In quantum physics, two prototypical model systems stand out due to their wide range of applications. These are the two-level system (TLS) and the harmonic oscillator. The former is often an ideal model for confined charge or spin systems and the latter for lattice vibrations, i.e., phonons. Here, we couple these two systems, which leads to numerous fascinating physical phenomena. Practically, we consider different optical excitations and decay scenarios of a TLS, focusing on the generated dynamics of a single phonon mode that couples to the TLS. Special emphasis is placed on the entropy of the different parts of the system, predominantly the phonons. While, without any decay, the entire system is always in a pure state, resulting in a vanishing entropy, the complex interplay between the single parts results in non-vanishing respective entanglement entropies and non-trivial dynamics of them. Taking a decay of the TLS into account leads to a non-vanishing entropy of the full system and additional aspects in its dynamics. We demonstrate that all aspects of the entropy's behavior can be traced back to the purity of the states and are illustrated by phonon Wigner functions in phase space.
We investigate polariton-phonon hybrid excitations, which describe the collective excitations of emitter-photon polaritons and vibrational phonons, in a periodic array of vibrating two-level emitters interacting with waveguide photons. We demonstrate the emergence of an interaction-induced quasiperiodic structure caused by the interplay between phonon scatterings and waveguide-mediated long-range couplings. This quasiperiodicity fundamentally changes the excitation characteristics in the subradiant regime, which feature an appearance of topological edge states and a transition between ergodic …
The study of the fundamental properties of phonons is crucial to understand their role in applica- tions in quantum information science, where the active use of phonons is currently highly debated. A genuine quantum phenomenon associated with the fluctuation properties of phonons is squeezing, which is achieved when the fluctuations of a certain variable drop below their respective vacuum value. We consider a semiconductor quantum dot in which the exciton is coupled to phonons. We review the fluctuation properties of the phonons, which are generated by optical manipulation of the quantum dot, …
We present a detailed study of a phonon-assisted incoherent excitation mechanism of single quantum dots. A spectrally-detuned laser couples to a quantum dot transition by mediation of acoustic phonons, whereby excitation efficiencies up to 20 % with respect to strictly resonant excitation can be achieved at T = 9 K. Laser frequency-dependent analysis of the quantum dot intensity distinctly maps the underlying acoustic phonon bath and shows good agreement with our polaron master equation theory. An analytical solution for the photoluminescence is introduced which predicts a broadband incoherent…
The confinement of high frequency phonons approaching 1 GHz is demonstrated in phonon-trapping acoustic cavities at cryogenic temperatures using a low-coupled network approach. The frequency range is extended by nearly an order of magnitude, with excitation at greater than the 200$^{\text{th}}$ overtone achieved for the first time. Such high frequency operation reveals Rayleigh-type phonon scattering losses due to highly diluted lattice impurities and corresponding glass-like behaviour, with a maximum $Q_L\times f$ product of $8.6\times 10^{17}$ at 3.8K and $4\times10^{17}$ at 15mK. This sugge…
The energy transport of acoustic phonons generated by the optical excitation of a quantum dot as well as the coherence properties of these phonons are studied theoretically both for the case of a pulsed excitation and for a continuous wave (cw) excitation switched on instantaneously. For a pulsed excitation, depending on pulse area and pulse duration, a finite number of phonon wave packets is emitted, while for the case of a cw excitation a sequence of wave packets with decreasing amplitude is generated after the excitation has been switched on. We show that the energy flow associated with the…
Phonon excitations of fractional quantum Hall states at filling factors nu = 1/3, 2/5, 4/7, 3/5, 4/3, and 5/3 are experimentally shown to be based on Landau level transitions of Composite Fermions. At filling factor nu = 2/3, however, a linear field dependence of the excitation energy in the high-field regime rather hints towards a spin transition excited by the phonons. We propose to explain this surprising observation by an only partially polarized 2/3-ground-state making the energetically lower lying spin transition also allowed for phonon excitations.
