For a model atom with the $p^3$ valence shell we construct consistent three- and two-active electrons models enabling their direct comparison. Within these models, we study the influence of the third active electron on the double ionization yield in strong femtosecond laser fields. We reveal proportionality between double ionization signals obtained with both models in the field intensity region where non-sequential ionization dominates. We derive analytically a correspondence rule connecting the double ionization yields obtained within the three- and two-active electrons models.
We report full-dimensionality quantum and classical calculations for double ionization of laser-driven helium at 390 nm. Good qualitative agreement is observed. We show that the classical double ionization trajectories can be divided into two distinct pathways: direct and delayed. The direct pathway, with an almost simultaneous ejection of both electrons, emerges from small laser intensities. With increasing intensity its relative importance, compared to the delayed ionization pathway, increases until it becomes the predominant pathway for total electron escape energy below around 5.25 $U_{p}$…
Exchange correlation plays an important role in double-ionization of complex atoms by ultrashort laser pulse. In this work, we investigate two-photon double inner-shell electron ionization of neon induced by an attosecond extreme ultraviolent pulse in the framework of the quantum master equation. Our simulations reveal a distinct non-sequential effect via broadened double peaks, as a result of energy sharing between the two ionized electrons. When dissipation is included to show the interplay of coherence and decoherence, the two-photon double-ionization scaling law breaks down. We further stu…
The Auger effect from inner shells, which arises from resonance excitation of the valence electron of an atom by a weak electromagnetic wave, is discussed.
The interaction of strong pulsed femtosecond laser field with atoms having three equivalent electrons in the outer shell ($p^3$ configuration, e.g. nitrogen) is studied via numerical integration of a time-dependent Schrödinger equation on a grid approach. Single, double and triple ionization yields originating from a completely antisymmetric wave function are calculated and extracted using a restricted-geometry model with the soft-core potential and three active electrons. The direct triple ionization channel is found to produce a larger yield than the channel connected with single and then di…
An exterior complex scaling technique is applied to compute Stark resonance parameters for two molecular orbitals ($1b_{1}$ and $1b_{2}$) represented in the field-free limit in a single-center expansion. For electric DC field configurations that guarantee azimuthal symmetry of the solution the calculation is carried out by solving a two-dimensional partial differential equation in spherical polar coordinates using a finite-element method. The resonance positions and widths as a function of electric field strengths are shown for field strengths starting in the tunnelling ionization regime, and …
We present a theoretical model for atomic hydrogen ionization by electron impact in the instantaneous approximation and the more accurate non-instantaneous approach using the methods of Quantum Electrodynamics, for the binary coplanar and the coplanar asymmetric geometries. All electrons are described by plane wave functions in the coplanar binary geometry but in the asymmetric geometry the ejected electron is described by a Sommerfeld-Maue wave function. It is shown that the two models give the same results in the non relativistic limit for the binary coplanar geometry where the interactions …
We propose a new scenario to apply IR-pump-XUV-probe schemes to resolving strong field ionization induced and attosecond pulse driven electron-hole dynamics and coherence in real time. The coherent driving of both the infrared laser and the attoscond pulse correlates the dynamics of the core-hole and the valence-hole which leads to the otherwise forbidden absorption and emission of XUV photon. An analytical model is developed based on the strong-field approximation by taking into account of the essential multielectron configurations. The emission spectra from the core-valence transition and th…
We study double ionization (DI) dynamics of vibrating HeH$^+$ versus its isotopic variant HeT$^+$ in strong laser fields numerically. Our simulations show that for both cases, these two electrons in DI prefer to release together along the H(T) side. At the same time, however, the single ionization (SI) is preferred when the first electron escapes along the He side. This potential mechanism is attributed to the interplay of the rescattering of the first electron and the Coulomb induced large ionization time lag. On the other hand, the nuclear motion increases the contributions of these two elec…
For two-electron diatomic molecules, we investigate magnetic field effects in non-sequential double ionization where recollisions prevail. We do so by formulating a three-dimensional semi-classical model that fully accounts for the Coulomb singularities and for magnetic field effects during time propagation. Using this model, we identify a prominent signature of non-dipole effects. Namely, we demonstrate that the recolliding electron back-scatters along the direction of light propagation. Hence, this electron escapes opposite to the direction of change in momentum due to the magnetic field. Th…
Resonant Raman excitation by ultrafast vacuum ultraviolet laser pulses is a powerful means to study electron dynamics in molecules, but experiments must contend with linear background ionization: frequencies high enough to reach resonant core-valence transitions will usually ionize all occupied orbitals as well, and the ionization cross sections are usually dominant. Here we show that attosecond pulses can induce a process, transient impulsive stimulated Raman scattering, which can overwhelm valence ionization. Calculations are performed for atomic sodium, but the principal is valid for many m…
In this paper we present Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) calculations for single and multiple electron ionization of Argon atoms and ions in the threshold region. We are able to recover the Wannier exponents a for the power-law behavior of the cross section s versus excess energy: the exact value of the exponent as well as the existence of its saturation for multiple ionization appear to be related to how the total binding energy is shared between target electrons.
