Many-body localization (MBL) addresses the absence of thermalization in interacting quantum systems, with non-ergodic high-energy eigenstates behaving as ground states, only area-law entangled. However, computing highly excited many-body eigenstates using exact methods is very challenging. Instead, we show that one can address high-energy MBL physics using ground-state methods, which are much more amenable to many efficient algorithms. We find that a localized many-body ground state of a given interacting disordered Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}_0$ is a very good approximation for a high-energy eigenstate of a parent Hamiltonian, close to $\mathcal{H}_0$ but more disordered. This construction relies on computing the covariance matrix, easily achieved using density-matrix renormalization group for disordered Heisenberg chains up to $L=256$ sites.
We show that the one-particle density matrix $ρ$ can be used to characterize the interaction-driven many-body localization transition in closed fermionic systems. The natural orbitals (the eigenstates of $ρ$) are localized in the many-body localized phase and spread out when one enters the delocalized phase, while the occupation spectrum (the set of eigenvalues of $ρ$) reveals the distinctive Fock-space structure of the many-body eigenstates, exhibiting a step-like discontinuity in the localized phase. The associated one-particle occupation entropy is small in the localized phase and large in …
We study the localization problem of one-dimensional interacting spinless fermions in an incommensurate optical lattice, which changes from an extended phase to a nonergoic many-body localized phase by increasing the strength of the incommensurate potential. We identify that there exists an intermediate regime before the system enters the many-body localized phase, in which both the localized and extended many-body states coexist, thus the system is divided into three different phases, which can be characterized by normalized participation ratios of the many-body eigenstates and distributions …
The quantum Coulomb glass model describes disordered interacting electrons on the insulating side of a metal-insulator transition. By taking quantum fluctuations into account it can describe not only the localized limit but also the weakly localized regime. We discuss several possibilities to generalize the concept of Anderson localization to interacting electron systems such as the quantum Coulomb glass and define criteria for localization. The corresponding physical quantities are calculated by numerically exact diagonalization. The results indicate that single-particle excitations close to …
An important and incompletely answered question is whether a closed quantum system of many interacting particles can be localized by disorder. The time evolution of simple (unentangled) initial states is studied numerically for a system of interacting spinless fermions in one dimension described by the random-field XXZ Hamiltonian. Interactions induce a dramatic change in the propagation of entanglement and a smaller change in the propagation of particles. For even weak interactions, when the system is thought to be in a many-body localized phase, entanglement shows neither localized nor diffu…
We use exact diagonalization to study the breakdown of many-body localization in a strongly disordered and interacting system coupled to a thermalizing environment. We show that the many-body level statistics cross over from Poisson to GOE, and the localized eigenstates thermalize, with the crossover coupling decreasing with the size of the bath in a manner consistent with the hypothesis that an infinitesimally small coupling to a thermodynamic bath should destroy localization of the eigenstates. However, signatures of incomplete localization survive in spectral functions of local operators ev…
In this paper we study the localization transition induced by the disorder in random antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains. The results of numerical large scale computations are presented for the XX model using its free fermions representation. The scaling behavior of the spin stiffness is investigated for various disorder strengths. The disorder dependence of the localization length is studied and a comparison between numerical results and bosonization arguments is presented. A non trivial connection between localization effects and the crossover from the pure XX fixed point to the infinite rando…
We examine the interplay of interaction and disorder for a Heisenberg spin ladder system with random fields. We identify many-body localized states based on the entanglement entropy scaling, where delocalized and localized states have volume and area laws, respectively. We first establish the quantum phase transition at a critical random field strength $h_c \sim 8.5\pm 0.5$, where all energy eigenstates are localized beyond that value. Interestingly, the entanglement entropy and fluctuation of the bipartite magnetization show distinct probability distributions which characterize different quan…
