The superconducting transmon qubit is a leading platform for quantum computing and quantum science. Building large, useful quantum systems based on transmon qubits will require significant improvements in qubit relaxation and coherence times, which are orders of magnitude shorter than limits imposed by bulk properties of the constituent materials. This indicates that relaxation likely originates from uncontrolled surfaces, interfaces, and contaminants. Previous efforts to improve qubit lifetimes have focused primarily on designs that minimize contributions from surfaces. However, significant improvements in the lifetime of two-dimensional transmon qubits have remained elusive for several years. Here, we fabricate two-dimensional transmon qubits that have both lifetimes and coherence times with dynamical decoupling exceeding 0.3 milliseconds by replacing niobium with tantalum in the device. We have observed increased lifetimes for seventeen devices, indicating that these material improvements are robust, paving the way for higher gate fidelities in multi-qubit processors.
By using the dry etching process of tantalum (Ta) film, we had obtained transmon qubit with the best lifetime (T1) 503 us, suggesting that the dry etching process can be adopted in the following multi-qubit fabrication with Ta film. We also compared the relaxation and coherence times of transmons made with different materials (Ta, Nb and Al) with the same design and fabrication processes of Josephson junction, we found that samples prepared with Ta film had the best performance, followed by those with Al film and Nb film. We inferred that the reason for this difference was due to the different…
Quasiparticle excitations adversely affect the performance of superconducting devices in a wide range of applications. They limit the sensitivity of photon detectors in astronomy, the accuracy of current sources in metrology, the cooling power of micro-refrigerators, and could break the topological protection of Majorana qubits. In superconducting circuits for quantum information processing, tunneling of quasiparticles across Josephson junctions constitutes a decoherence mechanism. As relaxation and pure dephasing times of transmon-type charge qubits now reach 100 microseconds, understanding w…

There are several important solid-state systems, such as defects in solids, superconducting circuits and molecular qubits, for attractive candidates of quantum computations. Molecular qubits, which benefit from the power of chemistry for the tailored and inexpensive synthesis of new systems, face the challenge from decoherence effect. The decoherence effect is due to the molecular qubits' inevitable interactions to their environment. Strategies to overcome decoherence effect have been developed, such as designing a nuclear spin free environment and working at atomic clock transitions. These ch…
Significant advances in coherence have made superconducting quantum circuits a viable platform for fault-tolerant quantum computing. To further extend capabilities, highly coherent quantum systems could act as quantum memories for these circuits. A useful quantum memory must be rapidly addressable by qubits, while maintaining superior coherence. We demonstrate a novel superconducting microwave cavity architecture that is highly robust against major sources of loss that are encountered in the engineering of circuit QED systems. The architecture allows for near-millisecond storage of quantum sta…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple and efficient scheme for photonic communication between two remote superconducting modules. Each module consists of a random access quantum information processor with eight-qubit multimode memory and a single flux tunable transmon. The two processor chips are connected through a one-meter long coaxial cable that is coupled to a dedicated "communication" resonator on each chip. The two communication resonators hybridize with a mode of the cable to form a dark "communication mode" that is highly immune to decay in the coaxial cable. We modulate …
The elimination of defects from SiC has facilitated its move to the forefront of the optoelectronics and power-electronics industries. Nonetheless, because the electronic states of SiC defects can have sharp optical and spin transitions, they are increasingly recognized as a valuable resource for quantum-information and nanoscale-sensing applications. Here, we show that individual electron spin states in highly purified monocrystalline 4H-SiC can be isolated and coherently controlled. Bound to neutral divacancy defects, these states exhibit exceptionally long ensemble Hahn-echo spin coherence,…
Electron charge qubits are compelling candidates for solid-state quantum computing because of their inherent simplicity in qubit design, fabrication, control, and readout. However, all existing electron charge qubits, built upon conventional semiconductors and superconductors, suffer from severe charge noise that limits the coherence time to the order of 1 microsecond. Here, we report our experimental realization of ultralong-coherence electron charge qubits, based upon isolated single electrons trapped on an ultraclean solid neon surface in vacuum. Quantum information is encoded in the motion…

We consider the effect of phase backaction on the correlator $\langle I(t)\, I(t+τ)\rangle$ for the output signal $I(t)$ from continuous measurement of a qubit. We demonstrate that the interplay between informational and phase backactions in the presence of Rabi oscillations can lead to the correlator becoming larger than 1, even though $|\langle I\rangle|\leq 1$. The correlators can be calculated using the generalized "collapse recipe" which we validate using the quantum Bayesian formalism. The recipe can be further generalized to the case of multi-time correlators and arbitrary number of det…

