Topological metals (TMs) are a kind of special metallic materials, which feature nontrivial band crossings near the Fermi energy, giving rise to peculiar quasiparticle excitations. TMs can be classified based on the characteristics of these band crossings. For example, according to the dimensionality of the crossing, TMs can be classified into nodal-point, nodal-line, and nodal-surface metals. Another important property is the type of dispersion. According to degree of the tilt of the local dispersion around the crossing, we have type-I and type-II dispersions. This leads to significant distinctions in the physical properties of the materials, owing to their contrasting Fermi surface topologies. In this article, we briefly review the recent advances in this research direction, focusing on the concepts, the physical properties, and the material realizations of the type-II nodal-point and nodal-line TMs.
We discuss and illustrate the appearance of topological fermions and bosons in triple-point metals, where a band crossing of three electronic bands occurs close to the Fermi level. Topological bosons appear in the phonon spectrum of certain triple-point metals, depending on the mass of atoms that form the binary triple-point metal. We first provide a classification of possible triple-point electronic topological phases possible in crystalline compounds and discuss the consequences of these topological phases, seen in Fermi arcs, topological Lifshitz transitions and transport anomalies. Then we…
Topological metals possess gapless band structures accompanied with nontrivial edge states. Topological metals are created from the topological insulators by adjusting the magnetic flux. Here we propose the time-reversal symmetry protected topological metal without employing the magnetic flux. Topological metallic phase presents although the Chern number vanishes. In the topologically nontrivial phase, three different cases in the metallic phase are distinguished from the band-touching and in-gap features of the topological edge states. These findings shed light on the time-reversal symmetric …
We study topological surface-plasmon-polaritons at optical frequencies in diffraction gratings formed by bipartite corrugated metal-dielectric gratings. To do so we implement the theory as developed in Della Valle and Longhi to describe the amplitude of the field by an emergent Schrödinger-like equation. The tri-harmonic grating generates a bipartite Kronig-Penney model. Topologically protected localised modes are then predicted to occur at the edges of the grating and at defects formed by the combination of two mirror antisymmetric corrugations, whose bulk invariant is a step-wise varying Zak…
Transition metal dichalcogenides XTe$_{2}$ (X=Mo,W) have been shown to be second-order topological insulators based on first-principles calculations, while topological hinge states have been shown to emerge based on the associated tight-binding model. The model is equivalent to the one constructed from a loop-nodal semimetal by adding mass terms and spin-orbit interactions. We propose to study a chiral-symmetric model obtained from the original Hamiltonian by simplifying it but keeping almost identical band structures and topological hinge states. A merit is that we are able to derive various …
2D materials with nontrivial energy bands are highly desirable for exploring various topological phases of matter, as low dimensionality opens unprecedented opportunities for manipulating the quantum states. Here, it is reported that monolayer (ML) dialkali-metal monoxides, in the well-known 2H-MoS$_2$ type lattice, host multiple symmetry-protected topological phases with emergent fermions, which can be effectively tuned by strain engineering. Based on first-principles calculations, it is found that in the equilibrium state, ML Na$_2$O is a 2D double Weyl semimetal, while ML K$_2$O is a 2D pse…
Mott scattering at the interface between a metal and a topological insulator
Topological semimetals, extending the topological classification from insulators to metals, have greatly enriched our understanding of topological states in condensed matter. This is particularly true for topological nodal-line semimetals (TNLSs). In the present paper, we identify layered materials as promising candidates for hosting TNLSs. Based on first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we propose that layered ferromagnetic rare-earth-metal monohalides LnX (Ln=La, Gd; X=Cl, Br) exhibit long pursued topological phases. Specifically, single-layer LaX and single-layer GdX ar…
For three-dimensional metals, Landau levels disperse as a function of the magnetic field and the momentum wavenumber parallel to the field. In this two-dimensional parameter space, it is shown that two conically-dispersing Landau levels can touch at a diabolical point -- a Landau-Dirac point. The conditions giving rise to Landau-Dirac points are shown to be magnetic breakdown (field-induced quantum tunneling) and certain crystallographic spacetime symmetry. Both conditions are realizable in topological nodal-line metals, as we exemplify with CaP$_3$. A Landau-Dirac point reveals itself in anom…
Recently, a new class of second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) characterized by an electronic dipole has been theoretically introduced and proposed to host topological corner states. As a novel topological state, it has been attracting great interest and experimentally realized in artificial systems of various fields of physics based on multi-sublattice models, e.g., breathing kagome lattice. In order to realize such kind of SOTI in natural materials, we proposed a symmetry-faithful multi-orbital model. Then, we reveal several familiar transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers as …
Topological antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics is an emerging field of research, which exploits the Néel vector to control the topological electronic states and the associated spin-dependent transport properties. A recently discovered Néel spin-orbit torque has been proposed to electrically manipulate Dirac band crossings in antiferromagnets; however, a reliable AFM material to realize these properties in practice is missing. Here, we predict that room temperature AFM metal MnPd$_{2}$ allows the electrical control of the Dirac nodal line by the Néel spin-orbit torque. Based on first-principle…
We study amorphous systems with completely random sites and find that, through constructing and exploring a concrete model Hamiltonian, such a system can host an exotic phase of topological amorphous metal in three dimensions. In contrast to the traditional Weyl semimetals, topological amorphous metals break translational symmetry, and thus cannot be characterized by the first Chern number defined based on the momentum space band structures. Instead, their topological properties will manifest in the Bott index and the Hall conductivity as well as the surface states. By studying the energy band…
In this work, we study the disorder effect on topological metals that support a pair of helical edge modes deeply embedded inside the gapless bulk states. Strikingly, we predict that a quantum spin Hall (QSH) phase can be obtained from such topological metals without opening a global band gap. To be specific, disorder can lead to a pair of robust helical edge states which is protected by an emergent $Z_2$ topological invariant, giving rise to a quantized conductance plateau in transport measurements. These results are instructive for solving puzzles in {various transport experiments on QSH mat…
We investigate if a sharp topological transition in a metal with a large Fermi surface may be detected in transport measurements. In particular, we address if a skew scattering and a side jump on elastic disorder in the bulk of such a metal masks signatures of the topological transition. We conclude that certain transport coefficients exhibit discontinuous changes across the transition. These discontinuities are not smeared or dwarfed by the bulk metallic transport in a broad range of parameters.
