Many-body localization is a unique physical phenomenon driven by interactions and disorder for which a quantum system can evade thermalization. While the existence of a many-body localized phase is now well-established in one-dimensional systems, its fate in higher dimension is an open question. We present evidence for the occurrence of a transition to a many-body localized regime in a two-dimensional quantum dimer model with interactions and disorder. Our analysis is based on the results of large-scale simulations for static and dynamical properties of a consequent number of observables. Our results pave the way for a generic understanding of occurrence of a many-body localization transition in dimension larger than one, and highlight the unusual quantum dynamics that can be present in constrained systems.
We numerically study the possibility of many-body localization transition in a disordered quantum dimer model on the honeycomb lattice. By using the peculiar constraints of this model and state-of-the-art exact diagonalization and time evolution methods, we probe both eigenstates and dynamical properties and conclude on the existence of a localization transition, on the available time and length scales (system sizes of up to N=108 sites). We critically discuss these results and their implications.
We investigate the field-induced insulator-to-superfluid transition of bosonic quasiparticles in $S=1/2$ weakly-coupled dimer antiferromagnets. In presence of realistic disorder due to site dilution of the magnetic lattice, we show that the system displays an extended Bose-glass phase characterized by the localization of the hard-core quasiparticles.
Jammed disordered packings of non-spherical particles show significant variation in the packing density as a function of particle shape for a given packing protocol. Rotationally symmetric elongated shapes such as ellipsoids, spherocylinders, and dimers, e.g., pack significantly denser than spheres over a narrow range of aspect ratios, exhibiting a characteristic peak at aspect ratios of $α_{\rm max}\approx 1.4-1.5$. However, the structural features that underlie this non-monotonic behaviour in the packing density are unknown. Here, we study disordered packings of frictionless dimers in three …
In the present paper we discuss the rich phase diagram of S=1/2 weakly coupled dimer systems with site dilution as a function of an applied uniform magnetic field. Performing quantum Monte Carlo simulations on a site-diluted bilayer system, we find a sequence of three distinct quantum-disordered phases induced by the field. Such phases divide a doping-induced order-by-disorder phase at low fields from a field-induced ordered phase at intermediate fields. The three quantum disordered phases are: a gapless disordered-free-moment phase, a gapped plateau phase, and two gapless Bose-glass phases. E…
We investigate the dynamics of a quantum particle in disordered tight-binding models in one and two dimensions which are exceptions to the common wisdom on Anderson localization, in the sense that the localization length diverges at some special energies. We provide a consistent picture for two well-known one-dimensional examples: the chain with off-diagonal disorder and the random-dimer model. In both cases the quantum motion exhibits a peculiar kind of anomalous diffusion which can be referred to as bi-fractality. The disorder-averaged density profile of the particle becomes critical in the …
The quantum critical regime (QCR) of a two-dimensional (2D) disordered and a 2D clean dimerized spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg models are studied using the first principles nonperturbative quantum Monte Carlo simulations (QMC). In particular, the three well-known universal coefficients associated with QCR are investigated in detail. While in our investigation we find the obtained results are consistent with the related analytic predictions, non-negligible finite temperature ($T$) effects are observed. Such an influence from $T$ on the properties of the considered spin systems related to QCR has…
It is commonly believed that Anderson localized states and extended states do not coexist at the same energy. Here we propose a simple mechanism to achieve the coexistence of localized and extended states in a band in a class of disordered quasi-1D and quasi-2D systems. The systems are partially disordered in a way that a band of extended states always exists, not affected by the randomness, whereas the states in all other bands become localized. The extended states can overlap with the localized states both in energy and in space, achieving the aforementioned coexistence. We demonstrate such …
We study the electronic properties of GaAs-AlGaAs superlattices with intentional correlated disorder by means of photoluminescence and vertical dc resistance. The results are compared to those obtained in ordered and uncorrelated disordered superlattices. We report the first experimental evidence that spatial correlations inhibit localization of states in disordered low-dimensional systems, as our previous theoretical calculations suggested, in contrast to the earlier belief that all eigenstates are localized.