We study the eigenstates of a paradigmatic model of many-body localization in the Fock basis constructed out of the natural orbitals. By numerically studying the participation ratio, we identify a sharp crossover between different phases at a disorder strength close to the disorder strength at which subdiffusive behaviour sets in, significantly below the many-body localization transition. We repeat the analysis in the conventionally used computational basis, and show that many-body localized eigenstates are much stronger localized in the Fock basis constructed out of the natural orbitals than …
We study numerically the formation of entanglement clusters across the many-body localization phase transition. We observe a crossover from strong many-body entanglement in the ergodic phase to weak local correlations in the localized phase, with contiguous clusters throughout the phase diagram. Critical states close to the transition have a structure compatible with fractal or multiscale-entangled states, characterized by entanglement at multiple levels: small strongly entangled clusters are weakly entangled together to form larger clusters. The critical point therefore features subthermal en…
Insertion of disorder in thermal interacting quantum systems decreases the amount of level repulsion and can turn them into many body localized phases. In this paper we use the many body picture to perturbatively study the effect of level repulsion in the localized phase. We find that most eigenstates can be described accurately in an approximate way, including many with rare resonances. A classification of the rare resonances shows that most types are exponentially rare and requires exponential fine tuning in an approximate description. The classification confirms that no rare thermal eigenst…
The article reviews the physics of Anderson localization on random regular graphs (RRG) and its connections to many-body localization (MBL) in disordered interacting systems. Properties of eigenstate and energy level correlations in delocalized and localized phases, as well at criticality, are discussed. In the many-body part, models with short-range and power-law interactions are considered, as well as the quantum-dot model representing the limit of the "most long-range" interaction. Central themes -- which are common to the RRG and MBL problems -- include ergodicity of the delocalized phase,…
We show that the presence of a harmonic trap may in itself lead to many-body localization for cold atoms confined in that trap in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry. Specifically, the coexistence of delocalized phase in the center of the trap with localized region closer to the edges is predicted with the borderline dependent on the curvature of the trap. The phenomenon, similar in its origin to Stark localization, should be directly observed with cold atomic species. We discuss both the spinless and the spinful fermions, for the latter we address Stark localization at the same time as it has no…
We develop a model of a strongly correlated Bose fluid model in a confined potential for the purpose of analyzing the localization of Bose-Einstein condensation and the disappearance of superfluidity. This work is motivated by the recent observation of a quantum phase transition in liquid $^4$He in porous glass at high pressures. By introducing a pressure-dependent localization length of the localized condensates, we could make a new analytical criterion for the localization of the condensate. Without introducing any free parameters, the resulting critical pressure of the transition from super…
We demonstrate that a knowledge of the density-of-states and the eigenstates of a random system without gain, in conjunction with the frequency profile of the gain, can accurately predict the mode that will lase first. Its critical pumping rate can be also obtained. It is found that the shape of the wavefunction of the random system remains unchanged as gain is introduced. These results were obtained by the time-independent transfer matrix method and finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) methods. They can be also analytically understood by generalizing the semi-classical Lamb theory of lasing i…
Closed quantum systems with quenched randomness exhibit many-body localized regimes wherein they do not equilibrate even though prepared with macroscopic amounts of energy above their ground states. We show that such localized systems can order in that individual many-body eigenstates can break symmetries or display topological order in the infinite volume limit. Indeed, isolated localized quantum systems can order even at energy densities where the corresponding thermally equilibrated system is disordered, i.e.: localization protects order. In addition, localized systems can move between orde…
The question whether Anderson insulators can persist to finite-strength interactions - a scenario dubbed many-body localization - has recently received a great deal of interest. The origin of such a many-body localized phase has been described as localization in Fock space, a picture we examine numerically. We then formulate a precise sense in which a single energy eigenstate of a Hamiltonian can be adiabatically connected to a state of a non-interacting Anderson insulator. We call such a state a many-body localized state and define a many-body localized phase as one in which almost all states…
