We study the dynamics of correlations in a paradigmatic setup to observe $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric physics: a pair of coupled oscillators, one subject to a gain one to a loss. Starting from a coherent state, quantum correlations (QCs) are created, despite the system being driven only incoherently, and can survive indefinitely. $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking is accompanied by non-zero stationary QCs. We link $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking to the long-time behavior of both total and QCs, which display different scalings in the $\mathcal{PT}$-broken/unbroken phase and at the exceptional point (EP). This is analytically shown and quantitatively explained in terms of entropy balance. The EP in particular stands out as the most classical configuration.
In the present work we propose a generalization of tunneling time in parity and time ($\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$)-symmetric systems. The properties of tunneling time in $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric systems are studied with a simple contact interactions periodic finite size diatomic $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric model. The physical meaning of negative tunneling time in $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric systems and its relation to spectral singularities is discussed.
We study the scattering properties of $N$ identical one-dimensional localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potentials, connected in series as well as in parallel. We derive a general transfer matrix formalism for parallel coupled quantum scatterers, and apply that theory to demonstrate that the spectral singularities and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric transitions of single scattering cells may be observed in coupled systems, at the same or distinct values of the critical parameters, depending on the connection modes under which the scattering objects are coupled. We analyse the influences of the connect…
In this article, we have introduced a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian model which is given as $\hat{\mathcal{H}}=ω(\hat{b}^†\hat{b}+1/2)+ α(\hat{b}^{2}-(\hat{b}^†)^{2})$ where $ω$ and $α$ are real constants, $\hat{b}$ and $\hat{b^†}$ are first order differential operators. The Hermitian form of the Hamiltonian $\mathcal{\hat{H}}$ is obtained by suitable mappings and it is interrelated to the time independent one dimensional Dirac equation in the presence of position dependent mass. Then, Dirac equation is reduced to a Schrödinger-like equation and two new complex non-$\mathc…
In this letter we discuss a phase transition-like anomalous behavior of Faraday rotation angles in a simple parity-time ($\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$) symmetric model with two complex $δ$-potential placed at both boundaries of a regular dielectric slab. In anomalous phase, the value of one of Faraday rotation angles may turn negative, and both angles suffer spectral singularities and yield strong enhancement near singularities.
We investigate $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric quantum systems ultra-weakly coupled to an environment. We find that such open systems evolve under $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric, purely dephasing and unital dynamics. The dynamical map describing the evolution is then determined explicitly using a quantum canonical transformation. Furthermore, we provide an explanation of why $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric dephasing type interactions lead to \emph{critical slowing down of decoherence}. This effect is further exemplified with an experimentally relevant system -- a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal…
We propose a non-Hermitian deformation of the Mathieu equation that preserves $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry and study its spectrum and the transition from $\mathcal{PT}$-unbroken to $\mathcal{PT}$-broken phases. We show that our model not only reproduces behaviors expected by the literature but also indicates the existence of a richer structure for the spectrum. We also discuss the influence of the boundary condition and the model parameters in the exceptional line that marks the $\mathcal{PT}$ breaking.
We investigate a two-level spin system based anti-parity-time (anti-$\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric qubit and study its decoherence as well as entanglement entropy properties. We compare our findings with that of the corresponding $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and Hermitian qubits. First we consider the time-dependent Dyson map to find the exact analytical dynamics for a general non-Hermitian qubit system coupled with a bath, then we specialize it to the case of the anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric qubit. We find that the decoherence function for the anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric qubit decays slower than th…
Non-Hermitian parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) and anti-parity-time ($\mathcal{APT}$)-symmetric systems exhibit novel quantum properties and have attracted increasing interest. Although many counterintuitive phenomena in $\mathcal{PT}$- and $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric systems were previously studied, coherence flow has been rarely investigated. Here, we experimentally demonstrate single-qubit coherence flow in $\mathcal{PT}$- and $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric systems using an optical setup. In the symmetry unbroken regime, we observe different periodic oscillations of coherence. Particularly, we observe…
We develop further the concept of generalized extended momentum operator (GEMO), which has been introduced very recently in \citep{M.H2}, and propose the so called $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric GEMO. In analogy with GEMO, the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric GEMO also satisfies the extended uncertainty principle (EUP) relation. Moreover, the corresponding Hamiltonian that is constructed upon the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric GEMO, with a real or $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potential, remains non-Hermitian but $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and consequently its energy and momentum eigenvalues are real. We apply our forma…
$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, namely, a combined parity and time-reversal symmetry can make non-unitary quantum walks exhibit entirely real eigenenergy. However, it is known that the concept of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can be generalized and an arbitrary anti-unitary symmetry has a possibility to substitute $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. The aim of the present work is to seek such non-unitary quantum walks with generalized $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry by focusing on effects of spatially random disorder which breaks $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. We numerically find non-unitary quantum walks whose quasi-energy is ent…
