We investigate the Fano interference in the presence of a "which way" detector, i.e., a local electron-phonon coupler, in the context of mesoscopic transport. Special attention is paid to study whether the phonon sidebands in the differential conductance spectra exhibit the typical lineshape of the Fano interference. When using a double-dot model we obtain two seemly contradictory results by slightly different approaches: The Markovian approach leads to {\it absolutely no} Fano interference at the phonon sidebands, while the Non-Markovian approach results in {\it finite} Fano interference at the phonon sidebands. On the other hand, by using the usual Aharonov-Bohm (AB)-ring model, i.e., only one dot is embedded into one arm of an AB-ring, only the Non-Markovian results are recovered. We explain these contradictory results and make a comparison between the double-dot model and the usual AB-ring model at length. Moreover, we also point out the essential difference between the manifestation of the "which way" effect in mesoscopic double-slit experiments and its optical counterpart.
Coherent quantum tunneling effects on quantum interference are investigated in electron transport through a mesoscopic interferometer. An evanescent wave tunneling through a potential barrier in one arm can interfere with a propagating wave passing through the other arm of interferometer. It is shown that, even for the same arm lengths, such a quantum interference can induce a circulating current, where Fano antiresonances do not occur in electron transmission. It is found that there exists a critical value of asymmetric arm lengths that gives rise to a Fano antiresonance in electron transmiss…
The Fano effect, which occurs through the quantum-mechanical cooperation between resonance and interference, can be observed in electron transport through a hybrid system of a quantum dot and an Aharonov-Bohm ring. While a clear correlation appears between the height of the Coulomb peak and the real asymmetric parameter $q$ for the corresponding Fano lineshape, we need to introduce a complex $q$ to describe the variation of the lineshape by the magnetic and electrostatic fields. The present analysis demonstrates that the Fano effect with complex asymmetric parameters provides a good probe to d…
The transmission probability and phase through a few-electron quantum dot are studied within a resonance theory for the strong coupling regime to the conducting leads. We find that the interaction between overlapping resonances leads to their separation in the complex energy plane and to the decoherent dephasing of the resonant modes. The appearance of the Fano effect is conditioned not only by the induced dephasing generally associated with a phase lapse, but also by a favorable parity of the resonant modes. To identify the contribution of each resonance to the transmission, we propose, in th…
We investigate the electron transport through a mesoscopic ring side-coupled with a quantum dot(QD) in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit(SO) interaction. It is shown that both the Fano resonance and the spin interference effects play important roles in the electron transport properties. As the QD level is around the Fermi energy, the total conductance shows typical Fano resonance line shape. By applying an electrical gate voltage to the QD, the total transmission through the system can be strongly modulated. By threading the mesoscopic ring with a magnetic flux, the time-reversal symmetry of t…
Interference between different possible paths lies at the heart of quantum physics. Such interference between coupled discrete and continuum states of a system can profoundly change its interaction with light as seen in Fano resonance. Here we present a unique many-body Fano system composed of a discrete phonon vibration and continuous electron-hole pair transitions in bilayer graphene. Mediated by the electron-phonon interactions, the excited state is described by new quanta of elementary excitations of hybrid phonon-exciton nature. Infrared absorption of the hybrid states exhibit characteris…
The in-plane optical phonons around 200 meV in few-layer graphene are investigated utilizing infrared absorption spectroscopy. The phonon spectra exhibit unusual asymmetric features characteristic of Fano resonances, which depend critically on the layer thickness and stacking order of the sample. The phonon intensities in samples with rhombohedral (ABC) stacking are significantly higher than those with Bernal (AB) stacking. These observations reflect the strong coupling between phonons and interband electronic transitions in these systems and the distinctive variation in the joint density of e…
