The recent discovery of superconductivity in oxygen-reduced monovalent nickelates has raised a new platform for the study of unconventional superconductivity, with similarities and differences with the cuprate high temperature superconductors. In this paper we investigate the family of infinite-layer nickelates $R$NiO$_2$ with rare-earth $R$ spanning across the lanthanide series, introducing a new and non-trivial "knob" with which to tune nickelate superconductivity. When traversing from La to Lu, the out-of-plane lattice constant decreases dramatically with an accompanying increase of Ni $ d_{x^2-y^2}$ bandwidth; however, surprisingly, the role of oxygen charge transfer diminishes. In contrast, the magnetic exchange grows across the lanthanides which may be favorable to superconductivity. Moreover, compensation effects from the itinerant $5d$ electrons present a closer analogy to Kondo lattices, indicating a stronger interplay between charge transfer, bandwidth renormalization, compensation, and magnetic exchange. We also obtain the microscopic Hamiltonian using Wannier downfolding technique, which will provide the starting point for further many-body theoretical studies.
The discovery of infinite layer nickelate superconductor marks the new era in the field of superconductivity. In the rare-earth (Re) nickelates ReNiO2, although the Ni is also of d9 electronic configuration, analogous to Cu d9 in cuprates, whether electronic structures in infinite-layer nickelate are the same as cuprate and possess the single band feature as well are still open questions. To illustrate the electronic structure of rare-earth infinite-layer nickelate, we perform first principle calculations of LaNiO2 and NdNiO2 compounds and compare them with that of CaCuO2 using hybrid function…
The consequences of varying the rare-earth element in the superconducting infinite-layer nickelates have been much debated. Here we show striking differences in the magnitude and anisotropy of the superconducting upper critical field across the La-, Pr-, and Nd-nickelates. These 5 distinctions originate from the 4f electron characteristics of the rare-earth ions in the lattice: they are absent for La3+, nonmagnetic for the Pr3+ singlet ground state, and magnetic for the Nd3+ Kramer's doublet. The unique polar and azimuthal angle-dependent magnetoresistance found in the Nd-nickelates can be und…
A microscopic model for the diluted spin-mixed compounds (R_xY_(1-x))_2BaNiO_5 (R=magnetic rare-earth) is studied using Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC). The ordering temperature is shown to be a universal function of the impurity concentration x and the intrinsic Ni-chain correlation length. An effective model for the critical modes is derived. The possibility of a quantum critical point driven by the rare earth-concentration and the existence of a Griffiths phase in the high dilution limit is investigated. Several possible experimental approaches to verify the results are put forward.
Recently, superconductivity was discovered in the infinite layer of hole-doped nickelates NdNiO$_{2}$. Contrary to this, superconductivity in LaNiO$_{2}$ is still under debate. This indicates the crucial role played by the $f$ electrons on the electronic structure and the pairing mechanism of infinite-layer nickelates. Here we discuss the role of the electron correlations on the $f$ electron states and their influence on the electronic structure. We show that the lattice parameters are in good agreement with the experimental values, independent of the chosen parameters within the DFT+$U$ appro…
Building upon the recent progress on the intriguing underlying physics for the newly discovered infinite-layer nickelates, in this article we review an examination of valence charge and spin excitations via multi-orbital Hubbard models as way to determine the fundamental building blocks for Hamiltonians that can describe the low energy properties of infinite-layer nickelates. We summarize key results from density-functional approaches, and apply them to the study of x-ray absorption to determine the valence ground states of infinite-layer nickelates in their parent form, and show that a fundam…
The observation of superconductivity in infinite layer nickelate (Nd,Sr)NiO$_{2}$ thin films has led to rapid theoretical and experimental investigations of these copper-oxide-analogue systems [1-15]. Superconductivity has also been found in (Pr,Sr)NiO$_{2}$ [16,17], but not previously in (La,Sr)NiO$_{2}$ [2], raising a fundamental question whether superconductivity is associated with the presence of rare-earth moments [18,19]. Here we show that with significant materials optimization, substantial portions of the La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{2}$ phase diagram can enter the regime of coherent low-te…