Topological metals continue to attract attention as novel gapless states of matter. While there by now exists an exhaustive classification of possible topologically nontrivial metallic states, their observable properties, that follow from the electronic structure topology, are less well understood. Here we present a study of the electromagnetic response of three-dimensional topological metals with Weyl or Dirac nodes in the spectrum, which systematizes and extends earlier pioneering studies. In particular, we argue that a smoking-gun feature of the chiral anomaly in topological metals is the e…
The discovery of monolayer graphene has initiated two fertile fields in modern condensed matter physics, Dirac semimetals and atomically-thin layered materials. When these trends meet again in transition metal compounds, which possess spin and orbital degrees of freedom and strong electron correlations, more exotic phenomena are expected to emerge in the cross section of topological states of matter and Mott physics. Here, we show by using ab initio calculations that a monolayer form of transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTs), which has a honeycomb network of transition metal cations, may exh…
Charge order in kagome metals is of extensive current interest. Recently, a charge density wave was discovered in the magnetic binary kagome metal FeGe. In analogy to its predecessor, the non-magnetic $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$=K, Cs, Rb), the in-plane ordering occurs at the $M$ point. In contrast, however, the system manifestly shows effects of substantial correlations. Here we identify the topological bands crossing the Fermi energy (E$_F$) in FeGe and characterize the correlation-induced renormalization of these bands. We then derive a charge order from an effective model comprising topological ka…
Topological edge states are the core of topological photonics. Here we introduce the antihelical edge states of time-reversal symmetric topological metals and propose a photonic realization in an anisotropic square lattice of coupled ring resonators, where the clockwise and counterclockwise modes play the role of pseudospins. The antihelical edge states robustly propagate across the corners toward the diagonal of the square lattice: The same (opposite) pseudospins copropagate in the same (opposite) direction on the parallel lattice boundaries; the different pseudospins separate and converge at…
We have investigated the topological Hall effect (THE) in MnGa/Pt and MnGa/Ta bilayers induced by interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The most evident THE signals have been found based on the MnGa films with small critical DMI energy constant Dc. The large topological portion of the Hall signal from the total Hall signal has been extracted in the whole temperature range from 5 to 300 K. These results open up the exploration of the DMI induced magnetic behavior based on the bulk perpendicular magnetic anisotropy materials for fundamental physics and magnetic storage technologie…
Although topological band theory has been used to discover and classify a wide array of novel topological phases in insulating and semi-metal systems, it is not well-suited to identifying topological phenomena in metallic or gapless systems. Here, we develop a theory of topological metals based on the system's spectral localizer and associated Clifford pseudospectrum, which can both determine whether a system exhibits boundary-localized states despite the presence of degenerate bulk bands and provide a measure of these states' topological protection even in the absence of a bulk band gap. We d…
We theoretically show that the three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI)/thin-film ferromagnetic metal (FMM) bilayer structure is possible to be a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator with a wide global band gap. Studying the band structure and the weight distributions of eigenstates, we demonstrate that the attachment of a metallic thin-film on the 3DTI can shift the topologically non-trivial state into the metal layers due to the hybridization of bands around the original Dirac point. By introducing the magnetic exchange interaction in the thin-film layers, we compute the anomalous…
We consider asymmetric and symmetric dimerized two-leg ladders, comprising of four different lattice points per unit cell, illuminated by circularly polarized light. In the asymmetric dimerized ladder case, rungs are not perpendicular to the ladder's legs whereas the rungs are perpendicular to the legs for the symmetric one. Using the Floquet theory, we obtain an effective Hamiltonian to study topological properties of the systems. Depending on the dimerization strength and driving amplitude, it is shown that topologically protected edge states manifest themselves not only as a zero-energy ban…
Random flux is commonly believed to be incapable of driving full metal-insulator transitions in non-interacting systems. Here we show that random flux can after all induce a full metal-band insulator transition in the two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Remarkably, we find that the resulting insulator can be an extrinsic higher-order topological insulator with zero-energy corner modes in proper regimes, rather than a conventional Anderson insulator. Employing both level statistics and finite-size scaling analysis, we characterize the metal-band insulator transition and numerically extr…
We experimentally explore the topological Maxwell metal bands by mapping the momentum space of condensed-matter models to the tunable parameter space of superconducting quantum circuits. An exotic band structure that is effectively described by the spin-1 Maxwell equations is imaged. Three-fold degenerate points dubbed Maxwell points are observed in the Maxwell metal bands. Moreover, we engineer and observe the topological phase transition from the topological Maxwell metal to a trivial insulator, and report the first experiment to measure the Chern numbers that are higher than one.
Non-Hermitian skin-edge states emerge only at one edge in one-dimensional nonreciprocal chains, where all states are localized at the edge irrespective of eigenvalues. The bulk topological number is the winding number associated with the complex energy spectrum, which is well defined for metals. We study non-Hermitian nonreciprocal systems in higher dimensions, and propose to realize them with the use of electric diode circuits. We first investigate one-dimensional interface states between two domains carrying different topological numbers, where all states are localized at the interface. They…
