We show that every compact, unitary two-dimensional CFT with an abelian conserved current has vanishing twist gap for charged primary fields with respect to the $\mathfrak{u}(1)\times$Virasoro algebra. This means that either the chiral algebra is enhanced by a charged primary field with zero twist or there is an infinite family of charged primary fields that accumulate to zero twist.
We discuss a deformation of superspace based on a hermitian twist. The twist implies a $\star$-product that is noncommutative, hermitian and finite when expanded in power series of the deformation parameter. The Leibniz rule for the twisted SUSY transformations is deformed. A minimal deformation of the Wess-Zumino action is proposed and its renormalizability properties are discussed. There is no tadpole contribution, but the two-point function diverges. We speculate that the deformed Leibniz rule, or more generally the twisted symmetry, interferes with renormalizability properties of the model…
The space-time symmetry of noncommutative quantum field theories with a deformed quantization is described by the twisted Poincaré algebra, while that of standard commutative quantum field theories is described by the Poincaré algebra. Based on the equivalence of the deformed theory with a commutative field theory, the correspondence between the twisted Poincaré symmetry of the deformed theory and the Poincaré symmetry of a commutative theory is established. As a by-product, we obtain the conserved charge associated with the twisted Poincaré transformation to make the twisted Poincaré symmetry…
By applying properly the concept of twist symmetry to the gauge invariant theories, we arrive at the conclusion that previously proposed in the literature noncommutative gauge theories, with the use of $\star$-product, are the correct ones, which possess the twisted Poincaré symmetry. At the same time, a recent approach to twisted gauge transformations is in contradiction with the very concept of gauge fields arising as a consequence of {\it local} internal symmetry. Detailed explanations of this fact as well as the origin of the discrepancy between the two approaches are presented.
The concept of twisted Poincaré symmetry, as well as some implications, are reviewed. The spin-statistics relation and the nonlocality of NC QFT are discussed in the light of this quantum symmetry. The possibility of a twisted symmetry principle for quantum field and gauge theories formulated on a noncommutative space-time is also explored.
The twist-deformed conformal algebra is constructed as a Hopf algebra with twisted co-product. This allows for the definition of conformal symmetry in a non-commutative background geometry. The twisted co-product is reviewed for the Poincaré algebra and the construction is then extended to the full conformal algebra. It is demonstrated that conformal invariance need not be viewed as incompatible with non-commutative geometry; the non-commutativity of the coordinates appears as a consequence of the twisting, as has been shown in the literature in the case of the twisted Poincaré algebra.
We present the evidence for two conjectures related to the twistor string. The first conjecture states that two super-Calabi Yaus -- the supertwistor space and the superambitwistor space -- form a mirror pair. The second conjecture is that the B-model on the twistor space can be seen as describing a 4-dimensional gravitational theory, whose partition function should involve a sum over ''space-time foams'' related to D1 branes in the topological string.
In a previous paper, we investigated the Hopf algebra structure in string theory and gave a unified formulation of the quantization of the string and the space-time symmetry. In this paper, this formulation is applied to the case with a nonzero B-field background, and the twist of the Poincare symmetry is studied. The Drinfeld twist accompanied by the B-field background gives an alternative quantization scheme, which requires a new normal ordering. In order to obtain a physical interpretation of this twisted Hopf algebra structure, we propose a method to decompose the twist into two successive…
We obtain the action for a curved superconformal abelian M5 brane with the background R-symmetry gauge field turned on. We then restrict ourselves to superconformal M5 brane on a sphere times flat Minkowski space. We choose R-symmetry SO(1,4) instead of SO(5), which enables us to partially twist on Minkowski space and replace it by some curved Lorentzian manifold. We obtain M5 brane actions on $M_{1,1} \times S^4$ and $M_{1,2} \times S^3$ where actions and all fields, including the background gauge field, are real. Dimensional reduction along time gives real 5d SYM actions with nonabelian gene…
We construct classical solutions of open string field theory which are not invariant under ordinary twist operation. From detailed analysis of the moduli space of the solutions, it turns out that our solutions become nontrivial at boundaries of the moduli space. The cohomology of the modified BRST operator and the CSFT potential evaluated by the level truncation method strongly support the fact that our nontrivial solutions correspond to the closed string vacuum. We show that the nontrivial solutions are equivalent to the twist even solution which was found by Takahashi and Tanimoto, and twist…
We consider quantum p-form fields interacting with a background dilaton. We calculate the variation with respect to the dilaton of a difference of the effective actions in the models related by a duality transformation. We show that this variation is defined essentially by the supertrace of the twisted de Rham complex. The supertrace is then evaluated on a manifold of an arbitrary dimension, with or without boundary.
