Through inelastic scattering cross section measurements for $^{42-51}$Ca on a carbon target at 280 MeV/nucleon recently, Tanaka {\it et al.} [ arXiv:1911.05262 [nucl-ex]], in a very significant experiment, have demonstrated large swelling of doubly magic $^{48}$Ca core in calcium isotopes beyond N=28. The matter radii observed in these experiments, are surprisingly much larger than the corresponding, already amazingly large charge radii of the same calcium isotopes, by Garcia {\it et al.} [Nat. Phys. 12 (2016) 594]. Here we propose a novel solution, wherein the breathing mode states $0^{+}$ of $^{48}$Ca, provide a global and consistent solution of this matter radii conundrum.
T. Li {\it et al.}[Phys. Rev. C {\bf 81}, 034309 (2010)] have analyzed their measured breathing-mode energies of some tin isotopes in terms of a first-order leptodermous expansion, and find for the symmetry-incompressibility coefficient $K_τ$ the value of -550 $\pm$ 100 MeV. Removing an approximation that they made, we find that the first-order estimate of $K_τ$ shifts to -661 $\pm$ 144 MeV. However, taking into account higher-order terms in the leptodermous expansion shows that the data are compatible with the significantly lower magnitudes indicated by both another experiment and some theore…
We investigate the neutron number $(N)$ dependence of root mean square radii of point proton distribution (proton radii) of Be, B, and C isotopes with the theoretical method of variation after spin-parity projection in the framework of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD). The proton radii in Be and B isotopes changes rapidly as $N$ increases, reflecting the cluster structure change along the isotope chains, whereas, those in C isotopes show a weak $N$ dependence because of the stable proton structure in nuclei with $Z=6$. In neutron-rich Be and B isotopes, the proton radii are remarkably …
Quadrupole moments and charge radii in cadmium isotopes are studied from a microscopic perspective. The results obtained from self-consistent deformed Hartree-Fock+BCS calculations with Skyrme forces are compared with isomer and isotope shifts measured from high resolution laser spectroscopy experiments. The microscopic calculations reproduce fairly well the main features observed in those isotopes that include the linear increase with the neutron number of the quadrupole moments of the 11/2- isomers, as well as the parabolic behavior of the mean-square charge radii difference between isomers …
Charge radii of Sn, Ba, Yb, and Pb isotopes are calculated within Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with a Skyrme force and a density-dependent delta-force pairing. We investigate mean field effects of the pairing upon odd-even staggering of isotope shifts. HFB equations are solved in the canonical basis. Odd nuclei are treated in the blocking approximation.
The evolution of the ground-state nuclear shapes in neutron-rich Sr, Zr, and Mo isotopes, including both even-even and odd-A nuclei, is studied within a self-consistent mean-field approximation based on the D1S Gogny interaction. Neutron separation energies and charge radii are calculated and compared with available data. A correlation between a shape transition and a discontinuity in those observables is found microscopically. While in Sr and Zr isotopes the steep behavior observed in the isotopic dependence of the charge radii is a consequence of a sharp prolate-oblate transition, the smooth…
A feed-forward neural network model is trained to calculate the nuclear charge radii. The model trained with input data set of proton and neutron number $Z,N$, the electric quadrupole transition strength $B(E2)$ from the first excited 2$^+$ state to the ground state, together with the symmetry energy. The model reproduces well not only the isotope dependence of charge radii, but also the kinks of charge radii at the neutron magic numbers $N=82$ for Sn and Sm isotopes, and also $N=126$ for Pb isotopes. The important role of $B(E2)$ value is pointed out to reproduce the kink of the isotope depen…
Recently, charge radii and ground-state electromagnetic moments of Li and Be isotopes were measured precisely. We have performed large-scale ab initio no-core shell model calculations for these isotopes using high-precision nucleon-nucleon potentials. The isotopic trends of our computed charge radii and quadrupole and magnetic-dipole moments are in good agreement with experimental results with the exception of the 11Li charge radius. The magnetic moments are in particular well described, whereas the absolute magnitudes of the quadrupole moments are about 10% too small. The small magnitude of t…
We compute the charge radii of even-mass neon and magnesium isotopes from neutron number N = 8 to the dripline. Our calculations are based on nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon potentials from chiral effective field theory that include delta isobars. These potentials yield an accurate saturation point and symmetry energy of nuclear matter. We use the coupled-cluster method and start from an axially symmetric reference state. Binding energies and two-neutron separation energies largely agree with data and the dripline in neon is accurate. The computed charge radii have an estimated uncertainty o…
Recently, precision laser spectroscopy on 6He atoms determined accurately the isotope shift between 4He and 6He and, consequently, the charge radius of 6He. A similar experiment for 8He is under way. We have performed large-scale ab initio calculations for 4,6,8He isotopes using high-precision nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions within the no-core shell model (NCSM) approach. With the CD-Bonn 2000 NN potential we found point-proton root-mean-square (rms) radii of 4He and 6He 1.45(1) fm and 1.89(4), respectively, in agreement with experiment and predict the 8He point proton rms radius to be 1.88(…
