A very fast iterative method is presented to calculate the internal constitution of the outer crust of a cold nonaccreted neutron star, making use of very accurate analytical formulas for the transition pressures between adjacent crustal layers and their density. In addition to the composition of the different crustal layers, their depth and their baryonic mass content can be simultaneously estimated using an approximate solution of Einstein's general relativistic equations. The overall computing time is drastically reduced compared to the traditional approach, thus opening the door to large-scale statistical studies and sensitivity analyses.
The iterative method recently proposed for determining the internal constitution of the outer crust of a nonaccreted neutron star is extended to magnetars by taking into account the Landau-Rabi quantization of electron motion induced by the presence of a very high magnetic field. It is shown that in the strongly quantizing regime, the method can be efficiently implemented using new analytical solutions for the transitions between adjacent crustal layers. Detailed numerical computations are performed to assess the performance and precision of the method.
We study the effect of physics input on thermal evolution of neutron stars in soft X-ray transients (SXTs). In particular, we consider different modern models of the sources of deep crustal heating during accretion episodes and the effects brought about by impurities embedded in the crust during its formation. We simulate thermal structure and evolution of episodically accreting neutron stars under different assumptions on the crust composition and on the distribution of heat sources and impurities. For the nonaccreted crust, we consider the nuclear charge fluctuations that arise at crust form…

By means of bootstrap technique, we perform a full error analysis on the Duflo-Zucker mass model. We illustrate the impact of such study on the predicted chemical composition of the outer crust of a non-accreting neutron star. We define an existence probability for each nuclear species as a function of the depth of the crust. We observe that, due to statistical uncertainties, instead of having a well defined transition between two successive layers, we have a mixture of two species.
The equilibrium properties of the outer crust of cold nonaccreting magnetars (i.e. neutron stars endowed with very strong magnetic fields) are studied using the latest experimental atomic mass data complemented with a microscopic atomic mass model based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method. The Landau quantization of electron motion caused by the strong magnetic field is found to have a significant impact on the composition and the equation of state of crustal matter. It is also shown that the outer crust of magnetars could be much more massive than that of ordinary neutron stars.
The strong magnetic fields found on the surface of magnetars are known to have profound effects in the physics of atoms in magnetar envelopes. We argue that the Friedel oscillations in the Coulomb force between the ions due to electron shielding can, for certain values of the parameters, be the dominant effect determining the crystal structure in the outer crust of magnetars. We estimate the densities and magnetic fields for which this occurs, compute some of the elastic moduli and lattice phonon dispersion relations in this "Friedel crystal" phase.
The outer crust properties of cold non-accreting neutron stars are studied within the framework of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which includes the effects of modifications of the quark structure inside individual nucleons when they are within a high-density nuclear medium. With a unique set of five well-constrained adjustable parameters, which have a clear physical basis, the QMC model gives predictions for the ground state observables of even-even nuclei which agree with experiment as well as traditional models. Furthermore, it gives improved theoretical values for nuclei thought to …
By means of Monte Carlo methods, we perform a full error analysis on the Duflo-Zucker mass model. In particular, we study the presence of correlations in the residuals to obtain a more realistic estimate of the error bars on the predicted binding energies. To further reduce the discrepancies between model prediction and experimental data we also apply a Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network. We show that the root mean square of the model further reduces of roughly 40\%. We then use the resulting models to predict the composition of the outer crust of a non accreting neutron star. We provide a f…
We discuss outer and inner crusts of neutron stars in strong magnetic fields. Here, we demonstrate the effect of Landau quantization of electrons on the ground state properties of matter in outer and inner crusts in magnetars. This effect leads to the enhancement of the electron number density in strong magnetic fields with respect to the zero field case. For the outer crust, we adopt the magnetic Baym-Pethick-Sutherland model and obtain the sequence of nuclei and equation of state (EoS). The properties of nuclei in the inner crust in the presence of strong magnetic fields are investigated usi…
The deep crustal heating, associated with exothermal nuclear reactions, is believed to be a key parameter for describing the thermal evolution of accreting neutron stars. In this paper, we present the first thermodynamically consistent calculations of the crustal heating for realistic compositions of thermonuclear ashes. In contrast to previous studies based on the traditional approach, we account for neutron hydrostatic/diffusion (nHD) equilibrium condition imposed by superfluidity of neutrons in a major part of the inner crust and rapid diffusion in the remaining part of the inner crust. We …
We have studied the various properties of magnetically deformed atoms, replaced by deformed Wigner-Seitz cells, at the outer crust region of strongly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars) using a relativistic version of Thomas-Fermi model in cylindrical coordinates.