We show the twisted Galilean invariance of the noncommutative parameter, even in presence of space-time noncommutativity. We then obtain the deformed algebra of the Schrödinger field in configuration and momentum space by studying the action of the twisted Galilean group on the non-relativistic limit of the Klein-Gordon field. Using this deformed algebra we compute the two particle correlation function to study the possible extent to which the previously proposed violation of the Pauli principle may impact at low energies. It is concluded that any possible effect is probably well beyond detect…
We point out a simple realization of gauge symmetry enhancement by Wilson lines in QFT with twisted compactification in extra dimensions. We illustrate this in the field contents taken from heterotic supergravity in arbitrary dimensions toroidally compactified.
Realizations of $κ$-Minkowski space linear in momenta are studied for time-, space- and light-like deformations. We construct and classify all such linear realizations and express them in terms of $\mathfrak{gl}(n)$ generators. There are three one-parameter families of linear realizations for time-like and space-like deformations, while for light-like deformations, there are only four linear realizations. The relation between deformed Heisenberg algebra, star product, coproduct of momenta and twist operator is presented. It is proved that for each linear realization there exists Drinfeld twist…
We consider M-theory compactified on a twisted 7-torus with fluxes when all the seven antisymmetric tensor fields in four dimensions have been dualized into scalars and thus the E_{7(7)} symmetry is recovered. We find that the Scherk--Schwarz and flux gaugings define a ``dual'' gauge algebra, subalgbra of E_{7(7)}, where some of the generators are associated with vector fields which are dual to part of the original vector fields (deriving from the 3-form). In particular they are dual to those vector fields which have been ``eaten'' by the antisymmetric tensors in the original theory by the (an…
We discuss R-symmetries in locally supersymmetric N=2 gauge theories coupled to hypermultiplets which can be thought of as effective theories of heterotic superstring models. In this type of supergravities a suitable R-symmetry exists and can be used to topologically twist the theory: the vector multiplet containing the dilaton-axion field has different R-charge assignments with respect to the other vector multiplets. Correspondingly a system of coupled instanton equations emerges, mixing gravitational and Yang--Mills instantons with triholomorphic hyperinstantons and axion-instantons. For the…
In the D1D5 CFT the twist operator of order 2 can twist together two copies in the untwisted sector into a single joined copy in the twisted sector. Traditionally, this effect is computed by using the covering map method. Recently, a new method was developed using the Bogoliubov ansatz and conformal symmetry to compute this effect in a toy model of one free boson. In this paper, we use this method with superconformal symmetry to compute the effect of the twist operator in the D1D5 CFT. This may provide more effective tools for computing correlation functions of twist operators in this system.
Algebra of the constraints of twistor-like p-branes restoring 3/4 fraction of the spontaneously broken D=4 N=1 supersymmetry is studied using the conversion method. Classical and quantum realizations of the BRST charge, unified superalgebra of the global generalized superconformal OSp(1|8) and Virasoro and Weyl symmetries are constructed. It is shown that the quantum Hermitian BRST charge is nilpotent and the quantized OSp(1|8) superalgebra is closed.
We describe the twist quantization of string worldsheet theory, which unifies the description of quantization and the target space symmetry, based on the twisting of Hopf and module algebras. We formulate a method of decomposing a twist into successive twists to analyze the twisted Hopf and module algebra structure, and apply it to several examples, including finite twisted diffeomorphism and extra treatment for zero modes.
