Features of the crystallization kinetics define directly the rate characteristics: the crystal nucleation rate, the crystal growth rate and the so-called kinetic rate factor known also as the attachment rate (of particles to the surface of a crystalline nucleus). We show that the kinetic rate factor as function of the reduced temperature follows a unified scaled power law. This scenario is confirmed by our simulation results for model atomistic systems (crystallizing volumetric liquids and liquid thin film) and by available experimental data for crystallizing polymers. We find that the exponent of this unified scaling law is associated with a measure of the glass-forming ability of a system. The results of the present study extend the idea of a unified description of the rate characteristics of the crystal nucleation and growth kinetics by means of the scaling relations.
In many technical applications, but also in natural processes like ice nucleation in clouds, crystallization proceeds in the presence of stresses and flows, hence the importance to understand the crystallization mechanism in simple situations. We employ molecular dynamics simulations to study the crystallization kinetics of a nearly hard sphere liquid that is weakly sheared. We demonstrate that shear flow both enhances and suppresses the crystallization kinetics of hard spheres. The effect of shear depends on the quiescent mechanism: suppression in the activated regime and enhancement in the d…
We propose a simple and versatile model to understand the deviations from the well-known Kolmogorov-Johnson-Mehl-Avrami kinetics theory found in metal recrystallization and amorphous semiconductor crystallization. We analyze the kinetics of the transformation and the grain size distribution of the product material, finding a good overall agreement between our model and available experimental data. The information so obtained could help to relate the mentioned experimental deviations due to preexisting anisotropy along some regions, to certain degree of crystallinity of the amorphous phases dur…
The kinetic mechanisms underlying bottom-up assembly of colloidal particles have been widely investigated in efforts to control crystallization pathways and to direct growth into targeted superstructures for applications including photonic crystals. Current work builds on recent progress in the development of kinetic theories for crystal growth of body-centered-cubic crystals in systems with short-range inter-particle interactions, accounting for a greater diversity of crystal structures and the role of the longer-ranged interactions and orientational degrees of freedom arising in polar system…
In this article, we introduce a framework to investigate the growth of nano-crystallites in a polymer matrix numerically. This framework combines the Flory theory of entropic elasticity with phase-field approaches commonly used to model crystal growth. We investigate in particular the growth kinetics of a crystallite in the presence of topological constraints such as entanglements or cross-links, and show that depending on the coupling between the topological constraints and the growth kinetics various structures can be observed: branched structures looking like spherulites or stable nano-crys…

The present study reports Al induced crystallization (AIC) of amorphous (a)-SiGe in Al-Ge-Si ternary system at low temperature ~ 350 degree C. In addition to crystallization, the isothermal annealing of a-SiGe/AlOx/Al/corning-glass (CG) structure was found to be accompanied by an Al induced layer exchange (ALILE) phenomenon. The evolution of residual stress in the Al layer during isothermal annealing is evaluated using X-ray diffraction based technique to ascertain the role of stress in the ALILE process. A corroboration of the stress with the growth kinetics, analyzed using Avrami theory of p…
When a system undergoes a transition from a liquid to a solid phase, it passes through multiple intermediate structures before reaching the final state. However, our knowledge on the exact pathways of this process is limited, mainly due to the difficulty of realizing direct observations. Here, we experimentally study the evolution of symmetry and density for various colloidal systems during liquid-to-solid phase transitions, and visualize kinetic pathways with single-particle resolution. We observe the formation of relatively-ordered precursor structures with different symmetries, which then c…
Transparent glasses of BaNaB9O15 (BNBO) were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. The amorphous and the glassy nature of the as-quenched samples were respectively, confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The glass transition and crystallization parameters were evaluated under non-isothermal conditions using DSC. The correlation between the heating rate dependent glass transition and the crystallization temperatures was discussed and deduced the Kauzmann temperature for BNBO glass-plates and powdered samples. The values of th…
The fundamental understanding of crystallization, in terms of microscopic kinetic and thermodynamic details, remains a key challenge in the physical sciences. Here, by using in situ graphene liquid cell transmission electron microscopy, we reveal the atomistic mechanism of NaCl crystallization from solutions confined within graphene cells. We find that rock salt NaCl forms with a peculiar hexagonal morphology. We also see the emergence of a transitory graphite-like phase, which may act as an intermediate in a two-step pathway. With the aid of density functional theory calculations, we propose …
Controlling a state of material between its crystalline and glassy phase has fostered many real-world applications. Nevertheless, design rules for crystallization and vitrification kinetics still lack predictive power. Here, we identify stoichiometry trends for these processes in phase change materials, i.e. along the GeTe-GeSe, GeTe-SnTe, and GeTe-Sb2Te3 pseudo-binary lines employing a pump-probe laser setup and calorimetry. We discover a clear stoichiometry dependence of crystallization speed along a line connecting regions characterized by two fundamental bonding types, metallic and covalen…
Crystallization within the discrete spheres of a block copolymer mesophase was studied by time-resolved x-ray scattering. The cubic packing of microdomains, established by self-assembly in the melt, is preserved throughout crystallization by strong interblock segregation even though the amorphous matrix block is well above its glass transition temperature. Homogeneous nucleation within each sphere yields isothermal crystallizations which follow first-order kinetics, contrasting with the sigmoidal kinetics normally exhibited in the quiescent crystallization of bulk polymers.