In the absence of confinement localization of waves takes place due to randomness or nonlinearity and relies on their phase coherence. We quantitatively probe the sensitivity of localized wave packets to random phase fluctuations and confirm the necessity of phase coherence for localization. Decoherence resulting from a dynamical random environment leads to diffusive spreading and destroys linear and nonlinear localization. We find that maximal spreading is achieved for optimal phase fluctuation characteristics which is a consequence of the competition between diffusion due to decoherence and …
In the presence of strong disorder and weak interactions, closed quantum systems can enter a many-body localized phase where the system does not conduct, does not equilibrate even for arbitrarily long times, and robustly violates quantum statistical mechanics. The starting point for such a many-body localized phase is usually taken to be an Anderson insulator where, in the limit of vanishing interactions, all degrees of freedom of the system are localized. Here, we instead consider a model where in the non-interacting limit, some degrees of freedom are localized while others remain delocalized…
Disordered systems exhibiting exponential localization are mapped to anisotropic spin chains with localization length being related to the anisotropy of the spin model. This relates localization phenomenon in fermions to the rotational symmetry breaking in the critical spin chains. One of the intriguing consequence is that the statement of Onsager universality in spin chains implies universality of the localized fermions where the fluctuations in localized wave functions are universal. We further show that the fluctuations about localized nonrelativistic fermions describe relativistic fermions…
Using numerically exact methods we study transport in an interacting spin chain which for sufficiently strong spatially constant electric field is expected to experience Stark many-body localization. We show that starting from a generic initial state, a spin-excitation remains localized only up to a finite delocalization time, which depends exponentially on the size of the system and the strength of the electric field. This suggests that bona fide Stark many-body localization occurs only in the thermodynamic limit. We also demonstrate that the transient localization in a finite system and for …
The low-frequency response of systems near the many-body localization phase transition, on either side of the transition, is dominated by contributions from rare regions that are locally "in the other phase", i.e., rare localized regions in a system that is typically thermal, or rare thermal regions in a system that is typically localized. Rare localized regions affect the properties of the thermal phase, especially in one dimension, by acting as bottlenecks for transport and the growth of entanglement, whereas rare thermal regions in the localized phase act as local "baths" and dominate the l…
We study many-body localization (MBL) and delocalization from the perspective of integrals of motion (IOMs). MBL can be understood phenomenologically through the existence of macroscopically many localized IOMs. However, IOMs exist for all many-body systems, and non-localized IOMs determine properties on the ergodic side of the MBL transition too. Here we explore their properties using our method of displacement transformations. We show how different quantities can be calculated using the IOMs as an expansion in the number of operators. For all values of disorder the typical IOMs are localized…
We have recently shown that the logarithmic growth of the entanglement entropy following a quantum quench in a many-body localized (MBL) phase is accompanied by a slow growth of the number entropy, $S_N\sim\ln\ln t$. Here we provide an in-depth numerical study of $S_N(t)$ for the disordered Heisenberg chain and show that this behavior is not transient and persists even for very strong disorder. Calculating the truncated Rényi number entropy $S_N^{(α)}(t)=(1-α)^{-1}\ln\sum_n p^α(n)$ for $α\ll 1$ and $p(n)>p_c$ -- which is sensitive to large number fluctuations occurring with low probability -- …
Many-body localization (MBL) is well characterized in Fock space. To quantify the degree of this Fock space localization, the multifractal dimension $D_q$ is employed; it has been claimed that $D_q$ shows a jump from the delocalized value $D_q=1$ in the ETH phase (ETH: eigenstate thermalization hypothesis) to a smaller value $0<D_q<1$ at the ETH-MBL transition, yet exhibiting a conspicuous discrepancy from the fully localized value $D_q=0$, which indicate that multifractality remains inside the MBL phase. Here, to better quantify the situation we employ, instead of the commonly used computatio…
We study the surface of a three-dimensional spin chiral $\mathrm{Z}_2$ topological insulator (class CII), demonstrating the possibility of its localization. This arises through an interplay of interaction and statistically-symmetric disorder, that confines the gapless fermionic degrees of freedom to a network of one-dimensional helical domain-walls that can be localized. We identify two distinct regimes of this gapless insulating phase, a `clogged' regime wherein the network localization is induced by its junctions between otherwise metallic helical domain-walls, and a `fully localized' regime…
