We show that the scattering operator for defocusing energy critical semilinear wave equations \square u+f(u)=0, with f C-infinity and f ~ u^5, in three space dimensions, determines f.
We show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on an arbitrary open portion of the boundary of a domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$, for a class of semilinear elliptic equations, determines the nonlinearity uniquely.
In this paper, we consider an inverse problem to determine a semilinear term of a parabolic equation from a single boundary measurement of Neumann type. For this problem, a reconstruction algorithm is established by the spectral representation for the fundamental solution of heat equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition and the Whitney extension theorem.
An inverse problem to determine a space-dependent factor in a semilinear time-fractional diffusion equation is considered. Additional data are given in the form of an integral with the Borel measure over the time. Uniqueness of the solution of the inverse problem is studied. The method uses a positivity principle of the corresponding differential equation that is also proved in the paper.
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for a semilinear wave equation on a time-dependent Lorentzian manifold with time-like boundary. The time-dependent coefficients of the nonlinear terms can be recovered in the interior from the knowledge of the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map. Either distorted plane waves or Gaussian beams can be used to derive uniqueness.
We establish a logarithmic stability inequality for the inverse problem of determining the non linear term, appearing in a semilinear BVP, from the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann map (abbreviated to DtN map in the rest of this text). Our result can be seen as a stability inequality for an earlier uniqueness result by Isakov and Sylvester [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 47 (1994), 1403-1410].
We study a class of fractional semilinear elliptic equations and formulate the corresponding Calderón problem. We determine the nonlinearity from the exterior partial measurements of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map by using first order linearization and the Runge approximation property.
We show that the linear span of the set of scalar products of gradients of harmonic functions on a bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ which vanish on a closed proper subset of the boundary is dense in $L^1(Ω)$. We apply this density result to solve some partial data inverse boundary problems for a class of semilinear elliptic PDE with quadratic gradient terms.
We study the direct and inverse scattering problem for the semilinear Schrödinger equation $Δu+a(x,u)+k^2u=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We show well-posedness in the direct problem for small solutions based on the Banach fixed point theorem, and the solution has the certain asymptotic behavior at infinity. We also show the inverse problem that the semilinear function $a(x,z)$ is uniquely determined from the scattering data. The idea is certain linearization that by using sources with several parameters we differentiate the nonlinear equation with respect to these parameter in order to get the linear …

We consider the inverse problem of determining a potential in a semilinear elliptic equation from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. For bounded Euclidean domains we prove that the potential is uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map measured at a single boundary point, or integrated against a fixed measure. This result is valid even when the Dirichlet data is only given on a small subset of the boundary. We also give related uniqueness results on Riemannian manifolds.
We consider inverse problems in space-time $(M, g)$, a $4$-dimensional Lorentzian manifold. For semilinear wave equations $\square_g u + H(x, u) = f$, where $\square_g$ denotes the usual Laplace-Beltrami operator, we prove that the source-to-solution map $L: f \rightarrow u|_V$, where $V$ is a neighborhood of a time-like geodesic $μ$, determines the topological, differentiable structure and the conformal class of the metric of the space-time in the maximal set where waves can propagate from $μ$ and return back. Moreover, on a given space-time $(M, g)$, the source-to-solution map determines som…
This paper is concerned with the forward and inverse problems for the fractional semilinear elliptic equation $(-Δ)^s u +a(x,u)=0$ for $0<s<1$. For the forward problem, we proved the problem is well-posed and has a unique solution for small exterior data. The inverse problems we consider here consists of two cases. First we demonstrate that an unknown coefficient $a(x,u)$ can be uniquely determined from the knowledge of exterior measurements, known as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Second, despite the presence of an unknown obstacle in the media, we show that the obstacle and the coefficient ca…
We study the global existence of solutions to semilinear damped wave equations in the scattering case with derivative power-type nonlinearity on (1+3) dimensional nontrapping asymptotically Euclidean manifolds. The main idea is to exploit local energy estimate, together with local existence to convert the parameter $μ$ to small one.
