We study the axial perturbations of spontaneously scalarized black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theories. We consider the nodeless solutions of the fundamental branch of the model studied in [1], which possesses a region of radially stable configurations, as shown in [2]. Here we show that almost all of the radially stable black holes are also stable under axial perturbations. When the axial potential is no longer strictly positive, we make use of the S-deformation method to show stability. As for the radial perturbations, hyperbolicity is lost below a certain critical horizon size for a fixed coupling constant. In the stable region, we determine the spectrum of the quasinormal modes by time evolution and by solving the associated time-independent eigenvalue problem.
We study the polar quasinormal modes of spontaneously scalarized black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. In previous works we showed that a set of nodeless solutions of the fundamental branch of the model studied in [1] are stable under both radial [2] and axial perturbations [3]. Here we calculate the polar quasinormal modes and show that this set of solutions is stable against the polar perturbations as well. Thus for a certain region of the parameter space the scalarized black holes are potentially stable physically interesting objects. The spectrum of the polar quasinormal modes diffe…
In the present paper we construct novel non-topological, spontaneously scalarized neutron stars in multi-scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity with maximally symmetric target space, and nontrivial map $φ:spacetime \rightarrow target\ space$. The theory is characterized by the fact that for some classes of coupling functions the field equations allow solutions with trivial scalar field, which coincide with the general relativistic ones. For a certain range of parameters those solutions lose stability and new branches of solutions with nontrivial scalar field bifurcate from the trivial branch. For a given…
The Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon Lagrangian is supplemented by a non-minimal coupling of the real scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. The non minimal coupling function is chosen as a general second degree polynomial in the scalar field for which the system is known to admit hairy black holes. The new interaction leads naturally to a violation of the null energy condition, allowing for wormholes to exist without the need of exotic matter. Spherically symmetric, charged wormholes are constructed and their domain of existence is determined in terms of the different choices of the non-min…

Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity has recently been known to exhibit spontaneous scalarization. In the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term the no-hair theorem can be evaded and novel black hole solutions with non-trivial scalar fields have been found besides the general relativistic solutions. In this paper, we aim to investigate the possibility of observationally testing Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity using thin accretion disk properties around such scalarized black holes. Using the Novikov-Thorne model, we numerically calculate the electromagnetic flux, temperature distribution, emiss…
We report on a numerical investigation of the stability of scalarized black holes in Einstein dilaton Gauss-Bonnet (EdGB) gravity in the full dynamical theory, though restricted to spherical symmetry. We find evidence that for sufficiently small curvature-couplings the resulting scalarized black hole solutions are nonlinearly stable. For such small couplings, we show that an elliptic region forms inside these EdGB black hole spacetimes (prior to any curvature singularity), and give evidence that this region remains censored from asymptotic view. However, for coupling values "superextremal" rel…
The black hole scalarization in a special Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (EsGB) gravity has been widely investigated in recent years. Especially, the spontaneous scalarization of scalar-free black hole in de-Sitter (dS) spacetime possesses interesting features due to the existence of cosmological horizon. In this work, firstly, we focus on the massive scalar field perturbation on Schwarzschild dS (SdS) black hole in a special EsGB theory. By analyzing the fundamental QNM frequency and time evolution of the scalar field perturbation, we figure out the unstable/stable regions in $(Λ,α)$-plane as w…
We study the instability of Schwarzschild black holes and the appearance of scalarized solutions in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity performing a time-domain analysis in a perturbative scheme. First we consider a quadratic coupling function and we perform an expansion for a small perturbation of the scalar field around the Schwarzschild solution up to the second order; we do not observe any stable scalarized configuration, in agreement with previous studies. We then consider the cases of quartic and exponential coupling, using an expansion for small values of the Newton's constant, in orde…

Recently, a new nonlinear mechanism for black hole scalarization, different from the standard spontaneous scalarization, was demonstrated to exist for scalar Gauss-Bonnet theories in which no tachyonic instabilities can occur. Thus Schwarzschild black hole is linearly stable but instead nonlinear instability can kick-in. In the present paper we extend on this idea in the case of multi-scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity with exponential coupling functions of third and fourth leading order in the scalar field. The main motivation comes from the fact that these theories admit hairy compact objects with …
The spontaneous scalarization of Schwarzscild-AdS is investigated in the Einstein-scalar-Gauss--Bonnet (ESGB) theory. Firstly, we construct scalarized AdS black holes numerically. Secondly, making use of the homotopy analysis method (HAM), we obtain analytical approximate solutions for scalarized AdS black holes in the ESGB theory. It is found that scalarized AdS black holes constructed numerically are consistent with analytical approximate solutions in the whole space.