We study many-body-localized (MBL) systems that are weakly coupled to thermalizing environments, focusing on the spectral functions of local operators. We argue that these spectral functions carry signatures of localization even away from the limit of perfectly isolated systems. We find that, in the limit of vanishing coupling to a bath, MBL systems come in two varieties, with either discrete or continuous local spectra. Both varieties of MBL systems exhibit a "soft gap" at zero frequency in the spatially-averaged spectral functions of local operators, which serves as a diagnostic for localiza…

We explore the finite-temperature dynamics of the quasi-1D orbital compass and plaquette Ising models. We map these systems onto a model of free fermions coupled to strictly localized spin-1/2 degrees of freedom. At finite temperature, the localized degrees of freedom act as emergent disorder and localize the fermions. Although the model can be analyzed using free-fermion techniques, it has dynamical signatures in common with typical many-body localized systems: Starting from generic initial states, entanglement grows logarithmically; in addition, equilibrium dynamical correlation functions de…
For random Lévy matrices of size $N \times N$, where matrix elements are drawn with some heavy-tailed distribution $P(H_{ij}) \propto N^{-1} |H_{ij} |^{-1-μ}$ with $0<μ<2$ (infinite variance), there exists an extensive number of finite eigenvalues $E=O(1)$, while the maximal eigenvalue grows as $E_{max} \sim N^{\frac{1}μ}$. Here we study the localization properties of the corresponding eigenvectors via some strong disorder perturbative expansion that remains consistent within the localized phase and that yields their Inverse Participation Ratios (I.P.R.) $Y_q$ as a function of the continuous p…
We demonstrate that a weak disorder in atomic positions introduces spatially localized optical modes in a dense three-dimensional ensemble of immobile two-level atoms arranged in a diamond lattice and coupled by the electromagnetic field. The frequencies of the localized modes concentrate near band edges of the unperturbed lattice. Finite-size scaling analysis of the percentiles of Thouless conductance reveals two mobility edges and yields an estimation $ν= 0.8$--1.1 for the critical exponent of the localization length. The localized modes disappear when the disorder becomes too strong and the…
In this paper we first compute the out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC) for both a phenomenological model and a random-field XXZ model in the many-body localized phase. We show that the OTOC decreases in power law in a many-body localized system at the scrambling time. We also find that the OTOC can also be used to distinguish a many-body localized phase from an Anderson localized phase, while a normal correlator cannot. Furthermore, we prove an exact theorem that relates the growth of the second Rényi entropy in the quench dynamics to the decay of the OTOC in equilibrium. This theorem works f…
Many-body localization is a striking mechanism that prevents interacting quantum systems from thermalizing. The absence of thermalization behaviour manifests itself, for example, in a remanence of local particle number configurations, a quantity that is robust over a parameter range. Local particle numbers are directly accessible in programmable quantum simulators, in systems of cold atoms even in two spatial dimensions. Yet, the classical simulation aimed at building trust in quantum simulations is highly challenging. In this work, we present a comprehensive tensor network simulation of a man…
We probe the existence of a many-body localized phase (MBL-phase) in a spinless fermionic Hubbard chain with algebraically localized single-particle states, by investigating both static and dynamical properties of the system. This MBL-phase can be characterized by an extensive number of integrals of motion which develop algebraically decaying tails, unlike the case of exponentially localized single-particle states. We focus on the implications for the quantum information propagation through the system. We provide evidence that the bipartite entanglement entropy after a quantum quench has an un…
We present an exact analytical method of engineering the localization of electromagnetic waves in a fractal waveguide network. It is shown that, a countable infinity of localized electromagnetic modes with a multitude of localization lengths can exist in a Vicsek fractal geometry built with diamond shaped monomode waveguides as the 'unit cells'. The family of localized modes form clusters of increasing size. The length scale at which the onset of localization for each mode takes place can be engineered at will, following a well defined prescription developed within the framework of a real spac…
We study the remanent magnetization in antiferromagnetic, many-body localized quantum spin chains, initialized in a fully magnetized state. Its long time limit is an order parameter for the localization transition, which is readily accessible by standard experimental probes in magnets. We analytically calculate its value in the strong-disorder regime exploiting the explicit construction of quasi-local conserved quantities of the localized phase. We discuss analogies in cold atomic systems.