In this paper, we study the semilinear wave equations with the inverse-square potential. By transferring the original equation to a "fractional dimensional" wave equation and analyzing the properties of its fundamental solution, we establish a long-time existence result, for sufficiently small, spherically symmetric initial data. Together with the previously known blow-up result, we determine the critical exponent which divides the global existence and finite time blow-up. Moreover, the sharp lower bounds of the lifespan are obtained, except for certain borderline case. In addition, our techno…

We study inverse source problems associated to semilinear elliptic equations of the form \[ Δu(x)+a(x,u)=F(x), \] on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$. We show that it is possible to use nonlinearity to break the gauge symmetry of the inverse source problem for a class of nonlinearities $a(x,u)$. This is in contrast to inverse source problems for linear equations, which always have a gauge symmetry. The class of nonlinearities include certain polynomials and exponential nonlinearities. For these nonlinearities, we determine both $a(x,u)$ and $F(x)$ uniquely from the associate…
We consider the Cauchy problem for semilinear wave equations with variable coefficients and time-dependent scattering damping in $\mathbf{R}^n$, where $n\geq 2$. It is expected that the critical exponent will be Strauss' number $p_0(n)$, which is also the one for semilinear wave equations without damping terms. Lai and Takamura (2018) have obtained the blow-up part, together with the upper bound of lifespan, in the sub-critical case $p<p_0(n)$. In this paper, we extend their results to the critical case $p=p_0(n)$. The proof is based on Wakasa and Yordanov (2018), which concerns the blow-up an…
We prove small-data global existence to semi-linear wave equations on hyperbolic space of dimension greater than or equal to three, for nonlinearities that have the form of a sufficiently high integer power of the solution. We also prove the existence and asymptotic completeness of wave operators in this setting.
In this paper we consider the blow-up for solutions to a weakly coupled system of semilinear damped wave equations of derivative type in the scattering case. After introducing suitable functionals proposed by Lai-Takamura for the corresponding single semilinear equation, we employ Kato's lemma to derive the blow-up result in the subcritical case. On the other hand, in the critical case an iteration procedure based on the slicing method is employed. Let us point out that we find as critical curve in the p-q plane for the pair of exponents (p, q) in the nonlinear terms the same one as for the we…
We study various partial data inverse boundary value problems for the semilinear elliptic equation $Δu+ a(x,u)=0$ in a domain in $\mathbb R^n$ by using the higher order linearization technique introduced in [LLS 19, FO19]. We show that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of the above equation determines the Taylor series of $a(x,z)$ at $z=0$ under general assumptions on $a(x,z)$. The determination of the Taylor series can be done in parallel with the detection of an unknown cavity inside the domain or an unknown part of the boundary of the domain. The method relies on the solution of the linearized p…
In this paper we study nonexistence of non-negative distributional supersolutions for a class of semilinear elliptic equations involving inverse-square potentials.
In this work we study the blow-up of solutions of a weakly coupled system of damped semilinear wave equations in the scattering case with power nonlinearities. We apply an iteration method to study both the subcritical case and the critical case. In the subcritical case our approach is based on lower bounds for the space averages of the components of local solutions. In the critical case we use the slicing method and a couple of auxiliary functions, recently introduced by Wakasa-Yordanov, to modify the definition of the functionals with the introduction of weight terms. In particular, we find …
We prove global well-posedness and scattering in $H^1$ for the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} &(i\partial_t+Δ_\g)u=u|u|^{2σ}; &u(0)=ϕ, \end{cases} \end{equation*} on the hyperbolic spaces $\H^d$, $d\geq 2$, for exponents $σ\in(0,2/(d-2))$. The main unexpected conclusion is scattering to linear solutions in the case of small exponents $σ$; for comparison, on Euclidean spaces scattering in $H^1$ is not known for any exponent $σ\in(1/d,2/d]$ and is known to fail for $σ\in(0,1/d]$. Our main ingredients are certain noneuclidean global in time Strichartz e…
It is well-known that the critical exponent for semilinear damped wave equations is Fujita exponent when the damping is effective. Lai, Takamura and Wakasa in 2017 have obtained a blow-up result not only for super-Fujita exponent but also for the one closely related to Strauss exponent when the damping is scaling invariant and its constant is relatively small, which has been recently extended by Ikeda and Sobajima. Introducing a multiplier for the time-derivative of the spatial integral of unknown functions, we succeed in employing the technics on the analysis for semilinear wave equations and …
In this paper we study blow-up and lifespan estimate for solutions to the Cauchy problem with small data for semilinear wave equations with scattering damping and negative mass term. We show that the negative mass term will play a dominant role when the decay of its coefficients is not so fast, thus the solutions will blow up in a finite time. What is more, we establish a lifespan estimate from above which is much shorter than the usual one.
We show global existence backwards from scattering data at infinity for semilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition or the weak null condition. Semilinear terms satisfying the weak null condition appear in many equations in physics. The scattering data is given in terms of the radiation field, although in the case of the weak null condition there is an additional logarithmic term in the asymptotic behaviour that has to be taken into account. Our results are sharp in the sense that the solution has the same spatial decay as the radiation field does along null infinity, which is assu…
In this paper we establish blow-up results and lifespan estimates for semilinear wave equations with scattering damping and negative mass term for subcritical power, which is the same as that of the corresponding problem without mass term, and also the same as that of the corresponding problem without both damping and mass term. For this purpose, we have to use the comparison argument twice, due to the damping and mass term, in additional to a key multiplier. Finally, we get the desired results by an iteration argument.
