We study a system of strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) bosons on a ring pierced by a synthetic magnetic flux tube. By the Fermi-Bose mapping, this system is related to the system of spin-polarized non-interacting electrons confined on a ring and pierced by a solenoid (magnetic flux tube). On the ring there is an external localized delta-function potential barrier $V(ϕ)=g δ(ϕ-ϕ_0)$. We study the Berry phase associated to the adiabatic motion of delta-function barrier around the ring as a function of the strength of the potential $g$ and the number of particles $N$. The behavior of the Berry phase can be explained via quantum mechanical reflection and tunneling through the moving barrier which pushes the particles around the ring. The barrier produces a cusp in the density to which one can associate a missing charge $Δq$ (missing density) for the case of electrons (bosons, respectively). We show that the Berry phase (i.e., the Aharonov-Bohm phase) cannot be identified with the quantity $Δq/\hbar \oint \mathbf{A}\cdot d\mathbf{l}$. This means that the missing charge cannot be identified as a (quasi)hole. We point out to the connection of this result and recent studies of synthetic anyons in noninteracting systems. In addition, for bosons we study the weakly-interacting regime, which is related to the strongly interacting electrons via Fermi-Bose duality in 1D systems.
In this paper we study the properties of cold bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice system where Bose-condensation occurs at a momentum point k with non-zero k-space Berry curvature. By combining results from both analytic and numerical approaches, we show that the boson system carries non-universal, temperature dependent equilibrium angular momentum and edge current at low temperatures.

A binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensate structures exhibit an incredible richness in terms of holding different kinds of phases. Depending on the ratio of the inter- and intra-atomic interactions, the transition from mixed to separated phase, which is also known as the miscibility-immiscibility transition, has been reported in different setups and by different groups. Here, we describe such type of quantum phase transition in an effective Hamiltonian approach, by applying Holstein-Primakoff transformation in the limit of large number of particles. We demonstrate that non-trivial geometri…
As an "input" state of a linear (Mach-Zehnder or Ramsey) interferometer, the phase-squeezed state proposed by Berry and Wiseman exhibits the best sensitivity approaching to the Heisenberg limit [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 5098 (2000)]. In this paper, we find that it can be generated dynamically with atomic Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a symmetric double well. Similar with the Berry and Wiseman's state, the prepared states show the squeezing along spin operator S_y and the anti-squeezing along S_z, leading to a sub-shot-noise of the phase sensitivity.
Since the recent experimental realization of synthetic Rashba spin-orbit coupling paved a new avenue for exploring and engineering topological phases in ultracold atoms, a precise, solid detection of Berry phase has been desired for unequivocal characterization of system topology. Here, we propose a scheme to conduct momentum-space Aharonov-Bohm interferometry in a Rashba spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate with a sudden change of in-plane Zeeman field, capable of measuring the Berry phase of Rashba energy bands. We find that the Berry phase with the presence of a Dirac point is direct…
Motivated by recent progress in trapping Bose-Einstein condensed atoms in toroidal potentials, we examine solitary-wave solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation subject to periodic boundary conditions. When the circumference of the ring is much larger than the size of the wave, the density profile is well approximated by that of an infinite ring, however the density and the velocity of propagation cannot vanish simultaneously. When the size of the ring becomes comparable to the size of the wave, the density variation becomes sinusoidal and the velocity of propagation saturates to a cons…
We revisit here the Kibble-Zurek mechanism for superfluid bosons slowly driven across the transition towards the Mott-insulating phase. By means of a combination of the Time-Dependent Variational Principle and a Tree-Tensor Network, we characterize the current flowing during annealing in a ring-shaped one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with artificial classical gauge field on up to 32 lattice sites. We find that the superfluid current shows, after an initial decrease, persistent oscillations which survive even when the system is well inside the Mott insulating phase. We demonstrate that the am…
A mixture of two distinguishable Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a ring potential has numerous interesting properties under rotational and solitary-wave excitation. The lowest-energy states for a fixed angular momentum coincide with a family of solitary-wave solutions. In the limit of weak interactions, exact diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian is possible and permits evaluation of the complete excitation spectrum of the system.