Treatment of the vortex motion in the superfluids of the inner crust and the outer core of neutron stars is a key ingredient in modeling a number of pulsar phenomena, including glitches and magnetic field evolution. After recalculating the microscopic vortex velocity in the inner crust, we evaluate the velocity for the vortices in the outer core for the first time. The vortex motion between pinning sites is found to be substantially faster in the inner crust than in the outer core, $v_0^{\rm crust} \sim 10^{7}\mbox{\cms} \gg v_0^{\rm core} \sim 1\mbox{\cms}$. One immediate result is that vorte…
The interior of a neutron star (NS) is usually assumed to be made of cold catalyzed matter. However, the outer layers are unlikely to remain in full equilibrium during the formation of the star and its cooling, especially after crystallization. We study the cooling and equilibrium composition of the outer layers of a NS down to crystallization. Here the impurity parameter, usually a free parameter in cooling simulations, is calculated self-consistently using a microscopic model for which a unified equation of state has recently been determined. We follow the evolution of the nuclear distributi…
The outer crust of a cold nonaccreting neutron star has been generally assumed to be stratified into different layers, each of which consists of a pure body-centered cubic ionic crystal in a charge compensating background of highly degenerate electrons. The validity of this assumption is examined by analyzing the stability of multinary ionic compounds in dense stellar matter. It is thus shown that their stability against phase separation is uniquely determined by their structure and their composition irrespective of the stellar conditions. However, equilibrium with respect to weak and strong n…
The observed thermal relaxation of transiently accreting neutron stars during quiescence periods in low-mass X-ray binaries suggests the existence of unknown heat sources in the shallow layers of neutron-star crust. Making use of existing experimental nuclear data, we estimate the maximum possible amount of heat that can be deposited in the outer crust of an accreting neutron star due to electron captures and pycnonuclear fusion reactions triggered by the burial of X-ray burst ashes.
We monitored the quiescent thermal emission from neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries after active periods of intense activity in x-rays (outbursts). The theoretical modeling of the thermal relaxation of the neutron star crust may be used to establish constraints on the crust composition and transport properties, depending on the astrophysical scenarios assumed. We numerically simulated the thermal evolution of the neutron star crust and compared them with inferred surface temperatures for five sources: MXB 1659-29, KS 1731-260, EXO 0748-676, XTE J1701-462 and IGR J17480-2446. We find that…
The equation of state (EoS) of the outer crust of a cold non-accreting magnetar has been determined using the model of Lai and Shapiro (1991). For this purpose, we have made use of the latest experimental atomic mass data complemented with a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) mass model. Magnetar crusts are found to be significantly different from the crusts of ordinary neutron stars.
Even though the crystallize nature of the neutron star crust plays a pivotal role in describing various fascinating astrophysical observations, its microscopic structure is not fully understood in the presence of a colossal magnetic field. In the present work, we study the crustal properties of a neutron star within an effective relativistic mean field framework in the presence of magnetic field strength $\sim 10^{17}$G. We calculate the equilibrium composition of the outer crust by minimizing the Gibbs free energy using the most recent atomic mass evaluations. The magnetic field significantly…
We study long-term thermal evolution of neutron stars in soft X-ray transients (SXTs), taking the deep crustal heating into account consistently with the changes of the composition of the crust. We collect observational estimates of average accretion rates and thermal luminosities of such neutron stars and compare the theory with observations. We perform simulations of thermal evolution of accreting neutron stars, considering the gradual replacement of the original nonaccreted crust by the reprocessed accreted matter, the neutrino and photon energy losses, and the deep crustal heating due to n…
Magnetic fields of order $10^{15}$ G have been measured at the surface of some neutron stars, and much stronger magnetic fields are expected to be present in the solid region beneath the surface. The effects of the magnetic field on the equation of state and on the composition of the crust due to Landau-Rabi quantization of electron motion are studied. Both the outer and inner crustal regions are described in a unified and consistent way within the nuclear-energy density functional theory.