We study the effects of short- and long-range correlations on the charge radii of Ca isotopes. We start our investigation with an independent particle model consisting in Hartree-Fock plus Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer calculations with finite-range effective nucleon-nucleon interactions of Gogny type. The short-range correlations effects are evaluated by considering all the terms of a cluster expansion containing a single correlation line. The long-range correlations are taken into account by including the coupling with the quasi-particle random phase approximation phonons. While the effects of t…
The anomalous behaviour of the charge radii of the isotopic chain of Pb nuclei has been studied in the relativistic mean field theory. It has been shown that the relativistic mean field provides an excellent description of the anomalous kink in the isotopic shifts about $^{208}$Pb. This contrasts strongly from the Skyrme mean field, where almost all the known and realistic forces fail to reproduce the observed trend in the empirical data on the charge radii. The results have been discussed in the perspective of differences in the ansätze of the relativistic and the Skyrme mean-field theories.
We apply the recently proposed RMF(BCS)* ansatz to study the charge radii of the potassium isotopic chain up to $^{52}$K. It is shown that the experimental data can be reproduced rather well, qualitatively similar to the Fayans nuclear density functional theory, but with a slightly better description of the odd-even staggerings (OES). Nonetheless, both methods fail for $^{50}$K and to a lesser extent for $^{48,52}$K. It is shown that if these nuclei are deformed with a $β_{20}\approx-0.2$, then one can obtain results consistent with experiments for both charge radii and spin-parities. We argue…

We study the breathing oscillations in bose-fermi mixtures with Yb isotopes in the largely prolate deformed trap, which are realized by Kyoto group. We choose the three combinations of the Yb isotopes, Yb170-Yb171, Yb170-Yb173 and Yb174-Yb173, whose boson-fermion interactions are weakly repulsive, strongly attractive and strongly repulsive. The collective oscillations in the deformed trap are calculated in the dynamical time-development approach, which is formulated with the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii and the Vlasov equations. We analyze the results in the time-development approach with t…
The self-consistent continuum Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory formulated with Green's function technique in the coordinate space is developed to investigate odd-$A$ nuclei by incorporating the blocking effect. In a calculation performed with the SLy4 parameter for the neutron-rich Mg isotopes with $A=36-42$ around the neutron shell closure N=28, the odd-even staggering in the neutron rms radius, i.e., a larger value in $^{39}$Mg than those in $^{38}$Mg and $^{40}$Mg, is found. The large neutron radius in $^{39}$Mg is due to the blocking effect on the pair correlation energy, for which th…
The interpretation of future precise experiments on atomic parity violation in terms of parameters of the Standard Model could be hampered by uncertainties in the atomic and nuclear structure. While the former can be overcome by measurement in a series of isotopes, the nuclear structure requires knowledge of the neutron density. We use the nuclear Hartree-Fock method, which includes deformation effects, to calculate the proton and neutron densities in {125}Cs-{139}Cs. We argue that the good agreement with the experimental charge radii, binding energies, and ground state spins signifies that th…
Using the surface tension energy put in dependence on the number of alpha-clusters in the core in a phenomenological model representing a nucleus as a core and a nuclear molecule on its surface leads to widening the number of isotopes to be described from the narrow strip of beta-stability to the isotopes with N >= Z. The number of alpha-clusters in the molecule is obtained from the analysis of experimental binding energies and the specific density of the core binding energy ρand the radii are calculated. It is shown that for the isotopes of one Z with growing A the number of alpha-clusters of…
I have investigated the $N$-dependence of the charge radii $r_c$ across $N=126$ in the Pb isotopes and the surface densities of $^{208}$Pb using new Skyrme interactions that contain a density-dependent spin-orbit term, which I have named the Skyrme-ddso interactions. I have compared the results obtained using Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations that employ the Skyrme-ddso interactions with the original Skyrme results and have discussed the effects of including the density-dependent spin-orbit term. The results for the kink behavior of $r_c$ at $N=126$ in the Pb isotopes were improved b…
In this new era of radioactive beam facilities, the discovery of novel modes of excitation in nuclei far away from stability represents an area of intense research activity. In addition, these modes of excitation appear to be sensitive to the uncertain density dependence of the symmetry energy. We study the emergence, evolution, and nature of both the soft and giant isoscalar monopole modes as a function of neutron excess in three unstable Nickel isotopes: 56Ni, 68Ni, and 78Ni. The distribution of isoscalar monopole strength is computed in a relativistic random-phase approximation using severa…
Root-mean-square charge radii are discussed in terms of spherical Energy Density Functional (EDF) models corrected for quadrupole deformations. Comparisons between experiment and theory are made for the absolute radii of all even-even nuclei, for the isotonic shift between cadmium and tin isotopes, the isotopic shifts of the calcium isotopes and the isotonic shift for nuclei with $ N=28 $. We conclude that the data are well described in this approach, except for the sharp rise just after the neutron magic numbers.