In this paper, we study static and spherically symmetric black hole (BH) solutions in the scalar-tensor theories with the coupling of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term $ξ(ϕ) R_{\rm GB}$, where $R_{\rm GB}:=R^2-4R^{αβ}R_{αβ}+R^{αβμν}R_{αβμν}$ is the GB invariant and $ξ(ϕ)$ is a function of the scalar field $ϕ$. Recently, it was shown that in these theories scalarized static and spherically symmetric BH solutions which are different from the Schwarzschild solution and possess the nontrivial profiles of the scalar field can be realized for certain choices of the coupling functions an…
Black holes represent outstanding astrophysical laboratories to test the strong gravity regime, since alternative theories of gravity may predict black hole solutions whose may differ distinctly from those of General Relativity. When higher curvature terms are included in the gravitational action as, for instance, in the form of the Gauss-Bonnet term coupled to a scalar field, scalarized black holes result. Here we discuss several types of scalarized black holes and some of their properties.
We construct scalarized wormholes with a NUT charge in higher curvature theories. We consider both Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet and Einstein-scalar-Chern-Simons theories, following a recent paper by Brihaye et al. [1], where spontaneously scalarised Schwarzschild-NUT solutions were studied. By varying the coupling parameter and the scalar charge we determine the domain of existence of the scalarized nutty wormholes, and their dependence on the NUT charge. In the Gauss-Bonnet case the known set of scalarized wormholes [2] is reached in the limit of vanishing NUT charge. In the Chern-Simons case…
It is recently shown that, besides the Schwarzshcild black hole solution, there exist also scalarized black hole solutions in some Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories. In this paper, we construct analytical expressions for the metric functions and scalar field configurations for these scalarized black hole solutions approximately by employing the continued fraction parametrization method and investigate their thermodynamic stability. It is found that the horizon entropy of a scalarized black hole is always smaller than that of a Schwarzschild black hole, which indicates that these scalarized…
Scalar-tensor theories of gravity where a new scalar degree of freedom couples to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant can exhibit the phenomenon of spontaneous black hole scalarization. These theories admit both the classic black holes predicted by general relativity as well as novel hairy black hole solutions. The stability of the hairy black holes is strongly dependent on the precise form of the scalar-gravity coupling. A radial stability investigation revealed that all scalarized black hole solutions are unstable when the coupling between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant is quadratic …
Recently a new class of scalarized black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theories was discovered. What is special for these black hole solutions is that the scalarization is not due to the presence of matter, but {it is induced} by the curvature of spacetime itself. Moreover, more than one branch of scalarized solutions can bifurcate from the Schwarzschild branch, and these scalarized branches are characterized by the number of nodes of the scalar field. The next step is to consider the linear stability of these solutions, which is particularly important due to the fact that the Schwarzsc…
We construct black hole solutions with spin-induced scalarization in a class of models where a scalar field is quadratically coupled to the topological Gauss-Bonnet term. Starting from the tachyonically unstable Kerr solutions, we obtain families of scalarized black holes such that the scalar field has either even or odd parity, and we investigate their domain of existence. The scalarized black holes can violate the Kerr rotation bound. We identify "critical" families of scalarized black hole solutions such that the expansion of the metric functions and of the scalar field at the horizon no lo…
In a certain class of scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, the black holes and the neutron stars can undergo spontaneous scalarization -- a strong gravity phase transition triggered by a tachyonic instability due to the nonminimal coupling between the scalar field and the spacetime curvature. Studies of this phenomenon have, so far, been restricted mainly to the study of the tachyonic instability and stationary scalarized black holes and neutron stars. To date, no realistic physical mechanism for the formation of isolated scalarized black holes and neutron stars has been proposed. We study, for the fi…