The hopping transport of charge carries in 3-dimensional disordered semiconductors is analyzed in this work. It is assumed that the density of localized states is a decreasing function of energy and contribution of thermoactivated jumps into the transport is negligible. The possibility of equilibrium energetic distribution for this case is shown. This distribution is characterized by field--dependent effective temperature.
In this work we show analytically and numerically that wave transport through random waveguides can be modeled as a diffusion with an inhomogeneous diffusion coefficient (IDC). In localized regime, IDC retains the memory of the source position. In an absorbing random medium, IDC becomes independent of the source.
We propose a method to construct localized single particle wave functions using imaginary time projection and thereby determine lattice Hamiltonian parameters. We apply the method to a specific disordered potential generated by an optical lattice experiment and calculate for each instance of disorder, the equivalent lattice model parameters. The probability distributions of the Hubbard parameters are then determined. Tests of localization and eigen-energy convergence are examined.
Using a stochastic quantum approach, we study thermoelectric transport phenomena at low temperatures in disordered electrical systems connected to external baths. We discuss three different models of one-dimensional disordered electrons, namely the Anderson model of random on-site energies, the random-dimer model and the random-hopping model - also relevant for random-spin models. We find that although the asymptotic behavior of transport in open systems is closely related to that in closed systems for these noninteracting models, the magnitude of thermoelectric transport strongly depends on t…
The effect of quenched disorder on the low-energy properties of various antiferromagnetic spin ladder models is studied by a numerical strong disorder renormalization group method and by density matrix renormalization. For strong enough disorder the originally gapped phases with finite topological or dimer order become gapless. In these quantum Griffiths phases the scaling of the energy, as well as the singularities in the dynamical quantities are characterized by a finite dynamical exponent, z, which varies with the strength of disorder. At the phase boundaries, separating topologically disti…
We study Anderson localization of a scalar wave in an ensemble of resonant point scatterers embedded in an anisotropic background medium. For uniaxial anisotropy of moderate strength, the mobility edges and the critical exponent of the localization transition are found to be unaffected by the anisotropy provided that the determinant of the anisotropy tensor is kept equal to one upon introducing the anisotropy. Localized modes have anisotropic spatial shapes although their anisotropy is weaker than the one expected from purely geometric considerations. The modes with the longest lifetimes are f…
This paper presents an analytical study of the coexistence of different transport regimes in quasi-one-dimensional surface-disordered waveguides (or electron conductors). To elucidate main features of surface scattering, the case of two open modes (channels) is considered in great detail. Main attention is paid to the transmission in dependence on various parameters of the model with two types of rough-surface profiles (symmetric and antisymmetric). It is shown that depending on the symmetry, basic mechanisms of scattering can be either enhanced or suppressed. As a consequence, different trans…
A long-standing problem of the low-energy dynamics of a disordered XY spin chain is re-examined. The case of a rigid chain is studied where the quantum effects can be treated quasiclassically. It is shown that as the frequency decreases, the relevant excitations change from localized spin waves to two-level systems to soliton-antisoliton pairs. The linear-response correlation functions are calculated. The results apply to other periodic glassy systems such as pinned density waves, planar vortex lattices, stripes, and disordered Luttinger liquids.
