Silicon photonic integrated circuits routinely require 3-dB optical power dividers with minimal losses, small footprints, ultra-wide bandwidths, and relaxed manufacturing tolerances to distribute light across the chip and as a key building block to form more complex devices. Symmetric Y-junctions stand out among other power splitting devices owing to their wavelength-independent response and a straightforward design. Yet, the limited resolution of current fabrication methods results in a minimum feature size (MFS) at the tip between the two Y-junction arms that leads to significant losses for the fundamental mode. Here we propose to circumvent this limitation by leveraging subwavelength metamaterials in a new type of ultra-broadband and fabrication-tolerant Y-junction. An exhaustive experimental study over a 260 nm bandwidth (1420-1680 nm) shows excess loss below 0.3 dB for the fundamental transverse-electric mode (TE0) for a high-resolution lithographic process (MFS about 50 nm) and less than 0.5 dB for a fabrication resolution of 100 nm. Subwavelength Y-junctions with deterministically induced errors of plus-minus 10 nm further demonstrated robust fabrication tolerances. Moreover, the splitter exhibits excess loss lower than 1 dB for the first-order transverse-electric mode (TE1) within a 100 nm bandwidth (1475-1575 nm), using high-resolution lithography.
Increasing attention on microwave ultra-broadband metamaterial absorbers has been paid due to their promising applications. While most microwave ultra-broadband metamaterial absorbers developed so far are based on metallic resonant structures, dispersive dielectric water-based metamaterial opens a simpler and more versatile route for the construction of polarization- and angle- insensitive ultra-broadband absorption. Here, we review the recent progresses of water-based metamaterial absorber by providing an illustration of the mechanisms to realize ultra-broadband, tunable and multi-functional …
We propose herein a method of material-structure integrated design for broadband absorption of dielectric metamaterial, which is achieved by combination of genetic algorithm and simulation platform. A multi-layered metamaterial absorber with an ultra-broadband absorption from 5.3 to 18 GHz (a relative bandwidth of as high as 109%) is realized numerically and experimentally. In addition, simulated results demonstrate the proposed metamaterial exhibits good incident angle and polarization tolerance, which also are significant criteria for practical applications. By investigating the working prin…
Aligned, densely-packed carbon nanotube metamaterials prepared using vacuum filtration are an emerging infrared nanophotonic material. We report multiple hyperbolic plasmon resonances, together spanning the mid-infrared, in individual resonators made from aligned and densely-packed carbon nanotubes. In the first near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) imaging study of nanotube metamaterial resonators, we observe distinct deeply-subwavelength field profiles at the fundamental and higher-order resonant frequencies. The wafer-scale area of the nanotube metamaterials allows us to combine thi…
In this paper, we employ the novel design of the metamaterial half-wave plate by using the multiple layers of the metamaterials with some specific rotation angles. The rotation angles are given by composite pulse control which is the well-known quantum control technique. A big advantage of this method can analytically calculate the rotation angles and can be easily extended to the multiple layers. The more layers of the metamaterials can present more bandwidth of half-wave plate. In this paper, we present 1, 3, 5, 7 configurations of layers of a metamaterial half-wave plate and we demonstrate …
We propose a thin, compact, broadband, polarization and angle insensitive metamaterial absorber based on a tungsten reflector, silicon spacer and a top pattern composed of a double square-like ring resonator utilizing nickel(Ni). In such a structure, a high absorption (above 80 %) bandwidth ~ 4.8 μm from 3.52 up to 8.32 μm corresponding to the relative bandwidth ~81% can be achieved with deeply subwavelength unit cell dimensions. Here the physical origin of the broadband absorption is associated with low Q-factor dipole modes of the top pattern inner and outer sides functioning as rectangular …
In this paper, we employ the properties of metamaterials to tailor the modes of metamaterial-dielectric waveguides operating at optical frequencies. We survey the effect of fishnet metamaterial structural parameters such as the magnetic oscillation strength, magnetic resonance frequency and magnetic damping on the double-negative refractive index frequency region in metamaterials and on the hybrid-modes in slab metamaterial-dielectric waveguides. To identify the robustness of the metamaterials to fluctuations in the metamaterial structural parameters, we investigate the behavior of metamateria…
Nanoscale slot waveguides of hyperbolic metamaterials are proposed and demonstrated for achieving large optical field enhancement. The dependence of the enhanced electric field within the air slot on waveguide mode coupling and permittivity tensors of hyperbolic metamaterials is analyzed both numerically and analytically. Optical intensity in the metamaterial slot waveguide can be more than 25 times stronger than that in a conventional silicon slot waveguide, due to tight optical mode confinement enabled by the ultrahigh refractive indices supported in hyperbolic metamaterials. The electric fi…
Strongly anisotropic media with hyperbolic dispersion can be used for claddings of plasmonic waveguides. In order to analyze the fundamental properties of such waveguides, we analytically study 1D waveguides arranged of a hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) in a HMM-Insulator-HMM (HIH) structure. We show that hyperbolic metamaterial claddings give flexibility in designing the properties of HIH waveguides. Our comparative study on 1D plasmonic waveguides reveals that HIH-type waveguides can have a higher performance than MIM or IMI waveguides.
