Periodic instantons, also called calorons, are the BPS solutions to the pure Yang-Mills theories on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$. It is known that the calorons interconnect with the instantons and the BPS monopoles as the ratio of their size to the period of $S^1$ varies. We give, in this paper, the action density configurations of the $SU(2)$ calorons of higher instanton charges with several platonic symmetries through the numerical Nahm transform, after the construction of the analytic Nahm data. The calorons considered are 5-caloron with octahedral symmetry, 7-caloron with icosahedral symmetry, and 4-caloron interconnecting tetrahedral and octahedral symmetries. We also consider the large period, or the instanton, limits of the Nahm data, i.e., the ADHM limits, and observe the similar spatial distributions of the action densities with the calorons.
Calorons (periodic instantons) interpolate between monopoles and instantons, and their holonomy gives approximate Skyrmion configurations. We show that, for each caloron charge N \leq 4, there exists a one-parameter family of calorons which are symmetric under subgroups of the three-dimensional rotation group. In each family, the corresponding symmetric monopoles and symmetric instantons occur as limiting cases. Symmetric calorons therefore provide a connection between symmetric monopoles, symmetric instantons and Skyrmions.
Instantons in pure Yang-Mills theories on partially periodic space $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ are usually called calorons. The background periodicity brings on characteristic features of calorons such as non-trivial holonomy, which plays an essential role for confinement/deconfinement transition in pure Yang-Mills gauge theory. For the case of gauge group $SU(2)$, calorons can be interpreted as composite objects of two constituent "monopoles" with opposite magnetic charges. There are often the cases that the two monopole charges are unbalanced so that the calorons possess net magnetic charge in …
We construct SU(2) calorons, with non-trivial holonomy, instanton charge 2 and magnetic charge 0 or -1; these calorons have two constituent monopoles, with charges (2,2) or (2,1). Our calorons are U(1)-symmetric and are constructed via the Nahm transform. They fall into distinct families which can be classified using representation theory. We consider large scale and large period limits of these calorons; in particular, the large scale limit may be a monopole, or a caloron with different topological charges.
Analytic Nahm data is re-examined for SU(2) calorons, or periodic instantons, of instanton charge 2. The Nahm equations are solved analytically in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions and the possible matching conditions are classified. The dimensions of framed moduli space for charge 2 caloron is enumerated and the maximal parameter, which is 16 for charge 2, case is identified. The monopole and instanton limits are also considered. It is found that the Nahm data which does not correspond to the standard monopoles plays significant role for calorons.
Calorons are finite action solutions to the anti-selfdual Yang-Mills equations on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$. They are generally constructed by the so called Nahm construction. We perform the numerical Nahm transform for the Nahm data of 3-calorons with $C_3$-symmetry, which do not have the monopole limits. Dissimilar to the cases of having monopole limits, we can trace the zero-circumference limit of $S^1$.It is found that the action density of the calorons tends to fade away as $S^1$ shrinks.
New static regular axially symmetric solutions of SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theory are constructed numerically. They represent calorons having trivial Polyakov loop at spacial infinity. The solutions are labeled by two integers $m,n$. It is shown that besides known, charge one self-dual periodic instanton solution, there are other non-self dual solutions of the Yang-Mills equations naturally composed out of pseudoparticle constituents.
We describe the recently found non-selfdual axially symmetric caloron solutions of SU(2) gluodynamics with trivial holonomy. We present the local Polyakov loop together with the action and topological charge density. Different from the well-known KvBLL calorons, the calorons considered here are composed out of pseudoparticle constituents carrying integer topological charge. The loci of Polyakov loop L = -1 correspond to the loci of Higgs field zeroes for corresponding solutions of the Yang-Mills Higgs system. For certain parameters pointlike monopole pairs turn into rings.