The impact of geometry on many body localization is studied on simple, exemplary systems amenable to exact diagonalization treatment. The crossover between ergodic and MBL phase for uniform as well as quasi-random disorder is analyzed using statistics of energy levels. It is observed that the transition to many-body localized phase is correlated with the number of nearest coupled neighbors. The crossover from extended to localized systems is approximately described by the so called plasma model.
I discuss whether localization in the two dimensional continuum can be stable in the presence of short range interactions. I conclude that, for an impurity model of disorder, if the system is prepared below a critical temperature $T < T_c$, then perturbation theory about the localized phase converges almost everywhere. As a result, the system is at least asymptotically localized, and perhaps even truly many body localized, depending on how certain rare regions behave. Meanwhile, for $T > T_c$, perturbation theory fails to converge, which I interpret as interaction mediated delocalization. I ca…
Using exact numerical diagonalization, we investigate localization in two classes of random matrices corresponding to random graphs. The first class comprises the adjacency matrices of Erdos-Renyi (ER) random graphs. The second one corresponds to random cubic graphs, with Gaussian random variables on the diagonal. We establish the position of the mobility edge, applying the finite-size analysis of the inverse participation ratio. The fraction of localized states is rather small on the ER graphs and decreases when the average degree increases. On the contrary, on cubic graphs the fraction of lo…
We compare localization properties of one-dimensional Frenkel excitons with Gaussian and Lorentzian uncorrelated diagonal disorder. We focus on the states of the Lifshits tail, which dominate the optical response and low-temperature energy transport in molecular J-aggregates. The absence of exchange narrowing in chains with Lorentzian disorder is shown to manifest itself in the disorder scaling of the localization length distribution. Also, we show that the local exciton level structure of the Lifshits tail differs substantially for these two types of disorder: In addition to the singlets and …
Localization in one-dimensional disordered or quasiperiodic non-interacting systems in presence of power-law hopping is very different from localization in short-ranged systems. Power-law hopping leads to algebraic localization as opposed to exponential localization in short-ranged systems. Exponential localization is synonymous with insulating behavior in the thermodynamic limit. Here we show that the same is not true for algebraic localization. We show, on general grounds, that depending on the strength of the algebraic decay, the algebraically localized states can be actually either conduct…
Systems with quasiperiodic disorder are known to exhibit localization transition in low dimension. After a critical strength of disorder all the states of the system become localized, thereby ceasing the particle motion in the system. However, in our analysis we show that in a one dimensional dimerized lattice with staggered quasiperiodic disorder, after the localization transition some of the localized eigenstates become extended for a range of intermediate disorder strengths. Eventually, the system undergoes a second localization transition at a higher disorder strength leading to all states…
We consider d dimensional systems which are localized in the absence of interactions, but whose single particle (SP) localization length diverges near a discrete set of (single-particle) energies, with critical exponent ν. This class includes disordered systems with intrinsic- or symmetry-protected- topological bands, such as disordered integer quantum Hall insulators. In the absence of interactions, such marginally localized systems exhibit anomalous properties intermediate between localized and extended including: vanishing DC conductivity but sub-diffusive dynamics, and fractal entanglement…
Power-law interactions play a key role in a large variety of physical systems. In the presence of disorder, these systems may undergo many-body localization for a sufficiently large disorder. Within the many-body localized phase the system presents in time an algebraic growth of entanglement entropy, $S_{vN}(t)\propto t^γ$. Whereas the critical disorder for many-body localization depends on the system parameters, we find by extensive numerical calculations that the exponent $γ$ acquires a universal value $γ_c\simeq 0.33$ at the many-body localization transition, for different lattice models an…