We report the broadband (~ 25 nm) enhancement of radiative decay rate of colloidal quantum dots by exploiting the hyperbolic dispersion of a one-dimensional nonmagnetic metamaterial structure.
We propose a leaky optical waveguide achieved with a uniaxially anisotropic metamaterial that supports both forward and backward leaky waves. The backward leaky nature is exploited in a sub-diffraction imaging system.
The rapidly growing global data usage has demanded more efficient ways to utilize the scarce electromagnetic spectrum resource. Recent research has focused on the development of efficient multiplexing techniques in the millimeter-wave band (1-10 mm, or 30-300 GHz) due to the promise of large available bandwidth for future wireless networks. Frequency-division multiplexing is still one of the most commonly-used techniques to maximize the transmission capacity of a wireless network. Based on the frequency-selective tunnelling effect of the low-loss epsilon-near-zero metamaterial waveguide, we nu…
Metamaterial is promising for enhancing the capability of plasmonic devices. We consider a cylindrical waveguide with three-level Λ atoms embedded in the dielectric core. By comparing metal cladding vs metamaterial cladding of a waveguide with Λ atoms in the core, we show that, for a fixed amount of slowing of light due to electromagnetically induced transparency, the metamaterial cladding outperforms in terms of the inherent loss.
We present a detailed study of oscillating modes in a slab waveguide with air core and anisotropic metamaterial cladding. It is shown that, under specific dielectric configurations, slow and even stopped electromagnetic wave can be supported by such an air waveguide. We propose a linearly tapped waveguide structure that could lead the propagating light to a complete standstill. Both the theoretical analysis and the proposed waveguide have been validated by full-wave simulation based on finite-difference time-domain method.
As an analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) has been realized both in plasmonic metamaterial and waveguide structures. Via near-field coupling within unit cells, PIT with broadband could be produced by plasmonic metamaterials, which, however, has not been realized in on-chip plasmonic waveguide structures. Here, we introduce broadband PIT based on a plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide system. Utilizing the direct coupling structure, PIT emerges based on an easy-fabricated structure without gap. By tuning coupling distance, th…
We propose a design for broadband waveguide mode conversion based on gradient index metamaterials (GIMs). Numerical simulations demonstrate that the zeroth order of transverse magnetic mode or the first order of transverse electric mode (TM0/TE1) can be converted into the first order of transverse magnetic mode or the second order of transverse electric mode (TM1/TE2) for a broadband of frequencies. As an application, an asymmetric propagation is achieved by integrating zero index metamaterials inside the GIM waveguide.
We study the eigenmodes of a slab of a wire metamaterial and demonstrate that such a waveguiding structure supports deep-subwavelength propagating modes exhibiting properties of a single-mode waveguide at any fixed frequency below the plasma frequency of metal wires. We compare our analytical results with the dispersion relations extracted from the experimental measurements.
We demonstrated a 2D helical chiral metamaterial that exhibits broadband strong optical activity resulting nonresonant Drude-like response. The strong chirality leads to broadband negative refractive index with high figure of merit (>90) and extremely low loss (<2% per layer). The optical activity are insensitive to the angles of incident electromagnetic waves, thereby enabling more flexibility in polarization manipulation applicaitons.
We experimentally demonstrate a broadband enhancement of emission from nitrogen vacancy centers in nanodiamonds. The enhancement is achieved by using a multilayer metamaterial with hyperbolic dispersion. The metamaterial is fabricated as a stack of alternating gold and alumina layers. Our approach paves the way towards the construction of efficient single-photon sources as planar on-chip devices.
