Ion beam therapy has become a frequently applied form of cancer therapy over the last years. The advantage of ion beam therapy over conventional radiotherapy using photons is the strongly localized dose deposition, leading to a reduction of dose applied to surrounding healthy tissue. Currently, treatment planning for proton therapy is based on X-ray computed tomography, which entails certain sources of inaccuracy in alculation of the stopping power (SP). A more precise method to acquire the SP is to directly use high energy protons (or other ions such as carbon) and perform proton computed tomography (pCT). With this method, the ions are tracked prior to entering and after leaving the patient and finally their residual energy is measured at the very end. Therefore, an ion imaging demonstrator, comprising a tracking telescope made from double-sided silicon strip detectors and a range telescope as a residual energy detector, was set up. First measurements with this setup were performed at beam tests at MedAustron, a center for ion therapy and research in \mbox{Wiener Neustadt}, \mbox{Austria}. The facility provides three rooms for cancer treatment with proton beams as well as one which is dedicated to non-clinical research. This contribution describes the principle of ion imaging with proton beams in general as well as the design of the experimental setup. Moreover, first results from simulations and recent beam tests as well as ideas for future developments will be presented.
The Medipix3, a hybrid pixel detector with a silicon sensor, has been evaluated as a beam instrumentation device with proton and carbon ion measurements in the non-clinical research room (IR1) of MedAustron Ion Therapy Center. Protons energies are varied from 62.4 to 800 MeV with $10^{4}$ to $10^{8}$ protons per second impinging on the detector surface. For carbon ions, energies are varied from 120 to 400 MeV/amu with $10^{7}$ to $10^{8}$ carbon ions per second. Measurements include simultaneous high resolution, beam profile and beam intensity with various beam parameters at up to 1000 FPS (fr…
We report on an hybrid in-beam PET and prompt-gamma Compton imaging system aimed at quasi real-time ion-range verification in proton-therapy treatments. Proof-of-concept experiments were carried out at the radiobiology beam line of the CNA cyclotron facility using a set of two synchronous Compton imagers and different target materials. The time structure of the 18~MeV proton beam was shaped with a series of beam-on and beam-off intervals, thereby mimicking a pulsed proton beam on a long time scale. During beam-on intervals, Compton imaging was performed utilizing the high energy $γ$-rays promp…
The design, construction, and preliminary testing of a second generation proton CT scanner is presented. All current treatment planning systems at proton therapy centers use X-ray CT as the primary imaging modality for treatment planning to calculate doses to tumor and healthy tissues. One of the limitations of X-ray CT is in the conversion of X-ray attenuation coefficients to relative (proton) stopping powers, or RSP. This results in more proton range uncertainty, larger target volumes and therefore, more dose to healthy tissues. To help improve this, we present a novel scanner capable of hig…
The distribution of the prompt gamma emissions induced by proton interactions in a target material carries information concerning the proton range and target composition. In order to image prompt gamma we present different approaches. The first approach is based on knife-edge collimator utilized in tandem with a compact PET type detector in order to verify proton range by measuring the depth distribution of prompt gamma relying on Compton scattered events. A second approach aims at unambiguously identifying the presence of protons in a region of interest by introducing a bio-compatible fiducia…
The primary secondary particles from the spallation target of the China Spallation Neutron Source are mainly gammas and neutrons, which are related to the distribution of the incident proton. The reconstruction of proton beam spot could be implemented based on the distribution of secondary particles. The methods of pinhole imaging and Compton imaging are developed by measuring the gamma distribution based on the pixelated detector. The secondary gammas could be detected by the pixelated gamma detector directly. The neutron can be identified by detecting the characteristic (478 keV) $γ$-rays fr…
Fast neutron detection is often based on the neutron-proton elastic scattering reaction: the ionization caused by recoil protons in a hydrogenous material constitutes the basic information for the design and development of a class of neutron detectors. Although experimental techniques have continuously improved, proton-recoil track imaging remains still at the frontier of n-detection systems, due to the high photon sensitivity required. Several state-of-the-art approaches for neutron tracking by using n-p single and double scattering - referred to as Recoil Proton Track Imaging (RPTI) - can be…
Proton therapy is nowadays becoming a wide spread clinical practice in cancer therapy and sophisticated treatment planning systems are routinely used to exploit at best the ballistic properties of charged particles. The information on the quality of the beams and the range of the protons is a key issue for the optimization of the treatment. For this purpose, proton radiography can be used in proton therapy to obtain direct information on the range of the protons, on the average density of the tissues for treatment planning optimization and to perform imaging with negligible dose to the patient…
Plastic organic scintillators have been tailored in composition to achieve ultra-fast temporal response, thereby enabling the design and development of fast neutron detection systems with high timing resolution. Eljen Technology's plastic organic scintillators -- EJ-230, EJ-232, and EJ-232Q -- are prospective candidates for use in emerging neutron imaging systems, where fast timing is paramount. To support the neutron response characterization of these materials, the relative proton light yields of EJ-230, EJ-232, and EJ-232Q were measured at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National…
Proton beam therapy can potentially offer improved treatment for cancers of the head and neck and in paediatric patients. There has been a sharp uptake of proton beam therapy in recent years as improved delivery techniques and patient benefits are observed. However, treatments are currently planned using conventional x-ray CT images due to the absence of devices able to perform high quality proton computed tomography (pCT) under realistic clinical conditions. A new plastic-scintillator-based range telescope concept, named ASTRA, is proposed here to measure the proton's energy loss in a pCT sys…
$Objective$. Obtaining the intrinsic dose distributions in particle therapy is a challenging problem that needs to be addressed by imaging algorithms to take advantage of secondary particle detectors. In this work, we investigate the utility of deep learning methods for achieving direct mapping from detector data to the intrinsic dose distribution. $Approach$. We performed Monte Carlo simulations using GATE/Geant4 10.4 simulation toolkits to generate a dataset using human CT phantom irradiated with high-energy protons and imaged with compact in-beam PET for realistic beam delivery in a single-…
An extensive comparison of the path uncertainty in single particle tracking systems for ion imaging was carried out based on Monte Carlo simulations. The spatial resolution as function of system parameters such as geometry, detector properties and the energy of proton and helium beams was investigated to serve as a guideline for hardware developments. Primary particle paths were sampled within a water volume and compared to the most likely path estimate obtained from detector measurements, yielding a depth-dependent uncertainty envelope. The maximum uncertainty along this curve was converted t…

GLACIER (Giant Liquid Argon Charge Imaging ExpeRiment) is a large underground observatory for proton decay search, neutrino astrophysics and CP-violation studies in the lepton sector. Possible underground sites are studied within the FP7 LAGUNA project (Europe) and along the JPARC neutrino beam in collaboration with KEK (Japan). The concept is scalable to very large masses.
