The theoretical assertion that the Fano asymmetry parameter and the asymptotic initial phase of a harmonic oscillator interacting with a continuum are interrelated is experimentally verified. By an example of coherent fully symmetric A1g phonons in bismuth that are excited by ultrashort laser pulses at liquid helium temperature, it is demonstrated that, for negative values of the asymmetry parameter, the asymptotic phase increases as the modulus of the parameter decreases.
An analytical derivation of Fano line-shape asymmetry ratio has been presented here for a general case. It is shown that Fano line-shape becomes less asymmetric as \q is increased and finally becomes completely symmetric in the limiting condition of q equal to infinity. Asymmetry ratios of Fano line-shapes have been calculated and are found to be in good consonance with the reported expressions for asymmetry ratio as a function of Fano parameter. Application of this derivation is also mentioned for explanation of asymmetry to symmetry transition of Fano line-shape in quantum confined silicon n…
We investigate the Fano interference in the presence of a "which way" detector, i.e., a local electron-phonon coupler, in the context of mesoscopic transport. Special attention is paid to study whether the phonon sidebands in the differential conductance spectra exhibit the typical lineshape of the Fano interference. When using a double-dot model we obtain two seemly contradictory results by slightly different approaches: The Markovian approach leads to {\it absolutely no} Fano interference at the phonon sidebands, while the Non-Markovian approach results in {\it finite} Fano interference at t…
Interference between different possible paths lies at the heart of quantum physics. Such interference between coupled discrete and continuum states of a system can profoundly change its interaction with light as seen in Fano resonance. Here we present a unique many-body Fano system composed of a discrete phonon vibration and continuous electron-hole pair transitions in bilayer graphene. Mediated by the electron-phonon interactions, the excited state is described by new quanta of elementary excitations of hybrid phonon-exciton nature. Infrared absorption of the hybrid states exhibit characteris…
The in-plane optical phonons around 200 meV in few-layer graphene are investigated utilizing infrared absorption spectroscopy. The phonon spectra exhibit unusual asymmetric features characteristic of Fano resonances, which depend critically on the layer thickness and stacking order of the sample. The phonon intensities in samples with rhombohedral (ABC) stacking are significantly higher than those with Bernal (AB) stacking. These observations reflect the strong coupling between phonons and interband electronic transitions in these systems and the distinctive variation in the joint density of e…
We theoretically study the resonant tunneling and Fano resonance in quantum dots with electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction. We examine the bias-voltage ($V$) dependence of the decoherence, using Keldysh Green function method and perturbation with respect to the e-ph interaction. With optical phonons of energy $ω_0$, only the elastic process takes place when $eV<ω_0$, in which electrons emit and absorb phonons virtually. The process suppresses the resonant amplitude. When $eV>ω_0$, the inelastic process is possible which is accompanied by real emission of phonons. It results in the dephasing and …
We measure and analyze reflection spectra of directly coupled systems of waveguides and cavities. The observed Fano lines offer insight in the reflection and coupling processes. Very different from side-coupled systems, the observed Fano line shape is not caused by the termini of the waveguide, but the coupling process between the measurement device fiber and the waveguide. Our experimental results and analytical model show that the Fano parameter that describes the Fano line shape is very sensitive to the coupling condition. A movement of the fiber well below the Rayleigh range can lead to a …
We study influence of the phonon modes on a subgap spectrum and Andreev conductance for the double quantum dot vertically coupled between a metallic and superconducting lead. For the monochromatic phonon reservoir we obtain replicas of the interferometric Fano-type structures appearing simultaneously in the particle and hole channels. We furthermore confront the induced on-dot pairing with the electron correlations and investigate how the phonon modes affect the zero-bias signature of the Kondo effect in Andreev conductance.