Below the melting temperature $T_m$ crystals are the stable phase of typical elemental or molecular systems. However, cooling down a liquid below $T_m$, crystallization is anything but inevitable. The liquid can be supercooled, eventually forming a glass below the glass transition temperature $T_g$. Despite their long lifetimes and the presence of strong barriers that produces an apparent stability, supercooled liquids and glasses remain intrinsically metastable state and thermodynamically unstable towards the crystal. Here we investigated the isothermal crystallization kinetics of the prototy…
Crystallization kinetics has features that are universal and independent of the type of crystallized system. The possibility of using scaling relations to describe the temperature dependences of the surface self-diffusion coefficient $D_s$, which is one of the key characteristics of crystallization kinetics, has been demonstrated in application to various crystallized molecular glasses. It has been shown that the surface self-diffusion coefficient $D_s$ as a function of the dimensionless temperature is reproduced by a power law and is universally scaled for all considered systems. The analysis…
Engineering phase change materials (PCM) to realize superior data storage devices requires a detailed understanding of crystallization kinetics and its temperature dependence. The temperature dependence of crystallization differs distinctly between crystallizing from the glassy phase and the undercooled liquid (UCL). Hence, knowing the phase from which crystallization occurs is necessary for predicting the switching ability. Here, we measure the glassy dynamics and crystallization kinetics using calorimetry for heating rates spanning over six orders of magnitude. Our results show that the prom…
The kinetics and microstructure of solid-phase crystallization under continuous heating conditions and random distribution of nuclei are analyzed. An Arrhenius temperature dependence is assumed for both nucleation and growth rates. Under these circumstances, the system has a scaling law such that the behavior of the scaled system is independent of the heating rate. Hence, the kinetics and microstructure obtained at different heating rates differ only in time and length scaling factors.Concerning the kinetics, it is shown that the extended volume evolves with time according to alpha_ex=[exp(kap…
Kinetics of crystallization of two amorphous alloys, Fe70Cr10B20 and Fe80Zr10B10, have been followed up by neutron thermodiffractometry experiments performed in the two axis diffractometer D20 (ILL, Grenoble). The structural changes are directly correlated with the temperature dependence of the magnetization. Fe70Cr10B20 crystallizes following a two-step process: an eutectic crystallization of alfa-Fe (bcc) and the metastable tetragonal phase (Fe0.8Cr0.2)3B followed by another eutectic transformation to the stable phase (Fe0.75Cr0.25)2B and more segregation of alfa-Fe. These tetragonal phases …
The crystallization of a binary system is investigated in computer model which takes into account a temperature dependence of diffusion coefficient and a nonequilibrium partition of dissolved component of the alloy. The dependence of interface velocity on an undercooling at the dendrite tip is obtained during rapid solidification of Fe-B and Ni-B systems. The morphological transition which is conditioned by change from a diffusion growth regime to thermal growth at some critical undercooling is detected. This transition is characterized by discontinuous magnification of the dendrite growth vel…

DNA-coated colloids can self-assemble into an incredible diversity of crystal structures, but applications of this technology are limited by poor understanding and control over the dynamical crystallization pathways. To address this challenge, we use microfluidics to quantify the self-assembly dynamics of DNA-programmed colloidal crystals, from thermally-activated nucleation through reaction-limited and diffusion-limited phases of crystal growth. Our detailed measurements of the temperature and concentration dependence of the kinetics at all stages along the crystallization pathway provide a s…
Kinetics of crystal-growth is investigated along the solid-liquid coexistence line for the (100), (110) and (111) orientations of the Lennard-Jones and Weeks-Chandler-Andersen fcc crystal-liquid interface, using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. A slowing down of the growth kinetics along the coexistence line is observed, which is mostly a temperature effect, with other quantities such as the melting pressure and liquid self-diffusion coefficient having a negligible impact. The growth kinetics of the two potentials become similar at large values of the melting temperature and pre…
The physics of flat band is novel and rich but difficult to access. In this regard, recently twisting of bilayer van der Waals (vdW)-bounded two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted much attention, because the reduction of Brillouin zone will eventually lead to a diminishing kinetic energy. Alternatively, one may start with a 2D Kagome lattice, which already possesses flat bands at the Fermi level, but unfortunately these bands connect quadratically to other (dispersive) bands, leading to undesirable effects. Here, we propose, by first-principles calculation and tight-binding modeling, tha…