We study a physical system consisting of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined to a ring shaped lattice potential interrupted by three weak links. The system is assumed to be driven by an effective flux piercing the ring lattice. By employing path integral techniques, we explore the effective quantum dynamics of the system in a pure quantum phase dynamics regime. Moreover, the effects of the density's quantum fluctuations are studied through exact diagonalization analysis of the spectroscopy of the Bose-Hubbard model. We demonstrate that a clear two-level system emerges by tuning the magnetic fl…
Diabolical points (degeneracies) can naturally occur in spectra of two-dimensional quantum systems and classical wave resonators due to simple symmetries. Geometric Berry phase is associated with these spectral degeneracies. Here, we demonstrate a diabolical point and the corresponding Berry phase in the spectrum of hybrid light-matter quasiparticles -- exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. It is well known that sufficiently strong optical pumping can drive exciton-polaritons to quantum degeneracy, whereby they form a macroscopically populated quantum coherent state similar to a B…
The quantum dynamics of population-balanced fractional vortices and population-imbalanced vortices in an effective two-state bosonic system, made of two coupled discrete circuits with few sites, is addressed within the Bose-Hubbard model. % We show that for low on-site interaction, the tunneling of quantized vortices between the rings performs a coherent, oscillating dynamics connecting current states with chiral symmetry. The vortex-flux transfer dually follows the usual sinusoidal particle current of the Josephson effect, in good agreement with a mean-field approximation. Within such regime,…
We present a model of a spin-squeezed rotation sensor utilising the Sagnac effect in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring trap. The two input states for the interferometer are seeded using Raman pulses with Laguerre-Gauss beams and are amplified by the bosonic enhancement of spin-exchange collisions, resulting in spin-squeezing and potential quantum enhancement in the interferometry. The ring geometry has an advantage over separated beam path atomic rotation sensors due to the uniform condensate density. We model the interferometer both analytically and numerically for realistic experim…
We present variational and numerical solutions for the problem of stability of persistent currents in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate of distinguishable atoms which rotate in a ring potential. We consider the general class of solutions of constant density in the two components separately, thus providing an alternative approach of the solution of the same problem given recently by Zhigang Wu and Eugene Zaremba [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 88}, 063640 (2013)]. Our approach provides a physically transparent solution of this delicate problem. Finally, we give a unified and simple picture of the low…
We investigate the geometric phase or Berry phase of adiabatic quantum evolution in the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) systems governed by nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii(GP) equations. We study how this phase is modified by the nonlinearity and find that the Bogoliubov fluctuations around the eigenstates are accumulated during the nonlinear adiabatic evolution and contribute a finite phase of geometric nature. A two-mode BEC model is used to illustrate our theory. Our theory is applicable to other nonlinear systems such as paraxial wave equation for nonlinear optics and Ginzburg-Landau equations f…
In a shaken Bose-Einstein condensate, confined in a vibrating trap, there can appear different nonlinear coherent modes. Here we concentrate on two types of such coherent modes, vortex ring solitons and vortex rings. In a cylindrical trap, vortex ring solitons can be characterized as nonlinear Hermite-Laguerre modes, whose description can be done by means of optimized perturbation theory. The energy, required for creating vortex ring solitons, is larger than that needed for forming vortex rings. This is why, at a moderate excitation energy, vortex rings appear before vortex ring solitons. The …
We investigate a three-site ring system with a small number of quantum degenerate bosons and fermions. By means of the exact diagonalization of the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we show that the symmetry of the ground state configuration is a function of both the boson-boson and the inter-species interaction in the system. The phase diagram of the system, constructed by computing the exact two-body spatial correlations, reveals nontrivial insulating phases that exist even in the strong bosonic tunneling limit and for incommensurate filling of bosons. These insulating phases are due to the in…
By using Bogoliubov transformations to construct the ground states of fermionic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluids and weakly-interacting Bose gases supporting Bose Einstein Condensation (BEC), their algebraic structures and implications can be analyzed in detail. Both ground states are generalized squeezed coherent states saturating a generalized Heisenberg uncertainty relation, and they acquire quantized Berry phases when the corresponding systems are transported along a closed path in their parameter spaces. While the Berry phase of the BCS ground state depends on the total particl…
Three coaxial quantized vortex rings in a Bose-Einstein condensate exhibit aperiodic leapfrogging dynamics. It is found that such circular vortex rings are dynamically unstable against deformation breaking axial rotational symmetry. The dynamics of the system are analyzed using the Gross-Pitaevskii and vortex-filament models. The dependence of the instability on the initial arrangement of the vortex rings is investigated. The system is found to be significantly unstable for a specific configuration of the three vortex rings.
