Spin relaxation between the two lowest-lying spin-states has been studied in the S=4 single molecule magnet Ni$_4$ under steady state conditions of low amplitude and continuous microwave irradiation. The relaxation rate was determined as a function of temperature at two frequencies, 10 and 27.8 GHz, by simultaneously measuring the magnetization and the absorbed microwave power. A strong temperature dependence is observed below 1.5 K, which is not consistent with a direct single-spin-phonon relaxation process. The data instead suggest that the spin relaxation is dominated by a phonon bottleneck at low temperatures and occurs by an Orbach mechanism involving excited spin-levels at higher temperatures. Experimental results are compared with detailed calculations of the relaxation rate using the universal density matrix equation.
We present measurements on the single molecule magnet Fe8 in the presence of pulsed microwave radiation at 118 GHz. The spin dynamics is studied via time resolved magnetization experiments using a Hall probe magnetometer. We investigate the relaxation behavior of magnetization after the microwave pulse. The analysis of the experimental data is performed in terms of different contributions to the magnetization after-pulse relaxation. We find that the phonon bottleneck with a characteristic relaxation time of 10 to 100 ms strongly affects the magnetization dynamics. In addition, the spatial effe…
All-optical switching (AOS) of magnetization by a single femtosecond laser pulse in Co/Gd based synthetic ferrimagnets is the fastest magnetization switching process. On the other hand, He ion irradiation has become a promising tool for interface engineering of spintronic material platforms, giving rise to significant modification of magnetic properties. In this paper, we explore the use of He ion irradiation to enhance single pulse AOS of Co/Gd bilayer-based synthetic ferrimagnets. The intermixing of the constituent magnetic layers by He ion irradiation was both numerically simulated and expe…
Under microwave irradiation, in 2D electron systems with high filling factors oscillations of longitudinal magnetoresistance appear in the range of magnetic fields where ordinary SdH oscillations are suppressed. An unusual beat-like behaviour of these oscillations in weak magnetic fields (B < 0.02 T) was attributed to the zero spin splitting previously. We propose an alternate explanation of this beat-like structure on the basis of the Boltzmann kinetic equation, without any reference to the spin-orbit interaction.
Presented are magnetization measurements on a crystal of Fe8 single-molecule magnets using a Hall probe magnetometer. Irradiation with microwaves at frequencies of 92 and 110-120 GHz leads to the observation of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detected via magnetization measurements. A quantitative analysis of the results are introduced by means of the spin temperature. It is shown that pulsed microwave experiments allow a better control over the spin excitation.
It is known that under microwave irradiation, in 2D electron systems with high filling factors oscillations of longitudinal magnetoresistance appear in the range of magnetic fields where ordinary SdH oscillations are suppressed. In the present paper we propose a simple quasiclassical model of these new oscillations based on the Boltzmann kinetic equation. Our model also predicts similar oscillations in diffusion component of thermoelectric coefficients, which should be observable at low temperatures.
We have studied the magnetization of vertically aligned graphene nanoflakes irradiated with nitrogen ions of 100 KeV energy and doses in the range 10^11- 10^17 ions/cm2. The non-irradiated graphene nanoflakes show a paramagnetic contribution, which is increased progressively by ion irradiation at low doses up to 10^15 /cm^2. However, further increase on implantation dose reduces the magnetic moment which coincides with the onset of amorphization as verified by both Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic data. Overall, our results demonstrate the absence of ferromagnetism on either implant…
A common understanding of magnetization switching in microwave-assisted magnetization reversal is that the rotation direction of the microwaves should be the same with the precession direction of the magnetization. In this letter however, we show that microwaves initially rotating opposite to the magnetization precession destabilize the magnetization at an equilibrium and induces the switching more efficiently, when the microwave frequency depends on time. This argument is analytically deduced from energy balance equation. We also establish a model satisfying this condition, and confirm magnet…
We observe a new type of magneto-oscillations in the photovoltage and the longitudinal resistance of a two-dimensional electron system. The oscillations are induced by microwave irradiation and are periodic in magnetic field. The period is determined by the microwave frequency, the electron density, and the distance between potential probes. The phenomenon is accounted for by coherent excitation of edge magnetoplasmons in the regions near the contacts and offers perspectives for the development of new tunable microwave and terahertz detection schemes and spectroscopic techniques.