A simple superfluid model with an effective four body interaction of monopole pairing type is used to explain the staggering of the charge radii in the isotope chains. The contribution of deformation and of the particle number projection are analyzed for the Sn isotopes. Good results are obtained for the staggering parameters and neutron pairing energies.

A systematic study of the ground state properties of transitional nuclei W, Os and Pt is conducted with the help of Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. Different Skyrme interactions are employed in the study. Two different bases, harmonic oscillator and transformed harmonic oscillator, are used in our investigation. 2n-separation energy, charge radii, neutron and proton rms radii, neutron skin thickness and deformation parameter have been estimated. The results obtained are in good agreement with the available experimental values.
In this work, Na isotopes with mass varying from $A=$ 20 to 31 have been studied using DJ16A, JISP16 and N3LO microscopic effective interactions in the $sd$-shell. These effective interactions are derived for $sd$-shell using no-core shell model wavefunctions and a unitary transformation method. We have also performed calculation with IMSRG effective interactions targeted for a particular nucleus. The studies include a detailed analysis of ground state binding energy, low-lying spectra, and electromagnetic properties such as reduced electric quadrupole transition strengths, quadrupole and magn…
Systematic trends in nuclear charge radii are of great interest due to universal shell effects and odd-even staggering (OES). The modified root mean square (rms) charge radius formula, which phenomenologically accounts for the formation of neutron-proton ($np$) correlations, is here applied for the first time to the study of odd-$Z$ copper and indium isotopes. Theoretical results obtained by the relativistic mean field (RMF) model with NL3, PK1 and NL3$^{*}$ parameter sets are compared with experimental data. Our results show that both OES and the abrupt changes across $N=50$ and $82$ shell cl…
We analyze recently-measured total reaction cross sections for 24-38Mg isotopes incident on 12C targets at 240 MeV/nucleon by using the folding model and antisymmetrized molecular dynamics(AMD). The folding model well reproduces the measured reaction cross sections, when the projectile densities are evaluated by the deformed Woods-Saxon (def-WS) model with AMD deformation. Matter radii of 24-38Mg are then deduced from the measured reaction cross sections by fine-tuning the parameters of the def-WS model. The deduced matter radii are largely enhanced by nuclear deformation. Fully-microscopic AM…
The ground state properties including radii, density distribution and one neutron separation energy for C, N, O and F isotopes up to the neutron drip line are systematically studied by the fully self-consistent microscopic Relativistic Continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory. With the proton density distribution thus obtained, the charge-changing cross sections for C, N, O and F isotopes are calculated using the Glauber model. Good agreement with the data has been achieved. The charge changing cross sections change only slightly with the neutron number except for proton-rich nuclei. Similar…
The accuracy of atomic theory calculations limits the extraction of nuclear charge radii from isotope shift measurements of odd-proton nuclei. For Na isotopes, though precise spectroscopic measurements have existed since more than half a century, calculations by different methods offer a wide range of values. Here, we present accurate atomic calculations to reliably extract the Na charge radii. By combining experimental matter radii with nuclear coupled-cluster calculations based on nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces, we constrain the parameters obtained from the atomic calculations. The…
We perform simultaneous analysis of (1) matter radii, (2) $B(E2; 0^+ \rightarrow 2^+ )$ transition probabilities, and (3) excitation energies, $E(2^+)$ and $E(4^+)$, for $^{24-40}$Mg by using the beyond mean-field (BMF) framework with angular-momentum-projected configuration mixing with respect to the axially symmetric $β_2$ deformation with infinitesimal cranking. The BMF calculations successfully reproduce all of the data for $r_{\rm m}$, $B(E2)$, and $E(2^+)$ and $E(4^+)$, indicating that it is quite useful for data analysis, particularly for low-lying states. We also discuss the absolute v…