We study the phase-fluctuating condensate regime of ultra-cold atoms trapped in a ring-shaped trap geometry, which has been realized in recent experiments. We first consider a simplified box geometry, in which we identify the conditions to create a state that is dominated by thermal phase-fluctuations, and then explore the experimental ring geometry. In both cases we demonstrate that the requirement for strong phase fluctuations can be expressed in terms of the total number of atoms and the geometric length scales of the trap only. For the ring-shaped trap we discuss the zero temperature limit…
We consider a cavity optomechanical system consisting of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) interacting with two counterpropagating traveling-wave modes in an optical ring cavity. In contrast to the more familiar case where the condensate is driven by the standing-wave field of a high-$Q$ Fabry-P{é}rot cavity we find that both symmetric and antisymmetric collective density side modes of the BEC are mechanically excited by the light field. In the semiclassical, mean-field limit where the light field and the zero-momentum mode of the condensate are treated classically the system is found to exhibi…
We show that an Ideal Bose gas that is contained within a very thin ring exhibits phenomena analogous to the Bloch and Josephson oscillations of a charged Ideal Fermi gas in a thin ring. If the walls of the ring are constrained to have an angular velocity $ω$, the angular momentum has an anomalous component that is periodic in $ω$, with a period equal to the quantum of angular velocity $ω_{0}\equiv \hbar /mR^{2}$. If a constant applied torque is applied to the walls, there will be component of the angular momentum of the gas that is periodic in time, with a 'Josephson frequency' given by $f_{J…
We propose a protocol for the simultaneous controlled creation of multiple concentric ring dark solitons in a toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. The decay of these solitons into a vortex-antivortex necklace shows revivals of the soliton structure, but eventually becomes an example of quantum turbulence.
We consider large rings of weakly-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, analyzing their transition to chaotic dynamics and loss of coherence. Initially, a ring is considered to be in an eigenstate, i.e. in a commensurate configuration with equal site fillings and equal phase differences between neighboring sites. Such a ring should exhibit a circulating current whose value will depend on the initial, non-zero phase difference. The appearance of such currents is a signature of an established coherence along the ring. If phase difference falls between $π/2$ and $3π/2$ and interparticle interaction …
We discuss the topology of Bogoliubov excitation bands from a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. Since the Bogoliubov equation for a bosonic system is non-Hermitian, complex eigenvalues often appear and induce dynamical instability. As a function of momentum, the onset of appearance and disappearance of complex eigenvalues is an exceptional point (EP), which is a point where the Hamiltonian is not diagonalizable and hence the Berry connection and curvature are ill-defined, preventing defining topological invariants. In this paper, we propose a systematic procedure to remove EPs fr…
We study the rotational properties of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensed gas of distinguishable atoms which are confined in a ring potential using both the mean-field approximation, as well as the method of diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian. We demonstrate that the angular momentum may be given to the system either via single-particle, or "collective" excitation. Furthermore, despite the complexity of this problem, under rather typical conditions the dispersion relation takes a remarkably simple and regular form. Finally, we argue that under certain conditions the dispersion re…
We investigate spatiotemporal vortex rings with phase dislocation both in space and time. It is demonstrated that these structures naturally appear as a periodical in time edge phase dislocation at the low-density region of a perturbed atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The condition of formation, dynamics and stability of the spatiotemporal vortex rings are investigated for repulsive and attractive interatomic interactions. These theoretical findings open up a perspective for experimental observation of novel type of topological coherent structures in ultracold gases.