We study sequential tunneling through a metallic nanoparticle close to the Stoner instability coupled to parallely magnetized electrodes. Increasing the bias voltage successively opens transport channels associated with excitations of the nanoparticle's total spin. For the current this leads just to a steplike increase. The Fano factor, in contrast, shows oscillations between large super-Poissonian and sub-Poissonian values as a function of bias voltage. We explain the enhanced Fano factor in terms of generalized random-telegraph noise and propose the shot noise as a convenient tool to probe t…
We theoretically study the resonant tunneling and Fano resonance in quantum dots with electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction. We examine the bias-voltage ($V$) dependence of the decoherence, using Keldysh Green function method and perturbation with respect to the e-ph interaction. With optical phonons of energy $ω_0$, only the elastic process takes place when $eV<ω_0$, in which electrons emit and absorb phonons virtually. The process suppresses the resonant amplitude. When $eV>ω_0$, the inelastic process is possible which is accompanied by real emission of phonons. It results in the dephasing and …
A critical aspect of quantum mechanics is the nonlocal nature of the wavefunction, a characteristic that may yield unexpected coupling of nominally-isolated systems. The capacity to detect this coupling can be vital in many situations, especially those in which its strength is weak. In this work we address this problem in the context of mesoscopic physics, by implementing an electron-wave realization of a Fano interferometer using pairs of coupled quantum point contacts (QPCs). Within this scheme, the discrete level required for a Fano resonance is provided by pinching off one of the QPCs, the…
Theoretical Raman line shape functions have been studied to take care of quantum confinement effect and Fano effect individually and jointly. The characteristics of various Raman line shapes have been studied in terms of the broadening and asymmetry of Raman line shapes. It is shown that the asymmetry in the Raman line-shape function caused by these two effects individually does not add linearly to give asymmetry of line-shape generated by considering the combined effect. This indicates existence of interplay between the two effects. The origin of interplay lies in the fact that Fano effect it…
We report measurements of the bias dependence of the Fano factor in ensembles of atomic-scale Au junctions at 77 K. Previous measurements of shot noise at room temperature and low biases have found good agreement of the Fano factor with the expectations of the Landauer- Büttiker formalism, while enhanced Fano factors have been observed at biases of hundreds of mV [R. Chen et al., Sci. Rep. 4, 4221 (2014)]. We find even stronger enhancement of shot noise at 77 K with an "excess" Fano factor up to ten times the low bias value. We discuss the observed ensemble Fano factor bias dependence in terms…
The finite size effects of the thermal conductivity $κ$ have been studied in the phonon space. It is found that only a few phonon modes are selected to take part in the thermal transport when the size $L$ of the system is decreased. The amount of the selected phonon modes is proportional to the $L$. In this way, $κ$ decreases with the decreasing of $L$. Such mechanism for the size effect of $κ$ found in this work is beyond the Phonon-Boundary scattering. The exponent $α$ of the power law $κ\sim L^α$ has been fitted, showing that the exponent is not universal.
With the rapidly increasing integration density and power density in nanoscale electronic devices, the thermal management concerning heat generation and energy harvesting becomes quite crucial. Since phonon is the major heat carrier in semiconductors, thermal transport due to phonons in mesoscopic systems has attracted much attention. In quantum transport studies, the nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method is a versatile and powerful tool that has been developed for several decades. In this review, we will discuss theoretical investigations of thermal transport using the NEGF approach f…
Thermal radiative phenomena can be strongly influenced by the coupling of phonons and long-range electromagnetic fields at infrared frequencies. Typically employed macroscopic descriptions of thermal fluctuations tend to ignore atomistic effects that become relevant at nanometric scales, whereas purely microscopic treatments ignore long-range, geometry-dependent electromagnetic effects. We describe a mesoscopic framework for modeling thermal fluctuation phenomena among molecules in the vicinity of macroscopic bodies, conjoining atomistic treatments of electronic and vibrational fluctuations ob…
The theoretical assertion that the Fano asymmetry parameter and the asymptotic initial phase of a harmonic oscillator interacting with a continuum are interrelated is experimentally verified. By an example of coherent fully symmetric A1g phonons in bismuth that are excited by ultrashort laser pulses at liquid helium temperature, it is demonstrated that, for negative values of the asymmetry parameter, the asymptotic phase increases as the modulus of the parameter decreases.
