Correct interpretation of X-ray observations of transiently accreting neutron stars requires modeling of nuclear-physical processes in these objects. We consider a chain of nuclear reactions that drives the crust composition in an accreting neutron star and heats up the star. We constructed multicomponent approach with the kinetics of nuclear reactions described in simplified stepwise manner. The redistribution of nucleons between nuclei by emission and capture of neutrons is shown to significantly affect the nuclear reaction chains and the composition of the inner crust. In particular, even if the outer crust has one-component composition, the appearance of free neutrons in the inner crust leads to branching of reaction chains and formation of the multicomponent composition. We apply the compressible liquid drop nuclear model, which includes effects of free neutrons on nuclear energies. It allows us to calculate the composition, the heating profile and the equation of state of matter up to densities ρ~ 2 \times 10^{13} g cm^{-3}.
Observed temperatures of transiently accreting neutron stars in the quiescent state are generally believed to be supported by deep crustal heating, associated with non-equilibrium exothermic reactions in the crust. Traditionally, these reactions are studied by considering nuclear evolution governed by compression of the accreted matter. Here we show that this approach has a basic weakness, that is that in some regions of the inner crust the conservative forces, applied for matter components (nuclei and neutrons), are not in mechanical equilibrium. In principle the force balance can be restored…
X-ray observations of transiently accreting neutron stars during quiescence provide information about the structure of neutron star crusts and the properties of dense matter. Interpretation of the observational data requires an understanding of the nuclear reactions that heat and cool the crust during accretion, and define its nonequilibrium composition. We identify here in detail the typical nuclear reaction sequences down to a depth in the inner crust where the mass density is 2E12 g/cm^3 using a full nuclear reaction network for a range of initial compositions. The reaction sequences differ…
Transiently accreting neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries are generally believed to be heated up by nuclear reactions in accreted matter during hydrostatic compression. Detailed modeling of these reactions is required for the correct interpretation of observations. In this paper, we construct a simplified reaction network, which can be easily implemented and depends mainly on atomic mass tables as nuclear physics input. We show that it reproduces results of the detailed network by Lau et al. (2018) very well, if one applies the same mass model. However, the composition and the heating pow…
The mechanical properties of a neutron star crust, such as breaking strain and shear modulus, have implications for the detection of gravitational waves from a neutron star as well as bursts from Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs). These properties are calculated here for three different crustal compositions for a non-accreting neutron star that results from three different cooling histories, as well as for a pure iron crust. A simple shear is simulated using molecular dynamics to the crustal compositions by deforming the simulation box. The breaking strain and shear modulus are found to be simil…
The flow of a matter, accreting onto a magnetized neutron star, is accompanied by an electric current. The closing of the electric current occurs in the crust of a neutron stars in the polar region across the magnetic field. But the conductivity of the crust along the magnetic field greatly exceeds the conductivity across the field, so the current penetrates deep into the crust down up to the super conducting core. The magnetic field, generated by the accretion current, increases greatly with the depth of penetration due to the Hall conductivity of the crust is also much larger than the transv…
Nuclear burning near the surface of an accreting neutron star produces ashes that, when compressed deeper by further accretion, alter the star's thermal and compositional structure. Bygone nucleosynthesis can be constrained by the impact of compressed ashes on the thermal relaxation of quiescent neutron star transients. In particular, Urca cooling nuclei pairs in nuclear burning ashes, which cool the neutron star crust via neutrino emission from electron-capture/beta-decay cycles, provide signatures of prior nuclear burning over the ~century timescales it takes to accrete to the electron-captu…
Based on the formalism by Kaminker et al. (Astron. Astrophys. 343 (1999) 1009) we derive an analytic approximation for neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung emissivity due to scattering of electrons by atomic nuclei in the neutron star crust of any realistic composition. The emissivity is expressed through generalized Coulomb logarithm which we fit by introducing an effective potential of electron-nucleus scattering. In addition, we study the conditions at which the neutrino bremsstrahlung in the crust is affected by strong magnetic fields. The results can be applied for modelling of many phenomena in …
