We study the scattering properties of $N$ identical one-dimensional localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potentials, connected in series as well as in parallel. We derive a general transfer matrix formalism for parallel coupled quantum scatterers, and apply that theory to demonstrate that the spectral singularities and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric transitions of single scattering cells may be observed in coupled systems, at the same or distinct values of the critical parameters, depending on the connection modes under which the scattering objects are coupled. We analyse the influences of the connection configuration on the related transport properties such as spectral singularities and anisotropic transmission resonances.
$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking enhanced cavity optomechanical magnetometer is proposed, which is achieved by monitoring the change of intensity of a nonlinear four-wave mixing (FWM) process in a gain-cavity-assisted cavity optomechanical system (COMS). Compared with the traditional single loss COMS, the FWM intensity can be enhanced by two orders of magnitude when the gain-cavity-assisted COMS operates at the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking phase. Meanwhile, the sensitivity of magnetic field sensing can be increased from $10^{-9}$T to $10^{-11}$T. This originally comes from the fact that th…
We study the $\mathcal{PT} $-symmetry breaking for the scattering problem in a one-dimensional (1D) non-Hermitian tight-binding lattice model with balanced gain and loss distributed on two adjacent sites. In the scattering process the system undergoes a transition from the exact $\mathcal{PT} $-symmetry phase to the phase with spontaneously breaking $\mathcal{PT} $-symmetry as the amplitude of complex potentials increases. Using the S-matrix method, we derive an exact discriminant, which can be used to distinguish different symmetry phases, and analytically determine the exceptional point for …
We demonstrate a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking chaos in optomechanical system (OMS), which features an ultralow driving threshold. In principle, this chaos will emerge once a driving laser is applied to the cavity mode and lasts for a period of time. The driving strength is inversely proportional to the starting time of chaos. This originally comes from the dynamical enhancement of nonlinearity by field localization in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking phase ($\mathcal{PT}$BP). Moreover, this chaos is switchable by tuning the system parameters so that a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry phase transiti…
In multiparticle quantum interference, bosons show rather generally the tendency to bunch together, while fermions can not. This behavior, which is rooted in the different statistics of the particles, results in a higher coincidence rate $P$ for fermions than for bosons, i.e. $P^{(bos)}<P^{(ferm)}$. However, in lossy systems such a general rule can be violated because bosons can avoid lossy regions. Here it is shown that, in a rather general optical system showing passive parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, at the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking phase transition point the coincidence proba…
Non-Hermitian systems, with symmetric or antisymmetric Hamiltonians under the parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) operations, can have entirely real eigenvalues. This fact has led to surprising discoveries such as loss-induced lasing and topological energy transfer. A merit of anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ systems is free of gain, but in recent efforts on making anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ devices, nonlinearity is still required. Here, counterintuitively, we show how to achieve anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry and its spontaneous breaking in a linear device by spinning a lossy resonator. Compared with a Hermitian spinning…
Recently [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 106}, 093902 (2011)] it has been shown that $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric scattering systems with balanced gain and loss, undergo a transition from $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric scattering eigenstates, which are norm preserving, to symmetry broken pairs of eigenstates exhibiting net amplification and loss. In the present work we derive the existence of an invariant non-local current which can be directly associated with the observed transition playing the role of an "order parameter". The use of this current for the description of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking allo…
We investigate the parity- and time-reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetry breaking in lattice models in the presence of long-ranged, non-hermitian, $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potentials that remain finite or become divergent in the continuum limit. By scaling analysis of the fragile $\mathcal{PT}$ threshold for an open finite lattice, we show that continuum loss-gain potentials $V_α(x)\propto i |x|^α\mathrm{sign}(x)$ have a positive $\mathcal{PT}$-breaking threshold for $α>-2$, and a zero threshold for $α\leq -2$. When $α<0$ localized states with complex (conjugate) energies in the continuum energy…
Non-Hermitian systems with $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can possess purely real eigenvalue spectra. In this work two one-dimensional systems with two different topological phases, the topological nontrivial Phase (TNP) and the topological trivial phase (TTP) combined with $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric non-Hermitian potentials are investigated. The models of choice are the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and the Kitaev chain. The interplay of a spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking due to gain and loss with the topological phase is different for the two models. The SSH model undergoes a $\mathcal…
Aubry-Andre Harper (AAH) lattice models, characterized by reflection-asymmetric, sinusoidally varying nearest-neighbor tunneling profile, are well-known for their topological properties. We consider the fate of such models in the presence of balanced gain and loss potentials $\pm iγ$ located at reflection-symmetric sites. We predict that these models have a finite $\mathcal{PT}$ breaking threshold only for {\it specific locations} of the gain-loss potential, and uncover a hidden symmetry that is instrumental to the finite threshold strength. We also show that the topological edge-states remain…
Spontaneous symmetry breaking has revolutionized the understanding in numerous fields of modern physics. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking in a cavity quantum electrodynamics system in which an atomic ensemble interacts coherently with a single resonant cavity mode. The interacting system can be effectively described by two coupled oscillators with positive and negative mass when the two-level atoms are prepared in their excited states. The occurrence of symmetry breaking is controlled by the atomic detuning and the coupling to the cavity mode, …
A hallmark of topological band theory in periodic media is that bulk properties are not affected by boundary conditions. Remarkably, in certain non-Hermitian lattices the bulk properties are largely affected by boundaries, leading to such major effects as the non-Hermitian skin effect and violation of the bulk-boundary correspondence. Here we unveil that non-unitary discrete-time quantum walks of photons in systems involving gain and loss show rather generally non-Bloch parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry breaking phase transitions, and suggest a bulk probing method to detect such boundary-d…
