Under ABC, Silverman showed that there are infinitely many non-Wieferich primes with respect to any (non-trivial) base $a$. Recently Srinivas and Subramani proved an analogous result over number fields with trivial class group. In the first part of this article, we extend their result to any arbitrary number fields. Secondly, we give an asymptotic lower bound for the number of non-Wieferich prime ideals. Furthermore, we show a lower bound of same order is achievable for non-Wieferich prime ideals having norm congruent to $1 \pmod k.$ Lastly, we generalize Silverman's work for elliptic curves over arbitrary number fields following the treatment by Kühn and Müller.
In this paper, we define $X$-base Fibonacci-Wieferich prime which is a generalized Wieferich prime where $X$ is a finite set of algebraic numbers. We are going to show that there are infinitely many non-$X$-base Fibonacci-Wieferich primes assuming the $abc$-conjecture of Masser-Oesterlé-Szpiro for number fields. We also provide a new conjecture concerning the rank of free part of abelian group generated by all elements in $X$, and we will use the arithmetic point of view and geometric point of view to give heuristic.
We prove the lower bound for the number of Lucas non-Wieferich primes in arithmetic progressions. More precisely, for any given integer $k\geq 2$ there are $\gg \log x$ Lucas non-Wieferich primes $p\leq x$ such that $p\equiv\pm1\pmod{k}$, assuming the $abc$ conjecture for number fields. Further, we discuss some applications of Lucas sequences in Cryptography.
Let $K/\mathbb{Q}$ be an algebraic number field of class number one and $\mathcal{O}_K$ be its ring of integers. We show that there are infinitely many non-Wieferich primes with respect to certain units in $\mathcal{O}_K$ under the assumption of the \textit{abc} conjecture for number fields.
In this paper, we introduce a Carlitz module analogue of Mersenne primes, and prove Carlitz module analogues of several classical results concerning Mersenne primes. In contrast to the classical case, we can show that there are infinitely many composite Mersenne numbers. We also study the acquaintances of Mersenne primes including Wieferich and non-Wieferich primes in the Carlitz module context that were first introduced by Dinesh Thakur.
Let $q$ be a power of a prime number $p$, $\mathbb F_q$ be a finite field with $q$ elements and $\mathcal{G}$ be a subgroup of $(\mathbb F_q,+)$ of order $p$. We give an existence criterion and an algorithm for computing maximally $\mathcal{G}$-fixed c-Wieferich primes in $\mathbb F_q[T]$. Using the criterion, we study how c-Wieferich primes behave in $\mathbb F_q[T]$ extensions.
We show that the $abc$ conjecture of Masser-Oesterlé-Szpiro for number fields implies that there are infinitely many non-Fibonacci-Wieferich primes. We also provide a new heuristic for the number of such primes beneath a certain value.
Let $n$ be a positive integer, $p$ be an odd prime and integers $a,b \not= 0$ with $gcd(a,b)=1$, $p \nmid ab$, and $p|(a^n \pm b^n)$, we prove the identity $$ν_p(a^n \pm b^n)-ν_p(n)=ν_p(a^{p-1}-b^{p-1}).$$ An unintended interesting immediate consequence is the following variant of Wieferich's criterion for FLT : Let $x^n+y^n=z^n$ with $n$ prime and $x,y,z$ pairwise relatively prime. Then every odd prime $p|y$ satisfies $ν_p(z^{p-1}-x^{p-1}) \ge n-1$ and every odd prime $p|x$ satisfies $ν_p(z^{p-1}-y^{p-1}) \ge n-1$, and every odd prime $p|z$ satisfies $ν_p(x^{p-1}-y^{p-1}) \ge n-1$, ie. every …
We introduce a new class of pseudoprimes-so called "overpseudoprimes" which is a special subclass of super-Poulet pseudoprimes. Denoting via h(n) the multiplicative order of 2 modulo n, we show that odd number n is overpseudoprime iff value of h(n) is invariant of all divisors d>1 of n. In particular, we prove that all composite Mersenne numbers 2^p-1,where p is prime, and squares of Wieferich primes are overpseudoprimes. We give also a generalization of the results on arbitrary base a>1 and prove that every overpseudoprime is strong pseudoprime of the same base.