We use analytic soliton solutions of a two-component Bose gas in ring geometry to analyze the mean-field yrast spectrum of the system. We find that the spectrum exhibits a surprisingly rich structure as a result of the interplay of interparticle interactions and population imbalance. We discuss the implication of these results in regard to the possibility of persistent currents at higher angular momenta.
Three-dimensional topological Weyl semimetals can generally support a zero-dimensional Weyl point characterized by a quantized Chern number or a one-dimensional Weyl nodal ring (or line) characterized by a quantized Berry phase in the momentum space. Here, in a dissipative system with particle gain and loss, we discover a new type of topological ring, dubbed Weyl exceptional ring consisting of exceptional points at which two eigenstates coalesce. Such a Weyl exceptional ring is characterized by both a quantized Chern number and a quantized Berry phase, which are defined via the Riemann surface…
We propose an alternative implementation of the Projected Gross-Pitaevskki equation adapted for numerical modeling of the atomic Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a toroidally-shaped potential. We present an accurate and efficient scheme to evaluate the required matrix elements and calculate time evolution of the matter wave field. We analyze the stability and accuracy of the developed method for equilibrium and nonequilibrium solutions in a ring-shaped trap with additional barrier potential corresponding to recent experimental realizations.
We study formation and stabilization of vortex rings in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. We suggest a novel approach for generating and trapping of vortex rings by 'optical tweezers'--two blue-detuned optical beams forming a toroidal void in the bulk of a magnetically or optically confined condensate cloud. We demonstrate that matter-wave vortex rings trapped within the void are energetically and dynamically stable. Our theoretical findings suggest the possibility for generation, stabilization, and nondestructive manipulation of quantized vortex rings in experimentally feasible trapping confi…
We study properties of a trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a circular ring or a spherical shell using the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In the case of the ring-shaped trap we consider different orientations of the ring with respect to the polarization direction of the dipoles. In the presence of long-range anisotropic dipolar and short-range contact interactions, the anisotropic density distribution of the dipolar BEC in both traps is discussed in detail. The stability condition of the dipolar BEC in both traps is illustrated in phase plot of dipolar and contact interac…
We investigate the metastability of a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a quasi-one-dimensional rotating ring trap by solving the spin-1 Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We find analytical solutions that exhibit spin textures. By performing linear stability analysis, it is shown that the solutions can become metastable states. We also find that the number of Nambu-Goldstone modes changes at a certain rotation velocity without changing the continuous symmetry of the order parameter.
We consider a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a ring trap in a rotating frame, and show how to determine the response of such a configuration to being in a rotating frame, via accumulation of a Sagnac phase. This may be accomplished either through population oscillations, or the motion of spatial density fringes. We explicitly include the effect of interactions via a mean-field description, and study the fidelity of the dynamics relative to an ideal configuration.
The rotational properties of a mixture of two distinguishable Bose gases that are confined in a ring potential provide novel physical effects that we demonstrate in this study. Persistent currents are shown to be stable for a range of the population imbalance between the two components at low angular momentum. At higher values of the angular momentum, even small admixtures of a second species of atoms make the persistent currents highly fragile.
We demonstrate the role played by a ring trap and the associated ring geometry in inducing self-interference of a toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate. We start by showing how the existence of the self-interference can be inferred from the Wigner function representation of the ring. Then, using analytical expressions for the time-evolution of a freely expanding ring condensate with and without a persistent current, we show that the self-interference of the ring condensate is possible only in the absence of the persistent current. We conclude by proposing an experimental protocol for the creation …
Rotational superradiance is one of the most fascinating phenomena in black-hole physics. Here, with the aim of probing quantum properties of superradiance in the lab, we investigate the interaction of the acoustic waves with quantum vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in the framework of dissipative mean-field model. We find the conditions of the acoustic-induced quantum phase slips in condensates with ring topology and discuss the possibility of observing an acoustic analogue of quantum superradiance in ultracold atomic gases.
