We study a canonical many-body-localized (MBL) system with power-law-correlated disorders: $s=\frac{1}{2}$ spin chain in a random magnetic field. The power-law-correlated disorder can control the critical regime between the MBL and thermal (ergodic) phases by varying its exponent, and it let us investigate the MBL transitions in detail. Static-eigenstate and dynamic properties of MBL are studied by numerical methods for systems with various long-range correlations. By using energy-resolved distribution of the participation ratio (PR) and calculating some physical quantities related to localization length, we show that the MBL transition exhibits certain universal behavior. We also investigate entanglement properties for the static and dynamics system. These studies elucidate the impact of power-law-correlated disorders in the canonical MBL system.
We consider an XXZ spin-1/2 chain in the presence of several types of disorder that do not break the XY symmetry of the system. We calculate the complete asymptotic form of the spin-correlation functions at zero temperature at the transition between liquid and disordered phase that occurs for a special value of anisotropy in the limit of small disorder. Apart from a universal power law decay of correlations, we find additional logarithmic corrections due to marginally irrelevant operator of disorder.
There is a counter-intuitive expectation proposed by Huse {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 88}, 014206 (2013)], and Chandran {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. B 89,144201 (2014)]: Localization protects quantum order of groundstate even in high excited eigenstates. In this work, we numerically investigate the localization protection for symmetry-protected-topological (SPT) order by considering a modified XXZ spin model, related to an interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. We systematically study how Many-body-localization (MBL) protects SPT for different disorder types and different forms of interac…
The dynamics of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 quantum XXZ model with random fields is investigated by the recurrence relations method. When the fields satisfy the bimodal distribution, the system shows a crossover between a collective-mode behavior and a central-peak one with increasing field while the anisotropy parameter Δ is small; a disordered behavior replaces the crossover as Δ increases. For the cases of Gaussian and double-Gaussian distributions, when the standard deviation is small, the results are similar to that of the bimodal distribution; while the standard deviation is large enoug…
The classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet with uniaxial exchange anisotropy, the XXZ model, and competing planar single-ion anisotropy in a magnetic field on a simple cubic lattice is studied with the help of extensive Monte Carlo simulations. The biconical (supersolid) phase, bordering the antiferromagnetic and spin-flop phases, is found to become thermally unstable well below the onset of the disordered, paramagnetic phase, leading to interesting multicritical points.
We study the Rényi entanglement entropy and the Shannon mutual information for a class of spin-1/2 quantum critical XXZ chains with random coupling constants which are partially correlated. In the XX case, distinctly from the usual uncorrelated random case where the system is governed by an infinite-disorder fixed point, the correlated-disorder chain is governed by finite-disorder fixed points. Surprisingly, we verify that, although the system is not conformally invariant, the leading behavior of the Rényi entanglement entropies are similar to those of the clean (no randomness) conformally inv…
We study spin transport in the one-dimensional anisotropic S = 1 Heisenberg model. Particular emphasis is given to dynamics at infinite temperature, where current autocorrelations and spatio-temporal correlation functions are obtained by means of an efficient pure-state approach based on the concept of typicality. Our comprehensive numerical analysis unveils that high-temperature spin transport is diffusive in the easy-axis regime for strong exchange anisotropies. This finding is based on the combination of numerous signatures, such as (i) Gaussian spreading of correlations, (ii) a time-indepe…
For the antiferromagnetic, highly anisotropic XZ and XXZ quantum spin chains, we impose periodic boundary conditions on chains with an odd number of sites to force an interface (or kink) into the chain. We prove that the energy of the interface depends on the momentum of the state. This shows that at zero temperature the interface in such chains is not stable. This is in contrast to the ferromagnetic XXZ chain for which the existence of localized interface ground states has been proven for any amount of anisotropy in the Ising-like regime.