As a preparation for a mathematically consistent study of the physics of symmetric spacetimes in a noncommutative setting, we study symmetry reductions in deformed gravity. We focus on deformations that are given by a twist of a Lie algebra acting on the spacetime manifold. We derive conditions on those twists that allow a given symmetry reduction. A complete classification of admissible deformations is possible in a class of twists generated by commuting vector fields. As examples, we explicitly construct the families of vector fields that generate twists which are compatible with Friedmann-R…
We introduce a new class of operators in any theory with a 't Hooft large-$N$ limit that we call colour-twist operators. They are defined by twisting the colour-trace with a global symmetry transformation and are continuously linked to standard, un-twisted single-trace operators. In particular, correlation functions between operators that are twisted by an R-symmetry of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM extend those in the $γ$-deformed theory. The most general deformation also breaks the Lorentz symmetry but preserves integrability in the examples we consider. In this paper, we focus on colour-twist operators …
We discuss two dimensional N-extended supersymmetry in Euclidean signature and its R-symmetry. For N=2, the R-symmetry is SO(2)\times SO(1,1), so that only an A-twist is possible. To formulate a B-twist, or to construct Euclidean N=2 models with H-flux so that the target geometry is generalised Kahler, it is necessary to work with a complexification of the sigma models. These issues are related to the obstructions to the existence of non-trivial twisted chiral superfields in Euclidean superspace.
The Null Melvin Twist to D4 brane background has been studied and putting in a bunch of coincident D8 and anti-D8 branes {\it a la} Sakai-Sugimoto model results in a breakdown of a global symmetry to its diagonal subgroup. The same is studied at finite temperature which results in the unchanged form of the chiral symmetry breaking and restoration curve. The effect of turning on a finite chemical potential do not changes the structure of the phase diagram with respect to Null Melvin Twist. Moreover, the confining and de-confining phase transition has the same structure as in the absence of Null…
We investigate deformed superconformal symmetries on non(anti)commutative (super)spaces from the point of view of the Drinfel'd twisted symmetries. We classify all possible twist elements derived from an abelian subsector of the superconformal algebra. The symmetry breaking caused by the non(anti)commutativity of the (super)spaces is naturally interpreted as the modification of their coproduct emerging from the corresponding twist element. The remaining unbroken symmetries are determined by the commutative properties of those symmetry generators possessing the twist element. We also comment on…
We realise the Shatashvili-Vafa superconformal algebra for $G_2$ string compactifications by combining Odake and free conformal algebras following closely the recent mathematical construction of twisted connected sum $G_2$ holonomy manifolds. By considering automorphisms of this realisation, we identify stringy analogues of two mirror maps proposed by Braun and Del Zotto for these manifolds.
Algebraic properties of the BRST symmetry associated to the twisted gauge symmetry occurring in the $κ$-Poincaré invariant gauge theories on the $κ$-Minkowski space are investigated. We find that the BRST operation associated to the gauge invariance of the action functional can be continuously deformed together with its corresponding Leibniz rule, into a nilpotent twisted BRST operation, leading to a twisted BRST symmetry algebra which may be viewed as a noncommutative analog of the usual Yang-Mills BRST algebra.
In this paper we continue the programme initiated in Part I, that is the study of entanglement measures in the sine-Gordon model. In both parts, we have focussed on one specific technique, that is the well-known connection between branch point twist field correlators and measures of entanglement in 1+1D integrable quantum field theory. Our papers apply this technique for the first time to a non-diagonal theory with an involved particle spectrum, the sine-Gordon model. In this Part II we focus on a different entanglement measure, the symmetry resolved entanglement, and develop its associated tw…
Based on the analysis of the most natural and general ansatz, we conclude that the concept of twist symmetry, originally obtained for the noncommutative space-time, cannot be extended to include internal gauge symmetry. The case is reminiscent of the Coleman-Mandula theorem. Invoking the supersymmetry may reverse the situation.
By twisting the commutation relations between creation and annihilation operators, we show that quantum conformal invariance can be implemented in the 2-d Moyal plane. This is an explicit realization of an infinite dimensional symmetry as a quantum algebra.