In general relativity, astrophysical black holes are simple objects, being described by just their mass and spin. These simple solutions are not exclusive to general relativity, as they also appear in theories that allow for an extra scalar degree of freedom. Recently, it was shown that some theories which couple a scalar field with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant can have the same classic general relativity black hole solutions as well as hairy black holes. These scalarized solutions can be stable, having an additional "charge" term that has an impact on the gravitational-wave emission by black ho…
We carry out the stability analysis of the Schwarzschild black hole in Gauss-Bonnet and Chern-Simons-scalar theory. Here, we introduce two quadratic scalar couplings ($ϕ_1^2,ϕ_2^2$) to Gauss-Bonnet and Chern-Simons terms, where the former term is parity-even, while the latter one is parity-odd. The perturbation equation for the scalar $ϕ_1$ is the Klein-Gordon equation with an effective mass, while the perturbation equation for $ϕ_2$ is coupled to the parity-odd metric perturbation, providing a system of two coupled equations. It turns out that the Schwarzschild black hole is unstable against …
In the present paper we consider multi-scalar extension of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We focus on multi-scalar Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet models whose target space is a three-dimensional maximally symmetric space, namely either $\mathbb{S}^3$, $\mathbb{H}^3$ or $\mathbb{R}^3$, and in the case when the map $\text{\it spacetime} \to \text{\it target space}$ is nontrivial. We prove numerically the existence of black holes in this class of models for several Gauss-Bonnet coupling functions, including the case of scalarization. We also perform systematic study of a variety of black hole characterist…
In the present letter we show the existence of a fully nonlinear dynamical mechanism for the formation of scalarized black holes which is different from the spontaneous scalarization. We consider a class of scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity theories within which no tachyonic instability can occur. Although the Schwarzschild black holes are linearly stable against scalar perturbations, we show dynamically that for certain choices of the coupling function they are unstable against nonlinear scalar perturbations. This nonlinear instability leads to the formation of new black holes with scalar hair. The…
We study the dynamics of black holes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories that exhibit spontaneous black hole scalarization using recently introduced methods for solving the full, non-perturbative equations of motion. For one sign of the coupling parameter, non-spinning vacuum black holes are unstable to developing scalar hair, while for the other, instability only sets in for black holes with sufficiently large spin. We study scalarization in both cases, demonstrating that there is a range of parameter space where the theory maintains hyperbolic evolution and for which the instability sat…
In the present paper we derive strong constrains on scalarization in scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (sGB) gravity using observations of pulsars in close binary systems. Since scalarized neutron stars carry a nonzero scalar change, they emit scalar dipole radiation while inspiraling which speeds up the orbital decay. The observations support the conjecture that such radiation is either absent or very small for the observed binary pulsars. Using this, we determine the allowed range of parameters for sGB gravity. We also transfer the derived constraints to black holes in sGB gravity. It turns out that the m…
Spontaneous scalarization is a gravitational phenomenon in which deviations from general relativity arise once a certain threshold in curvature is exceeded, while being entirely absent below that threshold. For black holes, scalarization is known to be triggered by a coupling between a scalar and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. A coupling with the Ricci scalar, which can trigger scalarization in neutron stars, is instead known to not contribute to the onset of black hole scalarization, and has so far been largely ignored in the literature when studying scalarized black holes. In this paper, we stu…
The post-Newtonian dynamics of black hole binaries in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories of gravity depends on the so-called "sensitivities", quantities which characterize a black hole's adiabatic response to the time-dependent scalar field environment sourced by its companion. In this work, we calculate numerically the sensitivities of nonrotating black holes, including spontaneously scalarized ones, in three classes of Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity: the shift-symmetric, dilatonic and Gaussian theories. When possible, we compare our results against perturbative analytical results, f…