A Fano-like phonon resonance is observed in few-layer (~3) graphene at room temperature using infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. This Fano resonance is the manifestation of a strong electron-phonon interaction between the discrete in-plane lattice vibrational mode and continuum electronic excitations in graphene. By employing ammonia chemical doping, we have obtained different Fano line shapes ranging from anti-resonance in hole-doped graphene to phonon-dominated in n-type graphene. The Fano resonance shows the strongest interference feature when the Fermi level is located near the Dirac…
We report a photoluminescence observation of robust excitonic polarons due to strong coupling of exciton and longitudinal optical (LO) phonon as well as Fano-type interference in high quality ZnO crystal. At low enough temperatures, the strong coupling of excitons and LO phonons leads to not only traditional Stokes lines (SLs) but also up to second-order anti-Stokes lines (ASLs) besides the zero-phonon line (ZPL). The SLs and ASLs are found to be not mirror symmetric with respect to the ZPL, strongly suggesting that they are from different coupling states of exciton and phonons. It is more int…
Since their discovery, graphene-based systems represent an exceptional playground to explore the emergence of peculiar quantum effects. The present paper focuses on the anomalous appearence of strong infrared phonon resonances in the optical spectroscopy of bilayer graphene and on their pronounced Fano-like asymmetry, both tunable in gated devices. By developing a full microscopic many-body approach for the optical phonon response we explain how both effects can be quantitatively accounted for by the quantum interference of electronic and phononic excitations. We show that the phonon modes bor…
We introduce a new type of Fano resonances, realized in a photonic circuit which consists of two nonlinear PT-symmetric micro-resonators side-coupled to a waveguide, which have line-shape and resonance position that depends on the direction of the incident light. We utilize these features in order to induce asymmetric transport up to 47 dBs in the optical C-window. Our set-up requires low input power and does not compromise the power and frequency characteristics of the output signal.
Theoretical Raman line shape functions have been studied to take care of quantum confinement effect and Fano effect individually and jointly. The characteristics of various Raman line shapes have been studied in terms of the broadening and asymmetry of Raman line shapes. It is shown that the asymmetry in the Raman line-shape function caused by these two effects individually does not add linearly to give asymmetry of line-shape generated by considering the combined effect. This indicates existence of interplay between the two effects. The origin of interplay lies in the fact that Fano effect it…
We studied magneto-optical response of a canonical topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ with the goal of addressing a controversial issue of electron-phonon coupling. Magnetic-field induced modifications of reflectance are very pronounced in the infrared part of the spectrum, indicating strong electron-phonon coupling. This coupling causes an asymmetric line-shape of the 60 cm$^{-1}$ phonon mode, and is analyzed within the Fano formalism. The analysis reveals that the Fano asymmetry parameter (q) changes sign when the cyclotron resonance is degenerate with the phonon mode. To the best of our kno…
This work revisits the physics giving rise to the carbon nanotubes phonon bands in the mid- infrared. Our measurements of doped and undoped samples of single-walled carbon nanotubes in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy show that the phonon bands exhibit an asymmetric lineshape and that their effective cross-section is enhanced upon doping. We relate these observations to electron-phonon coupling or, more specifically, to a Fano resonance phenomenon. We note that only the dopant-induced intraband continuum couples to the phonon modes and that defects induced in the sidewall increase the r…
We report measurements of the bias dependence of the Fano factor in ensembles of atomic-scale Au junctions at 77 K. Previous measurements of shot noise at room temperature and low biases have found good agreement of the Fano factor with the expectations of the Landauer- Büttiker formalism, while enhanced Fano factors have been observed at biases of hundreds of mV [R. Chen et al., Sci. Rep. 4, 4221 (2014)]. We find even stronger enhancement of shot noise at 77 K with an "excess" Fano factor up to ten times the low bias value. We discuss the observed ensemble Fano factor bias dependence in terms…
Excitation of electron-hole pairs in the vicinity of the Dirac cone by the Coulomb interaction gives rise to an asymmetric Breit-Wigner-Fano lineshape in the phonon Raman spectra in graphene. This asymmetric lineshape appears due to the interference effect between the phonon spectra and the electron-hole pair excitation spectra. The calculated Breit-Wigner-Fano asymmetric factor 1/qBWF as a function of the Fermi energy shows a V-shaped curve with a minimum value at the charge neutrality point and gives good agreement with the experimental result.