We study theoretically the fluctuation properties of acoustic phonons created in a semiconductor quantum dot after ultrafast optical excitation. An excitation with a single ultrafast pulse creates an exciton confined to the quantum dot, which is coupled to longitudinal acoustic phonons. This leads to the formation of a polaron in the quantum dot accompanied by the emission of a phonon wave packet. We show that the fluctuations of the lattice displacement associated with the wave packet after a single laser pulse excitation in resonance with the exciton transition are always larger than their r…
We calculate the phonons in a graphene nanoconstriction(GNC) in the presence of a high current density. The Joule-heating, current-induced forces, and coupling to electrode phonons is evaluated using first principles nonequilibrium DFT-NEGF calculations. Close to a resonance in the electronic structure we observe a strongly nonlinear heating with bias and breakdown of the harmonic approximation. This behavior results from negatively damped phonons driven by the current. The effect may limit the stability and capacity of graphene nanoconstrictions to carry high currents.
We derive a quantum-kinetic description of phonon-assisted F{ö}rster transfer between two coupled quantum dots (a quantum dot molecule). We show that the exciton state decays to the ground state of the QDM via a combination of the Rabi rotation and exponential decay. For moderately spaced dots this process takes place on a picosecond time scale.
Here we report a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) study in the superconducting state of 2H-NbS2. We directly visualize the existence of incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) that is pinned by atomic impurities. In strong tunneling conditions, the incommensurate CDW is de-pinned from impurities by the electric field from STM tip. We perform STM-based inelastic tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) to detect phonon excitations in 2H-NbS2 and measure the influence of atomic impurities on local phonon excitations. In comparison with the calculated vibrational density of states…
Excitation of a semiconductor quantum dot with a chirped laser pulse allows excitons to be created by rapid adiabatic passage. In quantum dots this process can be greatly hindered by the coupling to phonons. Here we add a high chirp rate to ultra-short laser pulses and use these pulses to excite a single quantum dot. We demonstrate that we enter a regime where the exciton-phonon coupling is effective for small pulse areas, while for higher pulse areas a decoupling of the exciton from the phonons occurs. We thus discover a reappearance of rapid adiabatic passage, in analogy to the predicted rea…
Plasmon and coupled plasmon-phonon modes in graphene are investigated the-oretically within the diagrammatic self-consistent field theory. It shows that two plasmon modes and four coupled plasmon-phonon modes can be excited via intra-and inter-band transition channels. It is found that with increasing q and carrier density, the plasmon modes couple strongly with the optic-phonon modes in graphene. The coupled plasmon-phonon modes exhibit some interesting features which can be utilized to realize the plasmonic devices. Our results suggest that the carrier-phonon interaction should be considered…
We have observed large-amplitude coherent phonon oscillations of radial breathing modes (RBMs) in single-walled carbon nanotubes excited through the lowest-energy (E11) interband transitions. In contrast to the previously-studied coherent phonons excited through higher-energy (E22) transitions, these RBMs show comparable intensities between (n-m) mod 3 = 1 and -1 nanotubes. We also find novel non-resonantly excited RBMs over an excitation range of ~300 meV above the E11 transition, which we attribute to multi-phonon replicas arising from strong exciton-phonon coupling.