We study $SU(2)$ calorons, also known as periodic instantons, and consider invariance under isometries of $S^1\times\mathbb{R}^3$ coupled with a non-spatial isometry called the rotation map. In particular, we investigate the fixed points under various cyclic symmetry groups. Our approach utilises a construction akin to the ADHM construction of instantons -- what we call the monad matrix data for calorons -- derived from the work of Charbonneau and Hurtubise. To conclude, we present an example of how investigating these symmetry groups can help to construct new calorons by deriving Nahm data in…
The Nahm data of periodic instantons, often called calorons, with spatial $C_N$-symmetries are considered, by applying Sutcliffe's ansatz for the monopoles with $C_N$-symmetries. The bulk data of calorons are shown to enjoy the periodic Toda lattice, and the solutions are given in terms of elliptic theta functions. The case of N=3 calorons are investigated in detail. It is found that the "scale parameters" of these calorons have upper bounds in their values, so that they do not have the large scale, or monopole, limits. The instanton limit of the $C_3$-symmetric caloron is obtained.
We construct families of SO(3)-symmetric charge 1 instantons and calorons on the space H^3 x R. We show how the calorons include instantons and hyperbolic monopoles as limiting cases. We show how Euclidean calorons are the flat space limit of this family.
We derive a one-parameter family of gauged Skyrme models from Yang-Mills theory on $S^1\times\mathbb{R}^3$, in which skyrmions are well-approximated by calorons and monopoles. In particular we study the spherically symmetric solutions to the model with two distinct classes of boundary conditions, and compare them to calorons and monopoles. Calorons interpolate between instantons and monopoles in certain limits, and we observe similar behaviour in the constructed gauged Skyrme model in the weak and strong coupling limits. This comparison of calorons, monopoles, and skyrmions may be a way to fur…
Calorons (periodic instantons) are anti-self-dual (ASD) connections on S^1 \times R^3 and form an intermediate case between instantons and monopoles. The ADHM and Nahm constructions of instantons and monopoles can be regarded as generalizations of a correspondence between ASD connections on the 4-torus, often referred to as the Nahm transform. This thesis describes how the Nahm transform can be extended to the case of calorons. It is shown how calorons can be constructed from Nahm data similar to that for monopoles, but defined over the circle. The inverse transformation, from the caloron to t…
We present a simple result for the action density of the SU(n) charge one periodic instantons - or calorons - with arbitrary non-trivial Polyakov loop P_oo at spatial infinity. It is shown explicitly that there are n lumps inside the caloron, each of which represents a BPS monopole, their masses being related to the eigenvalues of P_oo. A suitable combination of the ADHM construction and the Nahm transformation is used to obtain this result.
Calorons of the SU(N) gauge group with non-trivial holonomy, i.e. periodic instantons with arbitrary eigenvalues of the Polyakov line at spatial infinity, can be viewed as composed of N Bogomolnyi--Prasad--Sommerfeld (BPS) monopoles or dyons. Using the metric of the caloron moduli space found previously we compute the integration measure over caloron collective coordinates in terms of the constituent monopole positions and their U(1) phases. In the limit of small separations between dyons and/or trivial holonomy, calorons reduce locally to the standard instantons whose traditional collective c…
We discuss the manifestation of instanton and monopole solutions on a periodic lattice at finite temperature and their relation to the infinite volume analytic caloron solutions with asymptotic non-trivial Polyakov loops. As a tool we use improved cooling and twisted boundary conditions. Typically we find 2Q lumps for topological charge Q. These lumps are BPS monopoles.