Detection of local strain at the nanometer scale with high sensitivity remains challenging. Here we report near-field infrared nano-imaging of local strains in bilayer graphene through probing strain-induced shifts of phonon frequency. As a non-polar crystal, intrinsic bilayer graphene possesses little infrared response at its transverse optical (TO) phonon frequency. The reported optical detection of local strain is enabled by applying a vertical electrical field that breaks the symmetry of the two graphene layers and introduces finite electrical dipole moment to graphene phonon. The activate…
We show the existence of Fano resonances in the context of near-field radiative heat transfer, which enable the strong suppression and enhancement of the spectral heat flux at specific wavelengths. This is demonstrated by making use of the plasmon-phonon coupling in a symmetric nano cavity composed by a polaritonic material coated with a metallic layer, in which each side of the cavity is kept at different temperatures. The strong hybridization of the plasmonic and phononic modes sustained by the multilayer structure is determined by the matching of their polarization. This leads to the openin…
We describe the Fano asymmetry by expanding the transmission amplitude with respect to states with point spectra (discrete eigenstates), including not only bound states but also resonant states with complex eigenvalues. We first introduce a novel complete set that spans the Hilbert space of the central part of an open quantum-dot system. This complete set contains all states of point spectra, but does not contain any states of continuous spectra. We thereby analytically expand the conductance of the dot in terms of all discrete states without any background integrals. This expansion implies th…
Weyl semimetals are 3D phases of matter with topologically protected states that have remarkable macroscopic transport behaviors. As phonon dynamics and electron-phonon scattering play a critical role in the electrical and thermal transport, we pursue a fundamental understanding of the origin of these effects in type-I Weyl semimetals NbAs and TaAs. In the temperature-dependent Raman spectra of NbAs, we reveal a previously unreported Fano lineshape, a signature stemming from the electron-phonon interaction. Additionally, the temperature dependence of the $A_{1}$ phonon linewidths in both NbAs …
We report an experimental study of temperature-dependent spectral lineshapes of phonon side-band emission stemming from dark excitons in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_{2}$. Using photoluminescence spectroscopy in the range from 4 to 100K, we observe a pronounced asymmetry in the phonon-assisted luminescence from momentum-indirect exciton reservoirs. We demonstrate that the corresponding spectral profiles are distinct from those of bright excitons with direct radiative decay pathways. The lineshape asymmetry reflects thermal distribution of exciton states with finite center-of-mass momenta, charac…
We report strong electron-phonon coupling in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MA-TBG) obtained from atomistic description of the system including more than 10000 atoms in the moire supercell. Electronic structure, phonon spectrum, and electron-phonon coupling strength lambda are obtained before and after atomic-position relaxation both in and out of plane. Obtained lambda is very large for MA-TBG, with lambda > 1 near the half-filling energies of the flat bands, while it is small (lambda ~ 0.1) for monolayer and unrotated bilayer graphene. Significant electron-hole asymmetry occurs in the…
We explain the Fano peak (an asymmetric resonance peak) as an interference effect involving resonant states. We reveal that there are three types of Fano asymmetry according to their origins: the interference between a resonant state and an anti-resonant state, that between a resonant state and a bound state, and that between two resonant states. We show that the last two show the asymmetric energy dependence given by Fano, but the first one shows a slightly different form. In order to show the above, we analytically and microscopically derive a formula where we express the conductance purely …
Using in-situ Raman scattering from phosphorene channel in an electrochemically top-gated field effect transistor, we show that its phonons with A$_g$ symmetry depend much more strongly on concentration of electrons than that of holes, while the phonons with B$_g$ symmetry are insensitive to doping. With first-principles theoretical analysis, we show that the observed electon-hole asymmetry arises from the radically different constitution of its conduction and valence bands involving $π$ and $σ$ bonding states respectively, whose symmetry permits coupling with only the phonons that preserve th…
