We analyse various microscopic properties of the nematic fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHN) in the thermodynamic limit, and present necessary conditions required of the microscopic Hamiltonians for the nematic FQHE to be robust. Analytical expressions for the degenerate ground state manifold, ground state energies, and gapless nematic modes are given in compact forms with the input interaction and the corresponding ground state structure factors. We relate the long wavelength limit of the neutral excitations to the guiding center metric deformation, and show explicitly the family of trial wavefunctions for the nematic modes with spatially varying nematic order near the quantum critical point. For short range interactions, the dynamics of the FQHN is completely determined by the long wavelength part of the ground state structure factor. The special case of the FQHN at $ν=1/3$ is discussed with new theoretical insights from the Haffnian parent Hamiltonian, leading to a number of rigorous statements and experimental implications.
At small momenta, the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman (GMP) mode in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect can be identified with gapped nematic fluctuations in the isotropic FQH liquid. This correspondence would be exact as the GMP mode softens upon approach to the putative point of a quantum phase transition to a FQH nematic. Motivated by these considerations as well as by suggestive evidence of an FQH nematic in tilted field experiments, we have sought evidence of such a nematic FQHE in a microscopic model of interacting electrons in the lowest Landau level at filling factor 1/3. Using a family…
Two-dimensional multi-valley electronic systems in which the dispersion of individual pockets has low symmetry give rise to quantum Hall ferroelectric and nematic states in the presence of strong quantising magnetic fields. We investigate local signatures of these states arising near impurities that can be probed via Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM) spectroscopy. For quantum Hall ferroelectrics, we demonstrate a direct relation between the dipole moment measured at impurity bound states and the ideal bulk dipole moment obtained from the modern theory of polarisation. We also study the many…
Due to its extremely rich phase diagram, the two-dimensional electron gas exposed to perpendicular magnetic field has been the subject of intense and sustained study. One particularly interesting problem in this system is that of the half-filled Landau level, where the Fermi sea of composite fermions, a fractional quantum Hall state arising from a pairing instability of the composite fermions, and the quantum Hall nematic were observed in the half-filled $N=0$, $N=1$, and $N \geq 2$ Landau levels, respectively. Thus different ground states developed in different half-filled Landau levels. This…
We perform a detailed comparison of the Dirac composite fermion and the recently proposed bimetric theory for a quantum Hall Jain states near half filling. By tuning the composite Fermi liquid to the vicinity of a nematic phase transition, we find that the two theories are equivalent to each other. We verify that the single mode approximation for the response functions and the static structure factor becomes reliable near the phase transition. We show that the dispersion relation of the nematic mode near the phase transition can be obtained from the Dirac brackets between the components of the…
Two-dimensional electron gases in strong magnetic fields provide a canonical platform for realizing a variety of electronic ordering phenomena. Here we review the physics of one intriguing class of interaction-driven quantum Hall states: quantum Hall valley nematics. These phases of matter emerge when the formation of a topologically insulating quantum Hall state is accompanied by the spontaneous breaking of a point-group symmetry that combines a spatial rotation with a permutation of valley indices. The resulting orientational order is particularly sensitive to quenched disorder, while quantu…
We theoretically study the correlated insulator states, quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) states, and field-induced topological transitions between different correlated states in twisted multilayer graphene systems. Taking twisted bilayer-monolayer graphene and twisted double-bilayer graphene as examples, we show that both systems stay in spin polarized, $C_{3z}$-broken insulator states with zero Chern number at 1/2 filling of the flat bands under finite displacement fields. In some cases these spin polarized, nematic insulator states are in the quantum valley Hall phase by virtue of the nontrivial…
We study broken symmetry states at integer Landau level fillings in multivalley quantum Hall systems whose low energy dispersions are anisotropic. When the Fermi surface of individual pockets lacks twofold rotational symmetry, like in Bismuth (111) and in Sn$_{1-x}$Pb$_x$Se (001) surfaces, interactions tend to drive the formation of quantum Hall ferroelectric states. We demonstrate that the dipole moment in these states has an intimate relation to the Fermi surface geometry of the parent metal. In quantum Hall nematic states, like those arising in AlAs quantum wells, we demonstrate the existen…
We study the phase diagram of a model quantum spin Hall system as a function of band inversion and band-coupling strength, demonstrating that when band hybridization is weak, an interaction-induced nematic insulator state emerges over a wide range of band inversion. This property is a consequence of the long-range Coulomb interaction, which favors interband phase coherence that is weakly dependent on momentum and therefore frustrated by the single-particle Hamiltonian at the band inversion point. For weak band hybridization, interactions convert the continuous gap closing topological phase tra…
Half-filled Landau levels form a zoo of strongly correlated phases. These include non-Fermi liquids (NFL), fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, nematic phases, and FQH nematic phases. This diversity poses the question: what keeps the balance between the seemingly unrelated phases? The answer is elusive because the Halperin-Lee-Read (HLR) description that offers a natural departure point is inherent strongly coupled. But the observed nematic phases suggest nematic fluctuations play an important role. To study this possibility, we apply a recently formulated controlled double expansion approach…
In spite of its ubiquity in strongly correlated systems, the competition of paired and nematic ground states remains poorly understood. Recently such a competition was reported in the two-dimensional electron gas at filling factor $ν=5/2$. At this filling factor a pressure-induced quantum phase transition was observed from the paired fractional quantum Hall state to the quantum Hall nematic. Here we show that the pressure induced paired-to-nematic transition also develops at $ν=7/2$, demonstrating therefore this transition in both spin branches of the second orbital Landau level. However, we f…
Under hydrostatic pressure, the ground state of a two-dimensional electron gas at $ν=5/2$ changes from a fractional quantum Hall state to the stripe phase. By measuring the energy gap of the fractional quantum Hall state and of the onset temperature of the stripe phase we mapped out a phase diagram of these competing phases in the pressure-temperature plane. Our data highlight the dichotomy of two descriptions of the half-filled Landau level near the quantum critical point: one based on electrons and another on composite fermions.