We study differential shot noise in mesoscopic diffusive normal-superconducting (NS) heterostructures at finite voltages where nonlinear effects due to the superconducting proximity effect arise. A numerical scattering-matrix approach is adopted. Through an NS contact, we observe that the shot noise shows a reentrant dependence on voltage due to the superconducting proximity effect but the differential Fano factor stays approximately constant. Furthermore, we consider differential shot noise in the structures where an insulating barrier is formed between normal and superconducting regions and …
Our objective is to study resonant tunneling of an electron in the presence of inelastic scattering by optical phonons. Using a recently developed technique, based on exact mapping of a many-body problem onto a one-body problem, we compute transmission through a single site at finite temperatures. We also compute current through a single site at finite temperatures and an arbitrary strength of the potential drop over the tunneling region. Transmission vs. incident electron energy at finite temperatures displays additional peaks due to phonon absorption processes. Current at a voltage bias smal…
A Fano-like phonon resonance is observed in few-layer (~3) graphene at room temperature using infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. This Fano resonance is the manifestation of a strong electron-phonon interaction between the discrete in-plane lattice vibrational mode and continuum electronic excitations in graphene. By employing ammonia chemical doping, we have obtained different Fano line shapes ranging from anti-resonance in hole-doped graphene to phonon-dominated in n-type graphene. The Fano resonance shows the strongest interference feature when the Fermi level is located near the Dirac…
We study influence of the phonon modes on a subgap spectrum and Andreev conductance for the double quantum dot vertically coupled between a metallic and superconducting lead. For the monochromatic phonon reservoir we obtain replicas of the interferometric Fano-type structures appearing simultaneously in the particle and hole channels. We furthermore confront the induced on-dot pairing with the electron correlations and investigate how the phonon modes affect the zero-bias signature of the Kondo effect in Andreev conductance.
We explain a hierarchy of Friedel sum rule like formulas that help us understand response of mesoscopic systems to applied electric and magnetic fields. The formulas can be derived fully quantum mechanically and then there is a mathematical way to argue a semiclassical limit which may make the formulas practically relevant. But the mathematical prescription is not physically relevant in presence of a Fano resonance. A proper understanding of what exactly is the physical semiclassical limit is therefor not known and require future work.
We report a photoluminescence observation of robust excitonic polarons due to strong coupling of exciton and longitudinal optical (LO) phonon as well as Fano-type interference in high quality ZnO crystal. At low enough temperatures, the strong coupling of excitons and LO phonons leads to not only traditional Stokes lines (SLs) but also up to second-order anti-Stokes lines (ASLs) besides the zero-phonon line (ZPL). The SLs and ASLs are found to be not mirror symmetric with respect to the ZPL, strongly suggesting that they are from different coupling states of exciton and phonons. It is more int…
Since their discovery, graphene-based systems represent an exceptional playground to explore the emergence of peculiar quantum effects. The present paper focuses on the anomalous appearence of strong infrared phonon resonances in the optical spectroscopy of bilayer graphene and on their pronounced Fano-like asymmetry, both tunable in gated devices. By developing a full microscopic many-body approach for the optical phonon response we explain how both effects can be quantitatively accounted for by the quantum interference of electronic and phononic excitations. We show that the phonon modes bor…
The Fano effect, which arises from an interference between a localized state and the continuum, reveals a fundamental aspect of quantum mechanics. We have realized a tunable Fano system in a quantum dot (QD) in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer, which is the first convincing demonstration of this effect in mesoscopic systems. With the aid of the continuum, the localized state inside the QD acquires itinerancy over the system even in the Coulomb blockade. Through tuning of the parameters, which is an advantage of the present system, unique properties of the Fano effect on the phase and coherence …