We analyze the zero-modes of the Dirac operator in quenched SU(3) gauge configurations at non-zero temperature and compare periodic and anti-periodic temporal boundary conditions for the fermions. It is demonstrated that for the different boundary conditions often the modes are localized at different space-time points and have different sizes. Our observations are consistent with patterns expected for Kraan - van Baal solutions of the classical Yang-Mills equations. These solutions consist of constituent monopoles and the zero-modes are localized on different constituents for different boundar…
The full ADHM-Nahm formalism is employed to find exact higher charge caloron solutions with non-trivial holonomy, extended beyond the axially symmetric solutions found earlier. Particularly interesting is the case where the constituent monopoles, that make up these solutions, are not necessarily well-separated. This is worked out in detail for charge 2. We resolve the structure of the extended core, which was previously localized only through the singularity structure of the zero-mode density in the far field limit. We also show that this singularity structure agrees exactly with the abelian c…
We study the relationship between ADHM/Nahm construction and ``solution generating technique'' of BPS solitons in noncommutative gauge theories. ADHM/Nahm construction and ``solution generating technique'' are the most strong ways to construct exact BPS solitons. Localized solitons are the solitons which are generated by the ``solution generating technique.'' The shift operators which play crucial roles in ``solution generating technique'' naturally appear in ADHM/Nahm construction and we can construct various exact localized solitons including new solitons: localized periodic instantons (=loc…
In this paper, the metric on the moduli space of the k=1 SU(n) periodic instanton -or caloron- with arbitrary gauge holonomy at spatial infinity is explicitly constructed. The metric is toric hyperKaehler and of the form conjectured by Lee and Yi. The torus coordinates describe the residual U(1)^{n-1} gauge invariance and the temporal position of the caloron and can also be viewed as the phases of n monopoles that constitute the caloron. The (1,1,..,1) monopole is obtained as a limit of the caloron. The calculation is performed on the space of Nahm data, which is justified by proving the isome…
The functional determinant is computed exactly for quantum oscillations about periodic instantons with non-trivial values of the Polyakov line at spatial infinity (or holonomy). Such instantons can be viewed as composed of the Bogomolnyi--Prasad--Sommerfeld (BPS) monopoles or dyons. We find the weight or the probability with which dyons occur in the pure Yang--Mills partition function. It turns out that dyons experience quantum interactions having the familiar "linear plus Coulomb" form but with the "string tension'' depending on the holonomy. We present an argument that at temperatures below …
We present the detailed derivation of the charge one periodic instantons - or calorons - with non-trivial holonomy for SU(2). We use a suitable combination of the Nahm transformation and ADHM techniques. Our results rely on our ability to compute explicitly the relevant Green's function in terms of which the solution can be conveniently expressed. We also discuss the properties of the moduli space, R^3 X S^1 X Taub-NUT/Z_2 and its metric, relating the holonomy to the Taub-NUT mass parameter. We comment on the monopole constituent description of these calorons, how to retrieve topological charg…
We discuss how an approximation to the axially symmetric sphalerons in the Skyrme model can be constructed from the holonomy of a non-BPS Yang-Mills calorons. These configurations, both in the Skyrme model and in the Euclidean Yang-Mills theory, are characterized by two integers n and m, where n are the winding numbers of the constituents and the second integer m defines type of the solution, it has zero topological charge for even m and for odd values of m the corresponding chain has total topological charge n. It is found numerically that the holonomy of the chains of interpolating calorons-…
The circle compactification of the 6-dim (2,0) superconformal theory of $A_{N-1}$ type leads the 5-dim SU(N) maximally supersymmetric gauge theory. Instanton solitons embody Kaluza-Klein modes and are conjectured to be composed of partonic constituents. We realize such a parton of 1/N instanton topological charge at the intersection of magnetic flux sheets. After a further compactification with nontrivial Wilson line expectation value, instantons or calorons have been shown to be split into fundamental monopoles of fractional instanton charge. In the symmetric phase with trivial Wilson line ex…
The origin of spectral singularities in finite-gap singly periodic PT-symmetric quantum systems is investigated. We show that they emerge from a limit of band-edge states in a doubly periodic finite gap system when the imaginary period tends to infinity. In this limit, the energy gaps are contracted and disappear, every pair of band states of the same periodicity at the edges of a gap coalesces and transforms into a singlet state in the continuum. As a result, these spectral singularities turn out to be analogous to those in the non-periodic systems, where they appear as zero-width resonances.…
We study the symmetric square of Picard-Fuchs operators of genus one curves and the thereby induced generalized Clausen identities. This allows the computation of analytic expressions for the periods of all one-parameter K3 manifolds in terms of elliptic integrals. The resulting expressions are globally valid throughout the moduli space and allow the explicit inversion of the mirror map and the exact computation of distances, useful for checks of the Swampland Distance Conjecture. We comment on the generalization to multi-parameter models and provide a two-parameter example.