Light absorption plays an important role in many research areas. Here, we propose and demonstrate a thin ultra-broadband strong light absorber consisting of periodic taper arrays on a gold substrate.
This paper investigates the propagation characteristics of circular waveguides whose interior surface is coated with a thin metamaterial liner possessing dispersive, negative, and near-zero permittivity. A field analysis of this system produces the dispersion of complex modes, and reveals in detail intriguing phenomena such as backward-wave propagation below the unlined waveguide's fundamental-mode cutoff, resonant tunneling of power, field collimation, and miniaturization. It is shown how the waveguide geometry and metamaterial parameters may be selected to engineer the lined waveguide's spec…
We study metamaterials with an anisotropic effective permittivity tensor in which one component is near zero. We find that such an anisotropic metamaterial can be used to control wave propagation and construct almost perfect bending waveguides with a high transmission rate (>95%). This interesting effect originates in the power flow redistribution by the surface waves on the input and output interfaces, which smoothly matches with the propagating modes inside the metamaterial waveguide. We also find that waves in such anisotropic epsilon-near-zero materials can be reflected by small-sized perf…
Integrated mid-infrared micro-spectrometers have a great potential for applications in environmental monitoring and space exploration. Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) is a promising platform to tackle this integration challenge, due to its unique capability for large volume and low-cost production of ultra-compact photonic circuits. However, the use of SOI in the mid-infrared is restricted by the strong absorption of the buried oxide layer for wavelengths beyond 4 μm. Here, we overcome this limitation by utilizing metamaterial-cladded suspended silicon waveguides to implement a spatial heterodyne F…
Metamaterials, which are materials engineered to possess novel optical properties, have been increasingly studied. The ability to fabricate metamaterials has sparked an interest in determining possible applications. We investigate using a metamaterial for boundary engineering in waveguides. A metamaterial-clad cylindrical waveguide is used to provide confinement for an optical signal, thereby increasing the local electromagnetic energy density. We show that metamaterial-clad waveguides have unique optical properties, including new modes, which we call hybrid modes. These modes have properties …
Because of the strong inherent resonances, the giant optical activity obtained via chiral metamaterials generally suffers from high dispersion, which has been a big stumbling block to broadband applications. In this paper, we propose a type of chiral metamaterial consisting of interconnected metal helix structures with four-fold symmetry, which exhibits nonresonant Drude-like response and can therefore avoid the highly dispersive optical activity resulting from resonances. It shows that the well-designed chiral metamaterial can achieve nondispersive and pure optical activity with high transmit…
We demonstrate that metamaterial devices requiring anisotropic dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability may be emulated by specially designed tapered waveguides. This approach leads to low-loss, broadband performance. Based on this technique, we demonstrate broadband electromagnetic cloaking in the visible frequency range on a scale ~100 times larger than the wavelength.
We propose deep-subwavelength optical waveguides based on metal-dielectric multilayer indefinite metamaterials with ultrahigh effective refractive indices. Waveguide modes with different mode orders are systematically analyzed with numerical simulations based on both metal-dielectric multilayer structures and the effective medium approach. The dependences of waveguide mode indices, propagation lengths and mode areas on different mode orders, free space wavelengths and sizes of waveguide cross sections are studied. Furthermore, waveguide modes are also illustrated with iso-frequency contours in…
Flexible control of the modal confinement in silicon photonic waveguides is an appealing feature for many applications, including sensing and hybrid integration of active materials. In most cases, strip waveguides are the preferred solution to maximize the light interaction with the waveguide surroundings. However, the only two degrees of freedom in Si strip waveguides are the width and thickness, resulting in limited flexibility in evanescent field control. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new strategy that exploits metamaterial engineering of the waveguide core and cladding to control the …
