The Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE) is an important quantity in determining the properties and understanding the behavior of the two-dimensional electron system forming at the interface of SrTiO3-based oxide heterostructures. The occurrence of AHE is often interpreted as a signature of ferromagnetism, but it is becoming more and more clear that also paramagnets may contribute to AHE. We studied the influence of magnetic ions by measuring intermixed LaAlO3/GdTiO3/SrTiO3 at temperatures below 10 K. We find that, as function of gate voltage, the system undergoes a Lifshitz transition, while at the same time an onset of AHE is observed. However, we do not observe clear signs of ferromagnetism. We argue the AHE to be due to the change in Rashba spin-orbit coupling at the Lifshitz transition and conclude that also paramagnetic moments which are easily polarizable at low temperatures and high magnetic filds lead to the presence of AHE, which needs to be taken into account when extracting carrier densities and mobilities.
Using first principles density functional theory calculations, we show how Rashba-type energy band splitting in the hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites APbX$_3$ (A=CH$_3$NH$_3^+$, CH(NH$_2$)$_2^+$, Cs$^+$ and X=I, Br) can be tuned and enhanced with electric fields and anisotropic strain. In particular, we demonstrate that the magnitude of the Rashba splitting of tetragonal (CH$_3$NH$_3$)PbI$_3$ grows with increasing macroscopic alignment of the organic cations and electric polarization, indicating appreciable tunability with experimentally-feasible applied fields, even at room temperat…
Large Rashba effect efficiently tuned by an external electric field is highly desired for spintronic devices. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that large Rashba splitting is locked at conduction band minimum in ferroelectric Bi(Sc/Y/La/Al/Ga/In)O3/PbTiO3 heterostructures where the position of Fermi level is precisely controlled via its stoichiometry. Fully reversible Rashba spin texture and drastic change of Rashba splitting strength with ferroelectric polarization switching are realized in the symmetric and asymmetric heterostructures, respectively. By artificially tuning t…
By detailed first-principles calculations we show that the Fermi energy and the Rashba splitting in disordered ternary surface alloys (BiPbSb)/Ag(111) can be independently tuned by choosing the concentrations of Bi and Pb. The findings are explained by three fundamental mechanisms, namely the relaxation of the adatoms, the strength of the atomic spin-orbit coupling, and band filling. By mapping the Rashba characteristics,i.e.the splitting and the Rashba energy, and the Fermi energy of the surface states in the complete range of concentrations. Our results suggest to investigate experimentally …
In this letter, we investigated the Rashba effect of the CsPbBr$_3$ bilayers under the external electric field (EEF), with the first-principles calculations. For the PbBr$_2$ terminated bilayer, we found that only electrons experience the Rashba splitting under EEF, while holes do not. Such n-type Rashba effect can be ascribed to the surface relaxation effect that reverse the position of the top valence bands. The n-type Rashba parameter can be tuned monotonically to the maximum of 0.88 eV $Å$ at EEF of 1.35 V/nm at which the sequence of top valence bands recover to the bulk style. During this…
Spin splitting of Rashba states in two-dimensional electron system provides a promising mechanism of spin manipulation for spintronics applications. However, Rashba states realized experimentally to date are often outnumbered by spin-degenerated substrate states at the same energy range, hindering their practical applications. Here, by density functional theory calculation, we show that Au one monolayer film deposition on a layered semiconductor surface beta-InSe(0001) can possess "ideal" Rashba states with large spin splitting, which are completely situated inside the large band gap of the su…
Composite quantum compounds (CQCs) have become an important avenue for the investigation of inter-correlation between two distinct phenomenon in physics. Topological superconductors, axion insulators etc. are few such CQCs which have recently drawn tremendous attention in the community. Topological nontriviality and Rashba spin physics are two different quantum phenomena but can be intertwined within a CQC platform. In this letter, we present a general symmetry based mechanism, supported by \textit{ab-initio} calculations to achieve intertwined giant Rashba splitting and topological non-trivia…