We propose and analyze a new approach based on parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric microcavities with balanced gain and loss to enhance the performance of cavity-assisted metrology. We identify the conditions under which $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric microcavities allow to improve sensitivity beyond what is achievable in loss-only systems. We discuss its application to the detection of mechanical motion, and show that the sensitivity is significantly enhanced in the vicinity of the transition point from unbroken- to broken-$\mathcal{PT}$ regimes. We believe that our results open a new direction …
Open systems with gain, loss, or both, described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, have been a research frontier for the past decade. In particular, such Hamiltonians which possess parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry feature dynamically stable regimes of unbroken symmetry with completely real eigenspectra that are rendered into complex conjugate pairs as the strength of the non-Hermiticity increases. By subjecting a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system to a periodic (Floquet) driving, the regime of dynamical stability can be dramatically affected, leading to a frequency-dependent threshold for the $…
In the past years, many efforts have been made to study various noteworthy phenomena in both parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) and anti-parity-time ($\mathcal{APT}$) symmetric systems. However, entanglement dynamics in $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric systems has not previously been investigated in both theory and experiments. Here, we investigate the entanglement evolution of two qubits in an $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric system. In the $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric unbroken regime, our theoretical simulations demonstrate the periodic oscillations of entanglement when each qubit evolves identically, while the no…
In this work, we show that a universal quantum work relation for a quantum system driven arbitrarily far from equilibrium extend to $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum system with unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, which is a consequence of microscopic reversibility. The quantum Jarzynski equality, linear response theory and Onsager reciprocal relations for the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum system are recovered as special cases of the universal quantum work relation in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum system. In the regime of broken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, the universal quantum work relation d…
We study a generalized Aubry-Andre model that obeys $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. We observe a robust $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase with respect to system size and disorder strength, where all eigenvalues are real despite the Hamiltonian being non-hermitian. This robust $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase can support an Anderson localization transition, giving a rich phase diagram as a result of the interplay between disorder and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. Our model provides a perfect platform to study disorder-driven localization phenomena in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system.
The parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric structures have exhibited potential applications in developing various robust quantum devices. In an optical trimmer with balanced loss and gain, we analytically study the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric phase transition by investigating the spontaneous symmetric breaking. We also illustrate the single-photon transmission behaviors in both of the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric and $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry broken phases. We find (i) the non-periodical dynamics of single-photon transmission in the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry broken phase instead of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetr…
In addition to the implementation of parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric optical systems by carefully and actively controlling the gain and loss, we show that a $2\times 2$ $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian has a unitarily equivalent representation without complex optical potentials in the resulting optical coupler. Through the Naimark dilation in operator algebra, passive $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric couplers can thus be implemented with a refractive index of real values and asymmetric coupling coefficients. This opens up the possibility to implement general $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems…
Non-Hermitian systems with anti-parity-time ($\mathcal{APT}$) symmetry have revealed rich physics beyond conventional systems. Here, we study optomechanics in an $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric spinning resonator and show that, by tuning the rotating speed to approach the exceptional point (EP) or the non-Hermitian spectral degeneracy, nonreciprocal light transmission with a high isolation ratio can be realized. Accompanying this process, nonreciprocal group delay or advance is also identified in the vicinity of EP. Our work sheds new light on manipulating laser propagation with optomechanical EP de…
Over the past decade, non-Hermitian, $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians have been investigated as candidates for both, a fundamental, unitary, quantum theory, and open systems with a non-unitary time evolution. In this paper, we investigate the implications of the former approach in the context of the latter. Motivated by the invariance of the $\mathcal{PT}$ (inner) product under time evolution, we discuss the dynamics of wave-function phases in a wide range of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric lattice models. In particular, we numerically show that, starting with a random initial state, a universal…
Non-hermitian, $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians, experimentally realized in optical systems, accurately model the properties of open, bosonic systems with balanced, spatially separated gain and loss. We present a family of exactly solvable, two-dimensional, $\mathcal{PT}$ potentials for a non-relativistic particle confined in a circular geometry. We show that the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry threshold can be tuned by introducing a second gain-loss potential or its hermitian counterpart. Our results explicitly demonstrate that $\mathcal{PT}$ breaking in two dimensions has a rich phase diagram, …
We study the cross-stitch flat band lattice with a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric on-site potential and uncover mobility edges with exact solutions. Furthermore, we study the relationship between the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry broken point and the localization-delocalization transition point, and verify that mobility edges in this non-Hermitian model is available to signal the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking.