We consider questions in Galois cohomology which arise by considering mod $p$ Galois representations arising from automorphic forms. We consider a Galois cohomological analog for the standard heuristics about the distribution of Wieferich primes, i.e. prime $p$ such that $2^{p-1}$ is 1 mod $p^2$. Our analog relates to asking if in a compatible system of Galois representations, for almost all primes $p$, the residual mod $p$ representation arising from it has unobstructed deformation theory. This analog leads in particular to formulating a mod $p$ analog for almost all primes $p$ of the classic…
In this short note we show that the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields puts strong restrictions on the coordinates of rational points on elliptic curves. For the proof we use a variant of the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields formulated by Mochizuki. As an application, we generalize a result of Silverman on elliptic non-Wieferich primes.
In this paper, we prove the lower bound for the number of balancing non-Wieferich primes in arithmetic progressions. More precisely, for any given integer $r\geq2$ there are $\gg\log x$ balancing non-Wieferich primes $p\leq x$ such that $p\equiv\pm1 \pmod{r}$, under the assumption of the $abc$ conjecture for the number field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2})$. Further, we discuss some applications of balancing sequences in cryptography.
The Fermat quotient $q_p(a):=(a^{p-1}-1)/p$, for prime $p\nmid a$, and the Wilson quotient $w_p:=((p-1)!+1)/p$ are integers. If $p\mid w_p,$ then $p$ is a Wilson prime. For odd $p,$ Lerch proved that $(\sum_{a=1}^{p-1} q_p(a) - w_p)/p$ is also an integer; we call it the Lerch quotient $\ell_p.$ If $p\mid\ell_p$ we say $p$ is a Lerch prime. A simple Bernoulli-number test for Lerch primes is proven. There are four Lerch primes 3, 103, 839, 2237 up to $3\times10^6$; we relate them to the known Wilson primes 5, 13, 563. Generalizations are suggested. Next, if $p$ is a non-Wilson prime, then $q_p(w…
In this paper we prove new cases of the asymptotic Fermat equation with coefficients. This is done by solving remarkable $S$-units equations and applying a method of Frey-Mazur.
Let K be a number field, let f(x) in K(x) be a rational function of degree d> 1, and let z in K be a wandering point such that f^n(z) is nonzero for all n > 0. We prove that if the abc-conjecture holds for K, then for all but finitely many positive integers n, there is a prime p of K such that p | f^n(z) and p does not divide f^m(z) for all positive integers m < n. We prove the same result unconditionally for function fields of characteristic 0 when f is not isotrivial.
Let $φ_p(z)=(z-1)^p+2-ζ_p$, where $ζ_p\in\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ is a primitive $p$-th root of unity for some odd prime $p$. Building on previous work, we show that the $n$-th iterate $φ_p^n(z)$ has Galois group $[C_p]^n$, an iterated wreath product of cyclic groups, whenever $p$ is not a Wieferich prime.
Let $p>3$ be a prime. Euler numbers $E_{p-3}$ first appeared in H. S. Vandiver's work (1940) in connection with the first case of Fermat Last Theorem. Vandiver proved that $x^p+y^p=z^p$ has no solution for integers $x,y,z$ with $\gcd(xyz,p)=1$ if $E_{p-3}\equiv 0 (\bmod p)$. Numerous combinatorial congruences recently obtained by Z.-W. Sun and by Z.-H. Sun involve the Euler numbers $E_{p-3}$. This gives a new significance to the primes $p$ for which $E_{p-3}\equiv 0 (\bmod p)$. For the computation of residues of Euler numbers $E_{p-3}$ modulo a prime $p$, we use the congruence which runs signi…
The abc conjecture, one of the most famous open problems in number theory, claims that three positive integers satisfying a+b=c cannot simultaneously have significant repetition among their prime factors; in particular, the product of the distinct primes dividing the three integers should never be much less than c. Triples of numbers satisfying a+b=c are called abc triples if the product of their distinct prime divisors is strictly less than c. We catalog what is known about abc triples, both numerical examples found through computation and infinite familes of examples established theoreticall…
Our main source of inspiration was a talk by Hendrik Lenstra on harmonic numbers, which are numbers whose only prime factors are two or three. Gersonides proved 675 years ago that one can be written as a difference of harmonic numbers in only four ways: 2-1, 3-2, 4-3, and 9-8. We investigate which numbers other than one can or cannot be written as a difference of harmonic numbers and we look at their connection to the $abc$-conjecture. We find that there are only eleven numbers less than 100 that cannot be written as a difference of harmonic numbers (we call these $ndh$-numbers). The smallest …
Let $K$ be a number field or a function field of characteristic 0. If $K$ is a number field, assume the $abc$-conjecture for $K$. We prove a variant of Zsigmondy's theorem for ramified primes in preimage fields of rational functions in $K(x)$ that are not postcritically finite. For example, suppose $K$ is a number field and $f\in K[x]$ is not postcritically finite, and let $K_n$ be the field generated by the $n$th iterated preimages under $f$ of $β\in K$. We show that for all large $n$, there is a prime of $K$ that ramifies in $K_n$ and does not ramify in $K_m$ for any $m<n$.