Many-body localization is a unique physical phenomenon driven by interactions and disorder for which a quantum system can evade thermalization. While the existence of a many-body localized phase is now well-established in one-dimensional systems, its fate in higher dimension is an open question. We present evidence for the occurrence of a transition to a many-body localized regime in a two-dimensional quantum dimer model with interactions and disorder. Our analysis is based on the results of large-scale simulations for static and dynamical properties of a consequent number of observables. Our …
We propose a new multiple integral representation for the correlation function <sigma_1^z sigma_{m+1}^z> of the XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain in the disordered regime. We show that for Delta=1/2 the integrals can be separated and computed exactly. As an example we give the explicit results up to the lattice distance m=8. It turns out that the answer is given as integer numbers divided by 2^[(m+1)^2].
The kagome lattice sits at the crossroad of present research efforts in quantum spin liquids, chiral phases, emergent skyrmion excitations and anomalous Hall effects to name but a few. In light of this diversity, our goal in this paper is to build a unifying picture of the underlying magnetic degrees-of-freedom on kagome. Motivated by a growing mosaic of materials, we especially consider a broad range of nearest-neighbour interactions consisting of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya as well as anisotropic ferro$-$ and antiferromagnetic coupling. We present a three-fold mapping on the kagome lattice which t…
Vertical density matrix algorithm (VDMA), a tensor product state formulation of the ``higher-dimensional'' density matrix renormalization group, is applied to the spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ model on the checkerboard lattice. The VDMA was, in the preceding study, applied to the transverse field Ising model on the square lattice and the three-dimensional classical Ising model. In the present paper, its implementation procedure is modified in order to apply the VDMA to the XXZ model. Numerical accuracy of the VDMA is investigated for the XXZ model on the square lattice, which shows that the m…
We study the failure process of fiber bundles on complex networks focusing on the effect of the degree of disorder of fibers' strength on the transition from localized to mean field behaviour. Starting from a regular square lattice we apply the Watts-Strogatz rewiring technique to introduce long range random connections in the load transmission network and analyze how the ultimate strength of the bundle and the statistics of the size of failure cascades change when the rewiring probability is gradually increased. Our calculations revealed that the degree of strength disorder of nodes of the ne…
We study the transition from a many-body localized phase to an ergodic phase in spin chain with correlated random magnetic fields. Using multiple statistical measures like gap statistics and extremal entanglement spectrum distributions, we find the phase diagram in the disorder-correlation plane, where the transition happens at progressively larger values of the correlation with increasing values of disorder. We then show that one can use the average of sample variance of magnetic fields as a single parameter which encodes the effects of the correlated disorder. The distributions and averages …
We present a finite-size scaling for both interaction and disorder strengths in the critical regime of the many-body localization (MBL) transition for a spin-1/2 XXZ spin chain with a random field by studying level statistics. We show how the dynamical transition from the thermal to MBL phase depends on interaction together with disorder by evaluating the ratio of adjacent level spacings, and thus, extend previous studies in which interaction coupling is fixed. We introduce an extra critical exponent in order to describe the nontrivial interaction dependence of the MBL transition. It is charac…
Very diluted Bose gas placed into a disordered environment falls into a fragmented localized state. At some critical density the repulsion between particles overcomes the disorder. The gas transits into a coherent superfluid state. In this article the geometrical and energetic characteristics of the localized state at zero temperature and the critical density at which the quantum phase transition from the localized to the superfluid state proceeds are found.