We consider a quantum particle in a one-dimensional disordered lattice with Anderson localization, in the presence of multi-frequency perturbations of the onsite energies. Using the Floquet representation, we transform the eigenvalue problem into a Wannier-Stark basis. Each frequency component contributes either to a single channel or a multi-channel connectivity along the lattice, depending on the control parameters. The single channel regime is essentially equivalent to the undriven case. The multi-channel driving substantially increases the localization length for slow driving, showing two …
We compute the relative localization volumes of the vibrational eigenmodes in two-dimensional systems with a regular body but irregular boundaries under Dirichlet and under Neumann boundary conditions. We find that localized states are rare under Dirichlet boundary conditions but very common in the Neumann case. In order to explain this difference, we utilize the fact that under Neumann conditions the integral of the amplitudes, carried out over the whole system area is zero. We discuss, how this condition leads to many localized states in the low-frequency regime and show by numerical simulat…
Dynamical localization is the analog of Anderson localization in momentum space, where the system's energy saturates and the single-particle wave-functions are exponentially localized in momentum space. In the presence of interactions, in the context of a periodically kicked Bose gas, it has been argued that dynamical localization persists. Focusing on the Tonks (strongly interacting) regime, we show that the many-body dynamically localized phase is effectively thermal, a clear deviation from the breaking of ergodicity observed in standard many-body localized systems. We relate the effective t…
We consider a many-body localized system coupled globally to a central $d$-level system. Under an appropriate scaling of $d$ and $L$, we find evidence that the localized phase survives. We argue for two possible thermalizing phases, depending on whether the qudit becomes fully ergodic. This system provides one of the first examples of many-body localization in the presence of long-range (non-confining) interactions.
The spatial extension and complexity of the eigenfunctions of an open finite-size two-dimensional (2D) random system are systematically studied for a random collection of systems ranging from weakly scattering to localized. The eigenfunctions are obtained by introducing gain in the medium and pumping just above threshold. All lasing modes are found to correspond to quasimodes of the passive system, for all regimes of propagation. We demonstrate the existence of multipeaked quasimodes or necklace states in 2D at the transition from localized to diffusive, resulting from the coupling of localize…
We investigate dynamical quantum phase transitions in disordered quantum many-body models that can support many-body localized phases. Employing $l$-bits formalism, we lay out the conditions for which singularities indicative of the transitions appear in the context of many-body localization. Using the combination of the mapping onto $l$-bits and exact diagonalization results, we explicitly demonstrate the presence of these singularities for a candidate model that features many-body localization. Our work paves the way for understanding dynamical quantum phase transitions in the context of man…
An interacting quantum system that is subject to disorder may cease to thermalize due to localization of its constituents, thereby marking the breakdown of thermodynamics. The key to our understanding of this phenomenon lies in the system's entanglement, which is experimentally challenging to measure. We realize such a many-body-localized system in a disordered Bose-Hubbard chain and characterize its entanglement properties through particle fluctuations and correlations. We observe that the particles become localized, suppressing transport and preventing the thermalization of subsystems. Notab…
Localized states in one-dimensional open disordered systems and their connection to the internal structure of random samples have been studied. It is shown that the localization of energy and anomalously high transmission associated with these states are due to the existence inside the sample of a transparent (for a given resonant frequency) segment with the minimal size of order of the localization length. A mapping of the stochastic scattering problem in hand onto a deterministic quantum problem is developed. It is shown that there is no one-to-one correspondence between the localization and…
We investigate the localization behavior of vibrational modes of infinite percolation clusters above the critical concentration in two and three dimensions using the method of level statistics. We find that all eigenstates are localized in d=2, including the low frequency phonon states. In d=3 we obtain evidence for a localization-delocalization transition. But contrary to the common view this transition occurs for frequencies above the phonon fracton crossover giving rise to a new regime of extended fracton states.