Magneto-Raman scattering experiments from the surface of graphite reveal novel features associated to purely electronic excitations which are observed in addition to phonon-mediated resonances. Graphene-like and graphite domains are identified through experiments with $\sim 1μm$ spatial resolution performed in magnetic fields up to 32T. Polarization resolved measurements emphasize the characteristic selection rules for electronic transitions in graphene. Graphene on graphite displays the unexpected hybridization between optical phonon and symmetric across the Dirac point inter Landau level tra…
Color centers in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) show stable single photon emission even at room temperature, making these systems a promising candidate for quantum information applications. Besides this remarkable property, also their interaction with longitudinal optical (LO) phonons is quite unique because they lead to dominant phonon sidebands (PSBs), well separated from the zero phonon line (ZPL). In this work we utilize this clear spectral separation to theoretically investigate the influence of phonon decay dynamics on time-dependent photoluminescence (PL) signals. Our simulations show, t…
We use polarized magneto-Raman scattering to study purely electronic excitations and the electron-phonon coupling in bulk graphite. At a temperature of 4.2 K and in magnetic fields up to 28 T we observe $K$-point electronic excitations involving Landau bands with $Δ|n|=0$ and with $Δ|n|=\pm2$ that can be selected by controlling the angular momentum of the excitation laser and of the scattered light. The magneto-phonon effect involving the $E_{2g}$ optical phonon and $K$-point inter Landau bands electronic excitations with $Δ|n|=\pm1$ is revealed and analyzed within a model taking into account …
For many applications of semiconductor quantum dots in quantum technology a well controlled state preparation of the quantum dot states is mandatory. Since quantum dots are embedded in the semiconductor matrix, the interaction with phonons plays often a major role in the preparation process. In this review, we discuss the influence of phonons on three basically different optical excitation schemes which can be used for the preparation of exciton, biexciton, and superposition states: a resonant excitation leading to Rabi rotations in the excitonic system, an excitation with chirped pulses explo…
We study the topological property of the magnetoelastic excitation in non-collinear antiferromagnets. As a toy model, we consider the magnon-phonon coupling in a triangular antiferromagnet with a $120^\circ$ Nèel order. We find that in the presence of out-of-plane external magnetic field, the magnon-polaron bands, which arise from hybridization of magnons and phonons, can carry Chern number, even though the individual magnon and phonon bands are topologically trivial. Large Berry curvature is induced from the anti-crossing regions between the magnon and phonon bands, which renormalizes the the…
We theoretically investigate magnon-phonon hybrid excitations in two-dimensional ferromagnets. The bulk bands of hybrid excitations, which are referred to as magnon-polarons, are analytically shown to be topologically nontrivial, possessing finite Chern numbers. We also show that the Chern numbers of magnon-polaron bands and the number of band-crossing lines can be manipulated by an external magnetic field. For experiments, we propose to use the thermal Hall conductivity as a probe of the finite Berry curvatures of magnon-polarons. Our results show that a simple ferromagnet on a square lattice…
We analyze generation of phonons in tunneling structures with two electron states coupled by electron-phonon interaction. The conditions of strong vibration excitations are determined and dependence of non-equilibrium phonon occupation numbers on the applied bias is found. For high vibration excitation levels self consistent theory for the tunneling transport is presented.
Using pre-designed trains of femtosecond optical pulses, we have selectively excited coherent phonons of the radial breathing mode of specific-chirality single-walled carbon nanotubes within an ensemble sample. By analyzing the initial phase of the phonon oscillations, we prove that the tube diameter initially increases in response to ultrafast photoexcitation. Furthermore, from excitation profiles, we demonstrate that an excitonic absorption peak of carbon nanotubes periodically oscillates as a function of time when the tube diameter undergoes radial breathing mode oscillations.
The existence of an acoustic plasmon in extrinsic (doped or gated) monolayer graphene was found recently in an {\it ab initio} calculation with the frozen lattice [M. Pisarra {\it et al.}, arXiv:1306.6273, 2013]. By the {\em fully dynamic} density-functional perturbation theory approach, we demonstrate a strong coupling of the acoustic plasmonic mode to lattice vibrations. Thereby, the acoustic plasmon in graphene does not exist as an isolated excitation, but it is rather bound into a combined plasmon-phonon mode. We show that the coupling provides a mechanism for the {\em bidirectional} energ…
We report a comprehensive study of the tuning with electric fields of the resonant magneto-exciton optical phonon coupling in gated graphene. For magnetic fields around $B \sim 25$ T which correspond to the range of the fundamental magneto-phonon resonance, the electron-phonon coupling can be switched on and off by tuning the position of the Fermi level in order to Pauli block the two fundamental inter Landau level excitations. The effects of such a profound change in the electronic excitation spectrum are traced through investigations of the optical phonon response in polarization resolved ma…
The theoretical assertion that the Fano asymmetry parameter and the asymptotic initial phase of a harmonic oscillator interacting with a continuum are interrelated is experimentally verified. By an example of coherent fully symmetric A1g phonons in bismuth that are excited by ultrashort laser pulses at liquid helium temperature, it is demonstrated that, for negative values of the asymmetry parameter, the asymptotic phase increases as the modulus of the parameter decreases.