Optical phase shifters are extensively used in integrated optics not only for telecom and datacom applications, but also for sensors and quantum computing. While various active solutions have been demonstrated, progress in passive phase shifters is still lacking. Here, we present a new type of ultra-broadband 90° phase shifter, which exploits the anisotropy and dispersion engineering in subwavelength metamaterial waveguides. Our Floquet-Bloch calculations predict a phase shift error below $\pm$1.7° over an unprecedented operation range from 1.35 $μ$m to 1.75 $μ$m, i.e. 400 nm bandwidth coverin…
We show that waveguides with a dielectric core and a lossy metamaterial cladding (metamaterial-dielectric guides) can support hybrid ordinary-surface modes previously only known for metal-dielectric waveguides. These hybrid modes are potentially useful for frequency filtering applications as sharp changes in field attenuation occur at tailorable frequencies. Our results also show that the surface modes of a metamaterial-dielectric waveguide with comparable electric and magnetic losses can be less lossy than the surface modes of an analogous metal-dielectric waveguide with electric losses alone…
We theoretically demonstrate a non-hermitian metamaterial exhibiting broadband and wide-angle nonreciprocity. The metamaterial consists of planar metal-dielectric layers with a Parity-Time (PT) symmetric distrubtion of loss and gain. With increasing loss and gain, the bandstructure and bandgap are strongly modified; further, the PT potential leads to distinct internal field distributions when illuminated from different sides. Including nonlinearities arising from natural loss and gain saturation leads to nonreciprocal transmission in the visible over a 50 nm wavelength and 60$^{\circ}$ degree …
This paper shows that customised broadband absorption of electromagnetic waves having arbitrary polarisation is possible by use of lossy cut-wire (CW) metamaterials. These useful features are confirmed by numerical simulations in which different lengths of CW pairs are combined as one periodic metamaterial unit and placed near to a perfect electric conductor (PEC). So far metamaterial absorbers have exhibited some interesting features, which are not available from conventional absorbers, e.g. straightforward adjustment of electromagnetic properties and size reduction. The paper shows how with …
The fundamental guided electromagnetic dispersion characteristics in lossless dispersive metamaterial clad circular air hole waveguides are investigated. Two operating guided modes are found to exist: circular waveguide and surface plasmon polariton modes that support fast and slow waves, respectively. Hybrid mode classifications are also made in an empirical manner so that the guided modes can be sorted into either TM-like or TE-like modes in terms of their unique dispersion characteristics. Unusual dispersion characteristics, including multi-valued propagation constants at a single frequency…
We derive general coupled-mode equations describing the nonlinear interaction of electromagnetic modes in media with loss and gain. Our approach is rigorously based on the Lorentz reciprocity theorem, and it can be applied to a broad range of metal-dielectric photonic structures, including plasmonic waveguides and metamaterials. We verify that our general results agree with the previous analysis of particular cases, and predict novel effects on self- and cross-phase modulation in multi-layer nonlinear fishnet metamaterials.
We report the experimental demonstration of broadband negative refractive index obtained in a labyrinthine acoustic metamaterial structure. Two different approaches were employed to prove the metamaterial negative index nature: one-dimensional extractions of effective parameters from reflection and transmission measurements, and two-dimensional prism-based measurements that convincingly show the transmission angle corresponding to negative refraction. The transmission angles observed in the latter case also agree very well with the refractive index obtained in the one-dimensional measurements …
Metamaterials are being used to model various exotic "optical spaces" for such applications as novel lenses and cloaking. While most effort is directed towards engineering of continuously changing dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability tensors, an alternative approach may be based on lattices of metamaterial waveguides. Here we demonstrate the power of the latter technique by presenting metamaterial lattice models of various 4D spaces.
We demonstrate a scheme to utilize the stacked fishnet metamaterial for all-angle negative refraction and subwavelength imaging within a wide frequency range starting from zero frequency. The theoretical predictions are verified by the finite-difference-in-time-domain (FDTD) numerical simulations. The phenomena come from the negative evanescent coupling between the adjacent slab waveguides through the breathing air holes perforated on metal layers.