We studied magneto-optical response of a canonical topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ with the goal of addressing a controversial issue of electron-phonon coupling. Magnetic-field induced modifications of reflectance are very pronounced in the infrared part of the spectrum, indicating strong electron-phonon coupling. This coupling causes an asymmetric line-shape of the 60 cm$^{-1}$ phonon mode, and is analyzed within the Fano formalism. The analysis reveals that the Fano asymmetry parameter (q) changes sign when the cyclotron resonance is degenerate with the phonon mode. To the best of our kno…
We use the Landauer-Büttiker formalism to study the mesoscopic Fano effect in Aharonov-Bohm rings with an embedded two-dimensional noninteracting dot. The magnetic field dependence of the dot levels leads to a global shift of the Fano lines which becomes important for small ring/dot area ratios. As the magnetic field is varied the Fano dips move periodically from one side of the peak to the other, as reported by Kobayashi {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 88}, 256806 (2002)]. We show that this effect appears due to a specific magnetic control of the difference between the phase of the single…
This work revisits the physics giving rise to the carbon nanotubes phonon bands in the mid- infrared. Our measurements of doped and undoped samples of single-walled carbon nanotubes in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy show that the phonon bands exhibit an asymmetric lineshape and that their effective cross-section is enhanced upon doping. We relate these observations to electron-phonon coupling or, more specifically, to a Fano resonance phenomenon. We note that only the dopant-induced intraband continuum couples to the phonon modes and that defects induced in the sidewall increase the r…
We have studied the current magnification effect in a multi-channel open mesoscopic ring. We show that the current magnification effect is robust even in the presence of several propagating modes inspite of mode mixing and cancellation effects. The magnitude of circulating currents in the multi-channel regime can be much larger than that in a single channel case. Impurities can enhance or degrade the current magnification effect depending sensitively on the system parameters. Circulating currents are mostly associated with Fano resonances in the total transport current. We further show that sy…
We show the existence of Fano resonances in the context of near-field radiative heat transfer, which enable the strong suppression and enhancement of the spectral heat flux at specific wavelengths. This is demonstrated by making use of the plasmon-phonon coupling in a symmetric nano cavity composed by a polaritonic material coated with a metallic layer, in which each side of the cavity is kept at different temperatures. The strong hybridization of the plasmonic and phononic modes sustained by the multilayer structure is determined by the matching of their polarization. This leads to the openin…
We study the transport properties of an Aharonov-Bohm ring containing two quantum dots. One of the dots has well-separated resonant levels, while the other is chaotic and is treated by random matrix theory. We find that the conductance through the ring is significantly affected by mesoscopic fluctuations. The Breit-Wigner resonant peak is changed to an antiresonance by increasing the ratio of the level broadening to the mean level spacing of the random dot. The asymmetric Fano form turns into a symmetric one and the resonant peak can be controlled by magnetic flux. The conductance distribution…
We present a formulation of a nonequilibrium Green's function method for thermal current in nanojunction atomic systems with nonlinear interactions. This first-principle approach is applied to the calculation of the thermal conductance in carbon nanotube junctions. It is shown that nonlinearity already becomes important at low temperatures. Nonlinear interactions greatly suppress phonon transmission at room temperature. The peak of thermal conductance is found to be around 400K, in good agreement with experiments. High-order phonon scattering processes are important for diffusive heat transpor…
We calculate the frequency-dependent mesoscopic acoustic phonon transmission probability through the abrupt junction between a semi-infinite, one-dimensional cylindrical quantum wire and a three-dimensional bulk insulator, using a perturbative technique that is valid at low frequency. The system is described using elasticity theory, and traction-free boundary conditions are applied to all free surfaces. In the low-frequency limit the transmission probability vanishes as the frequency squared, the transport being dominated by the longitudinal channel, which produces a monopole source of elastic…
We study the effects of electron-phonon interactions on the transport properties of a molecular quantum dot coupled to two Luttinger-liquid leads. In particular, we investigate the effects on the steady state current and DC noise characteristics. We consider both equilibrated and unequilibrated on-dot phonons. The density matrix formalism is applied in the high temperature approximation and the resulting semi-classical rate equation is numerically solved for various strengths of electron-electron interactions in the leads and electron-phonon coupling. The current and the noise are in general s…