We present a systematic study of both nuclear radii and binding energies in (even) oxygen isotopes from the valley of stability to the neutron drip line. Both charge and matter radii are compared to state-of-the-art {\it ab initio} calculations along with binding energy systematics. Experimental matter radii are obtained through a complete evaluation of the available elastic proton scattering data of oxygen isotopes. We show that, in spite of a good reproduction of binding energies, {\it ab initio} calculations with conventional nuclear interactions derived within chiral effective field theory…
Electronic factors for the field and mass isotope shifts in the $6p\ ^{2}P_{3/2} \to 7s\ ^{2}S_{1/2}$ (535 nm), $6p\ ^{2}P_{1/2} \to 6d\ ^{2}D_{3/2}$ (277 nm) and $6p\ ^{2}P_{1/2} \to 7s\ ^{2}S_{1/2}$ (378~nm) transitions in the neutral thallium were calculated within the high-order relativistic coupled cluster approach. These factors were used to reinterpret previous experimental isotope shift measurements in terms of charge radii of a wide range of Tl isotopes. Good agreement between theoretical and experimental King-plot parameters was found for the $6p\ ^{2}P_{3/2} \to 7s\ ^{2}S_{1/2}$ and…
The Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) theory is applied to the analysis of ground-state properties of Ne, Na, Cl and Ar isotopes. In particular, we study the recently established proton skin in Ar isotopes and neutron skin in Na isotopes as a function of the difference between the proton and the neutron separation energy. We use the TMA effective interaction in the RMF Lagrangian, and describe pairing correlation by the density-independent delta-function interaction. We calculate single neutron and proton separation energies, quadrupole deformations, nuclear matter radii and differences between pr…
A systematic study of the ground-state properties of even-even rare earth nuclei has been performed in the framework of the Relativistic Mean-Field (RMF) theory using the parameter set NL-SH. Nuclear radii, isotope shifts and deformation properties of the heavier rare-earth nuclei have been obtained, which encompass atomic numbers ranging from Z=60 to Z=70 and include a large range of isospin. It is shown that RMF theory is able to provide a good and comprehensive description of the empirical binding energies of the isotopic chains. At the same time the quadrupole deformations $β_{2}$ obtained…
Collinear laser spectroscopy is performed on the nickel isotopes $^{58-68,70}$Ni, using a time-resolved photon counting system. From the measured isotope shifts, nuclear charge radii $R_c$ are extracted and compared to theoretical results. Three ab initio approaches all employ, among others, the chiral interaction NNLO$_{\rm sat}$, which allows an assessment of their accuracy. We find agreement with experiment in differential radii $δ\left\langle r_\mathrm{c}^2 \right\rangle$ for all employed ab initio methods and interactions, while the absolute radii are consistent with data only for NNLO$_{…
Despite being a complex many-body system, the atomic nucleus exhibits simple structures for certain "magic" numbers of protons and neutrons. The calcium chain in particular is both unique and puzzling: evidence of doubly-magic features are known in 40,48Ca, and recently suggested in two radioactive isotopes, 52,54Ca. Although many properties of experimentally known Ca isotopes have been successfully described by nuclear theory, it is still a challenge to predict their charge radii evolution. Here we present the first measurements of the charge radii of 49,51,52Ca, obtained from laser spectrosc…
A systematic study of energy spectra throughout the rare-earth region (even-even nuclei from $_{58}$Ce to $_{74}$W) is carried out in the framework of the interacting boson model (IBM), leading to an accurate description of the spherical-to-deformed shape transition in the different isotopic chains. The resulting IBM Hamiltonians are then used for the calculation of nuclear charge radii (including isotope and isomer shifts) and electric monopole transitions with consistent operators for the two observables. The main conclusion of this study is that an IBM description of charge radii and electr…
The ground-state properties of neutron-rich exotic Na and Mg isotopes with even numbers of neutrons, N, are studied up to driplines. The shell-model calculations with an ab initio effective nucleon-nucleon interaction reported in [Tsunoda, Otsuka, Takayanagi et al., Nature 587, 66 (2020)] are extended to observables such as magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments, and charge and matter radii. Good agreements with experimental data are found, and predictions are shown up to driplines. A prescription to extract the deformation parameters for the eigenstates of Monte Carlo Shell Model is …