Metamaterials, artificially engineered materials consisting of subwavelength unit cell, have shown potentials in light manipulation with their extraordinary optical properties. Especially, topological metamaterials possessing topologically protected surface states enable extremely robust control of light. Here, we demonstrate extremely broadband topological phase in a photonic topological metamaterials with double helix structure. In particular topological surface states are observed for all the frequencies below a certain cut-off, originating from a double Weyl point at zero frequency. The ex…
We report on design and fabrication of nano-composite metal-dielectric thin film coatings with high reflectance asymmetries. Applying basic dispersion engineering principles to model a broadband and large reflectance asymmetry, we obtain a model dielectric function for the metamaterial film, closely resembling the effective permittivity of disordered metal-dielectric nano-composites. Coatings realized using disordered nanocrystalline silver films deposited on glass substrates confirm the theoretical predictions, exhibiting symmetric transmittance, large reflectance asymmetries and a unique fla…
The concept of the broadband epsilon-near-zero meta-atom consisting of layered stacks with specified metallic filling ratio and thickness is proposed based on the Bergman spectral representation of the effective permittivity. The step-like metal-dielectric multilayer structures are designed to achieve realistic broadband epsilon-near-zero meta-atoms in optical frequency range. These meta-atoms can be integrated as building blocks for unconventional optical components with exotic electromagnetic properties over a wide frequency range, such as the demonstrated broadband directional emission and …
We experimentally demonstrate a broadband, fabrication tolerant, CMOS compatible compact silicon waveguide taper (34.2 um) in silicon-on-insulator wire waveguides. The taper works on multi-mode interference along the length of the taper. A single taper design has a broadband operation with coupling efficiency >70% over 700 nm that can be used in O, C and L-band. The compact taper is highly tolerant to fabrication variations; >100 nm change in the taper and end waveguide width varies the taper transmission by <5%. The footprint of the device i.e. taper along with the linear gratings is ~ 442 m2…
A strategy is proposed to design the broadband gain-doped epsilon-near-zero (GENZ) metamaterial. Based on the Milton representation of effective permittivity, the strategy starts in a dimensionless spectral space, where the effective permittivity of GENZ metamaterial is simply determined by a pole-zero structure corresponding to the operating frequency range. The physical structure of GENZ metamaterial is retrieved from the pole-zero structure via a tractable inverse problem. The strategy is of great advantage in practical applications and also theoretically reveals the cancellation mechanism …
Here we demonstrate that giant transverse optical forces can be generated in nanoscale slot waveguides of hyperbolic metamaterials, with more than two orders of magnitude stronger compared to the force created in conventional silicon slot waveguides, due to the nanoscale optical field enhancement and the extreme optical energy compression within the air slot region. Both numerical simulation and analytical treatment are carried out to study the dependence of the optical forces on the waveguide geometries and the metamaterial permittivity tensors, including the attractive optical forces for the…
Designing broadband enhanced chirality is of strong interest to the emerging fields of chiral chemistry and sensing, or to control the spin orbital momentum of photons in recently introduced nanophotonic chiral quantum and classical optical applications. However, chiral light-matter interactions have an extremely weak nature, are difficult to be controlled and enhanced, and cannot be made tunable or broadband. In addition, planar ultrathin nanophotonic structures to achieve strong, broadband, and tunable chirality at the technologically important visible to ultraviolet spectrum still remain el…
This work presents the radiation performance of open-ended circular-waveguide probe antennas that have been miniaturized by the introduction of thin metamaterial liners. The liners introduce an HE$_{11}$ mode well below the natural cutoff frequency, which provides substantial gain improvements over a similarly sized waveguide probe. A new feeding arrangement employing a shielded-loop source embedded inside the miniaturized waveguide is developed to efficiently excite the HE$_{11}$ mode and avoid the excitation of other modes across the frequency reduced band while maintaining the antenna's com…
We develop the fluctuational electrodynamics of metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion and show the existence of broadband thermal emission beyond the black body limit in the near field. This arises due to the thermal excitation of unique bulk metamaterial modes, which do not occur in conventional media. We consider a practical realization of the hyperbolic metamaterial and estimate that the effect will be observable using the characteristic dispersion (topological transitions) of the metamaterial states. Our work paves the way for engineering the near-field thermal emission using metamateri…
We show that a rectangular metallic waveguide loaded with metamaterial elements consisting of electric-field coupled (ELC) resonators placed at the side walls can operate well below the cutoff frequency of the respective unloaded waveguide. The dispersion diagrams indicate that propagating modes in ELC-loaded waveguides are of forward-type for both TE and TM modes. We also study the dispersion diagram and transmission characteristics of rectangular metallic waveguides simultaneously loaded with ELCs and split ring resonators (SRRs). Such doubly-loaded waveguides can support both forward wave a…