Kinetic theory of nonlinear current response to an external field is developed for mesoscopic normal metal rings threaded by a magnetic flux. General expressions for direct current (DC) are derived for a non-equilibrium regime. These expressions describe simultaneously a contribution to DC made by a non-equilibrium (external) field, as well as the contribution caused by interaction with intrinsic fields. Contributions of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions to the direct current in a non-equilibrium systems are studied. The kinetic equation for electrons in a disordered metal rin…
Phonon heat transport in mesoscopic systems is investigated using methods analogous to the Landauer description of electrical conductance. A "universal heat conductance" expression that depends on the properties of the conducting pathway only through the mode cutoff frequencies is derived. Corrections due to reflections at the junction between the thermal body and the conducting bridge are found to be small except at very low temperatures where only the lowest few bridge modes are excited. Various non-equilibrium phonon distributions are studied: a narrow band distribution leads to clear steps…
We investigate the effect of electron-phonon inelastic scattering on shot noise in nanoscale junctions in the regime of quasi-ballistic transport. We predict that when the local temperature of the junction is larger than its lowest vibrational mode energy $eV_c$, the inelastic contribution to shot noise (conductance) increases (decreases) with bias as $V$ ($\sqrt{V}$). The corresponding Fano factor thus increases as $\sqrt{V}$. We also show that the inelastic contribution to the Fano factor saturates with increasing thermal current exchanged between the junction and the bulk electrodes to a va…
Detection of local strain at the nanometer scale with high sensitivity remains challenging. Here we report near-field infrared nano-imaging of local strains in bilayer graphene through probing strain-induced shifts of phonon frequency. As a non-polar crystal, intrinsic bilayer graphene possesses little infrared response at its transverse optical (TO) phonon frequency. The reported optical detection of local strain is enabled by applying a vertical electrical field that breaks the symmetry of the two graphene layers and introduces finite electrical dipole moment to graphene phonon. The activate…
We study the influence of a DC bias voltage V on quantum interference corrections to the measured differential conductance in metallic mesoscopic wires and rings. The amplitude of both universal conductance fluctuations (UCF) and Aharonov-Bohm effect (ABE) is enhanced several times for voltages larger than the Thouless energy. The enhancement persists even in the presence of inelastic electron-electron scattering up to V ~ 1 mV. For larger voltages electron-phonon collisions lead to the amplitude decaying as a power law for the UCF and exponentially for the ABE. We obtain good agreement of the…
We generalize a proposal for detecting single phonon transitions in a single nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) to include the intrinsic anharmonicity of each mechanical oscillator. In this scheme two NEMS oscillators are coupled via a term quadratic in the amplitude of oscillation for each oscillator. One NEMS oscillator is driven and strongly damped and becomes a transducer for phonon number in the other measured oscillator. We derive the conditions for this measurement scheme to be quantum limited and find a condition on the size of the anharmonicity. We also derive the relation between th…
There is great interest in the development of novel nanomachines that use charge, spin, or energy transport, to enable new sensors with unprecedented measurement capabilities. Electrical and thermal transport in these mesoscopic systems typically involves wave propagation through a nanoscale geometry such as a quantum wire. In this paper we present a general theoretical technique to describe wave propagation through a curved wire of uniform cross-section and lying in a plane, but of otherwise arbitrary shape. The method consists of (i) introducing a local orthogonal coordinate system, the arcl…
We investigate the phononic energy transport properties of mesoscopic, suspended dielectric wires. The Landauer formula for the thermal conductance is derived and its universal aspects discussed. We then determine the variance of the energy current in the presence of a steady state current flow. In the final part, some initial results are presented concerning the nature of the temperature fluctuations of a mesoscopic electron gas thermometer due to the absorption and emission of wire phonons.
