We present a theoretical study of a nanowire made of a three-dimensional topological insulator. The bulk topological insulator is described by a continuum-model Hamiltonian, and the cylindrical-nanowire geometry is modelled by a hard-wall boundary condition. We provide the secular equation for the eigenergies of the systems (both for bulk and surface states) and the analytical form of the energy eigenfunctions. We describe how the surface states of the cylinder are modified by finite-size effects. In particular, we provide a $1/R$ expansion for the energy of the surface states up to second order. The knowledge of the analytical form for the wavefunctions enables the computation of matrix elements of any single-particle operators. In particular, we compute the matrix elements of the optical dipole operator, which describe optical absorption and emission, treating intra- and inter-band transition on the same footing. Selection rules for optical transitions require conservation of linear momentum parallel to the nanowire axis, and a change of $0$ or $\pm 1$ in the total-angular-momentum projection parallel to the nanowire axis. The magnitude of the optical-transition matrix elements is strongly affected by the finite radius of the nanowire.
Topological insulators (TIs) exhibit a quantized magnetoelectric response when time-reversal symmetry is broken on its surface. This unusual electromagnetic (EM) response is a unique macroscopic manifestation of the quantum Hall effect on the TI surface and it is described by a quantized Chern-Simons theory. In this paper, we construct the Green's function (GF) describing the EM response of two topological media separated by a cylindrical interface. This GF, in the appropriate limits, describes the magnetoelectric effect of both i) a cylindrical TI surrounded by a dielectric fluid, and ii) a T…
A general approach allowing to construct the magnetization distributions of arbitrary topological charge in small exchange-dominated cylindrical ferromagnetic particles is presented. The exchange energy functional is minimized by these distributions exactly. The magnetostatic energy is accounted partially, so that it facilitates a choice between the topologically equivalent exchange-only solutions. The resulting magnetization distributions can be easily generalized to a variety of non-circular cylindrical shapes by means of a conformal transformation. As an example a magnetic structures of a t…
We theoretically investigate the emergence of Jackiw-Rebbi zero modes and their conductance signature in non-uniform topological insulator nano-wires. We modelled the non-uniform nano-wires as junction between two cylindrical nano-wires with different radius. In the limit of wire length being much larger than its radius, the surface state of the nanowire splits into one dimensional Dirac modes propagating along the axis of the cylinder owing to radial confinement. The sign of the mass gap in each of these Dirac mode is decided by angular momentum quantum number corresponding to the rotational …
In this Book Chapter (invited) we briefly review the basic concepts defining topological insulators and focus on elaborating on the key experimental results that revealed and established their symmetry protected (SPT) topological nature. We then present key experimental results that demonstrate magnetism, Kondo insulation, mirror chirality or topological crystalline order and superconductivity in spin-orbit topological insulator settings and how these new (bulk insulating) phases of matter arise through topological quantum phase transitions from Bloch band insulators via topological or Dirac s…
We study the Heisenberg Model on cylindrically symmetric curved surfaces. Two kinds of excitations are considered. The first is given by the isotropic regime, yielding the sine-Gordon equation and $π$-solitons are predicted. The second one is given by the XY model, leading to a vortex turning around the surface. Helical states are also considered, however, topological arguments can not be used to ensure its stability. The energy and the anisotropy parameter which stabilizes the vortex state are explicitly calculated for two surfaces: catenoid and hyperboloid. The results show that the anisotro…
We study spintronics and spincaloritronics in topological insulators. We show spintronics effects in 2D topological insulator junctions and 3D topological insulators coupled to ferromagnets. We also investigate spin polarization on the surface of a topological insulator induced by a circularly polarized light and refraction at the junction between two topological insulators. As for spincaloritronics effects, we show transverse magnetic heat transport and thermoelectric transport in topological insulators. Finite-size effect in topological insulators and band structure engineering of interface …
Three-dimensional topological insulators are characterized by the presence of protected gapless spin helical surface states. In realistic samples these surface states are extended from one surface to another, covering the entire sample. Generally, on a curved surface of a topological insulator an electron in a surface state acquires a spin Berry phase as an expression of the constraint that the effective surface spin must follow the tangential surface of real space geometry. Such a Berry phase adds up to pi when the electron encircles, e.g., once around a cylinder. Realistic topological insula…
The lifetime of electrons on edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator against the background of an allowed two-dimensional band has been determined. It has been shown that this time in the case of scattering on Coulomb impurities can be significantly larger than the mean free time of two-dimensional electrons. As a result, the conductivity of the metallic two-dimensional topological insulator strip can be determined primarily by edge states.