The Fano resonance of a single symmetry broken Ag nanodisk under a normal incidence was investigated by using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. The asymmetry line shape of the Fano resonance was controlled by modifying the open angle of the nanodisk, and this Fano splitting was demonstrated as the result of the overlap between the broad dipolar and narrow quadrupolar modes, which could be strengthened by enlarging the radius of the nanodisk. A semi-analytical method was developed to calculate the plasmon hybridization, which was used to analyze the sub-process of the quadru Fan…
We report the temperature dependence of the zero-bias conductance of a single-electron transistor in the regime of weak coupling between the quantum dot and the leads. The Fano line shape, convoluted with thermal broadening, provides a good fit to the observed asymmetric Coulomb charging peaks. However, the width of the peaks increases more rapidly than expected from the thermal broadening of the Fermi distribution in a temperature range for which Fano interference is unaffected. The intrinsic width of the resonance extracted from the fits increases approximately quadratically with temperature…
We study the influence of inelastic processes on shot noise and the Fano factor for a one-dimensional double-barrier structure, where resonant tunneling takes place between two terminals. Most studies to date have found, by means of various approximate or phenomenological methods, that shot noise is insensitive to dephasing caused by inelastic scattering. In this paper, we explore the status of this statement by deriving a general Landaur-Büttiker-type formula that expresses the current noise and Fano factor in a one-dimensional conductor through inelastic scattering amplitudes. For a double-b…
The transmission probability and phase through a few-electron quantum dot are studied within a resonance theory for the strong coupling regime to the conducting leads. We find that the interaction between overlapping resonances leads to their separation in the complex energy plane and to the decoherent dephasing of the resonant modes. The appearance of the Fano effect is conditioned not only by the induced dephasing generally associated with a phase lapse, but also by a favorable parity of the resonant modes. To identify the contribution of each resonance to the transmission, we propose, in th…
We present theoretical study of ferromagnetic resonance in a system of two coupled magnetic layers. We show that an interaction between the layers leads to the occurrence of the so-called Fano resonance. The Fano resonance changes the shape of the ferromagnetic resonance peak. It introduces a peak asymmetry. The asymmetry type is defined by the sign of the interaction between the magnetic layers. Therefore, studying the shape of the ferromagnetic resonance peaks one can define the type of the interlayer coupling (ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic). We show that using numerical simulations one…
We calculate the conductance through strongly correlated T-shaped molecular or quantum dot systems under the influence of phonons. The system is modelled by the extended Anderson-Holstein Hamiltonian. The finite-U mean-field slave boson approach is used to study many-body effects. Phonons influence both interference and correlations. Depending on the dot unperturbed energy and the strength of electron-phonon interaction the system is occupied by a different number of electrons which effectively interact with each other repulsively or attractively. This leads together with the interference effe…
We present a microscopic model describing the transition to strong coupling regime for an emitter resonantly coupled to a surface plasmon in a metal-dielectric structure. We demonstrate that the shape of scattering spectra is determined by an interplay of two distinct mechanisms. First is the near-field coupling between the emitter and the plasmon mode which underpins energy exchange between the system components and gives rise to exciton-induced transparency minimum in scattering spectra prior the transition to strong coupling regime. The second mechanism is Fano interference between the plas…
We explore the ultrafast reflectivity response from photo-generated coupled phonon-surface Dirac plasmons in Sb$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulators several quintuple layers thick. The transient coherent phonon spectra obtained at different time frames exhibit a Fano-like asymmetric line shape of the $A^2_{1g}$ mode, which is attributed to quantum interference between continuum-like coherent Dirac-plasmons and phonons. By analyzing the time-dependent asymmetric line shape using the two-temperature model (TTM), it was determined that a Fano-like resonance persisted up to $\approx$1 ps after photo-e…