We analyze the dynamical processes behind delayed double ionization of atoms subjected to strong laser pulses. Using reduced models, we show that these processes are a signature of Hamiltonian chaos which results from the competition between the laser field and the Coulomb attraction to the nucleus. In particular, we exhibit the paramount role of the unstable manifold of selected periodic orbits which lead to a delay in these double ionizations. Among delayed double ionizations, we consider the case of "Recollision Excitation with Subsequent Ionization" (RESI) and, as a hallmark of this mechan…
When an electron is emitted from a sub-valence shell, a vacancy is created and there is a not-null probability for different post collisional ionization (PCI) processes giving rise to a higher target charge state. It is reasonable to consider that PCI is a time-delayed electron emission and, therefore, independent of the projectile. We include the tables of the branching ratios of $0-6$ post-collisionally emitted electrons after single ionization of Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe in different inner shells. These values have already been employed with good results in previous calculations of multiple ioniza…
High harmonic spectra show that laser-induced strong field ionization of water has a significant contribution from an inner-valence orbital. Our experiment uses the ratio of H2O and D2O high harmonic yields to isolate the characteristic nuclear motion of the molecular ionic states. The nuclear motion initiated via ionization of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) is small and is expected to lead to similar harmonic yields for the two isotopes. In contrast, ionization of the second least bound orbital (HOMO-1) exhibits itself via a strong bending motion which creates a significant iso…
We investigate ionization of neon atoms by an isolated attosecond pump pulse in the presence of two coherent extreme ultraviolet or x-ray probe fields. The probe fields are tuned to a core-valence transition in the residual ion and induce spectral shearing of the photoelectron distributions. We show that the photoelectron-ion coincidence signal contains an interference pattern that depends on the temporal structure of the attosecond pump pulse and the stimulated core-valence transition. Many-body perturbation theory is used to compute "atomic response times" for the processes and we find strik…
Study on ionization process of molecules in an intense infrared laser field is of paramount interest in strong-field physics and constitutes the foundation of imaging of molecular valence orbitals and attosecond science. We show measurement of alignment-dependent ionization probabilities of the lower-lying orbitals of the molecules by experimentally detecting alignment-dependence of fluorescence emission from tunnel ionized carbon dioxide molecules. The experimental measurements are compared with the theoretical calculations of strong field approximation (SFA) and molecular ADK models. Our res…
We report the general implementation of the relativistic equation-of-motion coupled-cluster method to calculate double ionization spectra (DI-EOMCC) of atomic and molecular systems. As a first application, this method is employed to calculate the principal valence double ionization potential values of He and alkaline earth metal (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba) atoms. Our results are compared with the results available from the national institute of standards and technology (NIST) database and other ab initio calculations. We have achieved an accuracy of ~ 0.1%, which is an improvement over the first p…
Electron motion on the (sub-)femtosecond time scale constitutes the fastest response in many natural phenomena such as light-induced phase transitions and chemical reactions. Whereas static electron densities in single molecules can be imaged in real-space using scanning tunnelling and atomic force microscopy, probing real-time electron motion inside molecules requires ultrafast laser pulses. Here, we demonstrate an all-optical approach to imaging an ultrafast valence electron wave packet in real-time with a time-resolution of a few femtoseconds. We employ a pump-probe-deflect scheme that allo…
We revisit the stabilization of ionization of atoms subjected to a superintense laser pulse using nonlinear dynamics. We provide an explanation for the lack of complete ionization at high intensity and for the decrease of the ionization probability as intensity is increased. We investigate the role of each part of the laser pulse (ramp-up, plateau, ramp-down) in this process. We emphasize the role of the choice for the ionization criterion, energy versus distance criterion.