Crystal nucleation and growth processes induced by an externally applied shear strain in a model metallic glass are studied by means of nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, in a range of temperatures. We observe that the nucleation-growth process takes place after a transient, induction regime. The critical cluster size and the lag-time associated with this induction period are determined from a mean first-passage time analysis. The laws that describe the cluster growth process are studied as a function of temperature and strain rate. A theoretical model for crystallization kinetics …
The work introduces a 3D cellular automaton model for the spatial and crystallographic prediction of spherulite growth phenomena in polymers at the mesoscopic scale. The automaton is discrete in time, real space, and orientation space. The kinetics is formulated according to the Hoffman-Lauritzen secondary surface nucleation and growth theory for spherulite expansion. It is used to calculate the switching probability of each grid point as a function of its previous state and the state of the neighboring grid points. The actual switching decision is made by evaluating the local switching probab…
We study the homogeneous nucleation process in Stillinger-Weber silicon in the NVT ensemble. A clear first-order transition from the liquid to crystal phase is observed thermodynamically with kinetic and structural evidence of the transformation. At 0.75 T_m, the critical cluster size is about 175 atoms. The lifetime distribution of clusters as a function of the maximum size their reach follows an inverse gaussian distribution as was predicted recently from the classical theory of nucleation (CNT). However, while there is a qualitative agreement with the CNT, the free energy curve obtained fro…
Classical nucleation theory offers a good framework for understanding the common features of new phase formation processes in metastable homogeneous media at rest. However, nucleation processes in liquids are ubiquitously affected by hydrodynamic flow, and there is no satisfactory understanding of whether shear promotes or slows down the nucleation process. We developed a classical nucleation theory for sheared systems starting from the molecular level of the Becker-Doering master kinetic equation and we analytically derived a closed-form expression for the nucleation rate. The theory accounts…
Germanium is an extremely important material used for numerous functional applications in many fields of nanotechnology. In this paper, we study the crystallization of amorphous Ge using atomistic simulations of critical nano-metric nuclei at high temperatures. We find that crystallization occurs by the recurrent transfer of atoms via a diffusive process from the amorphous phase into suitably-oriented crystalline layers. We accompany our simulations with a comprehensive thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of the growth process, which explains the energy balance and the interfacial growth veloci…
Al-induced layer exchange crystallization of amorphous Ge thin films has been demonstrated recently, and provides a suitable system to characterize, model and control Ge crystal growth on non-crystalline substrates. Direct observation of Ge transfer to the surface of Al through an interposed GeOx interfacial layer allows independent measurement of the density and average area of crystalline Ge islands formed on the surface. Based on these experimental observations, the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kologoromov phase transformation theory is extended to model nanoscale nucleation and growth of Ge islands…
Viscoelastic phase separation of colloidal suspensions can be interrupted to form gels either by glass transition or by crystallization. With a new confocal microscopy protocol, we follow the entire kinetics of phase separation, from homogeneous phase to different arrested states. For the first time in experiments, our results unveil a novel crystallization pathway to sponge-like porous crystal structures. In the early stages, we show that nucleation requires a structural reorganization of the liquid phase, called stress-driven ageing. Once nucleation starts, we observe that crystallization fo…

A simple numerical model which calculates the kinetics of crystallization involving randomly distributed nucleation and isotropic growth is presented. The model can be applied to different thermal histories and no restrictions are imposed on the time and the temperature dependencies of the nucleation and growth rates. We also develop an algorithm which evaluates the corresponding emerging grain size distribution. The algorithm is easy to implement and particularly flexible making it possible to simulate several experimental conditions. Its simplicity and minimal computer requirements allow hig…
The process of crystallization is often understood in terms of the fundamental microstructural elements of the crystallite being formed, such as surface orientation or the presence of defects. Considerably less is known about the role of the liquid structure on the kinetics of crystal growth. Here atomistic simulations and machine learning methods are employed together to demonstrate that the liquid adjacent to solid-liquid interfaces presents significant structural ordering, which effectively reduces the mobility of atoms and slows down the crystallization kinetics. Through detailed studies o…