In previous work it was shown that the radius of nucleus R is determined by the alpha-cluster structure and can be estimated on the number of alpha-clusters disregarding to the number of excess neutrons. A hypothesis also was made that the radius R_m of a beta-stable isotope, which is actually measured at electron scattering experiments, is determined by the volume occupied by the matter of the core plus the volume occupied by the peripheral alpha-clusters. In this paper it is shown that the condition R_m = R restricts the number of excess neutrons filling the core to provide the beta-stabilit…
We analyze the isoscalar response related to breathing modes with particular attention being paid to low-lying excitations in neutron--rich nuclei. We use the subtracted second random--phase approximation (SSRPA) to describe microscopically the response. By increasing the neutron excess, we study the evolution of the response in Ca isotopes going from $^{40}$Ca to $^{48}$Ca and to $^{60}$Ca as well as in $N=20$ isotones going from $^{40}$Ca to $^{36}$S and to $^{34}$Si. Finally, the case of $^{68}$Ni is investigated. We predict soft monopole modes in neutron--rich nuclei which are driven by ne…
Background: Nuclear radius is one of the most important and basic properties of atomic nuclei and its evolution is closely related to the saturation of the nuclear density in the internal region but the systematics of the nuclear radii for the neutron-rich unstable nuclei is not well known. Purpose: Motivated by the recent interaction cross section measurement which indicates the 48Ca core swelling in the neutron-rich Ca isotopes, we explore the mechanism of the enhancement of the neutron and proton radii for spherical nuclei. Methods: Microscopic Hartree-Fock calculations with three sets of S…
Nuclear charge radii of $^{55,56}$Ni were measured by collinear laser spectroscopy. The obtained information completes the behavior of the charge radii at the shell closure of the doubly magic nucleus $^{56}$Ni. The trend of charge radii across the shell closures in calcium and nickel is surprisingly similar despite the fact that the $^{56}$Ni core is supposed to be much softer than the $^{48}$Ca core. The very low magnetic moment $μ(^{55}\mathrm{Ni})=-1.108(20)\,μ_N$ indicates the impact of M1 excitations between spin-orbit partners across the $N,Z=28$ shell gaps. Our charge-radii results are…
We studied the charge radius, rms radius and neutron skin thickness $Δr_{np}$ in even-even isotopes of Si, S, Ar and Ca and isotones of N =20, 28, 50 and 82. The $Δr_{np}$ in doubly-magic $^{48}$Ca, $^{68}$Ni, $^{120,132}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb nuclei has also been calculated. Theoretical calculations are done with the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with the effective Skyrme interactions. Calculated theoretical estimates are in good agreement with the recently available experimental data. The charge radii for Si, S, Ar and Ca isotopes is observed to be minimum at neutron number N =14. The theoretic…
The neutron halo structure of $^{6}$He and of $^{8}$He is studied in a microscopic three-body and five-body model, respectively. Various cluster arrangements are included to embody a variety of correlations between the clusters. The intercluster wave function is determined with the stochastic variational method. The $^{6}$He and $^{8}$He energies are reproduced with the same effective force very well. The radii and densities are compared with the results of empirical analyses. The calculated difference of the neutron and proton radii exceeds 0.8 fm, confirming the thick neutron skin. The two-n…
The mesoscopic nature of the atomic nucleus gives rise to a wide array of macroscopic and microscopic phenomena. The size of the nucleus is a window into this duality: while the charge radii globally scale as $A^{1/3}$, their evolution across isotopic chains reveals unanticipated structural phenomena [1-3]. The most ubiquitous of these is perhaps the Odd-Even Staggering (OES) [4]: isotopes with an odd number of neutrons are usually smaller in size than the trend of their even-neutron neighbours suggests. This OES effect varies with the number of protons and neutrons and poses a significant cha…
The possible exotic nuclear properties in the neutron-rich Ca, Ni, Zr, and Sn isotopes are explored with the continuum Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory formulated with the Green's function method. The available experimental two-neutron separation energies $S_{\rm 2n}$ and one-neutron separation energies $S_{\rm n}$ are well reproduced. Much shorter drip lines predicted by $S_{\rm n}$ are obtained compared with those by $S_{\rm 2n}$. The systematic studies of the neutron pairing energies $-E_{\rm pair}$ shown that values of the odd-$A$ nuclei are much smaller in comparison with those of th…