We discuss vibrational localization problems in glasses and disordered media in this paper. It is claimed that the essence of the localization problem is already observed in disordered lattice models. These kinds of vibrations belong to a different universality class than bonded electrons. Specifically, The eigenvectors are extended even in two dimensions. Moreover, the correlation exponent does not diverge in the transition from localized to delocalized states. Furthermore, the volume of the extended states is scaled according to the distance from the transition as $V\sim |ω-ω_c| L^d$. Intere…
In this paper we propose that phonons, free diffusive electrons, and diffusion in two-and three--dimensional disordered lattice problems belong to a different class of localization than bonded electrons. This is manifested by three effects that can be observed numerically. First, there are extended states even at two dimensions, whereas there are no extended states in the usual electronic models. Second, the correlation length does not diverge at the mobility edges in three dimensions, and finally, the participation ratio of the extended states, decays to zero at this edge. This indicates zero…
The Néel temperature, staggered magnetization density, as well as the spinwave velocity of a three-dimensional (3D) quantum Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic disorder (randomness) are calculated using first principles non-perturbative quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we examine the validity of universal scaling relations that are related to these three studied physical quantities. These relations are relevant to experimental data and are firmly established for clean (regular) 3D dimerized spin-1/2 Heisenberg models. Remarkably, our numerical results show that the considere…
We study the stability of the topological phase in one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain subject to the quasiperiodic hopping disorder. We investigate two different hopping disorder configurations, one is the Aubry-André quasiperiodic disorder without mobility edges and the other is the slowly varying quasiperiodic disorder with mobility edges. With the increment of the quasiperiodic disorder strength, the topological phase of the system transitions to a topologically trivial phase. Interestingly, we find the occurrence of the topological phase transition at the critical disorder strength…
A prime characterization of many-body localized (MBL) systems is the entanglement of their eigenstates; in contrast to the typical ergodic phase whose eigenstates are volume law, MBL eigenstates obey an area law. In this work, we show that a spin-disordered Hubbard model has both a large number of area-law eigenstates as well as a large number of eigenstates whose entanglement scales logarithmically with system size (log-law). This model, then, is a microscopic Hamiltonian which is neither ergodic nor many-body localized. We establish these results through a combination of analytic arguments b…
We demonstrate that a weak disorder in atomic positions introduces spatially localized optical modes in a dense three-dimensional ensemble of immobile two-level atoms arranged in a diamond lattice and coupled by the electromagnetic field. The frequencies of the localized modes concentrate near band edges of the unperturbed lattice. Finite-size scaling analysis of the percentiles of Thouless conductance reveals two mobility edges and yields an estimation $ν= 0.8$--1.1 for the critical exponent of the localization length. The localized modes disappear when the disorder becomes too strong and the…
We study the effects of local perturbations on the dynamics of disordered fermionic systems in order to characterize time-irreversibility. We focus on three different systems, the non-interacting Anderson and Aubry-André-Harper (AAH-) models, and the interacting spinless disordered t-V chain. First, we consider the effect on the full many-body wave-functions by measuring the Loschmidt echo (LE). We show that in the extended/ergodic phase the LE decays exponentially fast with time, while in the localized phase the decay is algebraic. We demonstrate that the exponent of the decay of the LE in th…
The conventional single-particle Monte Carlo simulation of charge transport in disordered media is based on the truncated density of localized states (DOLS) which benefits from very short time execution. Although this model successfully clarifies the properties of electron transport in moderately disordered media, it overestimates the electron diffusion coefficient for strongly disordered media. The origin of this deviation is discussed in terms of zero-temperature approximation in the truncated DOLS and the ignorance of spatial occupation of localized states. Here, based on the multiple-trapp…
We investigate disordered graphene with strong long-range impurities. Contrary to the common belief that delocalization should persist in such a system against any disorder, as the system is ex-pected to be equivalent to a disordered two-dimensional Dirac Fermionic system, we find that states near the Dirac points are localized for sufficiently strong disorder and the transition between the localized and delocalized states is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type. Our results show that the transition originates from bounding and unbounding of local current vortices.
We develop a new method to isolate localized defects from extended vibrational modes in disordered solids. This method augments particle interactions with an artificial potential that acts as a high-pass filter: it preserves small-scale structures while pushing extended vibrational modes to higher frequencies. The low-frequency modes that remain are "bare" defects; they are exponentially localized without the quadrupolar tails associated with elastic interactions. We demonstrate that these localized excitations are excellent predictors of plastic rearrangements in the solid. We characterize se…
It is well-known that disordered quantum magnets usually host localized elementary excitations in gapped phases. Here we show that long-range magnetodipolar interaction can lead to quasiparticles delocalization in the three-dimensional case, similarly to the phenomenon previously described for localized vibrational modes in disordered solids. Employing renormalization group-like ideas, the average eigenmode occupation number is found to scale with the system size, which also leads to sub-diffusive dynamical properties of the system.