The complex oxide heterostructures such as LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) interface are paradigmatic platforms to explore emerging multi-degrees of freedom coupling and the associated exotic phenomena. In this study, we reveal the effects of multiorbital and magnetic ordering on Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) at the LAO/STO (001) interface. Based on first-principles calculations, we show that the Rashba spin splitting near the conduction band edge can be tuned substantially by the interfacial insulator-metal transition due to the multiorbital effect of the lowest t_2g bands. We further unravel a co…
Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in conjunction with broken inversion symmetry acts as a key ingredient for several intriguing quantum phenomena viz. persistent spin textures, topological surface states and Rashba-Dresselhaus (RD) effects. The coexistence of spontaneous polarization and the RD effect in ferroelectric materials enables the electrical control of spin degree of freedom. In light of this, we explore here the ferroelectric lead halide perovskite viz. CsPbF$_3$ as a potential candidate in the field of spintronics by employing state-of-the-art first-principles based methodologies viz. densi…
Inorganic-organic lead halide perovskites, particularly methylammonium lead halide (MAPbI$_3$) perovskite, is perceived to be a promising material for optoelectronics and spintronics. However, lead toxicity and instability under air and moisture restrict its practical uses. Hence, it is essential to reduce lead extent by substituting appropriate alternatives. Here, we substitute Sn and Ge in cubic MAPbI$_3$ and compare various properties of hybrid perovskites by employing state-of-the-art first-principles-based methodologies, viz., density functional theory (DFT) with semilocal and hybrid func…
We show that the Rashba effect at the polar perovskite surfaces and interfaces can be tuned by manipulating the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) by an applied electric field, using it to draw the 2DEG out to the surface or push it deeper into the bulk, thereby controlling the surface-sensitive phenomenon. These ideas are illustrated by a comprehensive density-functional study of the recently-discovered polar KTaO$_3$ surface. Analytical results obtained with a tight-binding model unravel the interplay between the various factors affecting the Rashba effect such as the strength of the spin-o…
We report a giant Rashba-type spin splitting in two-dimensional heterostructure PtSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$ with first-principles calculations. We obtain a large value of spin splitting energy 110 meV at the momentum offset $k_0$=0.23 Å$^{-1}$ around $\mathrmΓ$ point, arising from the emerging strong interfacial spin-orbital coupling induced by the hybridization between PtSe$_2$ and MoSe$_2$. Moreover, we find that the band dispersion close to valence band maximum around $Γ$ point can be well approximated by the generalized Rashba Hamiltonian $H(k_{||})=-\frac{\hbar^2 k_{||}^2}{2m}+c k_{||}+α_R \vecσ\cd…
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers MXY (M=Mo, W, X(not equal to)Y=S, Se, Te) are two-dimensional polar semiconductors. Setting WSeTe monolayer as an example and using density functional theory calculations, we investigate the manipulation of Rashba spin orbit coupling (SOC) in the MXY monolayer. It is found that the intrinsic out-of-plane electric field due to the mirror symmetry breaking induces the large Rashba spin splitting around the Gamma point, which, however, can be easily tuned by applying the in-plane biaxial strain. Through a relatively small strain (from -2% to 2%), a…
In this paper, spintronic properties of the mono-layer GaTe under biaxial and uniaxial strain is investigated. Here, spin properties of two structures of GaTe, one with mirror symmetry and the other with inversion symmetry, is studied. We have also calculated the band structure of GaTe with and without spin-orbit coupling to find out the importance of spinorbit interaction (SOI) on its band structure. We find band gap can be modified by applying spin-orbit coupling in the presence of strain. We explore Mexican-hat dispersion for different structures and different strain. We find Mexican-hat ca…