We discuss the effect of chemical separation as matter freezes at the base of the ocean of an accreting neutron star, and the subsequent enrichment of the ocean in light elements and inward transport of heat through convective mixing. We extend the steady-state results of Medin & Cumming 2011 to transiently accreting neutron stars, by considering the time-dependent cases of heating during accretion outbursts and cooling during quiescence. Convective mixing is extremely efficient, flattening the composition profile in about one convective turnover time (weeks to months at the base of the ocean)…
The heavy element ashes of rp-process hydrogen and helium burning in accreting neutron stars are compressed to high density where they freeze, forming the outer crust of the star. We calculate the chemical separation on freezing for a number of different nuclear mixtures resulting from a range of burning conditions for the rp-process. We confirm the generic result that light nuclei are preferentially retained in the liquid and heavy nuclei in the solid. This is in agreement with the previous study of a 17-component mixture of rp-process ashes by Horowitz et al. (2007), but extends that result …
The temperature in the crust of an accreting neutron star, which comprises its outermost kilometer, is set by heating from nuclear reactions at large densities, neutrino cooling, and heat transport from the interior. The heated crust has been thought to affect observable phenomena at shallower depths, such as thermonuclear bursts in the accreted envelope. Here we report that cycles of electron capture and its inverse, $β^-$ decay, involving neutron-rich nuclei at a typical depth of about 150 m, cool the outer neutron star crust by emitting neutrinos while also thermally decoupling the surface …
We show that convection driven by chemical separation can significantly affect the cooling curves of accreting neutron stars after they go into quiescence. We calculate the thermal relaxation of the neutron star ocean and crust including the thermal and compositional fluxes due to convection. After the inward propagating cooling wave reaches the base of the neutron star ocean, the ocean begins to freeze, driving chemical separation. The resulting convection transports heat inward, giving much faster cooling of the surface layers than found assuming the ocean cools passively. The light curves i…

The location of electron capture heat sources in the crust of accreting neutron stars depends on the masses of extremely neutron-rich nuclei. We present first results from a new implementation of the time-of-flight technique to measure nuclear masses of rare isotopes at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The masses of 16 neutron-rich nuclei in the scandium -- nickel range were determined simultaneously, improving the accuracy compared to previous data in 12 cases. The masses of $^{61}${V}, $^{63}${Cr}, $^{66}${Mn}, and $^{74}${Ni} were measured for the first time with mass exce…
We investigate X-ray bursts during the thermal evolution of an accreting neutron star which corresponds to the X-ray burster GS\ 1826-24. Physical quantities of the neutron star are included using an equation of state below and above the nuclear matter density. We adopt an equation of state and construct an approximate network that saves the computational time and calculates nuclear energy generation rates accompanying the abundance evolutions. The mass and radius of the neutron star are got by solving the stellar evolution equations from the center to the surface which involve necessary infor…
In this thesis we address the question of {\em the evolution of the magnetic field in neutron stars}. There has been sufficient observational indication suggesting a causal connection between the binary history of neutron stars and the evolution of their magnetic field. In particular, it is believed that the generation of the low-field millisecond pulsars is a consequence of the processing of normal high-field neutron stars in binary systems. Therefore, in this thesis we try to understand the mechanism of field evolution in neutron stars that are members of binary systems with an aim to unders…
Fusion of very neutron rich nuclei may be important to determine the composition and heating of the crust of accreting neutron stars. Fusion cross sections are calculated using time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory coupled with density-constrained Hartree-Fock calculations to deduce an effective potential. Systems studied include 16O+16O, 16O+24O, 24O+24O, 12C+16O, and 12C+24O. We find remarkable agreement with experimental cross sections for the fusion of stable nuclei. Our simulations use the SLy4 Skyrme force that has been previously fit to the properties of stable nuclei, and no parameters ha…
A systematic search for multicomponent crystal structures is carried out for five different ternary systems of nuclei in a polarizable background of electrons, representative of accreted neutron star crusts and some white dwarfs. Candidate structures are "bred" by a genetic algorithm, and optimized at constant pressure under the assumption of linear response (Thomas-Fermi) charge screening. Subsequent phase equilibria calculations reveal eight distinct crystal structures in the $T=0$ bulk phase diagrams, five of which are complicated multinary structures not before predicted in the context of …