We study the phase distribution of the complex reflection coefficient in different configurations as a disordered 1D system evolves in length, and its effect on the distribution of the 4-probe resistance $R_4$. The stationary ($L \to \infty$) phase distribution is almost always strongly non-uniform and is in general double-peaked with their separation decaying algebraically with growing disorder strength to finally give rise to a single narrow peak at infinitely strong disorder. Further in the length regime where the phase distribution still evolves with length (i.e., in the quasi-ballistic to…

A new type of delocalization induced by coherent harmonic perturbations in one-dimensional Anderson-localized disordered systems is investigated. With only a few $M$ frequencies a normal diffusion is realized, but the transition to localized state always occurs as the perturbation strength is weakened below a critical value. The nature of the transition qualitatively follows the Anderson transition (AT) if the number of degrees of freedom $M+1$ is regarded as the spatial dimension $d$, but the critical dimension is not $d=M+1-2$ of the ordinary AT but $d=3$.
We study numerically propagation of energy in a one dimensional Ding-Ding lattice, composed of linear oscillators with ellastic collisions. Wave propagation is suppressed by breaking translational symmetry, we consider three way to do this: a position disorder, a mass disorder, and a dimer lattice with alternating distances between the units. In all cases the spreading of an initially localized wavepacket is irregular, due to appearance of chaos, and subdiffusive. Guided by a nonlinear diffusion equation, we establish that the mean waiting times of spreading obey a scaling law in dependence on…
In critical systems, the effect of a localized perturbation affects points that are arbitrarily far from the perturbation location. In this paper, we study the effect of localized perturbations on the solution of the random dimer problem in $2D$. By means of an accurate numerical analysis, we show that a local perturbation of the optimal covering induces an excitation whose size is extensive with finite probability. We compute the fractal dimension of the excitations and scaling exponents. In particular, excitations in random dimer problems on non-bipartite lattices have the same statistical p…
We analyze the localized phase of a general model of a directed polymer in the proximity of an interface that separates two solvents. Each monomer unit carries a charge, $ω_n$, that determines the type (attractive or repulsive) and the strength of its interaction with the solvents. In addition, there is a polymer--interface interaction and we want to model the case in which there are impurities $\tildeω_n$, that we call again charges, at the interface. The charges are distributed in an in--homogeneous fashion along the chain and at the interface: more precisely the model we consider is of quen…
As a function of the disorder strength in a mesoscopic system, the electron dynamics crosses over from the ballistic through the diffusive towards the localized regime. The ballistic and the localized situation correspond to integrable or regular behavior while diffusive conductors correspond to chaotic behavior. The chaotic or regular character of single wave functions can be inferred from phase space concepts like the Husimi distribution and the Wehrl entropy. These quantities provide useful information about the structure of states in disordered systems. We investigate the phase space struc…
When light waves propagate through disordered photonic lattices, they can eventually become localized due to multiple scattering effects. Here we show experimentally that while the evolution and localization of the photon density distribution is similar in the two cases of diagonal and off-diagonal disorder, the density-density correlation carries a distinct signature of the type of disorder. We show that these differences reflect a symmetry in the spectrum and eigenmodes that exists in off-diagonally disordered lattices but is absent in lattices with diagonal disorder.
We calculate the temperature dependence of the fluorescence Stokes shift and the fluorescence decay time in linear Frenkel exciton systems resulting from the thermal redistribution of exciton population over the band states. The following factors, relevant to common experimental conditions, are accounted for in our kinetic model: (weak) localization of the exciton states by static disorder, coupling of the localized excitons to vibrations in the host medium, a possible non-equilibrium of the subsystem of localized Frenkel excitons on the time scale of the emission process, and different excita…
Site dilution of spin-gapped antiferromagnets leads to localized free moments, which can order antiferromagnetically in two and higher dimensions. Here we show how a weak magnetic field drives this order-by-disorder state into a novel disordered-free-moment phase, characterized by the formation of local singlets between neighboring moments and by localized moments aligned antiparallel to the field. This disordered phase is characterized by the absence of a gap, as it is the case in a Bose glass. The associated field-driven quantum phase transition is consistent with the universality of a super…
The question of whether the topological insulators can host a stable nontrivial phase in the presence of spatially correlated disorder is a fundamental question of interest. Based on theoretical investigations, we analyze the effect of random-dimer disorder on the quantum phase transitions of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We explicitly demonstrate that, due to the absence of symmetry, there are no in-gap edge states in certain disordered topological nontrivial gapped phase and the bulk-boundary correspondence breaks down. However, the fractionalized end charges still appear at the ends of th…