The recent development in the fabrication of artificial oxide heterostructures opens new avenues in the field of quantum materials by enabling the manipulation of the charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom. In this context, the discovery of two-dimensional electron gases (2-DEGs) at LAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces, which exhibit both superconductivity and strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC), represents a major breakthrough. Here, we report on the realisation of a field-effect LaAlO3/SrTiO3 device, whose physical properties, including superconductivity and SOC, can be tuned over a wide range b…
Van der Waals heterostructures formed by stacking different types of 2D materials are attracting increasing attention due to new emergent physical properties such as interlayer excitons. Recently synthesized atomically thin indium selenide (InSe) and antimony (Sb) individually exhibit interesting electronic properties such as high electron mobility in the former and high hole mobility in the latter. In this work, we present a first-principles investigation on the stability and electronic properties of ultrathin bilayer heterostructures composed of InSe and Sb single layers. The calculated elec…
The experimental assessment of the strength ($α_R$) of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling is rather indirect and involves the measurement of the spin relaxation length from magnetotransport, together with a model of weak antilocalization. The analysis of the spin relaxation length in nanowires, however, clouds the experimental assessment of the $α_R$ and leads to the prevailing belief that it can be tuned freely with electric field--a central tenant of spintronics. Here, we report direct theory of $α_R$ leading to atomistic calculations of the spin band structure of InAs nanowires upon application…
We investigate theoretically how the spin-orbit Dresselhaus and Rashba effects influence the electronic structure of quasi-one-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots, similar to those that can be formed inside semiconductor nanorods. We calculate electronic energy levels, eigen-functions, and effective g-factors for coupled, double dots made out of different materials, especially GaAs and InSb. We show that by choosing the form of the lateral confinement, the contributions of the Dresselhaus and Rashba terms can be tuned and suppressed, and we consider several possible cases of interest. We al…
We develop an InAs nanowire gate-all-around field-effect transistor using a transparent conductive zinc oxide (ZnO) gate electrode, which is in-situ atomic layer deposited after growth of gate insulator of Al2O3. We perform magneto-transport measurements and find a crossover from weak localization to weak antilocalization effect with increasing gate voltage, which demonstrates that the Rashba spin-orbit coupling is tuned by the gate electrode. The efficiency of the gate tuning of the spin-orbit interaction is higher than those obtained for two-dimensional electron gas, and as high as that for …
Spin-orbit effects appearing in topological insulators (TI) and at Rashba interfaces are currently revolutionizing how we can manipulate spins and have led to several newly discovered effects, from spin-charge interconversion and spin-orbit torques to novel magnetoresistance phenomena. In particular, a puzzling magnetoresistance has been evidenced, bilinear in electric and magnetic fields. Here, we report the observation of bilinear magnetoresistance (BMR) in strained HgTe, a prototypical TI. We show that both the amplitude and sign of this BMR can be tuned by controlling, with an electric gat…
A novel topological insulator with tunable edge states, called quantum spin-quantum anomalous Hall (QSQAH) insulator, is predicted in a heterostructure of a hydrogenated Sb (SbH) monolayer on a LaFeO3 substrate by using ab initio methods. The substrate induces a drastic staggered exchange field in the SbH film, which plays an important role to generate the QSQAH effect. A topologically nontrivial band gap (up to 35 meV) is opened by Rashba spin-orbit coupling, which can be enlarged by strain and electric field. To understand the underlying physical mechanism of the QSQAH effect, a tight-bindin…
Spin orbit coupling (SOC) is the key to realizing time-reversal invariant topological phases of matter. Famously, SOC was predicted by Kane and Mele to stabilize a quantum spin Hall insulator; however, the weak intrinsic SOC in monolayer graphene has precluded experimental observation. Here, we exploit a layer-selective proximity effect---achieved via van der Waals contact to a semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide--to engineer Kane-Mele SOC in ultra-clean \textit{bilayer} graphene. Using high-resolution capacitance measurements to probe the bulk electronic compressibility, we find th…