Motivated by the findings of logarithmic spreading of entanglement in a many-body localized system, we more closely examine the spreading of entanglement in the fully many-body localized phase, where all many-body eigenstates are localized. Performing full diagonalizations of an XXZ spin model with random longitudinal fields, we identify two factors contributing to the spreading rate: the localization length ($ξ$), which depends on the disorder strength, and the final value of entanglement per spin ($s_\infty$), which primarily depends on the initial state. We find that the entanglement entrop…
It was recently shown by Jimbo, Miwa and Smirnov that the correlation functions of a generalized XXZ chain associated with an inhomogeneous six-vertex model with disorder parameter $α$ and with arbitrary inhomogeneities on the horizontal lines factorize and can all be expressed in terms of only two functions $ρ$ and $ω$. Here we approach the description of the same correlation functions and, in particular, of the function $ω$ from a different direction. We start from a novel multiple integral representation for the density matrix of a finite chain segment of length $m$ in the presence of a dis…
This paper presents an analytical study of the coexistence of different transport regimes in quasi-one-dimensional surface-disordered waveguides (or electron conductors). To elucidate main features of surface scattering, the case of two open modes (channels) is considered in great detail. Main attention is paid to the transmission in dependence on various parameters of the model with two types of rough-surface profiles (symmetric and antisymmetric). It is shown that depending on the symmetry, basic mechanisms of scattering can be either enhanced or suppressed. As a consequence, different trans…
We uncover a novel mechanism for inducing a gapful phase in interacting many-body quantum chains. The mechanism is nonperturbative, being triggered only in the presence of both strong interactions and strong aperiodic (disordered) modulation. In the context of the critical antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ chain, we identify an emerging dimerization which removes the system from criticality and stabilizes the novel phase. This mechanism is shown to be quite general in strongly interacting quantum chains in the presence of strongly modulated quasiperiodic disorder which is, surprisingly, perturbat…
We introduce techniques for analysing the structure of quantum states of many-body localized (MBL) spin chains by identifying correlation clusters from pairwise correlations. These techniques proceed by interpreting pairwise correlations in the state as a weighted graph, which we analyse using an established graph theoretic clustering algorithm. We validate our approach by studying the eigenstates of a disordered XXZ spin chain across the MBL to ergodic transition, as well as the non-equilibrium dyanmics in the MBL phase following a global quantum quench. We successfully reproduce theoretical …
We compute the dynamics of localized excitations produced by a quantum quench in the spin 1/2 XXZ chain. Using numerics combining the density matrix renormalization group and exact time evolution, as well as analytical arguments, we show that fractionalization due to interactions in the pre-quench state gives rise to "ultrarelativistic" density waves that travel at the maximum band velocity. The system is initially prepared in the ground state of the chain within the gapless XY phase, which admits a Luttinger liquid (LL) description at low energies and long wavelengths. The Hamiltonian is then…
We examine the response of a system localized by disorder to a time dependent local perturbation which varies smoothly with a characteristic timescale $τ$. We find that such a perturbation induces a non-local response, involving a rearrangement of conserved quantities over a length scale $\sim \ln τ$. This effect lies beyond linear response, is absent in undisordered insulators and highlights the remarkable subtlety of localized phases. The effect is common to both single particle and many body localized phases. Our results have implications for numerous fields, including topological quantum c…
We explore the finite-temperature dynamics of the quasi-1D orbital compass and plaquette Ising models. We map these systems onto a model of free fermions coupled to strictly localized spin-1/2 degrees of freedom. At finite temperature, the localized degrees of freedom act as emergent disorder and localize the fermions. Although the model can be analyzed using free-fermion techniques, it has dynamical signatures in common with typical many-body localized systems: Starting from generic initial states, entanglement grows logarithmically; in addition, equilibrium dynamical correlation functions de…
We report the analogue simulation of an ergodiclocalized junction by using an array of 12 coupled superconducting qubits. To perform the simulation, we fabricated a superconducting quantum processor that is divided into two domains: a driven domain representing an ergodic system, while the second is localized under the effect of disorder. Due to the overlap between localized and delocalized states, for small disorder there is a proximity effect and localization is destroyed. To experimentally investigate this, we prepare a microwave excitation in the driven domain and explore how deep it can p…
We solve few-magnon problems for a finite-size spin-$S$ periodic Heisenberg XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy through constructing sets of exact Bloch states achieving block diagonalization of the system. Concretely, the two-magnon (three-magnon) problem is converted to a single-particle one on a one-dimensional (two-dimensional) effective lattice whose size depends linearly (quadratically) on the total number of sites. For parameters lying within certain ranges, various types of multimagnon bound states are manifested and shown to correspond to edge states on the effective lattices. In the…