Eigenenergies of a non-Hermitian system without parity-time symmetry are complex in general. Here, we show that the chiral boundary states of higher-dimensional (two-dimensional and three-dimensional) non-Hermitian topological insulators without parity-time symmetry can be Hermitian with real eigenenergies under certain conditions. Our approach allows one to construct Hermitian chiral edge and hinge states from non-Hermitian two-dimensional Chern insulators and three-dimensional second-order topological insulators, respectively. Such Hermitian chiral boundary channels have perfect transmission…
We propose a different route to time-reversal invariant Weyl semimetals employing multilayer heterostructures comprising ordinary "trivial" insulators and nontrivial insulators with \textit{pairs} of protected Dirac cones on the surface. We consider both the case of weak topological insualtors, where surface Dirac cones are pinned to time-reversal invariant momenta, and of topological crystalline insulators with unpinned surface Dirac cones. For both realizations we explain phenomenologically how the proposed construction leads to the emergence of a Weyl semimetal phase. We further formulate e…
Algebraic and geometric mean density of states in disordered systems may reveal properties of electronic localization. In order to understand the topological phases with disorder in two dimensions, we present the calculated density of states for disordered Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model. The topological phase is characterized by a perfectly quantized conducting plateau, carried by helical edge states, in a two-terminal setup. In the presence of disorder, the bulk of the topological phase is either a band insulator or an Anderson insulator. Both of them can protect edge states from backscattering.…
We present an exact solution of a modifed Dirac equation for topological insulator in the presence of a hole or vacancy to demonstrate that vacancies may induce bound states in the band gap of topological insulators. They arise due to the Z_2 classification of time-reversal invariant insulators, thus are also topologically-protected like the edge states in the quantum spin Hall effect and the surface states in three-dimensional topological insulators. Coexistence of the in-gap bound states and the edge or surface states in topological insulators suggests that imperfections may affect transport…
Lecture-notes: introducing and discussing basics on axion electrodynamics with application in the calculation of the images generated by an electric (or a magnetic) charge located close to an interface ordinary insulator-topological insulator
We study spin conductivity of the surface states in a thin film of a topological insulator with Kubo formulas. Hybridization between the different sides of the film opens a gap at the Dirac point. We found that in the gapped region spin conductivity remains finite. In the gapless region near the band gap spin conductivity is enhanced. These findings make a thin film of a topological insulator as a promising material for spintronic applications.
In this work, we identify a new class of Z2 topological insulator protected by non-symmorphic crystalline symmetry, dubbed a "topological non-symmorphic crystalline insulator". We construct a concrete tight-binding model with the non-symmorphic space group pmg and confirm the topological nature of this model by calculating topological surface states and defining a Z2 topological invariant. Based on the projective representation theory, we extend our discussion to other non-symmorphic space groups that allows to host topological non-symmorphic crystalline insulators.

Three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators in general need to be protected by certain kinds of symmetries other than the presumed $U(1)$ charge conservation. A peculiar exception is the Hopf insulators which are 3D topological insulators characterized by an integer Hopf index. To demonstrate the existence and physical relevance of the Hopf insulators, we construct a class of tight-binding model Hamiltonians which realize all kinds of Hopf insulators with arbitrary integer Hopf index. These Hopf insulator phases have topologically protected surface states and we numerically demonstrate the r…
We study a non-Hermitian non-Abelian topological insulator preserving $PT$ symmetry, where the non-Hermitian term represents nonreciprocal hoppings. As it increases, a spontaneous $PT$ symmetry breaking transition occurs in the perfect-flat band model from a real-line-gap topological insulator into an imaginary-line-gap topological insulator. By introducing a band bending term, we realize two phase transitions, where a metallic phase emerges between the above two topological insulator phases. We discuss an electric-circuit realization of non-Hermitian non-Abelian topological insulators. We fin…
We investigate scattering of the topological surface state of a three-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological insulator when graphene is deposited on the topological-insulator surface. Specifically, we consider the (111) surface of a Bi$_2$Se$_3$-like topological insulator. We present a low-energy model for the bulk graphene-topological insulator heterostructure and we calculate the transmission probability at zigzag and armchair edges of the deposited graphene, and the conductance through graphene nanoribbon barriers and show that its features can be understood from antiresonances in …
The electronic bands are classified according to their topology. We compute the connection and curvature for the electronic bands and show that the physical properties are determined by topological invariants which are equivalent to the existence of the zero modes. We apply this method to the Topological Insulators and Topogical Superconductors.