We consider domain walls in nematic quantum Hall ferromagnets predicted to form in multivalley semiconductors, recently probed by scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments on Bi(111) surfaces. We show that the domain wall properties depend sensitively on the filling factor $ν$ of the underlying (integer) quantum Hall states. For $ν=1$ and in the absence of impurity scattering we argue that the wall hosts a single-channel Luttinger liquid whose gaplessness is a consequence of valley and charge conservation. For $ν=2$, it supports a two-channel Luttinger liquid, which for sufficiently strong in…
We derive the low-energy theory of semi-quantized quantum Hall states, a recently observed class of gapless bilayer fractional quantum Hall states. Our theory shows these states to feature gapless quasiparticles of fractional charge coupled to an emergent Chern-Simons gauge field. These gapless quasiparticles can be understood as composites of electrons and Laughlin-like quasiparticles. We show that semi-quantized quantum Hall states exhibit perfect interlayer drag, host non-Fermi liquid physics, and serve as versatile parent states for fully gapped topological phases hosting anyonic excitatio…
We present a theory of the isotropic-nematic quantum phase transition in the composite Fermi liquid arising in half-filled Landau levels. We show that the quantum phase transition between the isotropic and the nematic phase is triggered by an attractive quadrupolar interaction between electrons, as in the case of conventional Fermi liquids. We derive the theory of the nematic state and of the phase transition. This theory is based on the flux attachment procedure which maps an electron liquid in half-filled Landau levels into the composite Fermi liquid close to a nematic transition. We show th…

The momentum dependence of the nematic order parameter is an important ingredient in the microscopic description of iron-based high-temperature superconductors. While recent reports on FeSe indicate that the nematic order parameter changes sign between electron and hole bands, detailed knowledge is still missing for other compounds. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with uniaxial strain tuning, we measure the nematic band splitting in both FeSe and BaFe$_2$As$_2$ without interference from either twinning or magnetic order. We find that the nematic order parameter exhi…

The use of ultra-low temperature cooling and of high hydrostatic pressure techniques has significantly expanded our understanding of the two-dimensional electron gas confined to GaAs/AlGaAs structures. This chapter reviews a selected set of experiments employing these specialized techniques in the study of the fractional quantum Hall states and of the charged ordered phases, such as the reentrant integer quantum Hall states and the quantum Hall nematic. Topics discussed include a successful cooling technique used, novel odd denominator fractional quantum Hall states, new transport results on e…
We construct a low energy effective theory of anisotropic fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states. We develop a formalism similar to that used in the bi-metric approach to massive gravity, and apply it to describe abelian anisotropic FQH states in the presence of external electromagnetic and geometric backgrounds. We derive a relationship between the shift, the Hall viscosity, and a new quantized coupling to anisotropy, which we term "anisospin". We verify this relationship by numerically computing the Hall viscosity for a variety of anisotropic quantum Hall states using the density matrix renorm…
Unveiling a nematic quantum critical point in multi-orbital systems
Ultrafast techniques have emerged as promising methods to study and control quantum materials. To maintain the quantum nature of the systems under study, excess heating must be avoided. In this work, we demonstrate a method that employs the nonequilibrium laser excitation of planar stretching optical phonons in tetragonal systems to quench an electronic nematic state across a quantum phase transition. Appropriately tuned off-resonant pulses can perform a quantum quench of the system either into the nematic phase (red detuning) or out of it (blue detuning). The nonlinear coupling of this phonon…
We propose a Ginzburg-Landau theory for a large and important part of the abelian quantum Hall hierarchy, including the prominently observed Jain sequences. By a generalized "flux attachment" construction we extend the Ginzburg-Landau-Chern-Simons composite boson theory to states obtained by both quasielectron and quasihole condensation, and express the corresponding wave functions as correlators in conformal field theories. This yields a precise identification of the relativistic scalar fields entering these correlators in terms of the original electron field.