In this paper we first compute the out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC) for both a phenomenological model and a random-field XXZ model in the many-body localized phase. We show that the OTOC decreases in power law in a many-body localized system at the scrambling time. We also find that the OTOC can also be used to distinguish a many-body localized phase from an Anderson localized phase, while a normal correlator cannot. Furthermore, we prove an exact theorem that relates the growth of the second Rényi entropy in the quench dynamics to the decay of the OTOC in equilibrium. This theorem works f…
The recently fabricated two-dimensional magnetic materials Cu9X2(cpa)6.xH2O (cpa=2-carboxypentonic acid; X=F,Cl,Br) have copper sites which form a triangular kagome lattice (TKL), formed by introducing small triangles (``a-trimers'') inside of each kagome triangle (``b-trimer''). We show that in the limit where spins residing on b-trimers have Ising character, quantum fluctuations of XXZ spins residing on the a-trimers can be exactly accounted for in the absence of applied field. This is accomplished through a mapping to the kagome Ising model, for which exact analytic solutions exist. We deri…
The effect of spatial localization of states in distributed parameter systems under frozen parametric disorder is well known as the Anderson localization and thoroughly studied for the Schrödinger equation and linear dissipation-free wave equations. Some similar (or mimicking) phenomena can occur in dissipative systems such as the thermal convection ones. Specifically, many of these dissipative systems are governed by a modified Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, where the frozen spatial disorder of parameters has been reported to lead to excitation of localized patterns. Imposed advection in the …
The presence and character of local integrals of motion -- quasi-local operators that commute with the Hamiltonian -- encode valuable information about the dynamics of a quantum system. In particular, strongly disordered many-body systems can generically avoid thermalisation when there are extensively many such operators. In this work, we explicitly construct local conserved operators in $1$D spin chains by directly minimising their commutator with the Hamiltonian. We demonstrate the existence of an extensively large set of local integrals of motion in the many-body localised phase of the diso…
We study the effects of local perturbations on the dynamics of disordered fermionic systems in order to characterize time-irreversibility. We focus on three different systems, the non-interacting Anderson and Aubry-André-Harper (AAH-) models, and the interacting spinless disordered t-V chain. First, we consider the effect on the full many-body wave-functions by measuring the Loschmidt echo (LE). We show that in the extended/ergodic phase the LE decays exponentially fast with time, while in the localized phase the decay is algebraic. We demonstrate that the exponent of the decay of the LE in th…
We use non-equilibrium steady states to study the effect of dissipation-assisted operator evolution (DAOE) on the scaling behavior of transport in one-dimensional spin chains. We consider three models in the XXZ family: the XXZ model with staggered anisotropy, which is chaotic; XXZ model with no external field and tunable interaction, which is Bethe ansatz integrable and (in the zero interaction limit) free fermion integrable; and the disordered XY model, which is free-fermion integrable and Anderson localized. We find evidence that DAOE's effect on transport is controlled by its effect on the…
We study the open XXZ spin chain in the anti-ferromagnetic regime and for generic longitudinal magnetic fields at the two boundaries. We discuss the ground state via the Bethe ansatz and we show that, for a chain of even length L and in a regime where both boundary magnetic fields are equal and bounded by a critical field, the spectrum is gapped and the ground state is doubly degenerate up to exponentially small corrections in L. We connect this degeneracy to the presence of a boundary root, namely an excitation localized at one of the two boundaries. We compute the local magnetization at the …
We investigate the typicality of the growth behavior of the out-of-time-ordered commutator (OTOC) in the many-body localized (MBL) quantum spin chains across random disorder realizations. In the MBL phase of the Heisenberg XXZ chain, we find that the estimate of the OTOC fluctuates significantly with the disorder realizations at the intermediate times of the main growth. Despite the consequent failure of the disorder average in the MBL phase, we argue that the characteristic behavior of the OTOC growth can still be identified by going through individual disorder realizations. We find that a po…
We examine the dynamics of nearest-neighbor bipartite concurrence and total correlations in the spin-1/2 $XXZ$ model with random fields. We show, starting from factorized random initial states, that the concurrence can suffer entanglement sudden death in the long time limit and therefore may not be a useful indicator of the properties of the system. In contrast, we show that the total correlations capture the dynamics more succinctly, and further reveal a fundamental difference in the dynamics governed by the ergodic versus many-body localized phases, with the latter exhibiting dynamical oscil…
