A quadrupole topological insulator, being one higher-order topological insulator with nontrivial quadrupole quantization, has been intensely investigated very recently. However, the tight-binding model proposed for such emergent topological insulators demands both positive and negative hopping coefficients, which imposes an obstacle in practical realizations. Here we introduce a feasible approach to design the sign of hopping in acoustics, and construct the first acoustic quadrupole topological insulator that stringently emulates the tight-binding model. The inherent hierarchy quadrupole topology has been experimentally confirmed by detecting the acoustic responses at the bulk, edge and corner of the sample. Potential applications can be anticipated for the topologically robust in-gap states, such as acoustic sensing and energy trapping.
Quadrupole topological insulators are a new class of topological insulators with quantized quadrupole moments, which support protected gapless corner states. The experimental demonstrations of quadrupole-topological insulators were reported in a series of artificial materials, such as photonic crystals, acoustic crystals, and electrical circuits. In all these cases, the underlying structures have discrete translational symmetry and thus are periodic. Here we experimentally realize two-dimensional aperiodic-quasicrystalline quadrupole-topological insulators by constructing them in electrical ci…
The Berry phase associated with energy bands in crystals can lead to quantized quantities, such as the quantization of electric dipole polarization in an insulator, known as a one-dimensional (1D) topological insulator (TI) phase. Recent theories have generalized such quantization from dipole to higher multipole moments, giving rise to the discovery of multipole TIs, which exhibit a cascade hierarchy of multipole topology at boundaries of boundaries: A quantized octupole moment in the three-dimensional (3D) bulk can induce quantized quadrupole moments on its two-dimensional (2D) surfaces, whic…
Topological insulators are new states of matter in which the topological phase originates from symmetry breaking. Recently, time-reversal invariant topological insulators were demonstrated for classical wave systems, such as acoustic systems, but limited by inter-pseudo-spin or inter-valley backscattering. This challenge can be effectively overcome via breaking the time-reversal symmetry. Here, we report the first experimental realization of acoustic topological insulators with nonzero Chern numbers, viz., acoustic Chern insulator (ACI), by introducing an angular-momentum-biased resonator arra…
High-order topological insulators (TIs) are a family of recently-predicted topological phases of matter obeying an extended topological bulk-boundary correspondence principle. For example, a two-dimensional (2D) second-order TI does not exhibit gapless one-dimensional (1D) topological edge states, like a standard 2D TI, but instead has topologically-protected zero-dimensional (0D) corner states. So far, higher-order TIs have been demonstrated only in classical mechanical and electromagnetic metamaterials exhibiting quantized quadrupole polarization. Here, we experimentally realize a second-ord…
Quantized electric quadrupole insulators have recently been proposed as novel quantum states of matter in two spatial dimensions. Gapped otherwise, they can feature zero-dimensional topological corner mid-gap states protected by the bulk spectral gap, reflection symmetries and a spectral symmetry. Here we introduce a topolectrical circuit design for realizing such corner modes experimentally and report measurements in which the modes appear as topological boundary resonances in the corner impedance profile of the circuit. Whereas the quantized bulk quadrupole moment of an electronic crystal do…
The recent discovery of higher-order topological insulators (TIs) has opened new possibilities in the search for novel topological materials and metamaterials. Second-order TIs have been implemented in two-dimensional (2D) systems exhibiting topological 'corner states', as well as three-dimensional (3D) systems having one-dimensional (1D) topological 'hinge states'. Third-order TIs, which have topological states three dimensions lower than the bulk (which must thus be 3D or higher), have not yet been reported. Here, we describe the realization of a third-order TI in an anisotropic diamond-latt…
High-order topological insulators are a recent development extending the topological theory of charge polarization to higher multipole moments. Since their theoretical proposal, several experimental realizations of high-order topological insulators have been reported. However, high order topological transitions have not been observed. In this letter, we report on the observation of a high-order topological transition in a quadrupole topological insulator implemented in an LC circuit with nonlinear couplings. This system presents the ability to confine electromagnetic energy in its corner state…