Topological phases, including the conventional first-order and higher-order topological insulators and semimetals, have emerged as a thriving topic in the fields of condensed-matter physics and material science. Usually, a topological insulator is characterized by a fixed order topological invariant and exhibits associated bulk-boundary correspondence. Here, we realize a new type of topological insulator in a bilayer phononic crystal, which hosts simultaneously the first-order and second-order topologies, referred here as the hybrid-order topological insulator. The one-dimensional gapless heli…
Thanks to its unique symmetry, the unidirectional spin Hall and Rashba-Edelstein magnetoresistance (USRMR) is of great fundamental and practical interest, particularly in the context of reading magnetization states in two-terminal spin-orbit torque switching memory and logic devices. Recent studies show that topological insulators could improve USRMR amplitude. However, the topological insulator device configurations studied so far in this context, namely ferromagnetic metal/topological insulator bilayers and magnetically doped topological insulators, suffer from current shunting by the metall…
We consider weak topological insulators with a twofold rotation symmetry around the dark direction, and show that these systems can be endowed with the topological crystalline structure of a higher-order topological insulator protected by rotation symmetry. These hybrid-order weak topological insulators display surface Dirac cones on all surfaces. Translational symmetry breaking perturbations gap the Dirac cones on the side surfaces leaving anomalous helical hinge modes behind. We also prove that the existence of this topological phase comes about due to a hidden crystalline topological invari…
Notion of square-root topological insulators have been recently generalized to higher-order topological insulators. In two-dimensional square-root higher-order topological insulators, emergence of in-gap corner states are inherited from the squared Hamiltonian which hosts higher-order topology. In this paper, we propose that the martini lattice model serves as a concrete example of higher-order topological insulators. Furthermore, we also propose a suquare-root higher-order topological insulator based on the martini model. Specifically, we propose that the honeycomb lattice model with two-site…
The search of novel topological phases, such as the quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) or the axion insulator, has motivated different schemes to introduce magnetism into topological insulators. One scheme is to introduce ferromagnetic dopants in topological insulators. However, it is generally challenging and requires carefully engineered growth/heterostructures or relatively low temperatures to observe the QAHI due to issues such as the added disorder with ferromagnetic dopants. Another promising scheme is using the magnetic proximity effect with a magnetic insulator to magnetize the to…
We study the two dimensional Chern insulator and spin Hall insulator on a non-orientable Riemann surface, the Mobius strip, where the usual bandstructure topological invariant is not defined. We show that while the flow pattern of edge currents can detect the twist of the Mobius strip in the case of Chern insulator, it can not do so in spin Hall insulator.