The pre-existing literature on phenomena at the mesoscopic scale is concerned among other things with phase coherent transport. Phase coherent transport dominates at very low temperatures. With increase in temperature, as the system size becomes comparable to the inelastic mean free path phase incoherence sets in. This incoherence further leads to dephasing, and as a consequence purely quantum effects in electron transport give way to classical macroscopic behavior. In this work we consider two distinct phenomenological models of incoherent transport, the Coherent Absorption and Wave Attenuati…
In this thesis I find an analytic expression for the conductance of a single electron transistor in the regime when temperature, level spacing, and charging energy of an island are all of the same order. I also study the correction to the spacing between Coulomb blockade peaks due to finite dot-lead tunnel couplings. I find analytic expressions for both correction to the spacing averaged over mesoscopic fluctuations and the rms of the correction fluctuations. In the second part of the thesis I discuss the feasibility of quantum dot based spin- and charge-qubits. Firstly, I study the effect of …
Double-level quantum systems are good candidates for revealing coherent quantum transport properties. Here, we consider quantum interference effects due to the formation of a two-level system (TLS) coupled to the edge channel of a zigzag Phosphorene nanoribbon (ZPNR). Using the tight-binding approach, we first demonstrate the formation of a TLS in bulk Phosphorene sheet due to the existence of two nearby vacancy impurities. Then, we show that such a TLS can couple to the quasi-one-dimensional continuum of the edge states in a ZPNR which results in the the appearance of two-dip Fano-type line s…
Recently we have developed a theory of Keldysh formalism for mesoscopic systems. The resulting nonequilibrium Kubo formula for differential conductance makes it possible to propose the new formula of shot noise $S_h$, and thus to study shot noise in correlated systems at any temperature and any bias voltage. Employing this new approach, we analyze shot noise in the Kondo regime through a quantum dot for the symmetric case at zero temperature. Using the renormalized perturbation theory, we prove that in the leading order of bias voltage $S_h$ equal to noise power at zero temperature conventiona…
At low temperatures, the thermal wavelength of acoustic phonons in a metallic thin film on a substrate can widely exceed the film thickness. It is thus generally believed that a mesoscopic device operating at low temperature does not carry an individual phonon population. In this work, we provide direct experimental evidence for the thermal decoupling of phonons in a mesoscopic quantum device from its substrate phonon heat bath at a sub-Kelvin temperature. A simple heat balance model assuming an independent phonon bath following the usual electron-phonon and Kapitza coupling laws can account f…
We study the influence of inelastic processes on shot noise and the Fano factor for a one-dimensional double-barrier structure, where resonant tunneling takes place between two terminals. Most studies to date have found, by means of various approximate or phenomenological methods, that shot noise is insensitive to dephasing caused by inelastic scattering. In this paper, we explore the status of this statement by deriving a general Landaur-Büttiker-type formula that expresses the current noise and Fano factor in a one-dimensional conductor through inelastic scattering amplitudes. For a double-b…
The transmission coefficient for vibrational waves crossing an abrupt junction between two thin elastic plates of different widths is calculated. These calculations are relevant to ballistic phonon thermal transport at low temperatures in mesoscopic systems and the Q for vibrations in mesoscopic oscillators. Complete results are calculated in a simple scalar model of the elastic waves, and results for long wavelength modes are calculated using the full elasticity theory calculation. We suggest that thin plate elasticty theory provide a useful and tractable approximation to the full three dimen…
Weyl semimetals are 3D phases of matter with topologically protected states that have remarkable macroscopic transport behaviors. As phonon dynamics and electron-phonon scattering play a critical role in the electrical and thermal transport, we pursue a fundamental understanding of the origin of these effects in type-I Weyl semimetals NbAs and TaAs. In the temperature-dependent Raman spectra of NbAs, we reveal a previously unreported Fano lineshape, a signature stemming from the electron-phonon interaction. Additionally, the temperature dependence of the $A_{1}$ phonon linewidths in both NbAs …
Raman spectra from silicon nanostructures, recorded using excitation laser power density of 1.0 kW/cm^2, is employed here to reveal the dominance of thermal effects at temperatures higher than the room temperature. Room temperature Raman spectrum shows only phonon confinement and Fano effects. Raman spectra recorded at higher temperatures show increase in FWHM and decrease in asymmetry ratio with respect to its room temperature counterpart. Experimental Raman scattering data are analyzed successfully using theoretical Raman line-shape generated by incorporating the temperature dependence of ph…
