A theorem due to Hindman states that if $E$ is a subset of $\mathbb{N}$ with $d^*(E)>0$, where $d^*$ denotes the upper Banach density, then for any $\varepsilon>0$ there exists $N \in \mathbb{N}$ such that $d^*\left(\bigcup_{i=1}^N(E-i)\right) > 1-\varepsilon$. Curiously, this result does not hold if one replaces the upper Banach density $d^*$ with the upper density $\bar{d}$. Originally proved combinatorially, Hindman's theorem allows for a quick and easy proof using an ergodic version of Furstenberg's correspondence principle. In this paper, we establish a variant of the ergodic Furstenberg's correspondence principle for general amenable (semi)-groups and obtain some new applications, which include a refinement and a generalization of Hindman's theorem and a characterization of countable amenable minimally almost periodic groups.
In this paper we showed an equivalence of notions of regularity, transitivity and Ergodic principle for quadratic stochastic Volterra operators acting on the finite dimensional simplex.
We prove mean and pointwise ergodic theorems for the action of a discrete lattice subgroup in a connected algebraic Lie group, on infinite volume homogeneous algebraic varieties. Under suitable necessary conditions, our results are quantitative, namely we establish rates of convergence in the mean and pointwise ergodic theorems, which can be estimated explicitly. Our results give a precise and in most cases optimal quantitative form to the duality principle governing dynamics on homogeneous spaces. We illustrate their scope in a variety of equidistribution problems.
We exhibit proofs of two ergodic-theoretic results in the study of multiple recurrence using an analog of the density-increment argument of Roth and Gowers: Furstenberg's Multiple Recurrence Theorem (which implies Szemerédi's Theorem), and a two-dimensional special case of Furstenberg and Katznelson's multidimensional version of this theorem. The second of these requires also an analog of some recent finitary work by Shkredov. Many proofs of these multiple recurrence theorems are now known, but our main goal is to shed some further light on the heuristic correspondence principle that has grown…
Let $(X,Γ)$ be a topological system, where $Γ$ is a nilpotent group generated by $T_1,\ldots, T_d$ such that for each $T\in Γ$, $T\neq e_Γ$, $(X,T)$ is weakly mixing and minimal. For $d,k\in \mathbb{N}$, let $p_{i,j}(n), 1\le i\le k, 1\le j\le d$ be polynomials with rational coefficients taking integer values on the integers and $p_{i,j}(0)=0$. We show that if the expressions $g_i(n)=T_1^{p_{i,1}(n)}\cdots T_d^{p_{i,d}(n)}$ depends nontrivially on $n$ for $i=1,2,\cdots,k$, and for all $i\neq j\in \{1,2,\ldots,k\}$ the expressions $g_i(n)g_j(n)^{-1}$ depend nontrivially on $n$, then there is a …
Let T be an ergodic automorphism of the d-dimensional torus. In the spirit of Le Borgne, we give conditions on the Fourier coeffi cients of a real valued function f under which the Birkhoff sums satis fy a strong invariance principle. Next, reinforcing the condition on the Fourier coeffi cients in a natural way, we obtain explicit rates of convergence in the strong invariance principle.
For a large class of transitive non-hyperbolic systems, we construct nonhyperbolic ergodic measures with entropy arbitrarily close to its maximal possible value. The systems we consider are partially hyperbolic with one-dimension central direction for which there are positive entropy ergodic measures whose central Lyapunov exponent is negative, zero, or positive. We construct ergodic measures with zero central Lyapunov exponent whose entropy is positive and arbitrarily close to the topological entropy of the set of points with central Lyapunov exponent zero. This provides a restricted variatio…
Tao has recently proved that if $T_1,...,T_l$ are commuting, invertible, measure-preserving transformations on a dynamical system then for any $L^\infty$ functions $f_1,...,f_l$, the average $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=0}^{N-1}\prod_{i\leq l}f_i\circ T^n_i$ converges in the $L^2$ norm. Tao's proof is unusual in that it translates the problem into a more complicated statement about the combinatorics of finite spaces by using the Furstenberg correspondence "backwards". In this paper, we give an ergodic proof of this theorem, essentially a translation of Tao's argument to the ergodic setting. In order to…
We establish a "diagonal" ergodic theorem involving the additive and multiplicative groups of a countable field $K$ and, with the help of a new variant of Furstenberg's correspondence principle, prove that any "large" set in $K$ contains many configurations of the form $\{x+y,xy\}$. We also show that for any finite coloring of $K$ there are many $x,y\in K$ such that $x,x+y$ and $xy$ have the same color. Finally, by utilizing a finitistic version of our main ergodic theorem, we obtain combinatorial results pertaining to finite fields. In particular we obtain an alternative proof for a result ob…
If $α$ is an irreducible nonexpansive ergodic automorphism of a compact abelian group $X$ (such as an irreducible nonhyperbolic ergodic toral automorphism), then $α$ has no finite or infinite state Markov partitions, and there are no nontrivial continuous embeddings of Markov shifts in $X$. In spite of this we are able to construct a symbolic space $V$ and a class of shift-invariant probability measures on $V$ each of which corresponds to an $α$-invariant probability measure on $X$. Moreover, every $α$-invariant probability measure on $X$ arises essentially in this way. The last part of the pa…
We introduce a correspondence principle (analogous to the Furstenberg correspondence principle) that allows one to extract an infinite random graph or hypergraph from a sequence of increasingly large deterministic graphs or hypergraphs. As an application we present a new (infinitary) proof of the hypergraph removal lemma of Nagle-Schacht-Rödl-Skokan and Gowers, which does not require the hypergraph regularity lemma and requires significantly less computation. This in turn gives new proofs of several corollaries of the hypergraph removal lemma, such as Szemerédi's theorem on arithmetic progress…
New insights into the combinatorial structure of the Mandelbrot set are given by `Correspondence' and `Translation' Principles both conjectured and partially proved by E. Lau and D. Schleicher. We provide complete proofs of these principles and discuss results related to them. Note: The `Translation' and `Correspondence' Principles given earlier turned out to be false in the general case. In April 1999, an errata was added to discuss which parts of the two statements are incorrect and which parts remain true.