We study the dynamics of correlations in a paradigmatic setup to observe $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric physics: a pair of coupled oscillators, one subject to a gain one to a loss. Starting from a coherent state, quantum correlations (QCs) are created, despite the system being driven only incoherently, and can survive indefinitely. $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking is accompanied by non-zero stationary QCs. We link $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking to the long-time behavior of both total and QCs, which display different scalings in the $\mathcal{PT}$-broken/unbroken phase and at the exceptional point …
Parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric systems are classical, gain-loss systems whose dynamics are governed by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with exceptional-point (EP) degeneracies. The eigenvalues of a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian change from real to complex conjugates at a critical value of gain-loss strength that is called the $\mathcal{PT}$ breaking threshold. Here, we obtain the $\mathcal{PT}$-threshold for a one-dimensional, finite Kitaev chain -- a prototype for a p-wave superconductor -- in the presence of a single pair of gain and loss potentials as a function of the superconduc…
A fundamental axiom of quantum mechanics requires the Hamiltonians to be Hermitian which guarantees real eigen-energies and probability conservation. However, a class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with Parity-Time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry can still display entirely real spectra. The Hermiticity requirement may be replaced by $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry to develop an alternative formulation of quantum mechanics. A series of experiments have been carried out with classical systems including optics, electronics, microwaves, mechanics and acoustics. However, there are few experiments to investigate $…

We simulate the dissipative dynamics of a mesoscopic system of long-range interacting particles which can be mapped into non-Hermitian spin models with a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. We find rich $\mathcal{PT}$-phase diagrams with $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and $\mathcal{PT}$-broken phases. The dynamical regimes can be further enriched by modulating tunable parameters of the system. We outline how the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetries of such systems may be probed by studying their dynamics. We note that systems of Rydberg atoms and systems of Rydberg ions with strong dipolar interactions are particularly w…
Open physical systems with balanced loss and gain, described by non-Hermitian parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) reflection symmetric Hamiltonians, exhibit a transition which could engenders modes that exponentially decay or grow with time and thus spontaneously breaks the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. Such $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking transitions have attracted many interests because of their extraordinary behaviors and functionalities absent in closed systems. Here we report on the observation of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking transitions by engineering time-periodic dissipation and coupling, whi…

A unit-preserving and completely positive linear map, or a channel, $Λ\colon \mathcal{A} \to \mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{in}}$ between $C^\ast$-algebras $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{in}}$ is called entanglement-breaking (EB) if $ω\circ( Λ\otimes \mathrm{id}_{\mathcal{B}} ) $ is a separable state for any $C^\ast$-algebra $\mathcal{B}$ and any state $ω$ on the injective $C^\ast$-tensor product $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{in}} \otimes \mathcal{B} .$ In this paper, we establish the equivalence of the following conditions for a channel $Λ$ with a quantum input space and with a general outcome $C^\ast…
Open, non-equilibrium systems with balanced gain and loss, known as parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric systems, exhibit properties that are absent in closed, isolated systems. A key property is the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking transition, which occurs when the gain-loss strength, a measure of the openness of the system, exceeds the intrinsic energy-scale of the system. We analyze the fate of this transition in disordered lattices with non-Hermitian gain and loss potentials $\pm iγ$ at reflection-symmetric sites. Contrary to the popular belief, we show that the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric …
The lasing and coherent perfect absorption (CPA) properties of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric microrings with mixed index and gain gratings, externally coupled to a bus waveguide, are theoretically investigated. For a complex grating at the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point, perfect unidirectional (either clockwise or counterclockwise) laser emission can be realized, however the grating does not discriminate longitudinal modes and CPA can not be simultaneously achieved. Above the grating $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point, single mode emission and simultaneous CPA can be obtained, with unba…
Time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$-) symmetry is fundamental to many physical processes. Typically, $\mathcal{T}$-breaking for microscopic processes requires the presence of magnetic field. However, for 2D massless Dirac billiards, $\mathcal{T}$-symmetry is broken automatically by the mass confinement, leading to chiral quantum scars. In this paper, we investigate the mechanism of $\mathcal{T}$-breaking by analyzing the local current of the scarring eigenstates and their magnetic response to an Aharonov--Bohm flux. Our results unveil the complete understanding of the subtle $\mathcal{T}$-breaking ph…
We consider optical media which feature antilinear symmetries. We show that: (i) spectral singularities of such media (if any) are always self-dual, i.e., correspond to CPA-lasers; (ii) under the change of a system's parameter the self-dual spectral singularity may split into a pair of isolated complex conjugate eigenvalues, which corresponds to an unconventional and overlooked in the most of previous studies scenario of the phase transition (known as $PT$-symmetry breaking in systems obeying parity-time symmetry); (iii) if the antilinear symmetry is local, i.e., does not involve any spatial r…
The attractive inverse square potential arises in a number of physical problems such as a dipole interacting with a charged wire, the Efimov effect, the Calgero-Sutherland model, near-horizon black hole physics and the optics of Maxwell fisheye lenses. Proper formulation of the inverse-square problem requires specification of a boundary condition (regulator) at the origin representing short-range physics not included in the inverse square potential and this generically breaks the Hamiltonian's continuous scale invariance in an elementary example of a quantum anomaly. The system's spectrum qual…
Using thermodynamic relations and dimensional analysis we derive a general formula for the thermodynamical trace $2\mathcal{E}-DP$ for non-relativistic systems and $\mathcal{E-DP}$ for relativistic systems, where $D$ is the number of spatial dimensions, in terms of the microscopic scales of the system within the grand canonical ensemble. We demonstrate the formula for several cases, including anomalous systems which develop scales through dimensional transmutation. Using this relation, we make explicit the connection between dimensional analysis and the virial theorem. This paper is focused ma…