We demonstrate a THz metamaterial with broadband dipole resonance originating due to the hybridization of LC resonances. The structure optimized by finite element method simulations is fabricated by electron beam lithography and characterized by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Numerically, we found that when two LC metamaterial resonators are brought together, an electric dipole resonance arises in addition to the LC resonances. We observed a strong dependence of the width of these resonances on the separation between the resonators. This dependence can be explained based on series and par…
Shortcut to adiabatic passage (STAP), initially proposed to accelerate adiabatic quantum state transfer, has been widely explored and applied in quantum optics and integrated optics. Here we bring STAP into the field of acoustics to design compact couplers and functional metamaterial. The space-varying coupling strengths of acoustic waveguides (WGs) are tailored by means of dressed states in a three-level system, accounting for the desirable acoustic energy transfer among three WGs with short length. We show that the acoustic coupler has one-way feature when loss is introduced into the interme…
Anomalous optical coupling properties between two silicon wires in a silicon slot waveguide embedded in epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials are proposed and demonstrated. The dependences of optical field enhancement in the slot region and transverse optical force on the slot size and the permittivity of surrounding material are studied in details. It is demonstrated that the optical field in the slot region is significantly enhanced due to the giant index contrast at the slot interface between silicon wires and ENZ metamaterials, but the optical mode coupling between silicon wires is greatly…
In this paper, a kind of helix-like chiral metamaterial, which can be realized with multiple conventional lithography or electron beam lithographic techniques, is proposed to achieve broadband bianisotropic optical response analogous to helical metamaterial. On the basis of twisted metamaterial, via tailoring the relative orientation within the lattice, the anisotropy of arc is converted into magneto-electric coupling of closely spaced arc pairs, which leads to a broad bianisotropic optical response. By connecting the adjacent upper and lower arcs, the coupling of metasurface pairs is transfor…
We propose a concept of a low-symmetry three-dimensional metamaterial exhibiting a Double- Continuum Fano (DCF) optical resonance. Such metamaterial is described as a birefringent medium supporting a discrete "dark" electromagnetic state weakly coupled to the continua of two nondegen- erate "bright" bands of orthogonal polarizations. It is demonstrated that light propagation through such DCF metamaterial can be slowed down over a broad frequency range when the medium param- eters (e.g. frequency of the "dark" mode) are adiabatically changed along the optical path. Using a specific metamaterial…
We present an ultra broadband thin-film infrared absorber made of saw-toothed anisotropic metamaterial. Absorbtivity of higher than 95% at normal incidence is supported in a wide range of frequencies, where the full absorption width at half maximum is about 86%. Such property is retained well at a very wide range of incident angles too. Light of shorter wavelengths are harvested at upper parts of the sawteeth of smaller widths, while light of longer wavelengths are trapped at lower parts of larger tooth widths. This phenomenon is explained by the slowlight modes in anisotropic metamaterial wav…
In this article, a 2D plasmonic waveguide loaded with all dielectric anisotropic metamaterial, consisting of alternative layers of Si-SiO2, has been theoretically proposed and numerically analyzed. Main characteristics of waveguide i.e. propagation constant, propagation length and normalized mode area have been calculated for different values of ridge width and height at telecommunication wavelength. The respective 1D structure of the waveguide has been analytically solved for the anisotropic ridge as a single uniaxial medium with dielectric tensor defined by Effective Medium Theory (EMT). The…
We demonstrate a metamaterial that cannot be described by a single set of refractive-index and impedance values, even for fixed frequency and polarization. The metamaterial structure is a stack of dissimilar waveguides with subwavelength width and spacing, which guide light at different phase velocities. This multi-refractive-index metamaterial (MRIM) can be viewed as a spatial superposition of multiple homogeneous materials. Using full-wave simulations, we demonstrate several optical components based on MRIMs, including prisms that deflect light to multiple angles, lenses with multiple focal …
A hybrid metal-graphene metamaterial (MM) is reported to achieve the active control of the broadband plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) in THz region. The unit cell consists of one cut wire (CW), four U-shape resonators (USRs) and monolayer graphene sheets under the USRs. Via near-field coupling, broadband PIT can be produced through the interference between different modes. Based on different arrangements of graphene positions, not only can we achieve electrically switching the amplitude of broadband PIT, but also can realize modulating the bandwidth of the transparent window. Simultaneously,…
We demonstrate how broadband angular selectivity can be achieved with stacks of one-dimensionally periodic photonic crystals, each consisting of alternating isotropic layers and effective anisotropic layers, where each effective anisotropic layer is constructed from a multilayered metamaterial. We show that by simply changing the structure of the metamaterials, the selective angle can be tuned to a broad range of angles; and, by increasing the number of stacks, the angular transmission window can be made as narrow as desired. As a proof of principle, we realize the idea experimentally in the m…