New experimental quantum simulation platforms have recently been implemented with divalent atoms trapped in optical tweezer arrays with promising performance. The second valence electron also brings new propects through the so-called Isolated Core Excitation (ICE), however autoionization presents a strong limitation to this use. In this study, we propose and demonstrate a new approach to applying a sizable light shift to a Rydberg state with close-to-resonant ICE while avoiding auto-ionization. In particular, we have investigated ICE of ytterbium atoms in $^1S_0$ Rydberg states. Spectroscopic …
Propylene oxide, a favorite target of experimental and theoretical studies of circular dichroism, was recently discovered in interstellar space, further amplifying the attention to its role in the current debate on protobiological homochirality. In the present work, a photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence technique, using an ion-imaging detector and tunable synchrotron radiation in the 18.0-37.0 eV energy range, permits: (i)-to observe six double-ionization fragmentation channels, their relative yields being accounted for about two-thirds by the couple (C2H4+, CH2O+), one-fifth by (C2H3+…
We provide detailed analysis of strong field ionization of degenerate valence p orbitals by circularly polarized fields. Our analytical approach is conceptually equivalent to the Perelomov, Popov, and Terent'ev (PPT) theory and is virtually exact for short range potentials. After benchmarking our results against the PPT theory for s orbitals, we obtain the results for p orbitals. We also show that, as long as the dipole approximation is valid, both the PPT method and our results are gauge invariant, in contrast with widely used strong field approximation (SFA). Our main result, which has alrea…
We study the cancellation of differential ac Stark shifts in the 5s and 5p states of rubidium atom using the linearly and circularly polarized lights by calculating their dynamic polarizabilities. Matrix elements were calculated using a relativistic coupled-cluster method at the single, double and important valence triple excitations approximation including all possible non-linear correlation terms. Some of the important matrix elements were further optimized using the experimental results available for the lifetimes and static polarizabilities of atomic states. "Magic wavelengths" are determi…
The measurement of the tunneling time in attosecond experiments, termed attoclock, triggered a hot debate about the tunneling time, the role of time in quantum mechanics, where the interaction with the laser pulse involves two regimes of a different character, the multiphoton and the tunneling (field-) ionization. In the adiabatic field calibration, one of us (O. K.) developed in earlier works a real tunneling time model and showed that the model fits well to the experimental data of Landsmann et al. (Optica {\bf 1}, 343 2014). In the present work, it is shown that the model explains the exper…
The absolute single photoionization cross-section was measured for Cl-like K$^{2+}$ over the photon energy range from 44.2 - 69.7 eV at a constant energy resolution of 0.045 eV. The experiments were performed by merging an ion beam with a beam of synchrotron radiation from an undulator. The ground-state ionization threshold was measured at 0.004 eV energy resolution to be 45.717 $\pm$ 0.030 eV. The measurements are rich in resonance structure due to multiple Rydberg series of transitions to autoionizing states. These series are assigned spectroscopically using the quantum defect method, guided…
We present a novel experimental tool allowing for kinematically complete studies of break-up processes of laser-cooled atoms. This apparatus, the 'MOTReMi', is a combination of a magneto-optical trap (MOT) and a Reaction Microscope (ReMi). Operated in an ion-storage ring, the new setup enables to study the dynamics in swift ion-atom collisions on an unprecedented level of precision and detail. In first experiments on collisions with 1.5 MeV/amu O$^{8+}$-Li the pure ionization of the valence electron as well as ionization-excitation of the lithium target has been investigated.