Excitation of four coherent phonon modes of different symmetries has been realized in copper metaborate CuB$_2$O$_4$ via impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS). Phonons were detected by monitoring changes in the linear optical birefringence using the balanced-detection (BD) technique. We compare the results of BD-ISRS experiment to the polarized spontaneous Raman scattering spectra. We show that the agreement between the two sets of data obtained by these allied techniques in a wide phonon frequencies range of 4-14 THz can be achieved by rigorously taking into account the symmetry of the…
We show how the magneto-phonon resonance, particularly pronounced in sp2 carbon allotropes, can be used as a tool to probe the band structure of multilayer graphene specimens. Even when electronic excitations cannot be directly observed, their coupling to the E2g phonon leads to pronounced oscillations of the phonon feature observed through Raman scattering experiments with multiple periods and amplitudes detemined by the electronic excitation spectrum. Such experiment and analysis have been performed up to 28T on an exfoliated 4-layer graphene specimen deposited on SiO2, and the observed osci…
We discuss the role of electron-electron and electron-phonon correlations in current flow in the Coulomb Blockade regime, focusing specifically on nontrivial signatures arising from the break-down of mean-field theory. By solving transport equations directly in Fock space, we show that electron-electron interactions manifest as gateable excitations experimentally observed in the current-voltage characteristic. While these excitations might merge into an incoherent sum that allows occasional simplifications, a clear separation of excitations into slow `traps' and fast `channels' can lead to fur…
We demonstrate how to build a vibrating wire resonator for phonon excitation in liquid helium. The resonator is designed as a nanoscopic mechanically flexible beam machined out of a semiconductor/metal-hybrid. Quenching of the mechanical resonance around 100 MHz by phonon excitation in liquid ^4He at 4.2 K is shown. First measurements operating the nano-resonator in a dilution of ^3He/^4He at 30 mK are presented.
We analyse the influence of optically generated non-equilibrium phonons on the spin relaxation and effective spin temperature of an individual Cr atom inserted in a quantum dot. Using a three pulses pump-probe technique, we show that the spin relaxation measured in resonant optical pumping experiments strongly depends on the optical excitation conditions. We observe for an isolated Cr in the dark a heating time shorter than a few hundreds $ns$ after an initial high power non-resonant excitation pulse. A cooling time larger than a few tens of $μs$, independent on the excitation, is obtained in …
This paper builds on the recent demonstration of three-wave mixing based phononic frequency comb. Here, in this process, an intrinsic coupling between the drive and resonant frequency leads to a frequency comb of spacing corresponding to the separation between drive and resonant frequency. Now, in this paper, we experimentally demonstrate the possibility to further excite multiple frequency combs with the same external drive through its coupling with other identical devices. In addition, we also experimentally identify interesting features associated with such a frequency comb generation proce…
Precise infrared magnetotransmission experiments have been performed in magnetic fields up to 32 T on a series of multilayer epitaxial graphene samples. We observe changes in the spectral features and broadening of the main cyclotron transition when the incoming photon energy is in resonance with the lowest Landau level separation and the energy of a K point optical phonon. We have developed a theory that explains and quantitatively reproduces the frequency and magnetic field dependence of the phenomenon as the absorption of a photon together with the simultaneous creation of an intervalley, i…