The search for oxide materials with physical properties similar to the cuprate high Tc superconductors, but based on alternative transition metals such as nickel, has grown and evolved over time. The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelates RNiO2 (R = rare-earth element) further strengthens these efforts. With a crystal structure similar to the infinite-layer cuprates - transition metal oxide layers separated by a rare-earth spacer layer - formal valence counting suggests that these materials have monovalent Ni1+ cations with the same 3d electron count as Cu2+ in…
We analyze the electronic structure of different surface terminations for infinite-layer nickelates. Surface NiO$_2$ layers are found to be buckled, in contrast to planar bulk layers. While the rare-earth terminated surface fermiology is similar to the bulk limit of the nickelates, the NiO$_2$ terminated surface band structure is significantly altered, originating from the effect of absence of rare-earth atoms on the crystal field splitting. Contrary to the bulk Fermi surfaces, there are two Ni-$3d$ Fermi pockets, giving rise to enhanced spectral weight around the $\bar{\text{M}}$ point in the…
After the reward of more than two decades of pursuit on the high-Tc cuprate analog with the hope to obtain a better understanding of the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity, the discovery of superconductivity in the infinite-layer nickelate brings more mystery to the picture than expected. Tops in the list of questions are perhaps (1) absence of superconductivity in the bulk nickelate and limited thickness of the infinite-layer phase in thin film, (2) absence of superconductivity in the La-nickelate despite it being the earliest studied rare-earth nickelate, and the role of 4f orbital in th…
We present a comparative density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) study of the two known superconducting members of the rare-earth (R) layered nickelate family: hole-doped RNiO$_{2}$ ($n=\infty$) and R$_{6}$Ni$_{5}$O$_{12}$ ($n=5$). At the same nominal carrier concentration, these two materials exhibit nearly identical electronic structures and many-body correlations effects: mass enhancements, self-energies, and occupations. However, the fermiology of the quintuple-layer nickelate is more two-dimensional-like than its infinite-layer counterpart making this new sup…
Based on first-principles calculations including a Coulomb repulsion term, we identify trends in the electronic reconstruction of $A$NiO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$(001) ($A=$ Pr, La) and $A$CuO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$(001) ($A=$ Ca, Sr). Common to all cases is the emergence of a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (q2DEG) in SrTiO$_3$(001), albeit the higher polarity mismatch at the interface of nickelates vs. cuprates to the nonpolar SrTiO$_3(001)$ substrate (${3+}/0$ vs. ${2+}/0$) results in an enhanced q2DEG carrier density. The simulations reveal a significant dependence of the interfacial Ti $3d_{xy}$ band bendi…
The discovery of unconventional superconductivity in hole doped NdNiO2, similar to CaCuO2, has received enormous attention. However, different from CaCuO2, RNiO2 (R = Nd, La) has itinerant electrons in the rare-earth spacer layer. Previous studies show that the hybridization between Ni-dx2-y2 and rare-earth-d orbitals is very weak and thus RNiO2 is still a promising analog of CaCuO2. Here, we perform first-principles calculations to show that the hybridization between Ni-dx2-y2 orbital and itinerant electrons in RNiO2 is substantially stronger than previously thought. The dominant hybridizatio…
Superconducting nickelates appear to be difficult to synthesize. Since the chemical reduction of ABO3 (A: rare earth; B transition metal) with CaH2 may result in both, ABO2 and ABO2H, we calculate the topotactic H binding energy by density functional theory (DFT). We find intercalating H is energetically favorable for LaNiO2 but not for Sr-doped NdNiO2. This has dramatic consequences for the electronic structure as determined by DFT+dynamical mean field theory: that of 3d9 LaNiO2 is similar to (doped) cuprates, 3d8 LaNiO2H is a two-orbital Mott insulator. Topotactical H might hence explain why…

The current view depicts these systems as a new category of superconducting materials, as they appear to be correlated metals with distinct multiband features in their phase diagram. Here, we provide an overview of the state of the art in this rapidly evolving topic.

Recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observation of U-shaped and V-shaped spectra (and their mixture) in superconducting Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ thin films has been interpreted as presence of two distinct gap symmetries in this nickelate superconductor [Gu et al., Nat. Comm. 11, 6027 (2020)]. Here, using a two-band model of nickelates capturing dominant contributions from Ni-$3d_{x^2-y^2}$ and rare-earth (R)-$5d_{3z^2 - r^2}$ orbitals, we show that the experimental observation can be simply explained within a pairing scenario characterized by a conventional $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave gap structu…

We report the phase diagram of infinite layer Pr$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_2$ thin films synthesized via topotactic reduction from the perovskite precursor phase using CaH$_2$. Based on the electrical transport properties, we find a doping-dependent superconducting dome extending between $x$ = 0.12 and 0.28, with a maximum superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm{c}}$ of 14 K at $x$ = 0.18, bounded by weakly insulating behavior on both sides. In contrast to the narrower dome observed in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_2$, a local $T_{\rm{c}}$ suppression near $x$ = 0.2 was not observed for the Pr$_{1-x…
We calculate the specific heat and susceptibility of rare-earth magnetic superconductors in the context of the Ginzburg-Landau theory. The specific heat and susceptibility are calculated both at the coexistence phase of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity and normal phase. Theoretical results are compared with experimental results, which agree excellently well.
The discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates brings us tantalizingly close to a new material class that mirrors the cuprate superconductors. Here, we report on magnetic excitations in these nickelates, measured using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ni L3-edge, to shed light on the material complexity and microscopic physics. Undoped NdNiO2 possesses a branch of dispersive excitations with a bandwidth of approximately 200 meV, reminiscent of strongly-coupled, antiferromagnetically aligned spins on a square lattice, despite a lack of evidence for long range m…
Recently, superconductivity at about 9-15K was discovered in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ infinite-layer thin films, which has stimulated enormous interests in related rare-earth nickelates. Usually, the first step to synthesize this 112 phase is to fabricate the RNiO$_3$ phase, however, it was reported that the 113 phase is very difficult to be synthesized successfully due to the formation of unusual Ni$^{3+}$ oxidation state. And the difficulty of preparation is enhanced as the ionic radius of rare-earth element decreases. In this work, we report the synthesis and investigation on multiple physic…
A variety of nickel oxide compounds have long been studied for their manifestation of various correlated electron phenomena. Recently, superconductivity was observed in nanoscale infinite layer nickelate thin films of Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$, epitaxially stabilized on SrTiO$_3$ substrates via topotactic reduction from the perovskite precursor phase. Here we present the synthesis and properties of PrNiO$_2$ thin films on SrTiO$_3$. Upon doping in Pr$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$, we observe superconductivity with a transition temperature of 7-12 K, and robust critical current density at 2 K of 3…
The discovery of infinite-layer nickelate superconductors has spurred enormous interest. While the Ni$^{1+}$ cations possess nominally the same 3$d^9$ configuration as Cu$^{2+}$ in cuprates, the electronic structure variances remain elusive. Here, we present a soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy study on parent and doped infinite-layer Pr-nickelate thin films with a doped perovskite reference. By identifying the Ni character with resonant photoemission and comparison to density functional theory + U (on-site Coulomb repulsion energy) calculations, we estimate U ~5 eV, smaller than the charge…
In this work we study the effect of the rare earth element in iron oxypnictides of composition REFeAsO (RE=rare earth). On one hand we carry out Density Functional Theory calculations of the band structure, which evidence the multiband character of these compounds and the presence of Dirac cones along the Y-Γ and Z-R directions of the reciprocal space. On the other hand, we explore transport behavior by means of resistivity, Hall resistance and magnetoresistance measurements, which confirm the dominant role of Dirac cones. By combining our theoretical and experimental approaches, we extract in…
The discovery of superconductivity in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$ [1] introduced a new family of layered nickelate superconductors that has now been extended to include a range of Sr-doping [2, 3], Pr or La in place of Nd [4-6], and the 5-layer Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ [7]. A number of studies indicate that electron correlations are strong in these materials [8-14], and hence a central question is whether or not magnetism is present as a consequence of these interactions. Here we report muon spin rotation/relaxation studies of a series of superconducting infinite-layer nickelates. In all cases we …