We present a theoretical study and experimental realization of a system that is simultaneously a four-dimensional (4D) Chern insulator and a higher-order topological insulator (HOTI). The system sustains the coexistence of (4-1)-dimensional chiral topological hypersurface modes (THMs) and (4-2)-dimensional chiral topological surface modes (TSMs). Our study reveals that the THMs are protected by second Chern numbers, and the TSMs are protected by a topological invariant composed of two first Chern numbers, each belonging a Chern insulator existing in sub-dimensions. With the synthetic coordinat…
Low-energy electrons near Dirac/Weyl nodal points mimic massless relativistic fermions. However, as they are not constrained by Lorentz invariance, they can exhibit tipped-over type-II Dirac/Weyl cones which provide highly anisotropic physical properties and responses, creating unique possibilities. Recently, they have been observed in several quantum and classical systems. Yet, there is still no simple and deterministic strategy to realize them since their nodal points are accidental degeneracies, unlike symmetry-guaranteed type-I counterparts. Here, we propose a band-folding scheme for const…
We present the experimental realization of different approaches to increase the amount of quantized current which is driven by surface acoustic waves through split gate structures in a two dimensional electron gas. Samples with driving frequencies of up to 4.7 GHz have been fabricated without a deterioration of the precision of the current steps, and a parallelization of two channels with correspondingly doubled current values have been achieved. We discuss theoretical and technological limitations of these approaches for metrological applications as well as for quantum logics.
The topological phases of matter are characterized using the Berry phase, a geometrical phase, associated with the energy-momentum band structure. The quantization of the Berry phase, and the associated wavefunction polarization, manifest themselves as remarkably robust physical observables, such as quantized Hall conductivity and disorder-insensitive photonic transport. Recently, a novel class of topological phases, called higher-order topological phases, were proposed by generalizing the fundamental relationship between the Berry phase and the quantized polarization, from dipole to multipole…
The quadrupole topological insulator (QTI) has attracted intense studies as a prototype of symmetry-protected higher-order topological phases of matter with a quantized quadrupole moment. The realization of QTIs has been reported in various static settings with periodic structures. Here, we theoretically investigate topological phase transitions and establish the QTI phase in a periodically driven system with disorder. In the clean limit, the Floquet QTI phase emerges from a topologically trivial band structure driven by elliptically polarized irradiation. More strikingly, starting from a pure…
The notion of higher-order topological insulators has endowed materials with topological states beyond the first order. Particularly, a three-dimensional (3D) higher-order topological insulator can host topologically protected 1D hinge states, referred to as the second-order topological insulator, or 0D corner states, referred to as the third-order topological insulator. Similarly, a 3D higher-order topological semimetal can be envisaged if it hosts states on the 1D hinges. Here we report the realization of a second-order topological Weyl semimetal in a 3D-printed acoustic crystal, which posse…
Recently, the theory of quantized dipole polarization has been extended to account for electric multipole moments, giving rise to the discovery of multipole topological insulators (TIs). Both two-dimensional (2D) quadrupole and three-dimensional (3D) octupole TIs with robust zero-dimensional (0D) corner states have been realized in various classical systems. However, due to the intrinsic 3D limitation, the higher dimensional multipole TIs, such as four-dimensional (4D) hexadecapole TIs, are supposed to be extremely hard to construct in real space, although some of their properties have been di…
We have studied acoustic topological edge modes in a honeycomb phononic crystal composed of metallic nano-pillars on a LiNbO$_3$ substrate. Acoustic band calculations show that the topological surface acoustic wave (SAW) mode inhabits the edge of the honeycomb phononic crystal in spite of the hybridization with the internal acoustic modes of the substrate. Pulse-type microwave impedance microscopy realized clear visualization of the gigahertz topological edge mode between two mutually inverted topological phononic crystals. A frequency-dependent image showed that the edge mode evolves as the b…
Weyl points (WPs) are isolated degeneracies carrying quantized topological charges, and are therefore robust against Hermitian perturbations. WPs are predicted to spread to the Weyl exceptional rings (WERs) in the presence of non-Hermiticity. Here, we use a one-dimensional (1D) Aubry-Andre-Harper (AAH) model to construct a Weyl semimetal in a 3D parameter space comprised of one reciprocal dimension and two synthetic dimensions. The inclusion of non-Hermiticity in the form of gain and loss produces a WER. The topology of the WER is characterized by both its topological charge and non-Hermitian …