In ion cancer therapy, high-intensity ion beams are used to treat tumors by taking advantage of the Bragg-Peak. Typical ion therapy centers use particle rates up to $10^{10}$ ions/second for treatment. On the other hand, such intensities are often too high when using these beamlines for particle physics experiments or as a test-beam environment in general. The project presented here aims to develop a beam position and intensity monitor, to cover a wide intensity range from a few Hz up to GHz rates, as used in clinical settings. Silicon carbide (SiC) is an attractive detector material for this …
We have demonstrated that GaN Schottky diodes can be used for high energy (64.8 MeV) proton detection. Such proton beams are used for tumor treatment, for which accurate and radiation resistant detectors are needed. Schottky diodes have been measured to be highly sensitive to protons, to have a linear response with beam intensity and fast enough for the application. Some photoconductive gain was found in the diode leading to a good compromise between responsivity and response time. The imaging capability of GaN diodes in proton detection is also demonstrated.
Proton radiography is a new scatheless diagnostic tool, and which provides a potential development direction for advanced hydrotesting. Recently a low energy proton radiography system has been developed at CAEP. This system has been designed to use 11MeV proton beam to radiograph thin static objects. This system consists of a proton cyclotron coupled to an imaging beamline. The design features and commissioning results of this radiography system are presented.
Recent progress in the development of novel organic scintillators necessitates modern characterization capabilities. As the primary means of energy deposition by neutrons in these materials is n-p elastic scattering, knowledge of the proton light yield is paramount. This work establishes a new model-independent method to continuously measure proton light yield in organic scintillators over a broad energy range. Using a deuteron breakup neutron source at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and an array of organic scintillators, the proton light yield of EJ-301 and EJ-…
Two detection systems based on optical readout were developed: a. Integrative optical detector A 2nd generation of Time-Resolved Integrative Optical Neutron (TRION) detector was developed. It is based on an integrative optical technique, which permits fast-neutron energy-resolved imaging via time-gated optical readout. This mode of operation allows loss-free operation at very high neutron-flux intensities. The TRION neutron imaging system can be regarded as a stroboscopic photography of neutrons arriving at the detector on a few-ns time scale. As this spectroscopic capability is based on the T…
Compact neutron imagers using double-scatter kinematic reconstruction are being designed for localization and characterization of special nuclear material. These neutron imaging systems rely on scintillators with a rapid prompt temporal response as the detection medium. As n-p elastic scattering is the primary mechanism for light generation by fast neutron interactions in organic scintillators, proton light yield data are needed for accurate assessment of scintillator performance. The proton light yield of a series of commercial fast plastic organic scintillators---EJ-200, EJ-204, and EJ-208--…
CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass) is a multi-flight balloon mission designed to collect direct data on the elemental composition and individual energy spectra of cosmic rays. Two instrument suites have been built to be flown alternately on a yearly base. The tungsten/Sci-Fi imaging calorimeter for the second flight, scheduled for December 2005, was calibrated with electron and proton beams at CERN. A calibration procedure based on the study of the longitudinal shower profile is described and preliminary results of the beam test are presented.
The development of detectors that provide high resolution in four dimensions has attracted wide-spread interest in the scientific community for several applications in high-energy physics, nuclear physics, medical imaging, mass spectroscopy as well as quantum information. In addition to high time resolution and thanks to the AC-coupling of the electrodes, LGAD silicon sensors can provide high resolution in the measurement of spatial coordinates of an incident minimum ionizing particle. Such AC-coupled LGADs, also known as AC-LGADs, are therefore considered as candidates for future detectors to…
We have developed an electron-tracking Compton camera (ETCC) for use in next-generation MeV gamma ray telescopes. An ETCC consists of a gaseous time projection chamber (TPC) and pixel scintillator arrays (PSAs). Since the TPC measures the three dimensional tracks of Compton-recoil electrons, the ETCC can completely reconstruct the incident gamma rays. Moreover, the ETCC demonstrates efficient background rejection power in Compton-kinematics tests, identifies particle from the energy deposit rate (dE/dX) registered in the TPC, and provides high quality imaging by completely reconstructing the C…
Technological developments in high resolution time-of-flight neutron detectors have raised the prospect of tomographic reconstruction of elastic strain fields from Bragg-edge strain images. This approach holds the potential to provide a unique window into the full triaxial stress field within solid samples. While general tomographic reconstruction from these images has been shown to be ill-posed, an injective link between measurements and boundary deformations exists for systems subject to in situ applied loads in the absence of residual stress. Recent work has provided an algorithm to achieve…
