The discovery of Weyl semimetals (WSMs) has fueled tremendous interest in condensed matter physics. WSMs require breaking of either inversion symmetry (IS) or time-reversal symmetry (TRS); they can be categorized into type-I and type-II WSMs, characterized by un-tilted and strongly tilted Weyl cones respectively. Type-I WSMs with breaking of IS or TRS and type-II WSMs with IS breaking have been realized experimentally, but TRS-breaking type-II WSM still remains elusive. In this article, we report an ideal TRS-breaking type-II WSM with only one pair of Weyl nodes observed in the antiferromagnetic topological insulator Mn(Bi1-xSbx)2Te4 under magnetic fields. This state is manifested by a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect, a non-trivial $\mathrm{π}$ Berry phase of the cyclotron orbit and a large positive magnetoresistance in the ferromagnetic phase at an optimal sample composition. Our results establish a promising platform for exploring the physics underlying the long-sought, ideal TRS breaking type-II WSM.
We show that type-II Weyl point formation in MnBi2-xSbxTe4 is more likely than in MnBi2Te4 when x reaches 0.5, as the alloy case does not suffer from the same degree of lattice parameter sensitivity as in MnBi2Te4. To further substantiate the stability of type-II Weyl points in MnBi2-xSbxTe4, we demonstrate that among the three conditions of establishing a type-II Weyl point, two are robustly satisfied by the zone-folded dispersion of Bi and Te pz orbitals and spin-orbit coupling already available in MnBi2Te4, and that the control over MnBi2-xSbxTe4 alloy composition provides a rational means …
The chiral anomaly is the predicted break down of chiral symmetry in a Weyl semimetal with monopoles of opposite chirality when an electric field parallel to a magnetic field is applied. It occurs because of charge pumping from a positive chirality to a negative chirality monopole. Experimental observation of this fundamental effect has been plagued by concerns about the pathways of the current. Here, we unambiguously demonstrate the thermal analog of the chiral anomaly in topological insulator bismuth-antimony alloys driven into an ideal Weyl semimetal state by a Zeeman field, with the chemic…

The thermal chiral anomaly is a new mechanism for thermal transport that occurs in Weyl semimetals (WSM). It is attributed to the generation and annihilation of energy at Weyl points of opposite chirality. The effect was observed in the Bi1-xSbx alloy system, at x=11% and 15%, which are topological insulators at zero field and driven into an ideal WSM phase by an external field. Given that the experimental uncertainty on x is of the order of 1%, any systematic study of the effect over a wider range of x requires precise knowledge of the transition composition xc at which the electronic bands a…
The antiferromagnetic order and structural distortion in the LaFe(As1-xSbx)O system have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction and physical properties measurements. Polycrystalline samples of LaFe(As1-xSbx)O (x<0.5) were prepared using solid state synthesis at ambient and high pressure. We find that the isoelectronic substitution of Sb for As decreases the structural and magnetic transition temperatures but, contrary to the effects of phosphorus substitution, superconductivity is not induced. Instead a slight increase in the Fe magnetic moment is observed.