Many applications are in need of accurate photoionization cross-sections, especially in the case of complex atoms. Configuration-interaction relativistic many-body perturbation theory (CI-RMBPT) that has been successful in predicting atomic energies, matrix elements between discrete states, and other properties is quite promising, but it has not been applied to photo-ionization problems owing to extra complications arising from continuum states. In this paper a method that will allow the conversion of discrete CI-(R)MPBT oscillator strengths (OS) to photo-ionization cross sections with minimal…
We present measurements of single-photon ionization time delays between valence electrons of argon and neon using a coincidence detection technique that allows for the simultaneous measurement of both species under identical conditions. Taking into account the chirp of the ionizing single attosecond pulse (attochirp) ensures that the clock of our measurement technique is started at the same time for both types of electrons, revealing with high accuracy and resolution energy-dependent time delays of a few tens of attoseconds. By comparing our results with theoretical predictions, we confirm tha…
We investigate the possible reasons for the discrepancy between the theoretical two-photon ionization cross section, $\sim 10^{-56}$ $\text{cm}^4 \text{s}$, of Ne$^{8+}$ obtained within the perturbative nonrelativistic framework for monochromatic light [J. Phys. B {\bf 34}, 4857 (2001)] and the experimental value, $7 \times 10^{-54}$ $\text{cm}^4 \text{s}$, reported in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 106}, 083002 (2011)] at a photon energy of 1110 eV. To this end, we consider Ne$^{8+}$ exposed to deterministic and chaotic ensembles of intense x-ray pulses. The time-dependent configuration-interaction s…
The two-color above-threshold ionization (ATI) of atoms and ions is investigated for a vortex Bessel beam in the presence of a strong near-infrared (NIR) light field. While the photoionization is caused by the photons from the weak but extreme ultra-violet (XUV) vortex Bessel beam, the energy and angular distribution of the photoelectrons and their sideband structure are affected by the plane-wave NIR field. We here explore the energy spectra and angular emission of the photoelectrons in such two-color fields as a function of the size and location of the target (atoms) with regard to the beam …
$γ$-ray spectra for positron annihilation with the core and valence electrons of the noble gas atoms Ar, Kr and Xe is calculated within the framework of diagrammatic many-body theory. The effect of positron-atom and short-range positron-electron correlations on the annihilation process is examined in detail. Short-range correlations, which are described through non-local corrections to the vertex of the annihilation amplitude, are found to significantly enhance the spectra for annihilation on the core orbitals. For Ar, Kr and Xe, the core contributions to the annihilation rate are found to be …
We present an experimental study on the photoionization dynamics of non-resonant one-color two-photon single valence ionization of neutral argon atoms. Using 9.3 eV photons produced via high harmonic generation and a 3-D momentum imaging spectrometer, we detect the photoelectrons and ions produced from non-resonant two-photon ionization in coincidence. Photoionization from the $3p$ orbital produces a photoelectron scattering wave function with $p$ and $f$ partial wave components, which interfere and result in a photoelectron angular distribution with peak amplitude perpendicular to the VUV pol…
We describe the influence of electron-impact multiple ionization (EIMI) on the ionization balance of collisionally ionized plasmas. We are unaware of any previous ionization balance calculations that have included EIMI, which is usually assumed to be unimportant. Here, we incorporate EIMI cross-section data into calculations of both equilibrium and non-equilibrium charge-state distributions (CSDs). For equilibrium CSDs, we find that EIMI has only a small effect and can usually be ignored. However, for non-equilibrium plasmas the influence of EIMI can be important. In particular, we find that f…
Few-photon induced breakup of helium is studied using a newly developed ab initio numerical framework for solving the six-dimensional time-dependent Schroedinger equation. We present details of the method and calculate (generalized) cross sections for the process of two-photon nonsequential (direct) double ionization at photon energies ranging from 39.4 to 54.4 eV, a process that has been very much debated in recent years and is not yet fully understood. In particular, we have studied the convergence property of the total cross section in the vicinity of the upper threshold (54.4 eV), versus t…
Modern intense ultrafast pulsed lasers generate an electric field of sufficient strength to permit tunnel ionization of the valence electrons in atoms. This process is usually treated as a rapid succession of isolated events, in which the states of the remaining electrons are neglected. Such electronic interactions are predicted to be weak, the exception being recollision excitation and ionization caused by linearly-polarized radiation. In contrast, it has recently been suggested that intense field ionization may be accompanied by a two-stage `shake-up' reaction. Here we report a unique combin…
Benzene, with its sea of delocalized $π$-electrons in the valence orbitals, is identified as an example of a class of molecules that enable establishment of the correspondence between intense ion-induced and laser-light-induced fields in experiments that probe ionization dynamics in temporal regimes spanning the attosecond and picosecond ranges.