We calculate the conductance through strongly correlated T-shaped molecular or quantum dot systems under the influence of phonons. The system is modelled by the extended Anderson-Holstein Hamiltonian. The finite-U mean-field slave boson approach is used to study many-body effects. Phonons influence both interference and correlations. Depending on the dot unperturbed energy and the strength of electron-phonon interaction the system is occupied by a different number of electrons which effectively interact with each other repulsively or attractively. This leads together with the interference effe…
In this paper we address the topic of inelastic electron scattering in mesoscopic quantum transport. For systems where only elastic scattering is present, Landauer theory provides an adequate description of transport that relates the electronic current to single-particle transmission and reflection probabilities. A formalism proposed recently by Bonca and Trugman facilitates the calculation of the one-electron transmission and reflection probabilities for inelastic processes in mesoscopic conductors connected to one-dimensional ideal leads. Building on their work, we have developed a self-cons…
We study the thermoelectric transport coefficients of a one-dimensional (1D) electron waveguide connected to one and then two off-channel cavities, in the presence of dephasing phonons. The model system is that of a linear chain described as a 1D lattice. For simplicity we consider single-mode cavities, which may be tuned with external gates. While the presence of only one off-channel cavity yields a nearly symmetric transmission profile, which is canceled around the cavity mode, an additional cavity modifies this profile strongly and results in an asymmetric shape characterized by oscillation…
Due to their possibility to encode information and realize low-energy-consumption quantum devices, control and manipulation of the valley degree of freedom have been widely studied in electronic systems. In contrast, the phononic counterpart--valley phononics--has been largely unexplored, despite the importance in both fundamental science and practical applications. In this work, we demonstrate that the control of "valleys" is also applicable for phonons in graphene by using a grain boundary. In particular, perfect valley filtering effect is observed at certain energy windows for flexural mode…
A theoretical study of linear wave scattering by time-periodic spatially localized excitations (discrete breathers (DB)) is presented. We obtain that the wave propagation is strongly influenced by a local coupling between an open and closed channels generated by the DB. A peculiar effect of total reflection occurs due to a Fano resonance when a localized state originating from closed channels resonates with the open channel. For the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger chain we provide with an analytical result for the frequency dependence of the transmission coefficient, including the possibility …
We investigate a scheme that makes a quantum non-demolition measurement of the excitation level of a mesoscopic mechanical oscillator by utilizing the anharmonic coupling between two elastic beam bending modes. The non-linear coupling between the two modes shifts the resonant frequency of the readout oscillator proportionate to the excitation of the system oscillator. This frequency shift may be detected as a phase shift of the readout oscillation when driven on resonance. We show that in an appropriate regime this measurement approaches a quantum non-demolition measurement of the phonon numbe…
We examine energy relaxation of non-equilibrium quasiparticles in different vortex configurations in ``dirty'' $s$-wave superconductors. The heat flow from the electronic subsystem to phonons in a mesoscopic superconducting disk with a radius of the order of several coherence lengths is calculated both in the Meissner and giant vortex states using the Usadel approach. The recombination process is shown to be strongly affected by interplay of the subgap states, located in the vortex core and in the region at the sample edge where the spectral gap $E_{\rm g}$ is reduced by the Meissner currents.…
Two novel properties, unique for semiconductors: a negative electron affinity [1-2], and a high p-type surface electrical conductivity [3-4], were discovered in diamond at the end of the last century. Both properties appear when the diamond surface is hydrogenated. A natural question arises: is the influence of the surface hydrogen on diamond limited only to the electrical properties? Here, we report the first observation of a transparency peak at 1328 cm-1 in IR absorption of hydrogen-terminated pure (undoped) nanodiamonds. This new optical property is ascribed to Fano-type destructive interf…