We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate, which is confined in a very tight toroidal/annular trap, in the presence of a potential, which breaks the axial symmetry of the Hamiltonian. We investigate the stationary states of the condensate, when its density distribution co-rotates with the symmetry-breaking potential. As the strength of the potential increases, we have a gradual transition from vortex excitation to solid-body-like motion. Of particular importance are states where the system is static and yet it has a nonzero current/circulation, which is a realization of persistent currents/reflec…
Interferometric measurements with matter waves are established techniques for sensitive gravimetry, rotation sensing, and measurement of surface interactions, but compact interferometers will require techniques based on trapped geometries. In a step towards the realization of matter wave interferometers in toroidal geometries, we produce a large, smooth ring trap for Bose-Einstein condensates using rapidly scanned time-averaged dipole potentials. The trap potential is smoothed by using the atom distribution as input to an optical intensity correction algorithm. Smooth rings with a diameter up …
Earlier work has shown that ring dark solitons in two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate are generically unstable. In this work, we propose a way of stabilizing the ring dark soliton via a radial Gaussian external potential. We investigate the existence and stability of the ring dark soliton upon variations of the chemical potential and also of the strength of the radial potential. Numerical results show that the ring dark soliton can be stabilized in a suitable interval of external potential strengths and chemical potentials. We also explore different proposed particle pictures considering …
The system of a transversely pumped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) coupled to a lossy ring cavity can favor a supersolid steady state. Here we find the existence of supersolid gap soliton in such a driven-dissipative system. By numerically solving the mean-field atom-cavity field coupling equations, gap solitons of a few different families have been identified. Their dynamical properties, including stability, propagation and soliton collision, are also studied. Due to the feedback atom-intracavity field interaction, these supersolid gap solitons show numerous new features compared with the usu…
We study the instability of a ring Bose-Einstein condensate under a periodic modulation of inter-atomic interactions. The condensate exhibits temporal and spatial patterns induced by the parametric resonance, which can be characterized by Bogoliubov quasi-particle excitations in the Floquet basis. As the ring geometry significantly limits the number of excitable Bogoliubov modes, we are able to capture the non-linear dynamics of the condensate using a three-mode model. We further demonstrate the robustness of the temporal and spatial patterns against disorder, which are attributed to the mode-…
We demonstrate the feasibility of generation of quasi-stable counter-propagating solitonic structures in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a realistic toroidal geometry, and identify optimal parameter regimes for their experimental observation. Using density engineering we numerically identify distinct regimes of motion of the emerging macroscopic excitations, including both solitonic motion along the azimuthal ring direction, such that structures remain visible after multiple collisions even in the presence of thermal fluctuations, and snaking instabilities leading to the decay o…
We analyze the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in rotating ring lattices made of a few sites, and show how rotation maps the states found in this finite system into those belonging to a static infinite lattice. Ring currents and soliton states in the absence of a lattice find their continuation in the presence of the lattice as nonlinear Bloch waves and soliton-like states connecting them. Both bright gap solitons and dark-soliton trains are shown to connect continuously to linear solutions. The existence of adiabatic paths upon varying rotation frequency between states with quant…
Motivated by recent experiments on toroidal Bose-Einstein condensates in all-optical traps with tunable weak links, we study the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model on a ring-shaped lattice with a small region of weak hopping integrals using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Besides the usual Mott insulating and superfluid phases, we find a phase which is compressible but non superfluid with a local Mott region. This `local Mott' phase extends in a large region of the phase diagram. These results suggest that the insulating and conducting phases can be tuned by a local parameter which may provid…
We study the time evolution of a supercurrent imprinted on a one-dimensional ring of interacting bosons in the presence of a defect created by a localized barrier. Depending on interaction strength and temperature, we identify various dynamical regimes where the current oscillates, is self-trapped or decays with time. We show that the dynamics are captured by a dual Josephson model and involve phase slips of thermal or quantum nature.