Effects of confinement and electron correlations on the relative time delay between the 3s and 3p photoemissions of Ar confined endohedrally in C$_{60}$ are investigated using the time dependent local density approximation - a method that is also found to mostly agree with recent time delay measurements between the 3s and 3p subshells in atomic Ar. At energies in the neighborhood of 3p Cooper minimum, correlations with C$_{60}$ electrons are found to induce opposite temporal effects in the emission of Ar 3p hybridized symmetrically versus that of Ar 3p hybridized antisymmetrically with C$_{60}…
We present an experimental and theoretical energy- and angle-resolved study on the photoionization dynamics of non-resonant one-color two-photon single valence ionization of neutral N$_2$ molecules. Using 9.3 eV photons produced via high harmonic generation and a 3-D momentum imaging spectrometer, we detect the photoelectrons and ions produced from one-color two-photon ionization in coincidence. Photoionization of N$_2$ populates the X $^2Σ^+_g$, A $^2Π_u$, and B $^2Σ^+_u$ ionic states of N$_2^+$, where the photoelectron angular distributions associated with the X $^2Σ^+_g$ and A $^2Π_u$ state…
In this article we study the effects of higher body excitations in the relativistic CC calculations for atoms and ions with one valence electron using Fock-space CCSD, CCSD(T) and its unitary variants. The present study demonstrates that CCSD(T) estimates the ionization potentials (IPs) and the valence electron removal energies quite accurately for alkali atoms and singly ionized alkaline earth ions, but yields unphysical energy levels for atoms and/or ions with partially filled sub-shell like C II. We further demonstrate that the higher body excitation effects can be incorporated more effecti…
The capability of generating two intense, femtosecond x-ray pulses with controlled time delay opens the possibility of performing time-resolved experiments for x-ray induced phenomena. We have applied this capability to study the photoinduced dynamics in diatomic molecules. In molecules composed of low-Z elements, \textit{K}-shell ionization creates a core-hole state in which the main decay mode is an Auger process involving two electrons in the valence shell. After Auger decay, the nuclear wavepackets of the transient two-valence-hole states continue evolving on the femtosecond timescale, lea…
We report the first observation of intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD) in liquid water following inner-valence ionization. By combining a monochromatized table-top high-harmonic source with a liquid micro-jet, we recorded electron-electron coincidence spectra at two photon energies that identify the ICD electrons, together with the photoelectrons originating from the 2a1 inner-valence band of liquid water. Our results confirm the importance of ICD as a source of low-energy electrons in bulk liquid water and provide quantitative results for modeling the velocity distribution of the slow electr…
The charge transfer (ionization) of hydrogen Rydberg atoms (principal quantum number $n=25-34$) incident at a Cu(100) surface is investigated. Unlike fully metallic surfaces, where the Rydberg electron energy is degenerate with the conduction band of the metal, the Cu(100) surface has a projected bandgap at these energies, and only discrete image states are available through which charge transfer can take place. Resonant enhancement of charge transfer is observed at hydrogen principal quantum numbers for which the Rydberg energy matches the energy of one of the image states. The integrated sur…
To measure the mass of the electron neutrino, the "Electron Capture in Holmium-163" (ECHo) collaboration aims at calorimetrically measuring the spectrum following electron capture in $^{163}$Ho. The success of the ECHo experiment depends critically on the radiochemical purity of the $^{163}$Ho sample, which is ion-implanted into the calorimeters. For this, a $30 \, \textrm{kV}$ high transmission magnetic mass separator equipped with a resonance ionization laser ion source is used. To meet the ECHo requirements, the ion source unit was optimized with respect to its thermal characteristics and m…
The combination of photoelectron spectroscopy and ultrafast light sources is on track to set new standards for detailed interrogation of dynamics and reactivity of molecules. A crucial prerequisite for further progress is the ability to not only detect the electron kinetic energy, as done in traditional photoelectron spectroscopy, but also the photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) in the molecular frame. Here carbonylsulfide (OCS) and benzonitrile molecules, fixed in space by combined laser and electrostatic fields, are ionized with intense, circularly polarized, 30 femtosecond laser puls…
We study the photoionization properties of the C_60 versus C_240 molecule in a spherical jellium frame of density functional method. Two different approximations to the exchange-correlation (xc) functional are used: (i) The Gunnerson-Lundqvist parametrization [Phys. Rev. B 13, 4274 (1976)] with an explicit correction for the electron self-interaction (SIC) and (ii) a gradient-dependent augmentation of (i) by using the van Leeuwen and Baerends model potential [Phys. Rev. A 49, 2421 (1994)], in lieu of SIC, to implicitly restore electrons' asymptotic properties. Ground state results from the two…
