetic charge defects sub-picosecond relax…
We measure the lifetime of the zone-center 340 GHz longitudinal phonon mode in a GaAs-AlAs superlattice excited and probed with femtosecond laser pulses. By comparing measurements conducted at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature we separate the intrinsic (phonon-phonon scattering) and extrinsic contributions to phonon relaxation. The estimated room temperature intrinsic lifetime of 0.95 ns is compared to available calculations and experimental data for bulk GaAs. We conclude that ~0.3 THz phonons are in the transition zone between Akhiezer and Landau-Rumer regimes of phonon-phonon…
We study relaxation of a spin in magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) experiments. We evaluate the relaxation rate for the spin caused by high-frequency mechanical noise of the cantilever under the conditions of adiabatic spin inversion. We find qualitative agreement between the obtained relaxation time and the experimental results of Stipe {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 277602 (2001)]. Based on our analysis, we propose a method for improving the MRFM sensitivity by engineering cantilevers with reduced tip positional fluctuations.
The effect of spin relaxation on tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) in a ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet (FM/SC/FM) double tunnel junction is theoretically studied. The spin accumulation in SC is determined by balancing of the spin-injection rate and the spin-relaxation rate. In the superconducting state, the spin-relaxation time becomes longer with decreasing temperature, resulting in a rapid increase of TMR. The TMR of FM/SC/FM junctions provides a useful probe to extract information about spin-relaxation in superconductors.
We study spin relaxation in dilute magnetic semiconductors near a ferromagnetic transition, where spin fluctuations become strong. An enhancement in the scattering rate of itinerant carriers from the spin fluctuations of localized impurities leads to a change in the dominant spin relaxation mechanism from Dyakonov-Perel to spin flips in scattering. On the ferromagnetic side of the transition, we show that due to the presence of two magnetic components -- the itinerant carriers and the magnetic impurities -- with different gyromagnetic ratios, the relaxation rate of the total magnetization can …
The Mn cluster complexes Mn12(RCOO)16(H2O)4O12 with R=CH3 and 2ClPh (hereafter referred to as Mn12 acetate and Mn12 2-Cl benzoate, respectively) exhibit macroscopic magnetic quantum tunneling. Dynamical magnetic measurements indicate for both samples that the anisotropy energy barrier is nearly the same and that the relaxation times have sharp minima at the same resonant fields. However, we show that for both compounds a minority portion of the clusters does not undergo this main relaxation process. From ac-susceptibility experiments, we report evidence of a continuous distribution of faster r…
Exponential and power law temperature dependences are widely used to fit experimental data of magnetic relaxation time in single molecular magnets. We derived a theory to show how these rules arise from the underling relaxation mechanisms and to clarify the conditions for their occurrence. The theory solves the puzzle of lower-than-expected Orbach barriers found in recent experiments, and elucidates it as a result of the Raman process in disguise. Our results highlight the importance of reducing the rate of direct tunneling between the ground state doublet so as to achieve long time coherence …