Charge order is a central feature of the physics of cuprate superconductors and is known to arise from a modulation of holes with primarily oxygen character. Low-valence nickelate superconductors also host charge order, but the electronic character of this symmetry breaking is unsettled. Here, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Ni $L_2$-edge, we identify intertwined involvements of Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$, $3d_{3z^2-r^2}$, and O $2p_σ$ orbitals in the formation of diagonal charge order in an overdoped low-valence nickelate La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$. The Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals, strong…
This article summarizes recent work on the many-body (beyond density functional theory) electronic structure of layered rare-earth nickelates, both in the context of the materials themselves and in comparison to the high-temperature superconducting (high-$T_c$) layered copper-oxide compounds. It aims to outline the current state of our understanding of layered nickelates and to show how the analysis of these fascinating materials can shed light on fundamental questions in modern electronic structure theory. A prime focus is determining how the interacting physics defined over a wide energy ran…
Employing first-principles density functional theory calculations and Wannierization of the low energy band structure, we analyze the electronic structure of undoped, infinite-layer nickelate compounds, NdNiO$_2$, PrNiO$_2$ and LaNiO$_2$. Our study reveals important role of non-zero $f$-ness of Nd and Pr atoms, as opposed to $f^{0}$ occupancy of La. The non-zero $f$-ness becomes effective in lowering the energy of the rare-earth 5$d$ hybridized axial orbital, thereby enhancing the electron pockets and influencing the Fermi surface topology. The Fermi surface topology of NdNiO$_2$ and PrNiO$_2$…
Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the copper oxide materials, there have been sustained efforts to both understand the origins of this phase and discover new cuprate-like superconducting materials. One prime materials platform has been the rare-earth nickelates and indeed superconductivity was recently discovered in the doped compound Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$. Undoped NdNiO$_2$ belongs to a series of layered square-planar nickelates with chemical formula Nd$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ and is known as the 'infinite-layer' ($n = \infty$) nickelate. Here, we report the s…
Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelate thin films, we report on a synthesis and magnetization study on bulk samples of the parent compounds ${R}$NiO$_{2}$ (${R}$=La, Pr, Nd). The frequency-dependent peaks of the AC magnetic susceptibility, along with remarkable memory effects, characterize spin-glass states. Furthermore, various phenomenological parameters via different spin glass models show strong similarity within these three compounds as well as with other rare-earth metal nickelates. The universal spin-glass behaviour distinguishes the nickelate…
We theoretically investigate the unconventional superconductivity in the newly discovered infinite-layer nickelates Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{2}$ based on a two-band model. By analyzing the transport experiments, we propose that the doped holes dominantly enter the Ni $d_{xy}$ or/and $d_{3z^{2}-r^{2}}$ orbitals as charged carriers, and form a conducting band. Via the onsite Hund coupling, the doped holes are coupled to the Ni localized holes in the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ orbital band. We demonstrate that this two-band model could be further reduced to a Hund-Heisenberg model. Using the reduced model,…
In strongly correlated materials, lattice, charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom interact with each other, leading to emergent physical properties such as superconductivity, colossal magnetic resistance and metal-insulator transition. Quasi-2D square planar nickelates, Rn+1NinO2n+2 (R=rare earth, n=2, 3...), are of significant interest and long sought for cuprate analogue due to the 3d9 electronic configuration of Ni+, the same as the active ion Cu2+ in the high-Tc superconducting cuprates. The field has attracted intense attention since 2019 due to the discovery of superconductivity in …

The interplay between dimensionality and various phases of matter is a central inquiry in condensed matter physics. New phases are often discovered through spontaneously broken symmetry. Understanding the dimensionality of superconductivity in the high-temperature cuprate analogue $-$ layered nickelates and revealing a new symmetry-breaking state are the keys to deciphering the underlying pairing mechanism. Here, we demonstrate the highly-tunable dimensionality and a broken rotational symmetry state in the superconductivity of square-planar layered nickelates. The superconducting state, probed…