It is believed or conjectured that the semilinear wave equations with scattering space dependent damping admit the Strauss critical exponent, see Ikehata-Todorova-Yordanov \cite{ITY}(the bottom in page 2) and Nishihara-Sobajima-Wakasugi \cite{N2}(conjecture iii in page 4). In this work, we are devoted to showing the conjecture is true at least when the decay rate of the space dependent variable coefficients before the damping is larger than 2. Also, if the nonlinear term depends only on the derivative of the solution, we may prove the upper bound of the lifespan is the same as that of the solu…
In this paper we consider the blow-up of solutions to a weakly coupled system of semilinear damped wave equations in the scattering case with nonlinearities of mixed type, namely, in one equation a power nonlinearity and in the other a semilinear term of derivative type. The proof of the blow-up results is based on an iteration argument. As expected, due to the assumptions on the coefficients of the damping terms, we find as critical curve in the p-q plane for the pair of exponents (p,q) in the nonlinear terms the same one found by Hidano-Yokoyama and, recently, by Ikeda-Sobajima-Wakasa for th…
In this short note, we investigate simultaneous recovery inverse problems for semilinear elliptic equations with partial data. The main technique is based on higher order linearization and monotonicity approaches. With these methods at hand, we can determine the diffusion, cavity and coefficients simultaneously by knowing the corresponding localized Dirichlet-Neumann operators.
We consider the energy-critical semilinear focusing wave equation in dimension $N=3,4,5$. An explicit solution $W$ of this equation is known. By the work of C. Kenig and F. Merle, any solution of initial condition $(u_0,u_1)$ such that $E(u_0,u_1)<E(W,0)$ and $\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^2}<\|\nabla W\|_{L^2}$ is defined globally and has finite $L^{\frac{2(N+1)}{N-2}}_{t,x}$-norm, which implies that it scatters. In this note, we show that the supremum of the $L^{\frac{2(N+1)}{N-2}}_{t,x}$-norm taken on all scattering solutions at a certain level of energy below $E(W,0)$ blows-up logarithmically as this …
This paper is devoted to the study of the existence of positive solutions for a problem related to a higher order fractional differential equation involving a nonlinear term depending on a fractional differential operator, $$(-Δ)^α u=λu+ (-Δ)^β|u|^{p-1}u \quad \mbox{in}\quad Ω;\qquad (-Δ)^{j}u=0\quad \mbox{on}\quad \partialΩ,\quad \mbox{for}\quad j\in\mathbb{Z},\: 0\leq j< [α]$$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, $0<β<1$, $β<α<β+1$ and $λ>0$. In particular, we study the fractional elliptic problem, $$ (-Δ)^{α-β} u= λ(-Δ)^{-β}u+ |u|^{p-1}u \quad\mbox{in} \quad Ω;\qquad u=0 \quad…
We study global uniqueness in an inverse problem for the fractional semilinear Schrödinger equation $(-Δ)^{s}u+q(x,u)=0$ with $s\in (0,1)$. We show that an unknown function $q(x,u)$ can be uniquely determined by the Cauchy data set. In particular, this result holds for any space dimension greater than or equal to $2$. Moreover, we demonstrate the comparison principle and provide a $L^\infty$ estimate for this nonlocal equation under appropriate regularity assumptions.
We investigate the monotonicity method for fractional semilinear elliptic equations with power type nonlinearities. We prove that if-and-only-if monotonicity relations between coefficients and the derivative of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map hold. Based on the strong monotonicity relations, we study a constructive global uniqueness for coefficients and inclusion detection for the fractional Calderón type inverse problem. Meanwhile, we can also derive the Lipschitz stability with finitely many measurements. The results hold for any $n\geq 1$.
We consider the quintic, focusing semilinear wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^{1+3}$, in the radially symmetric setting, and construct infinite time blow-up, relaxation, and intermediate types of solutions. More precisely, we first define an admissible class of time-dependent length scales, which includes a symbol class of functions. Then, we construct solutions which can be decomposed, for all sufficiently large time, into an Aubin-Talentini (soliton) solution, re-scaled by an admissible length scale, plus radiation (which solves the free 3 dimensional wave equation), plus corrections which decay…
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to an elliptic equation near the singularity of an inverse square potential with a coefficient related to the best constant for the Hardy inequality. Due to the presence of a borderline Hardy potential, a proper variational setting has to be introduced in order to provide a weak formulation of the equation. An Almgren-type monotonicity formula is used to determine the exact asymptotic behavior of solutions.
We establish the local wellposedness of different type of solutions the system with different types of initial data. We find there exists a critical exponents line in space dimension 3 and critical exponents point in space dimension 4. We also establish different scattering theories for the global solutions.
We present a general algorithm to show that a scattering operator associated to a semilinear dispersive equation is real analytic, and to compute the coefficients of its Taylor series at any point. We illustrate this method in the case of the Schrodinger equation with power-like nonlinearity or with Hartree type nonlinearity, and in the case of the wave and Klein-Gordon equations with power nonlinearity. Finally, we discuss the link of this approach with inverse scattering, and with complete integrability.