Recently new scalarized black hole solutions were constructed in the extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, where the scalar field is sourced by the curvature of the spacetime via the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. A natural extension of these results is to consider the case of nonzero black hole charge. In addition we have explored a large set of coupling functions between the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and the scalar field, that was not done until now even in the uncharged case, in order to understand better the behavior of the solutions and the deviations from pure general relativity. The result…
We perform the stability analysis on scalarized charged black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar (EMS) theory by computing quasinormal mode spectrum. It is noted that the appearance of these black holes with scalar hair is closely related to the instability of Reissner-Nordström black holes without scalar hair in the EMS theory. The scalarized black hole solutions are classified by the node number of $n=0,1,2,\cdots$, where $n=0$ is called the fundamental branch and $n=1,2,\cdots$ denote the $n$ excited branches. Here, we show that the $n=1,2$ excited black holes are unstable against against…
The tachyonic instability of the Kerr black holes is analyzed in the Einstein-scalar theory with the quadratic scalar couplings to two topological terms which are parity-even Gauss-Bonnet and parity-odd Chern-Simons terms. For positive coupling $α$, we use the (2+1)-dimensional hyperboloidal foliation method to derive the threshold curve which is the boundary between stable and unstable Kerr black holes by considering a spherically symmetric scalar-mode perturbation. In case of negative coupling, a newly bound of $a\ge0.26$ with $a$ the rotation parameter is found for unstable Kerr black holes…
Spontaneous scalarization of black holes in scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (sGB) gravity is a very interesting phenomenon allowing black holes to circumvent the no-hair theorem and acquire scalar hair while leaving the weak field regime of the theory practically unaltered. It was recently shown that if we allow for a different form of the coupling between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, a new type of scalarization is possible beyond the standard one that can be excited only nonlinearly. In this case the spectrum of black hole solutions can be more complicated, naturally opening the quest…
We analyze the stability of scalarized charged black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar (EMS) theory with quadratic coupling. These black holes are labelled by the number of $n=0,1,2,\cdots$, where $n=0$ is called the fundamental black hole and $n=1,2,\cdots$ denote the $n$-excited black holes. We show that the $n=0$ black hole is stable against full perturbations, whereas the $n=1,2$ excited black holes are unstable against the $s(l=0)$-mode scalar perturbation. This is consistent with the EMS theory with exponential coupling, but it contrasts to the $n=0$ scalarized black hole in the Einst…
In the presence of appropriate non-minimal couplings between a scalar field and the curvature squared Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term, compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes (BHs) can spontaneously scalarize, becoming a preferred vacuum. Such strong gravity phase transitions have attracted considerable attention recently. The non-minimal coupling functions that allow this mechanism are, however, always postulated ad hoc. Here we point out that families of such functions naturally emerge in the context of Higgs--Chern-Simons gravity models, which are found as dimensionally descents of hig…
It was recently shown that a scalar field suitably coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant $\mathcal{G}$ can undergo a spin-induced linear tachyonic instability near a Kerr black hole. This instability appears only once the dimensionless spin $j$ is sufficiently large, that is, $j \gtrsim 0.5$. A tachyonic instability is the hallmark of spontaneous scalarization. Focusing, for illustrative purposes, on a class of theories that do exhibit this instability, we show that stationary, rotating black hole solutions do indeed have scalar hair once the spin-induced instability threshold is exceeded, whi…
The class of scalar-tensor theories with the scalar field coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant has drawn great interest since solutions of spontaneous scalarization were found for black holes in these theories. We contribute to the existing literature a detailed study of the spontaneously scalarized neutron stars (NSs) in a typical theory where the coupling function of the scalar field takes the quadratic form and the scalar field is massive. The investigation here includes the spherical solutions of the NSs as well as their perturbative properties, namely the tidal deformability and the mom…
