We propose a novel Conditional Variational Autoencoder (CVAE) model, enhanced with adversarial censoring and active learning, for the generation of 550 nm broad bandwidth (1250 nm to 1800 nm) power splitters with arbitrary splitting ratio. The device footprint is 2.25 x 2.25 μ m2 with a 20 x 20 etched hole combination. It is the first demonstration to apply the CVAE model and the adversarial censoring for the photonics problems. We confirm that the optimized device has an overall performance close to 90% across all bandwidths from 1250 nm to 1800 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the smallest broadband power splitter with arbitrary ratio.
Highly-efficient broadband polarization beam splitters with small footprint and based on silicon photonics technology are of great importance in optical integrated circuits. In this paper, a crucially applicable optical component of a TE/TM polarization beam splitter has been designed and simulated using the inverse design of adjoint method. The mentioned device has ultra-high transmission efficiency (about 96% for TM$_{00}$ and 93% for TE$_{00}$ modes) and high extinction ratio of more than 16 dB over the bandwidth of 200 nm. Small footprint (2.2 $\times$ 2.1 $μ$m$^2$), broad bandwidth (200 n…
We designed Si-based all-dielectric 1 $\times$ 2 TE and TM power splitters with various splitting ratios and simulated them using the inverse design of adjoint and numerical 3D finite-difference time-domain methods. The proposed devices exhibit ultra-high transmission efficiency above 98 and 99\%, and excess losses below 0.1 and 0.035 dB, for TE and TM splitters, respectively. The merits of these devices include a minor footprint of 2.2 $\times$ 2.2 $μ$m $\times$ $μ$m and a broad operating bandwidth of 200 nm with a center wavelength of $λ$ = 1.55 $μ$ m.
Subwavelength planar structured interfaces, also known as metasurfaces, are ultra-thin optical elements modulating the amplitude, phase, and polarization of incident light using nanostructures called meta-atoms. The optical properties of such metasurfaces can be controlled across wavelengths by selecting geometries and materials of the meta-atoms. Given recent technological developments in optical device miniaturization, components for beam splitting and beam combining are sought for use within these devices as two quintessential components of every optical setup. However, realizing such devic…
The intriguing analogy between quantum physics and optics has inspired the design of unconventional integrated photonics devices. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate a broadband integrated polarization beam splitter (PBS) by implementing the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) technique in a three-waveguide plasmonic system. Our proposed PBS exhibits >250 nm TM bandwidth with <-40 dB extinction and >150 nm TE bandwidth with <-20 dB extinction, covering the entire S-, C- and L-band and partly E-band. Moreover, near-lossless light transfer is achieved in our system despite the inco…
Recently, the implementation of plasmonic nanoantennas has opened new possibilities to investigate the nanoscale dynamics of individual biomolecules in living cell. However, studies have yet been restricted to single molecular species as the narrow wavelength resonance of gold-based nanostructures precludes the simultaneous interrogation of different fluorescently labeled molecules. Here we exploited broadband aluminum-based nanoantennas carved at the apex of near-field probes to resolve nanoscale-dynamic molecular interactions on intact living cell membranes. Through multicolor excitation, we…
The need for optically multi-functional micro- and nano-structures is growing in various fields. Designing such structures is impeded by the lack of computationally low-cost algorithms. In this study, we present a hybrid design scheme, which relies on a deep learning model and the local search optimization algorithm, to optimize a diffractive optical element that performs spectral splitting and spatial concentration of broadband light for solar cells. Using generated data set during optimization of a diffractive optical element, which is a one-time effort, we design topography of diffractive o…
Meta-optics based on optically-resonant dielectric nanostructures is a rapidly developing research field with many potential applications. Halide perovskite metasurfaces emerged recently as a novel platform for meta-optics, and they offer unique opportunities for control of light in optoelectronic devices. Here we employ the generalized Kerker conditions to overlap electric and magnetic Mie resonances in each meta-atom of MAPbBr3 perovskite metasurface and demonstrate broadband suppression of reflection down to 4%. We reveal also that metasurface nanostructuring is also beneficial for the enha…
Silicon photonic integrated circuits routinely require 3-dB optical power dividers with minimal losses, small footprints, ultra-wide bandwidths, and relaxed manufacturing tolerances to distribute light across the chip and as a key building block to form more complex devices. Symmetric Y-junctions stand out among other power splitting devices owing to their wavelength-independent response and a straightforward design. Yet, the limited resolution of current fabrication methods results in a minimum feature size (MFS) at the tip between the two Y-junction arms that leads to significant losses for …
To implement quantum light sources based on quantum emitters in applications, it is desirable to improve the extraction efficiency of single photons. In particular controlling the directionality and solid angle of the emission are key parameters, for instance, to couple single photons into optical fibers and send the information encoded in quantum light over long distances, for quantum communication applications. In addition, fundamental studies of the radiative behavior of quantum emitters, including studies of coherence and blinking, benefit from such improved photon collection. Quantum dots…