It has been proposed that adding disorder to a topologically trivial mercury telluride/cadmium telluride (HgTe/CdTe) quantum well can induce a transition to a topologically nontrivial state. The resulting state was termed topological Anderson insulator and was found in computer simulations of the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model. Here, we show that the topological Anderson insulator is a more universal phenomenon and also appears in the Kane-Mele model of topological insulators on a honeycomb lattice. We numerically investigate the interplay of the relevant parameters, and establish the parameter r…
Topological insulators are noninteracting, gapped fermionic systems which have gapless boundary excitations. They are characterized by topological invariants, which can be written in many different ways, including in terms of Green's functions. Here we show that the existence of the edge states directly follows from the existence of the topological invariant written in terms of the Green's functions, for all ten classes of topological insulators in all spatial dimensions. We also show that the resulting edge states are characterized by their own topological invariant, whose value is equal to t…
The possible realization of dissipationless chiral edge current in a topological insulator / magnetic insulator heterostructure is based on the condition that the magnetic proximity exchange coupling at the interface is dominated by the Dirac surface states of the topological insulator. Here we report a polarized neutron reflectometry observation of Dirac electrons mediated magnetic proximity effect in a bulk-insulating topological insulator (Bi$_{0.2}$Sb$_{0.8}$)$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ / magnetic insulator EuS heterostructure. We are able to maximize the proximity induced magnetism by applying an elec…
We present a generalization of free fermionic topological insulators that are composed of topological subsystems of differing dimensionality. We specifically focus on topological subsystems of nonzero co-dimension are embedded within a trivial insulating environment. A general procedure is described to isolate and classify such embedded topological insulators and we present three representative examples in varying dimensions and symmetry classes. Moreover, we demonstrate with concrete examples that the presence of periodically embedded topological insulators in an otherwise trivially classifie…
We found, through extensive study of micro reflectance difference spectroscopy images of Bi2Te3 topological insulator surface, the first clear experimental evidence that there is non-uniform spatial distribution of spin polarization (spin domains) in the surface of the topological insulator. These spin domains involve when they are at different temperatures, in an external magnetic field, and can be driven by electric current. Such surface spin domains in topological insulators have never been predicted by any theory so far.
We investigate a topological switch between second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) and topological crystalline insulators (TCIs). Both the SOTI and the TCI are protected by the mirror and inversion symmetries, for which we define the bulk topological numbers of the same type. We take examples of square nanodisks on the square lattice and hexagonal nanodisks on the triangular lattice. When inplane magnetic field is introduced parallel to one of the helical edges, the system becomes a TCI. The conductance along the edge is 1 in the unit of the conductance quantum $e^2/h$. As the inplane fie…
The electronic structures of graphene systems and topological insulators have closely-related features, such as quantized Berry phase and zero-energy edge states. The reason for these analogies is that in both systems there are two relevant orbital bands, which generate the pseudo-spin degree of freedom, and, less obviously, there is a correspondence between the valley degree of freedom in graphene and electron spin in topological insulators. Despite the similarities, there are also several important distinctions, both for the bulk topological properties and for their implications for the edge…
Fluctuations of Hamiltonian eigenfunctions, measured by the inverse participation ratio (IPR), turn out to characterize topological-band insulator transitions occurring in 2D Dirac materials like silicene, which is isostructural with graphene but with a strong spin-orbit interaction. Using monotonic properties of the IPR, as a function of a perpendicular electric field (which provides a tunable band gap), we define topological-like quantum numbers that take different values in the topological-insulator and band-insulator phases.
Second-order topological insulators are crystalline insulators with a gapped bulk and gapped crystalline boundaries, but topologically protected gapless states at the intersection of two boundaries. Without further spatial symmetries, five of the ten Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes allow for the existence of such second-order topological insulators in two and three dimensions. We show that reflection symmetry can be employed to systematically generate examples of second-order topological insulators and superconductors, although the topologically protected states at corners (in two dimension…
We introduce a coupled-layer construction to describe three-dimensional topological crystalline insulators protected by reflection symmetry. Our approach uses stacks of weakly-coupled two-dimensional Chern insulators to produce topological crystalline insulators in one higher dimension, with tunable number and location of surface Dirac cones. As an application of our formalism, we turn to a simplified model of topological crystalline insulator SnTe, showing that its protected surface states can be described using the coupled layer construction.
We define a class of insulators with gapless surface states protected from localization due to the statistical properties of a disordered ensemble, namely due to the ensemble's invariance under a certain symmetry. We show that these insulators are topological, and are protected by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant. Finally, we prove that every topological insulator gives rise to an infinite number of classes of statistical topological insulators in higher dimensions. Our conclusions are confirmed by numerical simulations.