Disorder in quantum systems can lead to the disruption of long-range order in the ground state and to the localization of the elementary excitations - famous examples thereof being the Bose glass of interacting bosons in a disordered or quasi-periodic environment, or the localized phase of spin chains mapping onto fermions. Here we present a two-dimensional quantum Ising model - relevant to the physics of Rydberg-atom arrays - in which positional disorder of the spins induces a randomization of the spin-spin couplings and of an on-site longitudinal field. This form of disorder preserves long-r…
System of Dirac fermions with random-varying mass is studied in detail. We reformulate the system by transfer-matrix formalism. Eigenvalues and wave functions are obtained numerically for various configurations of random telegraphic mass m(x). Localized and extended states are identified. For quasi-periodic m(x), low-energy wave functions are also quasi-periodic and extended, though we are not imposing the periodic boundary condition on wave function. On increasing the randomness of the varying mass, states lose periodicity and most of them tend to localize. At the band center or the low-energ…
The effect of an electric field on conduction in a disordered system is an old but largely unsolved problem. Experiments cover an wide variety of systems - amorphous/doped semiconductors, conducting polymers, organic crystals, manganites, composites, metallic alloys, double perovskites - ranging from strongly localized systems to weakly localized ones, from strongly correlated ones to weakly correlated ones. Theories have singularly failed to predict any universal trend resulting in separate theories for separate systems. Here we discuss an one-parameter scaling that has recently been found to…
We present a numerical study of electromagnetic wave transport in disordered quasi-one-dimensional waveguides at terahertz frequencies. Finite element method calculations of terahertz wave propagation within LiNbO$_{3}$ waveguides with randomly arranged air-filled circular scatterers exhibit an onset of Anderson localization at experimentally accessible length scales. Results for the average transmission as a function of waveguide length and scatterer density demonstrate a clear crossover from diffusive to localized transport regime. In addition, we find that transmission fluctuations grow dra…
We demonstrate the existence of exact atypical many-body eigenstates in a class of disordered, interacting one-dimensional quantum systems that includes the Fermi-Hubbard model as a special case. These atypical eigenstates, which generically have finite energy density and are exponentially many in number, are populated by noninteracting excitations. They can exhibit Anderson localization with area-law eigenstate entanglement or, surprisingly, ballistic transport at any disorder strength. These properties differ strikingly from those of typical eigenstates nearby in energy, which we show give r…
The S=1/2 Heisenberg model is considered on bilayer and single-layer square lattices with couplings J1, J2, and with each spin belonging to one J2-coupled dimer. A transition from a Neel to disordered ground state occurs at a critical value of g=J2/J1. The systems are here studied at their dimer-dilution percolation points p*. The multi-critical point (g*,p*) previously found for the bilayer is not reproduced for the single layer. Instead, there is line of critical points (g < g*,p*) with continuously varying exponents. The uniform magnetic susceptibility diverges as 1/T^a $ with a in the rang…
To characterize a destruction of Anderson localization by nonlinearity, we study the spreading behavior of initially localized states in disordered, strongly nonlinear lattices. Due to chaotic nonlinear interaction of localized linear or nonlinear modes, energy spreads nearly subdiffusively. Based on a phenomenological description by virtue of a nonlinear diffusion equation we establish a one-parameter scaling relation between the velocity of spreading and the density, which is confirmed numerically. From this scaling it follows that for very low densities the spreading slows down compared to …
Many-body localization (MBL) addresses the absence of thermalization in interacting quantum systems, with non-ergodic high-energy eigenstates behaving as ground states, only area-law entangled. However, computing highly excited many-body eigenstates using exact methods is very challenging. Instead, we show that one can address high-energy MBL physics using ground-state methods, which are much more amenable to many efficient algorithms. We find that a localized many-body ground state of a given interacting disordered Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}_0$ is a very good approximation for a high-energy eig…
Recent work has studied the growth of commutators as a probe of chaos and information scrambling in quantum many-body systems. In this work we study the effect of static disorder on the growth of commutators in a variety of contexts. We find generically that disorder slows the onset of scrambling, and, in the case of a many-body localized state, partially halts it. We access the many-body localized state using a standard fixed point Hamiltonian, and we show that operators exhibit slow logarithmic growth under time evolution. We compare the result with the expected growth of commutators in both…