We theoretically study the dynamics of typical optomechanical systems, consisting of a passive optical mode and an active mechanical mode, in the $\mathcal{PT}$- and broken-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regimes. By fully analytical treatments for the dynamics of the average displacement and particle numbers, we reveal the phase diagram under different conditions and the various regimes of both $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and stability of the system. We find that by appropriately tuning either mechanical gain or optomechanical coupling, both phase transitions of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and stability…
$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric models with a Wick rotation of time ($ t \rightarrow \pm i t$) show spectral phase transitions that are similar to those of dissipative systems driven out of equilibrium. Optics can provide an accessible test bed to explore spectral phase transitions of Wick-rotated $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric models. This is shown by considering the transverse dynamics of laser light in optical cavities with variable reflectivity and tilted mirrors. As examples, we discuss in details the optical analogue of the hydrodynamic Squire model of vorticity and the Wick-rotated $\mathcal{PT}$-sy…
We study a two-species mixture of exciton-polaritons with self- and cross-interaction nonlinearities in a double well structure, in the presence of relaxation and continuous pumping. We identify the conditions that render the system parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric, and investigate its dynamic and static properties. We show that the system can exhibit long-term coherent oscillations of populations of the two polaritonic components between the two potential wells, and can simulate the dynamics of a pair of spin-1/2 particles (qubits) in the presence of exchange interaction.
We consider wave transport phenomena in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric extension of the periodically-kicked quantum rotator model and reveal that dynamical localization assists the unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$ phase. In the delocalized (quantum resonance) regime, $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry is always in the broken phase and ratchet acceleration arises as a signature of unidirectional non-Hermitian transport. An optical implementation of the periodically-kicked $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian, based on transverse beam propagation in a passive optical resonator with combined phase and loss gratings, is …
We present results concerning aspects of quantum thermodynamics under the background of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics for the dynamics of a quantum harmonic oscillator. Since a better control over the parameters in quantum thermodynamics processes is desired, we use concepts from collisional model to introduce a simple prototype of thermal reservoir based on $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians and study its effects under the thermalization process of a single harmonic oscillator prepared in a displaced thermal state. We verify that controlling the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric features of the r…
We review the methodology to theoretically treat parity-time- ($\mathcal{PT}$-) symmetric, non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems... (For the full abstract see paper)
A series of geometric concepts are formulated for $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum mechanics and they are further unified into one entity, i.e., an extended quantum geometric tensor (QGT). The imaginary part of the extended QGT gives a Berry curvature whereas the real part induces a metric tensor on system's parameter manifold. This results in a unified conceptual framework to understand and explore physical properties of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems from a geometric perspective. To illustrate the usefulness of the extended QGT, we show how its real part, i.e., the metric tensor, can be ex…
Exceptional points, the spectral degeneracy points in the complex parameter space, are fundamental to non-Hermitian quantum systems. The dynamics of non-Hermitian systems in the presence of exceptional points differ significantly from those of Hermitian ones. Here we investigate non-adiabatic transitions in non-Hermitian $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric systems, in which the exceptional points are driven through at finite speed which are quadratic or cubic functions of time. We identity different transmission dynamics separated by exceptional points, and derive analytical approximate formula…
We review the generalization of tunneling time and anomalous behaviour of Faraday and Kerr rotation angles in parity and time ($\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$)-symmetric systems. Similarities of two phenomena are discussed, both exhibit a phase transition-like anomalous behaviour in certain range of model parameters. Anomalous behaviour of tunneling time and Faraday/Kerr angles in $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric systems is caused by the motion of poles of scattering amplitudes in energy/frequency complex plane.
We show that the quantum Jarzynski equality generalizes to $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum mechanics with unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. In the regime of broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry the Jarzynski equality does not hold as also the $\mathcal{CPT}$-norm is not preserved during the dynamics. These findings are illustrated for an experimentally relevant system -- two coupled optical waveguides. It turns out that for these systems the phase transition between the regimes of unbroken and broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry is thermodynamically inhibited as the irreversible work diverges at the cri…
$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry --- invariance with respect to combined space reflection $\mathcal{P}$ and time reversal $\mathcal{T}$ --- provides a weaker condition than (Dirac) Hermiticity for ensuring a real energy spectrum of a general non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians therefore form an intermediate class between Hermitian and non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. In this work, we derive the conditions for $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry in the context of electronic structure theory, and specifically, within the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation. We show that the HF orbitals are symmet…
An analytical approximation for the eigenvalues of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric Hamiltonian $\mathsf{H} = -d^{2}/dx^{2} - (\mathrm{i}x)^{ε+2}$, $ε> -1$ is developed via simple basis sets of harmonic-oscillator wave functions with variable frequencies and equilibrium positions. We demonstrate that our approximation provides high accuracy for any given energy level for all values of $ε> -1$.
