The software package BoSSS serves the discretization of (steady-state or time-dependent) partial differential equations with discontinuous coefficients and/or time-dependent domains by means of an eXtended Discontinuous Galerkin (XDG, resp. DG) method, aka. cut-cell DG, aka. unfitted DG. This work consists of two major parts: First, the XDG method is introduced and a formal notation is developed, which captures important numerical details such as cell-agglomeration and a multigrid framework. In the second part, iterative solvers for extended DG systems are presented and their performance is evaluated.
We introduce a homogeneous multigrid method in the sense that it uses the same embedded discontinuous Galerkin (EDG) discretization scheme for Poisson's equation on all levels. In particular, we use the injection operator developed in [LuRK2020] for HDG and prove optimal convergence of the method under the assumption of elliptic regularity. Numerical experiments underline our analytical findings.
We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.

A comparative study of efficient multigrid solvers for high-order local discontinuous Galerkin methods: Poisson, elliptic interface, and multiphase Stokes problems
We present a parallel computing strategy for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) nested geometric multigrid (GMG) solver. Parallel GMG solvers require a combination of coarse-grain and fine-grain parallelism to improve time to solution performance. In this work we focus on fine-grain parallelism. We use Intel's second generation Xeon Phi (Knights Landing) many-core processor. The GMG method achieves ideal convergence rates of $0.2$ or less, for high polynomial orders. A matrix free (assembly free) technique is exploited to save considerable memory usage and increase arithmetic intensit…

Efficient and suitably preconditioned iterative solvers for elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) of the convection-diffusion type are used in all fields of science and engineering. To achieve optimal performance, solvers have to exhibit high arithmetic intensity and need to exploit every form of parallelism available in modern manycore CPUs. The computationally most expensive components of the solver are the repeated applications of the linear operator and the preconditioner. For discretisations based on higher-order Discontinuous Galerkin methods, sum-factorisation results in a dram…
The present work develops hybrid multigrid methods for high-order discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of elliptic problems. Fast matrix-free operator evaluation on tensor product elements is used to devise a computationally efficient PDE solver. The multigrid hierarchy exploits all possibilities of geometric, polynomial, and algebraic coarsening, targeting engineering applications on complex geometries. Additionally, a transfer from discontinuous to continuous function spaces is performed within the multigrid hierarchy. This does not only further reduce the problem size of the coarse-grid p…
We propose a multigrid method to solve the linear system of equations arising from a hybrid discontinuous Galerkin (in particular, a single face hybridizable, a hybrid Raviart--Thomas, or a hybrid Brezzi--Douglas--Marini) discretization of a Stokes problem. Our analysis is centered around the augmented Lagrangian approach and we prove uniform convergence in this setting. Numerical experiments underline our analytical findings.