We introduce a new class of pseudoprimes-so called "overpseudoprimes to base $b$", which is a subclass of strong pseudoprimes to base $b$. Denoting via $|b|_n$ the multiplicative order of $b$ modulo $n$, we show that a composite $n$ is overpseudoprime if and only if $|b|_d$ is invariant for all divisors $d>1$ of $n$. In particular, we prove that all composite Mersenne numbers $2^{p}-1$, where $p$ is prime, are overpseudoprime to base 2 and squares of Wieferich primes are overpseudoprimes to base 2. Finally, we show that some kinds of well known numbers are overpseudoprime to a base $b$.
This paper studies integer solutions to the ABC equation A+B+C=0 in which none of A, B, C has a large prime factor. Set H(A,B, C)= max(|A|,|B|,|C|) and set the smoothness S(A, B, C) to be the largest prime factor of ABC. We consider primitive solutions (gcd(A, B, C)=1) having smoothness no larger than a fixed power p of log H. Assuming the abc Conjecture we show that there are finitely many solutions if p<1. We discuss a conditional result, showing that the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH) implies there are infinitely many primitive solutions when p>8. We sketch some details of the proof o…
In this short note we confirm the relation between the generalized $abc$-conjecture and the $p$-rationality of number fields. Namely, we prove that given K$/\mathbb{Q}$ a real quadratic extension or an imaginary $S_3$-extension, if the generalized $abc$-conjecture holds in K, then there exist at least $c\,\log X$ prime numbers $p \leq X$ for which K is $p$-rational, here $c$ is some nonzero constant depending on K. The real quadratic case was recently suggested by Böckle-Guiraud-Kalyanswamy-Khare.
The abc conjecture is one of the most famous unsolved problems in number theory. The conjecture claims for each real $ε> 0$ that there are only a finite number of coprime positive integer solutions to the equation $a+b = c$ with $c > (rad(a b c))^{1+ε}$. If true, the abc conjecture would imply many other famous theorems and conjectures as corollaries. In this paper, we discuss the abc conjecture and find new applications to powerful numbers, which are integers $n$ for which $p^2 | n$ for every prime $p$ such that $p | n$. We answer several questions from an earlier paper on this topic, assumin…
Record values are determined for the order $|\Sha|$ of the Tate--Shafarevich group of an elliptic curve $E$, computed analytically by the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, and for the Goldfeld--Szpiro ratio $G=|\Sha|/\sqrt{N}$, where $N$ is the conductor of $E$. The curves have rank zero and are isogenous to quadratic twists of Frey curves constructed from coprime positive integers $(a,b,c)$ with $a+b=c$ and $c>r^{1.4}$, where the radical $r$ is the product of the primes dividing $abc$. Curves with $|\Sha|>250000^2$ and $G>12$ are found in 20 isogeny classes. Three curves have $G>150$. The la…
We show that, modulo some odd prime p, the powers of two weighted sum of the first p-2 divided Bernoulli numbers equals the Agoh-Giuga quotient plus twice the number of permutations on p-2 letters with an even number of ascents and distinct from the identity. We provide a combinatorial characterization of Wieferich primes, as well as of primes p for which p^2 divides the Fermat quotient q_p(2).