We report on a >100-fold enhancement of Raman responses from Bi2Se3 thin films if laser photon energy switches from 2.33 eV (532 nm) to 1.58 eV (785 nm), which is due to direct optical coupling to Dirac surface states (SS) at the resonance energy of ~1.5 eV (a thickness-independent enhancement) and due to nonlinearly excited Dirac plasmon (a thickness-dependent enhancement). Owing to the direct optical coupling, we observed an in-plane phonon mode of hexagonally arranged Se-atoms associated with a continuous network of Dirac SS. This mode revealed a Fano lineshape for films <15 nm thick, resul…
We investigate the influence of electron-phonon interactions on the dynamical properties of a quantum-dot-cavity QED system. We show that non-Markovian effects in the phonon reservoir lead to strong changes in the dynamics, arising from photon-assisted dephasing processes, not present in Markovian treatments. A pronounced consequence is the emergence of a phonon induced spectral asymmetry when detuning the cavity from the quantum-dot resonance. The asymmetry can only be explained when considering the polaritonic quasi-particle nature of the quantum-dot-cavity system. Furthermore, a temperature…
We introduce and model a three-dimensional (3D) atomic-scale phononic metamaterial producing two-path phonon interference antiresonances to control the heat flux spectrum. We show that a crystal plane partially embedded with defect-atom arrays can completely reflect phonons at the frequency prescribed by masses and interaction forces. We emphasize the predominant role of the second phonon path and destructive interference in the origin of the total phonon reflection and thermal conductance reduction in comparison with the Fano-resonance concept. The random defect distribution in the plane and …
In the bilayer ReS$ _{2} $ channel of a field-effect transistor (FET), we demonstrate using Raman spectroscopy that electron doping (n) results in softening of frequency and broadening of linewidth of the in-plane vibrational modes, leaving out-of-plane vibrational modes unaffected. Largest change is observed for the in-plane Raman mode at $\sim$ 151 cm$^{-1} $, which also shows doping induced Fano resonance with the Fano parameter 1/q = -0.17 at doping concentration of $\sim 3.7\times10^{13}$ cm$^{-2} $. A quantitative understanding of our results is provided by first-principles density funct…
We theoretically investigate the transport properties of a molecule embedded in one arm of a mesoscopic Aharonov-Bohm interferometer. Due to the presence of phonons the molecule level position ($ε_d$) and the electron-electron interaction ($U$) undergo a \emph{polaronic shift} which affects dramatically the electronic transport through the molecular junction. When the electron-phonon interaction is weak the linear conductance presents Fano-line shapes as long as the direct channel between the electrodes is opened. The observed Fano resonances in the linear conductance are originated from the i…
The effect of electron-phonon coupling on the current noise in a molecular junction is investigated within a simple model. The model comprises a 1-level bridge representing a molecular level that connects between two free electron reservoirs and is coupled to a vibrational degree of freedom representing a molecular vibrational mode. The latter in turn is coupled to a phonon bath that represents the thermal environment. We focus on the zero frequency noise spectrum and study the changes in its behavior under weak and strong electron-phonon interactions. In the weak coupling regime we find that …
The dynamics of the one-dimensional array of the single-walled carbon nanotubes, which interact by van der Waals forces, is considered. The molecular dynamics simulation shows that both the mutual displacements of the nanotubes and the deformations of their walls occur in the low-frequency oscillations domain. The composite model taking into account both types of the nanotubes' motions was developed in the framework of the thin elastic shell theory. Such an approach allows us to reduce the problem to the dynamics of the two-parametric linear lattice with contact interaction. The dispersion rel…
It is shown that the electron scattering by static defects, acoustic or optical phonons in quantum wells subjected to an in-plane magnetic field is asymmetric. The probability of scattering contains terms which are proportional to both the electron wave vector and the magnetic field components. The terms under study are caused by the lack of an inversion center in quantum wells due to structure or bulk inversion asymmetry although they are of pure diamagnetic origin. Such a magnetic field induced asymmetry of scattering can be responsible for a number of phenomena. In particular, the asymmetry…