The last several years have witnessed the rapid developments in the study and understanding of topological insulators. In this review, after a brief summary of the history of topological insulators, we focus on the recent progress made in transport experiments on topological insulator films and nanowires. Some quantum phenomena, including the weak antilocalization, the Aharonov Bohm effect and the Shubnikov de Haas oscillations, observed in these nanostructures are described. In addition, the electronic transport evidence of the superconducting proximity effect as well as an anomalous resistan…
The disorder effects on higher-order topological phases in periodic systems have attracted much attention. However, in aperiodic systems, such as quasicrystalline systems, the interplay between disorder and higher-order topology is still unclear. In this paper, we investigate the effects of disorder on two types of second-order topological insulators, including a quasicrystalline quadrupole insulator and a modified quantum spin Hall insulator, in a two-dimensional Amman-Beenker tiling quasicrystalline lattice. We demonstrate that the higher-order topological insulators are robust against weak …
We theoretically investigate tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) devices, which are probing the spin-momentum coupled nature of surface states of the three-dimensional topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. Theoretical calculations are performed based on a realistic tight-binding model for Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. We study both three dimensional devices, which exploit the surface states of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$, as well as two-dimensional devices, which exploit the edge states of thin Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ strips. We demonstrate that the material properties of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ allow a TMR ratio at room temperat…
We discuss the relation between bulk topological invariants and the spectrum of surface states in three dimensional non-interacting topological insulators. By studying particular models, and considering general boundary conditions for the electron wavefunction on the crystal surface, we demonstrate that using experimental techniques that probe surface states, only strong topological and trivial insulating phases can be distinguished; the latter state being equivalent to a weak topological insulator. In a strong topological insulator, only the {\it parity} of the number of surface states, but n…
We show that hybrid structures of topological insulators and materials without topological protection can be employed to create perfectly conducting channels hosted in the non-topological part. These states inherit the topological protection from the proximity of the topological insulator but are more fragile to time-reversal symmetry breaking because of their extended character. We explore their formation in the band structure of model hybrid systems as well as realistic heterostructures involving HgTe/CdTe-based two-dimensional topological insulators. Using numerical quantum transport calcul…
We present a theoretical analysis of Dirac magneto-plasmons in topological insulator nanowires. We discuss a cylindrical geometry where Berry phase effects induce the opening of a gap at the neutrality point. By taking into account surface electron wave functions introduced in previous papers and within the random phase approximation, we provide an analytical form of the dynamic structure factor. Dispersions and spectral weights of Dirac plasmons are studied with varying the radius of the cylinder, the surface doping, and the strength of an external magnetic field. We show that, at zero surfac…
We discuss the effects of disorder in time-reversal invariant topological insulators and superconductors in three spatial dimensions. For three-dimensional topological insulator in symplectic (AII) symmetry class, the phase diagram in the presence of disorder and a mass term, which drives a transition between trivial and topological insulator phases, is computed numerically by the transfer matrix method. The numerics is supplemented by a field theory analysis (the large-$N_f$ expansion where $N_f$ is the number of valleys or Dirac cones), from which we obtain the correlation length exponent, a…
Collective plasmon excitations in a helical electron liquid on the surface of strong three-dimensional topological insulator are considered. The properties and internal structure of these excitations are studied. Due to spin-momentum locking in helical liquid on a surface of topological insulator, the collective excitations should manifest themselves as coupled charge- and spin-density waves.