We consider a variant of the ABC Conjecture, attempting to count the number of solutions to $A+B+C=0$, in relatively prime integers $A,B,C$ each of absolute value less than $N$ with $r(A)<|A|^a, r(B)<|B|^b, r(C)<|C|^c.$ The ABC Conjecture is equivalent to the statement that for $a+b+c<1$, the number of solutions is bounded independently of $N$. If $a+b+c \geq 1$, it is conjectured that the number of solutions is asymptotically $N^{a+b+c-1 \pm ε}.$ We prove this conjecture as long as $a+b+c \geq 2.$
Let $N$ be an odd perfect number and let $a$ be its third largest prime divisor, $b$ be the second largest prime divisor, and $c$ be its largest prime divisor. We discuss steps towards obtaining a non-trivial upper bound on $a$, as well as the closely related problem of improving bounds $bc$, and $abc$. In particular, we prove two results. First we prove a new general bound on any prime divisor of an odd perfect number and obtain as a corollary of that bound that $$a < 2N^{\frac{1}{6}}.$$ Second, we show that $$abc < (2N)^{\frac{3}{5}}.$$ We also show how in certain circumstances these bounds …
This paper provides a survey of results on the greatest prime factor, the number of distinct prime factors, the greatest squarefree factor and the greatest m-th powerfree part of a block of consecutive integers, both without any assumption and under assumption of the abc-conjecture. Finally we prove that the explicit abc-conjecture implies the Erdős-Woods conjecture for each k>2.
Let $P(m)$ denote the greatest prime factor of $m$. For integer $a>1$, M. Ram Murty and S. Wong proved that, under the assumption of the ABC conjecture, $$P(a^n-1)\gg_{ε, a} n^{2-ε}$$ for any $ε>0$. We study analogues results for the corresponding divisibility sequence over the function field $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ and for some divisibility sequences associated to elliptic curves over the rational field $\mathbb{Q}$.
Let $p$ and $l$ be rational primes such that $l$ is odd and the order of $p$ modulo $l$ is even. For such primes $p$ and $l$, and for $e=l, 2l$, we consider the non-singular projective curves $aY^e = bX^e + cZ^e$ ($abc \neq 0$) defined over finite fields $\mathbf{F}_q$ such that $q=p^α\equiv 1(\bmod {e})$. We see that the Fermat curves correspond precisely to those curves among each class (for $e=l,2l$), that are maximal or minimal over $\mathbf{F}_q$. We observe that each Fermat prime gives rise to explicit maximal and minimal curves over finite fields of characteristic 2. For $e=2l$, we expl…
In the present article, we extend previous results of the author and we show that when $K$ is any quadratic imaginary field of class number one, Fermat's equation $a^p+b^p+c^p=0$ does not have integral coprime solutions $a,b,c \in K \setminus \{ 0 \}$ such that $2 \mid abc$ and $p \geq 19$ is prime. The results are conjectural upon the veracity of a natural generalisation of Serre's modularity conjecture.
Let $f(x) \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$; for each integer $α$ it is interesting to consider the number of iterates $n_α$, if possible, needed to satisfy $f^{n_α}(α) = α$. The sets $\{α, f(α), \ldots, f^{n_α - 1}(α), α\}$ generated by the iterates of $f$ are called cycles. For $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ it is known that cycles of length 1 and 2 occur, and no others. While much is known for extensions to number fields, we concentrate on extending $\mathbb{Z}$ by adjoining reciprocals of primes. Let $\mathbb{Z}[1/p_1, \ldots, 1/p_n]$ denote $\mathbb{Z}$ extended by adding in the reciprocals of the $n$ primes $p_1, \ld…
Clemm and Trebat-Leder (2014) proved that the number of quadratic number fields with absolute discriminant bounded by $x$ over which there exist elliptic curves with good reduction everywhere and rational $j$-invariant is $\gg x\log^{-1/2}(x)$. In this paper, we assume the $abc$-conjecture to show the sharp asymptotic $\sim cx\log^{-1/2}(x)$ for this number, obtaining formulae for $c$ in both the real and imaginary cases. Our method has three ingredients: (1) We make progress towards a conjecture of Granville: Given a fixed elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ with short Weierstrass equation $y^2 = f…
We prove several results which imply the following consequences. For any $\varepsilon>0$ and any sufficiently large prime $p$, if $\cI_1,\ldots, \cI_{13}$ are intervals of cardinalities $|\cI_j|>p^{1/4+\varepsilon}$ and $abc\not\equiv 0\pmod p$, then the congruence $$ ax_1\cdots x_6+bx_7\cdots x_{13}\equiv c\pmod p $$ has a solution with $x_j\in\cI_j$. There exists an absolute constant $n_0\in\N$ such that for any $0<\varepsilon<1$ and any sufficiently large prime $p$, any quadratic residue $λ$ modulo $p$ can be represented in the form $$ x_1\cdots x_{n_0}\equiv λ\pmod p,\quad x_i\in\N,\quad x…