We investigate the Hopf algebra structure in string worldsheet theory and give a unified formulation of the quantization of string and the space-time symmetry. We reformulate the path integral quantization of string as a Drinfeld twist at the worldsheet level. The coboundary relation shows that the Drinfeld twist defines a module algebra which is equivalent to operators with normal ordering. Upon applying the twist, the space-time diffeomorphism is deformed into a twisted Hopf algebra, while the Poincaré symmetry is unchanged. This suggests a characterization of the symmetry: unbroken symmetri…
In the noncommutative geometry approach to the standard model we discuss the possibility to derive the extra scalar field sv- initially suggested by particle physicist to stabilize the electroweak vacuum - from a "grand algebra" that contains the usual standard model algebra. We introduce the Connes-Moscovici twisted spectral triples for the Grand Symmetry model, to cure a technical problem, that is the appearance, together with the field sv, of unbounded vectorial terms. The twist makes these terms bounded, and also permits to understand the breaking making the computation of the Higgs mass c…
In previous work, starting from the Moyal plane, we formulated interacting theories of matter and gauge fields with only the former fields twisted. In this approach, gauge theories, including the standard model, can be formulated without new gauge degrees of freedom. We show their underlying symmetry algebra to be Poincaré quasi-Hopf . The associated spacetime algebra is hence non-associative.
In this paper, we study the perturbative aspects of a "B-twisted" two-dimensional $(0,2)$ heterotic sigma model on a holomorphic gauge bundle $\mathcal E$ over a complex, hermitian manifold $X$. We show that the model can be naturally described in terms of the mathematical theory of ``Chiral Differential Operators". In particular, the physical anomalies of the sigma model can be reinterpreted as an obstruction to a global definition of the associated sheaf of vertex superalgebras derived from the free conformal field theory describing the model locally on $X$. In addition, one can also obtain …
We discuss the notion of translation-invariant vacua for 2d chiral algebras and relate it to the notion of the associated variety. The two-dimensional chiral algebra associated to four-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ $U(N)$ SYM has a conjectural holographic dual involving the B-model topological string theory. We study the effect of non-zero vacuum expectation values on the chiral algebra correlation functions and derive a holographic dual Calabi-Yau geometry. We test our proposal by a large $N$ analysis of correlation functions of determinant operators, whose saddles can be matched with semi-classic…
We consider radially twisted nanotubes in the low-energy approximation where the dynamics is governed by a one-dimensional Dirac equation. The mechanical deformation of the nanotubes is reflected by the presence of an effective vector potential. We discuss twisted carbon and boron-nitride nanotubes, where deformations give rise to periodic and nonperiodic finite-gap Hamiltonians. The intimate relation of these systems with the integrable Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur hierarchy is exploited in the study of their spectral properties as well as in the computation of the (local) density of states. We…
Topological spin liquids can be described by topological gauge theories with global symmetry. Due to the presence of both nontrivial bulk deconfined gauge fluxes and global symmetry, topological spin liquids are examples of the so-called "Symmetry Enriched Topological phases" (SET). In this paper, we find that, in some twisted versions of topological gauge theories (with discrete Abelian gauge group $G_g$), implementing a global symmetry (denoted by $G_s$) is anomalous although symmetry charge carried by topological point-like excitations is normally fractionalized and classified by the second…
Grand symmetry models in noncommutative geometry have been introduced to explain how to generate minimally (i.e. without adding new fermions) an extra scalar field beyond the standard model, which both stabilizes the electroweak vacuum and makes the computation of the mass of the Higgs compatible with its experimental value. In this paper, we use Connes-Moscovici twisted spectral triples to cure a technical problem of the grand symmetry, that is the appearance together with the extra scalar field of unbounded vectorial terms. The twist makes these terms bounded and - thanks to a twisted versio…
Tractors and twistors can be obtained via gauge reduction of the conformal Cartan geometry, thanks to the dressing field method. Perhaps surprisingly, it is possible to reduce the gauge symmetry further still. One can indeed erase Weyl symmetry thanks to the tractor field, in a way reminiscent of how the C^2-scalar field allows to erase SU(2) in the electroweak model. This suggests an alternative to the Weyl or conformal spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) that some authors proposed as improvement for Standard Model physics or inflationary cosmology. Here, after gauge reduction via dressing, t…