The scalar field theory with potential $V(φ)=\textstyle{\frac{1}{2}} m^2φ^2-\textstyle{\frac{1}{4}} gφ^4$ ($g>0$) is ill defined as a Hermitian theory but in a non-Hermitian $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric framework it is well defined, and it has a positive real energy spectrum for the case of spacetime dimension $D=1$. While the methods used in the literature do not easily generalize to quantum field theory, in this paper the path-integral representation of a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric $-gφ^4$ theory is shown to provide a unified formulation for general $D$. A new conjectural relat…
We investigate the effects of quantum fluctuations in a parity-time($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric two-species Bose-Einstein Condensate(BEC). It is found that the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry, though preserved by the macroscopic condensate, can be spontaneously broken by its Bogoliubov quasi-particles under quantum fluctuations. The associated $\mathcal{PT}$-breaking transitions in the Bogoliubov spectrum can be conveniently tuned by the interaction anisotropy in spin channels and the strength of $\mathcal{PT}$ potential. In the $\mathcal{PT}$-unbroken regime, the real Bogoliubov modes are generally gap…
The most important properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate subject to balanced gain and loss can be modelled by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with an external $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric double-delta potential. We study its linear variant with a supersymmetric extension. It is shown that both in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric as well as in the $\mathcal{PT}$-broken phase arbitrary stationary states can be removed in a supersymmetric partner potential without changing the energy eigenvalues of the other state. The characteristic structure of the singular delta potential in the supersymmetry formalism…
We investigate the effects of competition between two complex, $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potentials on the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase of a "particle in a box". These potentials, given by $V_Z(x)=iZ\mathrm{sign}(x)$ and $V_ξ(x)=iξ[δ(x-a)-δ(x+a)]$, represent long-range and localized gain/loss regions respectively. We obtain the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase in the $(Z,ξ)$ plane, and find that for locations $\pm a$ near the edge of the box, the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase is strengthened by additional losses to the loss region. We also predict that a broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry will be …
Time-dependent $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum mechanics is featured by a varying inner-product metric and has stimulated a number of interesting studies beyond conventional quantum mechanics. In this paper, we explore geometric aspects of time-dependent $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum mechanics. We not only find a geometric phase factor emerging naturally from cyclic evolutions of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems, but also formulate a series of differential geometry concepts, including connection, curvature, parallel transport, metric tensor, and quantum geometric tensor. Our findings const…
Nonorthogonal quantum state discrimination (QSD) plays an important role in quantum information and quantum communication. In addition, compared to Hermitian quantum systems, parity-time-($\mathcal{PT}$-)symmetric non-Hermitian quantum systems exhibit novel phenomena and have attracted considerable attention. Here, we experimentally demonstrate QSD in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system (i.e., $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric QSD), by having quantum states evolve under a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian in a lossy linear optical setup. We observe that two initially nonorthogonal states can rapidly e…
We investigate the decoherence in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric qubit coupled with a bosonic bath. Using cannonical transformations, we map the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian representing the$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric qubit to a spin boson model. Identifying the parameter α that demarcates the hermiticity and non-hermiticity in the model, we show that the qubit does not decohere at the transition from real eigen spectrum to complex eigen spectrum. Using a general class of spectral densities, the strong suppression of decoherence is observed due to both vaccum and thermal fluctuations of the bath, and in…
$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum mechanics has been considered an important theoretical framework for understanding physical phenomena in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems, with a number of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry related applications. This line of research was made possible by the introduction of a time-independent metric operator to redefine the inner product of a Hilbert space. To treat the dynamics of generic non-Hermitian systems under equal footing, we advocate in this work the use of a time-dependent metric operator for the inner-product between time-evolving states. This treatment makes…
Based on a Liouville-space formulation of open systems, we present a solution to the quantum master equation of two coupled optical waveguides with varying loss. The periodic modulation of the Markovian loss of one of them yields a passive $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Floquet system that, at resonance, shows a strong reduction of the required loss for the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry to be broken. We showcase this transition for a multi-photon state, and we show how to physically implement the modulated loss with reservoir engineering of a set of bath modes.