Context. In the cooling process of a non-accreting neutron star, the composition and properties of the crust are thought to be fixed at the finite temperature where nuclear reactions fall out of equilibrium. A lower estimation for this temperature is given by the crystallization temperature, which can be as high as $\approx 7\times 10^9$ K in the inner crust, potentially leading to sizeable differences with respect to the simplifying cold-catalyzed matter hypothesis. Aims. We extend the recent work by Fantina et al. (2019) on the outer crust, to the study of the crystallization of the inner cr…
We discuss the ground state properties of matter in outer and inner crusts of neutron stars under the influence of strong magnetic fields. In particular, we demonstrate the effects of Landau quantization of electrons on compositions of neutron star crusts. First we revisit the sequence of nuclei and the equation of state of the outer crust adopting the Baym, Pethick and Sutherland (BPS) model in the presence of strong magnetic fields and most recent versions of the theoretical and experimental nuclear mass tables. Next we deal with nuclei in the inner crust. Nuclei which are arranged in a latt…
We investigate a thermo-resistive instability in the outer crusts of magnetars wherein a perturbation in temperature increases ohmic heating. We show that magnetars of characteristic age τ_{age} ~ 10^4 yr are unstable over timescales as short as days if strong current sheets are present in the outer crust. This instability could play an important role in the thermal and magnetic field evolution of magnetars, and may be related to bursting activity in magnetars.
We calculate the thermal conductivity of electrons for the strongly correlated multi-component ion plasma expected in the outer layers of neutron star's crust employing a Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) approach. This allows us to isolate the low energy response of the ions and use it to calculate the electron scattering rate and the electron thermal conductivity. We find that the scattering rate is enhanced by a factor 2-4 compared to earlier calculations based on the simpler electron-impurity scattering formalism. This findings directly impacts the interpretation of thermal relaxation obser…
In the crust of a neutron star, global torsional oscillations could occur in two elastic layers. The outer and inner layers are composed of spherical and cylindrical nuclei and of cylindrical holes (tubes) and spherical holes (bubbles), respectively, while between these two layers, a phase of slab-like (lasagna) nuclei with vanishingly small elasticity is sandwiched. In this work, we update systematic calculations of the eigenfrequencies of the fundamental oscillations in the inner layer by newly allowing for the presence of tubes. We find that the frequencies still depend strongly on the slop…
We study equation of state (EOS) of an accreting neutron star crust. Usually, such EOS is obtained assuming (implicitly) that the free (unbound) neutrons and nuclei in the inner crust move together. We argue, that this assumption violates the condition $μ_n^\infty={\rm const}$, required for hydrostatic (and diffusion) equilibrium of unbound neutrons ($μ^\infty_n$ is the redshifted neutron chemical potential). We construct a new EOS respecting this condition, working in the compressible liquid-drop approximation. We demonstrate that it is close to the catalyzed EOS in most part of the inner cru…
We calculate for the first time the phonon excitation rate in the outer crust of a neutron star due to scattering from light dark matter (LDM) particles gravitationally boosted into the star. We consider dark matter particles in the sub-GeV mass range scattering off a periodic array of nuclei through an effective scalar-vector interaction with nucleons. We find that LDM effects cause a modification of the net number of phonons in the lattice as compared to the standard thermal result. In addition, we estimate the contribution of LDM to the ion-ion thermal conductivity in the outer crust and fi…
Observations of soft X-ray transients in quiescence suggest the existence of heat sources in the crust of accreting neutron stars. Heat is thought to be released by electroweak and nuclear processes triggered by the burying of ashes of X-ray bursts. The heating is studied using a fully quantum approach taking consistently into account nuclear shell effects. We have followed the evolution of ashes made of $^{56}$Fe employing the nuclear energy-density functional theory. Both the outer and inner crusts are described using the same functional, thus ensuring a unified and thermodynamically consist…