Topological acoustics is an emerging field that lies at the intersection of condensed matter physics, mechanical structural design and acoustics engineering. It explores the design and construction of novel artificial structures, such as acoustic metamaterials and phononic crystals, to manipulate sound waves robustly, taking advantage of topological protection. Early work on topological acoustics was limited to duplicating topological phases that have been understood in condensed matter systems, but recent advances have shifted the paradigm to exploring novel topological concepts that are diff…
In this work, we supply an engineering solution that paves the way to the implementation of the full classification table of topological insulators with passive acoustic crystals. As an example, we design an acoustic crystal displaying the full range of characteristics of a topological insulator from class D, such as non-trivial Chern numbers and an exact particle-hole symmetry for both bulk and edge dynamics. The key is a particular geometry of the acoustic resonators that facilitates a large number of independent and equal-strength couplings, eight to be precise, such that the mode-coupling …
We propose a three-step periodic drive protocol to engineer two-dimensional~(2D) Floquet quadrupole superconductors and three-dimensional~(3D) Floquet octupole superconductors hosting zero-dimensional Majorana corner modes~(MCMs), based on unconventional $d$-wave superconductivity. Remarkably, the driven system conceives four phases with only $0$ MCMs, no MCMs, only anomalous $π$ MCMs, and both regular $0$ and anomalous $π$ MCMs. To circumvent the subtle issue of characterizing $0$ and $π$ MCMs separately, we employ the periodized evolution operator to architect the dynamical invariants, namel…
Recently extended from the modern theory of electric polarization, quantized multipole topological insulators (QMTIs) describe higher-order multipole moments, lying in nested Wilson loops, which are inherently quantized by lattice symmetries. Overlooked in the past, QMTIs reveal new types of gapped boundaries, which themselves represent lower-dimensional topological phases and host topologically protected zero-dimensional (0D) corner states. Inspired by these pioneering theoretical predictions, tremendous efforts have been devoted to the experimental observation of topological quantized quadru…
Topological phases of matter are classified based on their Hermitian Hamiltonians, whose real-valued dispersions together with orthogonal eigenstates form nontrivial topology. In the recently discovered higher-order topological insulators (TIs), the bulk topology can even exhibit hierarchical features, leading to topological corner states, as demonstrated in many photonic and acoustic artificial materials. Naturally, the intrinsic loss in these artificial materials has been omitted in the topology definition, due to its non-Hermitian nature; in practice, the presence of loss is generally consi…
Recent theoretical studies have extended the Berry phase framework to account for higher electric multipole moments, quadrupole and octupole topological phases have been proposed. Although the two-dimensional quantized quadrupole insulators have been demonstrated experimentally, octupole topological phases have not previously been observed experimentally. Here we report on the experimental realization of classical analog of octupole topological insulator in the electric circuit system. Three-dimensional topolectrical circuits for realizing such topological phases are constructed experimentally…
Topological features embedded in ancient braiding and knotting arts endow significant impacts on our daily life and even cutting-edge science. Recently, fast growing efforts are invested to the braiding topology of complex Bloch bands in non-Hermitian systems. This new classification of band topology goes far beyond those established in Hermitian counterparts. Here, we present the first acoustic realization of the topological non-Hermitian Bloch braids, based on a two-band model easily accessible for realizing any desired knot structure. The non-Hermitian bands are synthesized by a simple bina…
Symmetry plays a key role in modern physics, as manifested in the revolutionary topological classification of matter in the past decade. So far, we seem to have a complete theory of topological phases from internal symmetries as well as crystallographic symmetry groups. However, an intrinsic element, i.e., the gauge symmetry in physical systems, has been overlooked in the current framework. Here, we show that the algebraic structure of crystal symmetries can be projectively enriched due to the gauge symmetry, which subsequently gives rise to new topological physics never witnessed under ordina…