We experimentally investigate the dynamic instability of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical ring resonator that is asymmetrically pumped in both directions. We find that, beyond a critical resonator-pump detuning, the system becomes stable regardless of the pump strength. Phase diagrams and quenching curves are presented and described by numerical simulations. We discuss a physical explanation based on a geometric interpretation of the underlying nonlinear equations of motion.
We show that the onset of the snake instability of ring dark solitons requires a broken symmetry. We also elucidate explicitly the connection between imaginary Bogoliubov modes and the snake instability, predicting the number of vortex-anti-vortex pairs produced. In addition, we propose a simple model to give a physical motivation as to why the snake instability takes place. Finally, we show that tight confinement in a toroidal potential actually enhances soliton decay due to inhibition of soliton motion.
We study the phase transitions in a one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate on a ring whose atomic scattering length is modulated periodically along the ring. By using a modified Bogoliubov method to treat such a nonlinear lattice in the mean field approximation, we find that the phase transitions are of different orders when the modulation period is 2 and greater than 2. We further perform a full quantum mechanical treatment based on the time-evolving block decimation algorithm which confirms the mean field results and reveals interesting quantum behavior of the system. Our studies yield imp…
Considerable progress in experimental studies of atomic gases in a toroidal geometry has opened up novel prospects for the investigation of fundamental properties of superfluid states and creation of new configurations for atomtronic circuits. In particular, atomic Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in a dual-ring trap suggest a possibility to consider the tunneling dynamics between coupled condensates with different angular momenta. Accordingly, we address the tunneling in a pair of coaxial ring-shaped condensates separated by a horizontal potential barrier. A weak-coupling truncated (finite-mo…
We study dark-bright ring solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. In the limit of large densities of the dark component, we describe the soliton dynamics by means of an equation of motion for the ring radius. The presence of the bright, "filling" species is demonstrated to have a stabilizing effect on the ring dark soliton. Near the linear limit, we discuss the symmetry-breaking bifurcations of dark-bright soliton stripes and vortex-bright soliton clusters from the dark-bright ring and relate the stabilizing effect of filling to changes in the bifurcation diagram. Finally, we show…
We report on a theoretical study of a ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate with Raman-induced spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling. We analyze the structure of the ground-state of the system depending different physical parameters and reveal a peculiar fine structure within the stripe phase on the phase diagram. We demonstrate the existence of the predicted stripe sub-phases within a wide range of physical parameters, their traceability through physical observables, and compare the results with several commonly used variational approximations. We also show that predicted sub-phases of the st…
Quasiparticle approach to dynamics of dark solitons is applied to the case of ring solitons. It is shown that the energy conservation law provides the effective equations of motion of ring dark solitons for general form of the nonlinear term in the generalized nonlinear Schroedinger or Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Analytical theory is illustrated by examples of dynamics of ring solitons in light beams propagating through a photorefractive medium and in non-uniform condensates confined in axially symmetric traps. Analytical results agree very well with the results of our numerical simulations.
We study the collective oscillations of three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) excited by a vortex ring. We identify independent, integrated, and stationary modes of the center-of-mass oscillation of the condensate with respect to the vortex ring movement. We show that the oscillation amplitude {of the center-of-mass of the condensate} depends strongly on the initial radius of the vortex ring, the inter-atomic interaction, and the aspect ration of the trap, while the oscillation frequency is fixed and equal to the frequency of the harmonic trap in the direction of the ring movement…
The ring dark solitons in spin-1 $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensates are studied numerically in the framework of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equations. By simulating the phase engineering technique in real experiments, we explore the roles of the parameters characterizing the far-off resonant laser pulse which can be used to generate the ring dark solitons. The variations of these parameters have dramatic effect on the lifetime and the decay profiles of the ring dark solitons. If only one ring dark soliton is generated in one component of the condensate, ring dark soliton…
We consider a Bose-Einstein condensed cloud of atoms which rotate in a toroidal/annular potential. Assuming one-dimensional motion, we evaluate the critical frequencies associated with the effect of hysteresis and the critical coupling for stability of the persistent currents. We perform these calculations using both the mean-field approximation and the method of numerical diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian which includes corrections due to the finiteness of the atom number.