We report on a device that integrates eight superconducting transmon qubits in lambda/4 superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators fed from a common feedline. Using this multiplexing architecture, each resonator and qubit can be addressed individually thus reducing the required hardware resources and allowing their individual characterisation by spectroscopic methods. The measured device parameters agree with the designed values and the resonators and qubits exhibit excellent coherence properties and strong coupling, with the qubit relaxation rate dominated by the Purcell effect when brough…
We have integrated single and coupled superconducting transmon qubits into flip-chip modules. Each module consists of two chips -- one quantum chip and one control chip -- that are bump-bonded together. We demonstrate time-averaged coherence times exceeding $90\,μs$, single-qubit gate fidelities exceeding $99.9\%$, and two-qubit gate fidelities above $98.6\%$. We also present device design methods and discuss the sensitivity of device parameters to variation in interchip spacing. Notably, the additional flip-chip fabrication steps do not degrade the qubit performance compared to our baseline s…
Although single and two-qubit gates are sufficient for universal quantum computation, single-shot three-qubit gates greatly simplify quantum error correction schemes and algorithms. We design fast, high-fidelity three-qubit entangling gates based on microwave pulses for transmon qubits coupled through a superconducting resonator. We show that when interqubit frequency differences are comparable to single-qubit anharmonicities, errors occur primarily through a single unwanted transition. This feature enables the design of fast three-qubit gates based on simple analytical pulse shapes that are e…
We introduce a hybrid qubit based on a semiconductor nanowire with an epitaxially grown superconductor layer. Josephson energy of the transmon-like device ("gatemon") is controlled by an electrostatic gate that depletes carriers in a semiconducting weak link region. Strong coupling to an on-chip microwave cavity and coherent qubit control via gate voltage pulses is demonstrated, yielding reasonably long relaxation times (0.8 μs) and dephasing times (1 μs), exceeding gate operation times by two orders of magnitude, in these first-generation devices. Because qubit control relies on voltages rath…
Phase estimation algorithms are key protocols in quantum information processing. Besides applications in quantum computing, they can also be employed in metrology as they allow for fast extraction of information stored in the quantum state of a system. Here, we implement two suitably modified phase estimation procedures, the Kitaev- and the semiclassical Fourier-transform algorithms, using an artificial atom realized with a superconducting transmon circuit. We demonstrate that both algorithms yield a flux sensitivity exceeding the classical shot-noise limit of the device, allowing one to appro…
We investigate an acoustical analog of circuit quantum electrodynamics that facilitates compact high-Q (${>}20,000$) microwave-frequency cavities with dense spectra. We fabricate and characterize a device that comprises a flux tunable transmon coupled to a $300\,\mathrm{μm}$ long surface acoustic wave resonator. For some modes, the qubit-cavity coupling reaches $6.5\,\mathrm{MHz}$, exceeding the cavity loss rate ($200\,\mathrm{kHz}$), qubit linewidth ($1.1\,\mathrm{MHz}$), and the cavity free spectral range ($4.8\,\mathrm{MHz}$), placing the device in both the strong coupling and strong multim…

We demonstrate a superconducting artificial atom with strong unidirectional coupling to a microwave photonic waveguide. Our artificial atom is realized by coupling a transmon qubit to the waveguide at two spatially separated points with time-modulated interactions. Direction-sensitive interference arising from the parametric couplings in our scheme results in a non-reciprocal response, where we measure a forward/backward ratio of spontaneous emission exceeding 100. We verify the quantum nonlinear behavior of this artificial chiral atom by measuring the resonance fluorescence spectrum under a s…

Resonant transverse driving of a two-level system as viewed in the rotating frame couples two degenerate states at the Rabi frequency, an amazing equivalence that emerges in quantum mechanics. While spectacularly successful at controlling natural and artificial quantum systems, certain limitations may arise (e.g., the achievable gate speed) due to non-idealities like the counter-rotating term. Here, we explore a complementary approach to quantum control based on non-resonant, non-adiabatic driving of a longitudinal parameter in the presence of a fixed transverse coupling. We introduce a superc…
The long-lived, efficient storage and retrieval of a qubit encoded on a photon is an important ingredient for future quantum networks. Although systems with intrinsically long coherence times have been demonstrated, the combination with an efficient light-matter interface remains an outstanding challenge. In fact, the coherence times of memories for photonic qubits are currently limited to a few milliseconds. Here we report on a qubit memory based on a single atom coupled to a high-finesse optical resonator. By mapping and remapping the qubit between a basis used for light-matter interfacing a…
We study the feasibility of reaching the ultrastrong (USC) and deep-strong coupling (DSC) regimes of light-matter interaction, in particular at resonance condition, with a superconducting charge qubit, also known as Cooper-Pair box (CPB). We numerically show that by shunting the charge qubit with a high-impedance LC-circuit, one can maximally reach both USC and DSC regimes exceeding the classical upper bound $|g|\leq \sqrt{ω_qω_r}/2$ between two harmonic systems with frequencies $ω_q$ and $ω_r$. As an application, we propose a hybrid system consisting of two CPBs ultrastrongly coupled to an LC…