The lasing and coherent perfect absorption (CPA) properties of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric microrings with mixed index and gain gratings, externally coupled to a bus waveguide, are theoretically investigated. For a complex grating at the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point, perfect unidirectional (either clockwise or counterclockwise) laser emission can be realized, however the grating does not discriminate longitudinal modes and CPA can not be simultaneously achieved. Above the grating $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point, single mode emission and simultaneous CPA can be obtained, with unba…
A non-Hermitian region connected to semi-infinite Hermitian lattices acts either as a source or as a sink and the probability current is not conserved in a scattering typically. Even a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric region that contains both a source and a sink does not lead to current conservation plainly. We propose a model and study the scattering across a non-Hermitian $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric two-level quantum dot~(QD) connected to two semi-infinite one-dimensional lattices in a special way so that the probability current is conserved. Aharonov-Bohm type phases are included …
Lattice models with non-hermitian, parity and time-reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric Hamiltonians, realized most readily in coupled optical systems, have been intensely studied in the past few years. A $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dimer lattice consists of dimers with intra-dimer coupling $ν$, inter-dimer coupling $ν'$, and balanced gain and loss potentials $\pm iγ$ within each dimer. This model undergoes two independent transitions, namely a $\mathcal{PT}$-breaking transition and a topological transition. We numerically and analytically investigate the signatures of these transitions in the tim…
Parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry plays an important role both in non-Hermitian and topological systems. In non-Hermitian systems $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can lead to an entirely real energy spectrum, while in topological systems $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry gives rise to stable and protected Dirac points. Here, we study a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system which is both non-Hermitian and topological, namely a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Dirac semimetal with non-Hermitian perturbations in three dimensions. We find that, in general, there are only two types of symmetry allowed non-Hermitian perturbatio…
We study the case of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbations of Hermitian Hamiltonians with degenerate eigenvalues using the example of a triple-well system. The degeneracy complicates the question, whether or not a stationary current through such a system can be established, i.e.\ whether or not the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric states are stable. It is shown that this is only the case for perturbations that do not couple to any of the degenerate states. The physical explanation for the inhibition of stable currents is discussed. However, introducing an on-site interaction restores the capability t…
Parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry is one of the most important accomplishments in optics over the past decade. Here the concept of $\mathcal{PT}$ mode-locking of a laser is introduced, in which active phase locking of cavity axial modes is realized by asymmetric mode coupling in a complex time crystal. $\mathcal{PT}$ mode-locking shows a transition from single to double pulse emission as the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point is crossed. The transition can show a turbulent behavior, depending on a dimensionless modulation parameter that plays the same role as the Reynolds number in hyd…
R. Labouvie et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 235302 (2016)] have described an experiment with a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice with localized loss created by a focused electron beam. We show that by setting suitable initial currents between neighboring sites it is possible to create $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quasi-stationary and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry broken decaying states in an embedded two-mode subsystem. This subsystem exhibits gain provided by the coupling to the reservoir sites and localized loss due to the electron beam, and shows t…
Thermodynamics and information theory have been intimately related since the times of Maxwell and Boltzmann. Recently it was shown that the dissipated work in an arbitrary non-equilibrium process is related to the Rényi divergences between two states along the forward and reversed dynamics. Here we show that the relation between dissipated work and Renyi divergences generalizes to $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum mechanics with unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. In the regime of broken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, the relation between dissipated work and Renyi divergences does not hold as the norm …
Rigorous use of SUSYQM approach applied for Klein-Gordon equation with scalar and vector potentials is discussed. The method is applied to solve exactly, for bound states, two models with position-dependent masses and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric vector potentials, depending on some parameters. The necessary conditions on the parameters to get physical solutions are described. Some special cases are also derived by adjusting the parameters of the models.
Eigenspectra of a spinless quantum particle trapped inside a rigid, rectangular, two-dimensional (2D) box subject to diverse inner potential distributions are investigated under hermitian, as well as non-hermitian antiunitary $\mathcal{PT}$ (composite parity and time-reversal) symmetric regimes. Four sectors or "stripes" inscribed in the rigid box comprising contiguously conjoined parallel rectangular segments with one side equaling the entire width of the box are studied. The stripes encompass piecewise constant potentials whose exact, complete energy eigenspectrum is obtained employing matri…
Searching for non-Hermitian (parity-time)$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians \cite{bender} with real spectra has been acquiring much interest for fourteen years. In this article, we have introduced a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian model which is given as $\hat{\mathcal{H}}=ω(\hat{b}^\dagger\hat{b}+\frac{1}{2})+ α(\hat{b}^{2}-(\hat{b}^\dagger)^{2})$ where $ω$ and $α$ are real constants, $\hat{b}$ and $\hat{b^\dagger}$ are first order differential operators. Moreover, Pseudo-Hermiticity that is a generalization of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry has been attracting a growing intere…