While the experimental progress on three dimensional topological insulators is rapid, the development of their two dimensional counterparts has been comparatively slow, despite their technological promise. The main reason is materials challenges of the to date only realizations of two-dimensional topological insulators, in semiconductor quantum wells. Here we identify a two dimensional topological insulator in a material which does not face similar challenges and which is by now most widely available and well-charaterized: graphene. For certain commensurate interlayer twists graphene multilaye…

We study electronic structures at an interface between a topological insulator and a ferromagnetic insulator by using three-dimensional two-band model. In usual ferromagnetic insulators, the exchange potential is much larger than the bulk gap size in the topological insulators and electronic structures are asymmetric with respect to the fermi level. In such situation, we show that unusual metallic states appear under the magnetic moment pointing the perpendicular direction to the junction plane, which cannot be described by the two-dimensional effective model around the Dirac point. When the m…
A quadrupole topological insulator, being one higher-order topological insulator with nontrivial quadrupole quantization, has been intensely investigated very recently. However, the tight-binding model proposed for such emergent topological insulators demands both positive and negative hopping coefficients, which imposes an obstacle in practical realizations. Here we introduce a feasible approach to design the sign of hopping in acoustics, and construct the first acoustic quadrupole topological insulator that stringently emulates the tight-binding model. The inherent hierarchy quadrupole topol…
Chiral surface states in topological insulators are robust against interactions, non-magnetic disorder and localization, yet topology does not yield protection in transport. This work presents a theory of interacting topological insulators in an external electric field, starting from the quantum Liouville equation for the many-body density matrix. Out of equilibrium, topological insulators acquire a current-induced spin polarization. Electron-electron interactions renormalize the non-equilibrium spin polarization and charge conductivity, and disorder in turn enhances this renormalization by a …
Topological states of matter are characterized by global topological invariants which change their value across a topological quantum phase transition. It is commonly assumed that the transition between topologically distinct noninteracting gapped phases of fermions is necessarily accompanied by the closing of the band gap as long as the symmetries of the system are maintained. We show that such a quantum phase transition is possible without closing the gap in the case of a three-dimensional topological band insulator. We demonstrate this by calculating the free energy of the minimal model for…
We study laser driven spin-current effects at ferromagnet/topological-insulator interfaces by two complementary experimental approaches. The DC photocurrent is studied in ferromagnet/topological-insulator bilayers with high spatial resolution. Dynamic interface currents are explored via the emission of terahertz radiation emitted by these currents with high temporal resolution. From our experiments, we reveal a lateral and dynamic interaction of the ferromagnet and the topological insulator interface.
The Letter is analyzing bulk spin (moment) currents and spin (moment) accumulation at edges of a 2D topological insulator taking into account reflection from edges. Accumulation occurs only at edge states, which distinguish topological insulators from conventional ones. The band continuum can support the transverse bulk spin (moment) current, but it does not governed by the topological Chern number and may exist in a conventional insulator. There is no edge accumulation related with bulk currents.
Two-dimensional topological insulators possess two counter propagating edge channels with op- posite spin direction. Recent experimental progress allowed to create ferromagnetic topological insulators realizing a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state. In the QAH state one of the two edge channels disappears due to the strong ferromagnetic exchange field. We investigate heterostuctures of topological insulators and ferromagnetic topological insulators by means of numerical transport calculations. We show that spin current flow in such heterostructures can be controlled with high fidelity. Specific…
We study surface plasmons localized on interfaces between topologically trivial and topologically non-trivial time reversal invariant materials in three dimensions. For the interface between a metal and a topological insulator the magnetic polarization of the surface plasmon is rotated out of the plane of the interface; this effect should be experimentally observable by exciting the surface plasmon with polarized light. More interestingly, we argue that the same effect also is realized on the interface between vacuum and a doped topological insulator with non-vanishing bulk carrier density.
Topological crystalline insulators define a new class of topological insulator phases with gapless surface states protected by crystalline symmetries. In this work, we present a general theory to classify topological crystalline insulator phases based on the representation theory of space groups. Our approach is to directly identify possible nontrivial surface states in a semi-infinite system with a specific surface, of which the symmetry property can be described by 17 two-dimensional space groups. We reproduce the existing results of topological crystalline insulators, such as mirror Chern i…
In recent years, second-order topological insulators have been proposed as a new class of topological insulators. Second-order topological insulators are materials with gapped bulk and surfaces, but with topologically protected gapless states at the intersection of two surfaces. These gapless states are called hinge states. In this paper, we give a general proof that any insulators with inversion symmetry and gapped surface in class A always have hinge states when the $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ topological index $μ_{1}$ is $μ_{1}=2$. We consider a three-dimensional insulator whose boundary conditions al…
We numerically investigate and experimentally demonstrate an in-situ topological band transition in a highly tunable mechanical system made of cylindrical granular particles. This system allows us to tune its inter-particle stiffness in a controllable way, simply by changing the contact angles between the cylinders. The spatial variation of particles' stiffness results in an in-situ transition of the system's topology. This manifests as the emergence of a boundary mode in the finite system, which we observe experimentally via laser Doppler vibrometry. When two topologically different systems a…