In this paper, we establish a noncommutative analogue of Calderón's transference principle, which allows us to deduce noncommutative ergodic maximal inequalities from the special case---operator-valued maximal inequalities. As applications, we deduce dimension-free estimates of noncommutative Wiener's maximal ergodic inequality and noncommutative Stein-Calderón's maximal ergodic inequality over Euclidean spaces. We also show the corresponding individual ergodic theorems. To show Wiener's pointwise ergodic theorem, we construct a dense subset on which pointwise convergence holds following a som…
We prove a log average almost-sure invariance principle (log asip) for renewal processes with positive i.i.d. gaps in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law with $0<α<1$. Dynamically, this means that renewal and Mittag-Leffler paths are forward asymptotic in the scaling flow, up to a time average. This strengthens the almost-sure invariance principle in log density we proved in {FisherTalet2011}. The scaling flow is a Bernoulli flow on a probability space. We study a second flow, the increment flow, transverse to the scaling flow, which preserves an infinite invariant measure constructe…
In this expository paper, we survey nowadays classical tools or criteria used in problems of convergence everywhere to build counterexamples: the Stein continuity principle, Bourgain's entropy criteria and Kakutani-Rochlin lemma, most classical device for these questions in ergodic theory. First, we state a $L^1$-version of the continuity principle and give an example of its usefulness by applying it to some famous problem on divergence almost everywhere of Fourier series. Next we particularly focus on entropy criteria in $L^p$, $2\le p\le \infty$ and provide detailed proofs. We also study the…
We provide a dynamical proof of the van der Corput inequality for sequences in Hilbert spaces that is based on the Furstenberg correspondence principle. This is done by reducing the inequality to the mean ergodic theorem for contractions on Hilbert spaces. The key difficulty therein is that the Furstenberg correspondence principle is, a priori, limited to scalar-valued sequences. We therefore discuss how interpreting the Furstenberg correspondence principle via the Gelfand--Naimark--Segal construction for C*-algebras allows to study not just scalar but general Hilbert space-valued sequences in…
Let $F$ be a non-discrete non-Archimedean locally compact field such that the characteristic $\mathrm{ch}(F)\ne 2$ and let $\mathcal{O}_F$ be the ring of integers in $F$. The main results of this paper are Theorem 1.2 that classifies ergodic probability measures on the space $\mathrm{Skew}(\mathbb{N}, F)$ of infinite skew-symmetric matrices with respect to the natural action of the group $\mathrm{GL}(\infty,\mathcal{O}_F)$ and Theorem 1.4, that gives an unexpected natural correspondence between the set of $\mathrm{GL}(\infty,\mathcal{O}_F)$-invariant Borel probability measures on $\mathrm{Sym}…
We prove a version of the Khinchine--Groshev theorem for Diophantine approximation of matrices subject to a congruence condition. The proof relies on an extension of the Dani correspondence to the quotient by a congruence subgroup. This correspondence together with a multiple ergodic theorem are used to study rational approximations in several congruence classes simultaneously. The result in this part holds in the generality of weighted approximation but is restricted to simple approximation functions.
In this article, we obtain a version of the noncommutative Banach Principle suitable to prove Wiener-Wintner type results for weights in W1-space. This is used to obtain noncommutative Wiener-Wintner type ergodic theorems for various types of weights for certain types of positive Dunford-Schwartz operators. We also study the b.a.u. (a.u.) convergence of some subsequential averages and moving averages of such operators
We study variational principles for metric mean dimension. First we prove that in the variational principle of Lindenstrauss and Tsukamoto it suffices to take supremum over ergodic measures. Second we derive a variational principle for metric mean dimension involving growth rates of measure-theoretic entropy of partitions decreasing in diameter which holds in full generality and in particular does not necessitate the assumption of tame growth of covering numbers. The expressions involved are a dynamical version of Renyi information dimension. Third we derive a new expression for Geiger-Koch in…