The response of two-dimensional electron gas to temperature gradient in perpendicular magnetic field under steady-state microwave irradiation is studied theoretically. The electric currents induced by temperature gradient and the thermopower coefficients are calculated taking into account both diffusive and phonon-drag mechanisms. The modification of thermopower by microwaves takes place because of Landau quantization of electron energy spectrum and is governed by the microscopic mechanisms which are similar to those responsible for microwave-induced oscillations of electrical resistivity. The…
We analyze the magnetoresistance $R_{xx}$ oscillations in high-mobility two-dimensional electron systems induced by the combined driving of two radiation fields of frequency $ω_1$ and $ω_2$, based on the balance-equation approach to magnetotransport for high-carrier-density systems in Faraday geometry. It is shown that under bichromatic irradiation of $ω_2\sim 1.5 ω_1$, most of the characterstic peak-valley pairs in the curve of $R_{xx}$ versus magnetic field in the case of monochromatic irradiation of either $ω_1$ or $ω_2$ disappear, except the one around $ω_1/ω_c\sim 2$ or $ω_2/ω_c\sim 3$. $…
Skyrmions are topologically protected chiral spin textures that have shown promise as data carriers in future spintronic applications. They can be stabilized by the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI) in material systems with inversion asymmetry and spin-orbit coupling, such as Ir$|$Co$|$Pt multilayers. The ability to locally tune such interface interactions, and hence the skyrmion energy, could greatly enhance the nucleation and control of skyrmions in racetrack type devices. In this work, we investigate local tuning of the iDMI and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) usi…
It is developed a many-electron approach to explain the recently observed conductivity magnetooscillations in very high mobility 2D electron systems under microwave irradiation. For the first time a theory takes into account the microwave-induced renormalization of the screened impurity potential. As a result this potential has singular, dynamic and non-linear in electric field nature. That changes the picture of scattering of electrons at impurities in a ``clean'' 2D system essentially: for appearence of the rectified dissipative current responsible are excitations of 2D magnetoplasmons rathe…
We show that a controllable dc magnetization is accumulated in a junction comprising a quantum dot coupled to non-magnetic reservoirs if the junction is subjected to a time-dependent spin-orbit interaction. The latter is induced by an ac electric field generated by microwave irradiation of the gated junction. The magnetization is caused by inelastic spin-flip scattering of electrons that tunnel through the junction, and depends on the polarization of the electric field: a circularly polarized field leads to the maximal effect, while there is no effect in a linearly polarized field. Furthermore…
Micromagnetics simulation based on the classical Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation has long been a powerful method for modeling magnetization dynamics and reversal of three-dimensional (3D) magnets. For two-dimensional (2D) magnets, the magnetization reversal always accompanies the collapse of the magnetization even at low temperatures due to intrinsic strong spin fluctuation. We propose a micromagnetic theory that explicitly takes into account the rapid demagnetization and remagnetization dynamics of 2D magnets during magnetization reversal. We apply the theory to a single-domain magnet …
The current driven magnetization dynamics of a thin-film, three magnetic terminal device (spin-flip transistor) is investigated theoretically. We consider a magnetization configuration in which all magnetizations are in the device plane, with source-drain magnetizations chosen fixed and antiparallel, whereas the third contact magnetization is allowed to move in a weak anisotropy field that guarantees thermal stability of the equilibrium structure at room temperature. We analyze the magnetization dynamics of the free layer under a dc source-drain bias current within the macrospin model and magn…
Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect at room temperature is one of the most attractive alternative to the current gas compression/expansion method routinely employed. Nevertheless, in giant magnetocaloric materials, optimal refrigeration is restricted to the narrow temperature window of the phase transition (Tc). In this work, we present the possibility of varying this transition temperature into a same giant magnetocaloric material by ion irradiation. We demonstrate that the transition temperature of iron rhodium thin films can be tuned by the bombardment of ions of Ne 5+…
We report achieving enhanced nuclear magnetization in a magnetic resonance force microscope experiment at 0.6 tesla and 4.2 kelvin using the dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) effect. In our experiments a microwire coplanar waveguide delivered radiowaves to excite nuclear spins and microwaves to excite electron spins in a 250 nm thick nitroxide-doped polystyrene sample. Both electron and proton spin resonance were observed as a change in the mechanical resonance frequency of a nearby cantilever having a micron-scale nickel tip. NMR signal, not observable from Curie-law magnetization at 0.6 tes…