We study heat diffusion after an energy release in a deep spherical layer of the outer neutron star crust (10^7 < ρ< 4 x 10^{11} g/cm^3). We demonstrate that this layer possesses specific heat-accumulating properties, absorbing heat and directing it mostly inside the star. It can absorb up to about 10^{43}-10^{44} erg due to its high heat capacity, until its temperature exceeds T ~ 3 x 10^9 K and triggers a rapid neutrino cooling. A warm layer with T ~ 10^8 - 3 x 10^9 K can serve as a good heat reservoir, which is thermally decoupled from the inner crust and the stellar core for a few months. …
Bearing in mind the application to the outer crust of the neutron stars (NSs), we investigate the magnetic field decay by means of the fully relativistic Particle-In-Cell simulations. Numerical computations are carried out in 2-dimensions, in which the initial magnetic fields are set to be composed both of the uniform magnetic fields that model the global fields penetrating the NS and of the turbulent magnetic fields that would be originated from the Hall cascade of the large-scale turbulence. Our results show that the whistler cascade of the turbulence transports the magnetic energy preferent…
The thermal conductivity of a dense {\it multi-component} plasma is critical to the modeling of accreting neutron stars. To this end, we perform large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to calculate the static structure factor of the dense multi-component plasma in the neutron star crust from near the photosphere-ocean boundary to the vicinity of the neutron drip point. The structure factors are used to validate a microscopic linear mixing rule that is valid for arbitrarily complex plasmas over a wide range of Coulomb couplings. The microscopic mixing rule in turn implies and validates the l…
Neutron stars in low-mass binary systems are subject to accretion. The common assumption in studying the properties of the neutron star crust is the fully accreted crust approximation. However, observations of some X-ray transient sources indicate that the original crust has not been completely replaced by accreted material, but is partly composed of the compressed original crust. A two-part (or hybrid) crust made of the original crust that is compressed and of the accreted material crashing onto it was reconstructed as a function of the accretion stage. The differences in the composition and …
We investigate outer crust compositions for a wide range of magnetic field strengths, up to $B\simeq 4\times10^{18}$ G, employing the latest experimental nuclear masses supplemented with various mass models. The essential effects of the magnetic field are twoholds: 1) Enhancement of electron fraction, which is connected to that of protons via the charge neutrality condition, due to the Landau-Rabi quantization of electron motion perpendicular to the field, namely, neutron-richness is suppressed for a given pressure. As a result, 2) nuclei can exist at higher pressures without dripping out neut…
Observed thermal emission from accreting neutron stars (NSs) in a quiescent state is believed to be powered by nonequilibrium nuclear reactions that heat the stellar crust (deep crustal heating paradigm). We derive a simple universal formula for the heating efficiency, assuming that an NS has a fully accreted crust. We further show that, within the recently proposed thermodynamically consistent approach to the accreted crust, the heat release can be parametrized by the only one parameter -- the pressure $P_{\rm oi}$ at the outer-inner crust interface (as we argue, this pressure should not nece…
We use the effective relativistic mean-field (E-RMF) model to study the crustal properties of the neutron star. The unified equations of state (EoS) are constructed using recently developed E-RMF parameter sets, such as FSUGarnet, IOPB-I, and G3. The outer crust composition is determined using the atomic mass evaluation 2020 data [Chinese Physics C {\bf 45}, 030002 (2021)] along with the available Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mass models [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 88}, 024308 (2013)] for neutron-rich nuclei. The structure of the inner crust is estimated by performing the compressible liquid drop model calc…
We use Molecular Dynamics simulations to study the formation and stability of single and multicomponent lattices in the outer crust of Neutron Stars. Including an improved treatment for Gaussian charge distributions of ions we obtain the expressions for the potential and forces arising from electron screened Coulomb interactions using the efficient Ewald sum procedure. %in the plasma. Our findings show that for baryon densities in the outer crust a point-like ion treatment can not fully describe the crystallization behaviour thus the Coulomb parameter, $Γ_C$, along with the usual screening par…
We present an ensemble of unified neutron star crust and core equations of state, constructed using an extended Skyrme energy density functional through the crust and outer core, and appended by two piecewise polytropes at higher densities. The equations of state are parameterized by the first three coefficients in the density expansion of the symmetry energy $J,L$ and $K_{\rm sym}$, the moment of inertia of a 1.338 M$_{\odot}$ star $I_{1.338}$ and the maximum neutron star mass $M_{\rm max}$. We construct an ensemble with uniform priors on all five parameters, and then apply data filters to th…