We determined bulk crystal nucleation rates in aqueous suspensions of charged spheres at low metastability. Experiments were performed in dependence on electrolyte concen-tration and for two different particle number densities. The time-dependent nucleation rate shows a pronounced initial peak, while post-solidification crystal size distributions are skewed towards larger crystallite sizes. At each concentration, the nucleation rate density initially drops exponentially with increasing salt concentration. The complete data set, however, shows an unexpected scaling of the nucleation rate densit…
Crystallization is a fundamental process in materials science, providing the primary route for the realization of a wide range of new materials. Crystallization rates are also considered to be useful probes of glass-forming ability. At the microscopic level, crystallization is described by the classical crystal nucleation and growth theories, yet in general solid formation is a far more complex process. In particular, the observation of apparently different crystal growth regimes in many binary liquid mixtures greatly challenges our understanding of crystallization. Here, we study by experimen…
Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to measure the kinetic coefficient at the solid-liquid interface in pure gold. Results are obtained for the (111), (100) and (110) orientations. Both Au(100) and Au(110) are in reasonable agreement with the law proposed for collision-limited growth. For Au(111), stacking fault domains form, as first reported by Burke, Broughton and Gilmer [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 89}, 1030 (1988)]. The consequence on the kinetics of this interface is dramatic: the measured kinetic coefficient is three times smaller than that predicted by collision-limited growth. Finall…

We study the influence of the liquid-vapor surface on the crystallization kinetics of supercooled metal alloys. While a good glass former, $\rm{Cu}_{50}\rm{Zr}_{50}$, shows no evidence of surface enhancement of crystallization, $\rm{Ni}_{50}\rm{Al}_{50}$ exhibits an increased rate of crystallization due to heterogeneous nucleation at the free liquid surface. The difference in the compositional fluctuations at the interface is proposed as the explanation of the distinction between the two alloys. Specifically, we observe compositional ordering at the surface of $\rm{Ni}_{50}\rm{Al}_{50}$ while …
Industrial and agricultural waste streams, which contain high concentrations of NH4+, PO43- and transition metals are environmentally harmful and toxic pollutants. At the same time phosphorous and transition metals constitute highly valuable resources. Typically, separate pathways have been considered to extract hazardous transition metals or phosphate, independently from each other. Investigations on the simultaneous removal of multiple components have been studied only to a limited extent. Here, we report the synthesis routes for Co- and Ni-struvites (NH4MPO4.6H2O, M = Ni2+, Co2+ ), which al…
The structural relaxation of amorphous materials is described as arising from the superposition of elementary processes with varying activation energies. We show that it is possible to obtain the kinetic parameters of these processes from differential scanning calorimetry experiments. The transformation rate is predicted for the transient decay when an isotherm is reached and for the relaxation threshold detected in partially relaxed samples. Good agreement is obtained with experiment if the individual components transform through first-order kinetics, but inconsistencies arise for second-orde…
We have studied the growth dynamics and electronic properties of SrTiO3-d homoepitaxial films by pulsed laser deposition. We find the two dominant factors determining the growth mode are the kinetics of surface crystallization and oxidation. When matched, persistent two-dimensional layer-by-layer growth can be obtained for hundreds of unit cells. By tuning these kinetic factors, oxygen vacancies can be frozen in the film, allowing controlled, systematic doping across a metal-insulator transition. Metallic films can be grown, exhibiting Hall mobilities as high as 25,000 cm2/Vs.
Germanium is the base element in many phase-change materials, i.e. systems that can undergo reversible transformations between their crystalline and amorphous phases. They are widely used in current digital electronics and hold great promise for the next generation of non-volatile memory devices. However, the ultra fast phase transformations required for these applications can be exceedingly complex even for single component systems, and a full physical understanding of these phenomena is still lacking. In this paper we study nucleation and growth of crystalline Ge from amorphous thin films at…
The article presents an experimental study of an issue of whether the formation of arrays of Ge quantum dots on the Si(001) surface is an equilibrium process or it is kinetically controlled. We deposited Ge on Si(001) at the room temperature and explored crystallization of the disordered Ge film as a result of annealing at 600 °C. The experiment has demonstrated that the Ge/Si(001) film formed in the conditions of an isolated system consists of the standard patched wetting layer and large droplike clusters of Ge rather than of huts or domes which appear when a film is grown in a flux of Ge ato…