In this work we introduce a dG framework for nonlinear elasticity based on a Bassi-Rebay (BR2) formulation. The framework encompasses compressible and incompressible hyperelastic materials and is capable of dealing with large deformations. In order to achieve stability, we combine higher-order lifting operators for the BR2 stabilization term with an adaptive stabilization strategy which relies on the BR2 Laplace operator stabilization and a penalty parameter based on the spectrum of the fourth-order elasticity tensor. Dirichlet boundary conditions for the displacement can be imposed by means o…
We consider two parallel-in-time approaches applied to a (reaction) diffusion problem, possibly non-linear. In particular, we consider PFASST (Parallel Full Approximation Scheme in Space and Time) and space-time multilevel strategies. For both approaches, we start from an integral formulation of the continuous time-dependent problem. Then, a collocation form for PFASST and a discontinuous Galerkin discretization in time for the space-time multigrid are employed, resulting in the same discrete solution at the time nodes. Strong and weak scaling of both multilevel strategies is compared for vary…
Two-grid methods with exact solution of the Galerkin coarse-grid system have been well studied by the multigrid community: an elegant identity has been established to characterize the convergence factor of exact two-grid methods. In practice, however, it is often too costly to solve the Galerkin coarse-grid system exactly, especially when its size is large. Instead, without essential loss of convergence speed, one may solve the coarse-grid system approximately. In this paper, we develop a new framework for analyzing the convergence of inexact two-grid methods: two-sided bounds for the energy n…
In this article, we discuss the efficient implementation of powerful domain decomposition smoothers for multigrid methods for high order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element methods. In particular, we study the inversion of matrices associated to mesh cells and to the patches around a vertex, respectively, in order to obtain fast local solvers for additive and multiplicative subspace correction methods. The effort of inverting local matrices for tensor product polynomials of degree $k$ is reduced from $\mathcal O(k^{3d})$ to $\mathcal O(dk^{d+1})$ by exploiting the separability of the di…
In this paper we present a Local Fourier Analysis of a space-time multigrid solver for a hyperbolic test problem. The space-time discretization is based on arbitrarily high order discontinuous Galerkin spectral element methods in time and a first order finite volume method in space. We apply a block Jacobi smoother and consider coarsening in space-time, as well as temporal coarsening only. Asymptotic convergence factors for the smoother and the two-grid method for both coarsening strategies are presented. For high CFL numbers, the convergence factors for both strategies are $0.5$ for first ord…
Numerical climate- and weather-prediction requires the fast solution of the equations of fluid dynamics. Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretisations have several advantageous properties. They can be used for arbitrary domains and support a structured data layout, which is important on modern chip architectures. For smooth solutions, higher order approximations can be particularly efficient since errors decrease exponentially in the polynomial degree. Due to the wide separation of timescales in atmospheric dynamics, semi-implicit time integrators are highly efficient, since the implicit treatme…

We provide an overview of the high-order spatial discretisation (including energy/entropy stable schemes) and anisotropic p-adaptation capabilities. The solver is parallelised using MPI and OpenMP showing good scalability for u…
In this paper, we design preconditioners for the matrix-free solution of high-order continuous and discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of elliptic problems based on FEM-SEM equivalence and additive Schwarz methods. The high-order operators are applied without forming the system matrix, making use of sum factorization for efficient evaluation. The system is preconditioned using a spectrally equivalent low-order ($p=1$) finite element operator discretization on a refined mesh. The low-order refined mesh is anisotropic and not shape regular in the polynomial degree of the high-order operator, …

This work proposes a basis for improved throughput of matrix-free evaluation of discontinuous Galerkin symmetric interior penalty discretizations on hexahedral elements. The basis relies on ideas of Hermite polynomials. It is used in a fully discontinuous setting not for higher order continuity but to minimize the effective stencil width, namely to limit the neighbor access of an element to one data point for the function value and one for the derivative. The basis is extended to higher orders with nodal contributions derived from roots of Jacobi polynomials and extended to multiple dimensions…
We present an optimal preconditioner for the exactly divergence-free discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of Cockburn, Kanschat, and Schötzau [J. Sci. Comput., 31 (2007), pp. 61--73] and Wang and Ye [SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 45 (2007), pp. 1269--1286] for the Stokes problem. This DG method uses finite elements that use an $H({\rm div})$-conforming basis, thereby significantly complicating its solution by iterative methods. Several preconditioners for this Stokes discretization have been developed, but each is based on specialized solvers or decompositions, and do not offer a clear framework…
Isogeometric Analysis is a spline-based discretization method to partial differential equations which shows the approximation power of a high-order method. The number of degrees of freedom, however, is as small as the number of degrees of freedom of a low-order method. This does not come for free as the original formulation of Isogeometric Analysis requires a global geometry function. Since this is too restrictive for many kinds of applications, the domain is usually decomposed into patches, where each patch is parameterized with its own geometry function. In simpler cases, the patches can be …
A considerable amount of attention has been given to discontinuous Galerkin methods for hyperbolic problems in numerical relativity, showing potential advantages of the methods in dealing with hydrodynamical shocks and other discontinuities. This paper investigates discontinuous Galerkin methods for the solution of elliptic problems in numerical relativity. We present a novel hp-adaptive numerical scheme for curvilinear and non-conforming meshes. It uses a multigrid preconditioner with a Chebyshev or Schwarz smoother to create a very scalable discontinuous Galerkin code on generic domains. The…