The heating and cooling of transiently accreting neutron stars provides a powerful probe of the structure and composition of their crust. Observations of superbursts and crust cooling of accretion-heated neutron stars require more heat release than is accounted for in current models. Obtaining firm constraints on the depth and magnitude of this extra heat is challenging and therefore its origin remains uncertain. We report on Swift and XMM-Newton observations of the transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary XTE J1709-267, which were made in 2012 September-October when it transitioned to qui…
Following an extremely interesting idea \cite{R1}, published long ago, the work function at the outer crust region of a strongly magnetized neutron star is obtained using relativistic version of Thomas-Fermi type model. In the present scenario, the work function becomes anisotropic; the longitudinal part is an increasing function of magnetic field strength, whereas the transverse part diverges. An approximate estimate of the electron density in the magnetosphere due to field emission and photo emission current, from the polar cap region are obtained.
We study breaking stress of deformed Coulomb crystals in a neutron star crust, taking into account electron plasma screening of ion-ion interaction; calculated breaking stress is fitted as a function of electron screening parameter. We apply the results for analyzing torsional oscillation modes in the crust of a non-magnetic star. We present exact analytic expression for the fundamental frequencies of such oscillations and show that the frequencies of all torsional oscillations are insensitive to the presence of the outer neutron star crust. The results can be useful in theoretical modeling of…
Correct interpretation of X-ray observations of transiently accreting neutron stars requires modeling of nuclear-physical processes in these objects. We consider a chain of nuclear reactions that drives the crust composition in an accreting neutron star and heats up the star. We constructed multicomponent approach with the kinetics of nuclear reactions described in simplified stepwise manner. The redistribution of nucleons between nuclei by emission and capture of neutrons is shown to significantly affect the nuclear reaction chains and the composition of the inner crust. In particular, even i…
X-ray observations of transiently accreting neutron stars during quiescence provide information about the structure of neutron star crusts and the properties of dense matter. Interpretation of the observational data requires an understanding of the nuclear reactions that heat and cool the crust during accretion, and define its nonequilibrium composition. We identify here in detail the typical nuclear reaction sequences down to a depth in the inner crust where the mass density is 2E12 g/cm^3 using a full nuclear reaction network for a range of initial compositions. The reaction sequences differ…
The temperature in the crust of an accreting neutron star, which comprises its outermost kilometer, is set by heating from nuclear reactions at large densities, neutrino cooling, and heat transport from the interior. The heated crust has been thought to affect observable phenomena at shallower depths, such as thermonuclear bursts in the accreted envelope. Here we report that cycles of electron capture and its inverse, $β^-$ decay, involving neutron-rich nuclei at a typical depth of about 150 m, cool the outer neutron star crust by emitting neutrinos while also thermally decoupling the surface …
Pulsar glitches are attributed to the sudden re-coupling of very weakly coupled large scale superfluid components in the neutron star interior. This process leads to rapid exchange of angular momentum and an increase in spin frequency. The transfer of angular momentum is regulated by a dissipative mutual friction, whose strength defines the spin-up timescale of a glitch. Hence, observations of glitch rises can be used to shed light on the dominant microphysical interactions at work in the high density interior of the star. We present a simple analytical model, complemented with more detailed n…
Now 50 years since the existence of the neutron star crust was proposed, we review the current understanding of the nuclear physics of the outer layers of accreting neutron stars. Nuclei produced during nuclear burning replace the nascent composition of the neutron star ocean and crust. Non-equilibrium nuclear reactions driven by compression alter the outer thermal structure and chemical composition, leaving observable imprints on astronomical phenomena. As observations of bursting neutron stars and cooling neutron stars have increased, the recent volume of astronomical data allows new insight…