Nucleosynthesis in the oceans of accreting neutron stars can produce novel mixtures of nuclides, whose composition is dependent on the exact astrophysical conditions. Many simulations have now been done to determine the nucleosynthesis products in the ocean, but the phase separation at the base of the ocean, which determines the composition of the crust, has not been as well studied. In this work, we simulate the phase separation of a composition, which was predicted to produce a crust enriched in light nuclei, in contrast with past work which predicts that crust is enriched in heavy nuclei. W…
Numerous nuclear reactions in the crust of accreting neutron stars are strongly affected by dense plasma environment. Simulations of superbursts, deep crustal heating and other nuclear burning phenomena in neutron stars require astrophysical S-factors for these reactions (as a function of center-of-mass energy E of colliding nuclei). A large database of S-factors is created for about 5000 non-resonant fusion reactions involving stable and unstable isotopes of Be, B, C, N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg, and Si. It extends the previous database of about 1000 reactions involving isotopes of C, O, Ne, and Mg. …
Thermal evolution of neutron stars is known to depend on the properties of superdense matter in neutron star cores. We suggest a statistical analysis of isolated cooling middle-aged neutron stars and old transiently accreting quasi-stationary neutron stars warmed up by deep crustal heating in low-mass X-ray binaries. The method is based on simulations of the evolution of stars of different masses and on averaging the results over respective mass distributions. This gives theoretical distributions of isolated neutron stars in the surface temperature--age plane and of accreting stars in the phot…
Accurate phase diagrams of multicomponent plasmas are required for the modeling of dense stellar plasmas, such as those found in the cores of white dwarf stars and the crusts of neutron stars. Those phase diagrams have been computed using a variety of standard techniques, which suffer from physical and computational limitations. Here, we present an efficient and accurate method that overcomes the drawbacks of previously used approaches. In particular, finite-size effects are avoided as each phase is calculated separately; the plasma electrons and volume changes are explicitly taken into accoun…
We present results of targeted searches for signatures of non-radial oscillation modes (such as r- and g-modes) in neutron stars using {\it RXTE} data from several accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXPs). We search for potentially coherent signals in the neutron star rest frame by first removing the phase delays associated with the star's binary motion and computing FFT power spectra of continuous light curves with up to $2^{30}$ time bins. We search a range of frequencies in which both r- and g-modes are theoretically expected to reside. Using data from the discovery outburst of the 435 H…
The gravitational radiation has been proposed a long time before, as an explanation for the observed relatively low spin frequencies of young neutron stars and of accreting neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries as well. In the present work we studied the effects of the neutron star equation of state on the r-mode instability window of rotating neutron stars. Firstly, we employed a set of analytical solution of the Tolman-Oppemheimer-Volkoff equations with special emphasis on the Tolman VII solution. In particular, we tried to clarify the effects of the bulk neutron star properties (mass, ra…
Since a large population of massive O/B stars and putative neutron stars (NSs) located in the vicinity of the Galactic center (GC), intermediate-mass X-ray binaries (IMXBs) constituted by a NS and a B-type star probably exist here. We investigate the evolutions of accreting NSs in IMXBs (similar to M82 X-2) with a $\sim5.2M_\odot$ companion, and orbit period $\simeq2.53$ day. By adopting an mildly super-Eddington rate $\dot{M}=6\times10^{-8}M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ for the early Case B Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF) accretion, we find only in accreting NSs with quite elastic crusts (slippage factor …
The observation of several neutron stars in the center of supernova remnants and with significantly lower values of the dipolar magnetic field than the average radio-pulsar population has motivated a lively debate about their formation and origin, with controversial interpretations. A possible explanation requires the slow rotation of the proto-neutron star at birth, which is unable to amplify its magnetic field to typical pulsar levels. An alternative possibility, the hidden magnetic field scenario, considers the accretion of the fallback of the supernova debris onto the neutron star as respo…
We describe how the nonlinear development of the R mode instability of neutron stars influences spin up to millisecond periods via accretion. Our arguments are based on nearly-resonant interactions of the R mode with pairs of "daughter modes". The amplitude of the R mode saturates at the lowest value for which parametric instability leads to significant excitation of a particular pair of daughters. The lower bound on this limiting amplitude is proportional to the damping rate of the daughter modes that are excited parametrically. Based on this picture, we show that if modes damp because of dis…