We study the influence of the spin torque, which depends on the space and time derivative of magnetization, on magnetization reversal time in a ferromagnetic fine particle. The spin torque operates to dissipate the angular momentum of the magnetization precession, and the torque increases in a spin vortex structure. We calculate the magnetization reversal time under a DC magnetic field using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation containing a spin torque term. We found that the spin torque changes the magnetization switching speed significantly during the reversal process by maintaining a spin v…
A semiclassical theory for the orbital magnetization due to adiabatic evolutions of Bloch electronic states is proposed. It renders a unified theory for the periodic-evolution pumped orbital magnetization and the orbital magnetoelectric response in insulators by revealing that these two phenomena are the only instances where the induced magnetization is gauge invariant. This theory also accounts for the electric-field induced intrinsic orbital magnetization in two-dimensional metals and Chern insulators. We illustrate the orbital magnetization pumped by microscopic local rotations of atoms, wh…
Here, a dynamical Monte-Carlo (DMC) method is used to study temperature-dependent dynamical magnetization of famous Mn2Ni system as typical example of single-chain magnets with strong magnetic anisotropy. Simulated magnetization curves are in good agreement with experimental results under typical temperatures and sweeping rates, and simulated coercive fields as functions of temperature are also consistent with experimental curves. Further analysis indicates that the magnetization reversal is determined by both thermal-activated effects and quantum spin tunnelings. These can help explore basic …
We consider magnetization configurations at chiral magnet (CM)/ferromagnet (FM) heterostructures. In the CM, magnetic skyrmions and spin helices emerge due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which then penetrate into the adjacent FM. However, because the non-uniform magnetization structures are energetically unfavorable in the FM, the penetrated magnetization structures are deformed, resulting in exotic three-dimensional configurations, such as skyrmion cones, sideways skyrmions, and twisted helices and skyrmions. We discuss the stability of possible magnetization configurations at the …
We propose a theoretical framework of a magnetization switching induced solely by a microwave. The microwave frequency is always close to but slightly different from the oscillation frequency of the magnetization. By efficiently absorbing energy from the microwave, the magnetization climbs up the energy landscape to synchronize the precession with the microwave. We introduced a dimensionless parameter $ε$ determining the difference between the microwave frequency and the instant oscillation frequency of the magnetization. We analytically derived the condition of $ε$ to switch the magnetization…
We report on the nonlinear magnetization dynamics of a HoFeO3 crystal induced by a strong terahertz magnetic field resonantly enhanced with a split ring resonator and measured with magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy. The terahertz magnetic field induces a large change (~40%) in the spontaneous magnetization. The frequency of the antiferromagnetic resonance decreases in proportion to the square of the magnetization change. A modified Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with a phenomenological nonlinear damping term quantitatively reproduced the nonlinear dynamics.
Transport and non-equilibrium magnetization in monolayers of magnetic molecules subject to a bias voltage are considered. We apply a master-equation approach going beyond the sequential-tunneling approximation to study the Coulomb-blockade regime. While the current is very small in this case, the magnetization shows changes of the order of the saturation magnetization for small variations of the bias voltage. Inelastic cotunneling processes manifest themselves as differential-conductance steps, which are accompanied by much larger changes in the magnetization. In addition, the magnetization in…
We use micromagnetic simulation to demonstrate layer-selective detection of magnetization directions from magnetic dots having two recording layers by using a spin-torque oscillator (STO) as a read device. This method is based on ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) excitation of recording-layer magnetizations by the microwave field from the STO. The FMR excitation affects the oscillation of the STO, which is utilized to sense the magnetization states in a recording layer. The recording layers are designed to have different FMR frequencies so that the FMR excitation is selectively induced by tuning t…
We analyze transport of magnetization in insulating systems described by a spin Hamiltonian. The magnetization current through a quasi one-dimensional magnetic wire of finite length suspended between two bulk magnets is determined by the spin conductance which remains finite in the ballistic limit due to contact resistance. For ferromagnetic systems, magnetization transport can be viewed as transmission of magnons and the spin conductance depends on the temperature T. For antiferromagnetic isotropic spin-1/2 chains, the spin conductance is quantized in units of order $(g μ_B)^2/h$ at T=0. Magn…
Micro-Hall magnetometry is employed to study the magnetization dynamics of a single, micron-size CrO$_2$ grain. With this technique we track the motion of a single domain wall, which allows us to probe the distribution of imperfections throughout the material. An external magnetic field along the grain's easy magnetization direction induces magnetization reversal, giving rise to a series of sharp jumps in magnetization. Supported by micromagnetic simulations, we identify the transition to a state with a single cross-tie domain wall, where pinning/depinning of the wall results in stochastic Bar…