The anomalous Hall effect in the noncollinear antiferromagnetic metals Mn(3)Ge and Mn(3)Sn has been observed after a theoretical prediction made by us (EPL, 108, 67001 (2014)). The experimental values of the anomalous Hall conductivities (AHC) are large as are the theoretical values. Recently measured thermoelectric properties mirror the large AHC and clearly show that the transport is by quasiparticles at the Fermi energy. We here make an attempt to unravel the origin of the large AHC and propose that both Mn(3)Sn and Mn(3)Ge host Weyl points, which were recently discovered in semimetals. For…
We theoretically study the interplay between bulk Weyl electrons and magnetic topological defects, including magnetic domains, domain walls, and $\mathbb{Z}_6$ vortex lines, in the antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals \mnsn\ and Mn$_3$Ge with negative vector chirality. We argue that these materials possess a hierarchy of energies scales which allows a description of the spin structure and spin dynamics using a XY model with $\mathbb{Z}_6$ anisotropy. We propose a dynamical equation of motion for the XY order parameter, which implies the presence of $\mathbb{Z}_6$ vortex lines, the double-domain p…
A magnetic Weyl semimetal is a recent focus of extensive research as it may exhibit large and robust transport phenomena associated with topologically protected Weyl points in momentum space. Since a magnetic texture provides a handle for the configuration of the Weyl points and its transport response, understanding of magnetic dynamics should form a basis of future control of a topological magnet. Mn3Sn is an example of an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal that exhibits a large response comparable to the one observed in ferromagnets despite a vanishingly small magnetization. The non-collinear …
Recent experiments revealed that Mn3Sn and Mn3Ge exhibit a strong anomalous Hall effect at room temperature, provoking us to explore their electronic structures for topological properties. By ab initio band structure calculations, we have observed the existence of multiple Weyl points in the bulk and corresponding Fermi arcs on the surface, predicting antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals in Mn3Ge and Mn3Sn. Here the chiral antiferromagnetism in the Kagome-type lattice structure is essential to determine the positions and numbers of Weyl points. Our work further reveals a new guiding principle to …
Topology and strong electron correlations are crucial ingredients in emerging quantum materials, yet their intersection in experimental systems has been relatively limited to date. Strongly correlated Weyl semimetals, particularly when magnetism is incorporated, offer a unique and fertile platform to explore emergent phenomena in novel topological matter and topological spintronics. The antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Mn3Sn exhibits many exotic physical properties such as a large spontaneous Hall effect and has recently attracted intense interest. In this work, we report synthesis of epitaxia…
The interplay between magnetism, band topology, and electronic correlation in low dimensions has been a fascinating subject of research. Here, we propose two-dimensional (2D) material systems which demonstrate such an interesting interplay. Based on first-principles calculations and structural search algorithms, we identify three lowest energy 2D CoSe structures, termed as the $α$-, $β$-, and $γ$-CoSe. {We show that $α$- and $β$-CoSe are two rare examples of 2D antiferromagnetic metals, which are related to their Fermi surfaces nesting features, and meanwhile, $γ$-CoSe is a ferromagnetic metal…
It has recently been demonstrated that various topological states, including Dirac, Weyl, nodal-line, and triple-point semimetal phases, can emerge in antiferromagnetic (AFM) half-Heusler compounds. However, how to determine the AFM structure and to distinguish different topological phases from transport behaviors remains unknown. We show that, due to the presence of combined time-reversal and fractional translation symmetry, the recently proposed second-order nonlinear Hall effect can be used to characterize different topological phases with various AFM configurations. Guided by the symmetry …
Recently, the topological nature of an antiferromagnet YbMnBi2 has been controversial. YbMnBi2 is regarded as a candidate of Type-II Weyl semimetals with magnetic moments of Mn atoms canting about 10° in some studies but as a Dirac semimetal without canting in others. By means of systematical density functional theory calculations, we show the perfect YbMnBi2 bulk has a collinear antiferromagnetic ordering and, naturally, it is a Dirac semimetal. Considering the vital role of magnetic moment canting in generating the Type-II Weyl state, we artificially cant the magnetic moments of Mn atoms and…
Electrical manipulation of emergent phenomena due to nontrivial band topology is a key to realize next-generation technology using topological protection. A Weyl semimetal is a three-dimensional gapless system that hosts Weyl fermions as low-energy quasiparticles. It exhibits various exotic phenomena such as large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and chiral anomaly, which have robust properties due to the topologically protected Weyl nodes. To manipulate such phenomena, the magnetic version of Weyl semimetals would be useful as a magnetic texture may provide a handle for controlling the locations o…
The non-collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure makes Mn3Sn exhibit exotic properties. At present, it has been found that both the hydrostatic pressure and the strain introduced by interstitial N atoms have a great influence on this magnetic structure. Here, the effect of the residual strain (RS) on it is investigated. AC and DC magnetic measurement results suggest that Mn3Sn without RS has the non-collinear AFM structure only in the temperature range of 285 K to 400 K; while Mn3Sn with RS has a non-coplanar AFM structure in the entire temperature range from 5 K to 400 K. Both anomalous Ha…

Non-collinear antiferromagnetic materials have received dramatically increasing attention in the field of spintronics as their exotic topological features such as the Berry-curvature-induced anomalous Hall effect and possible magnetic Weyl states could be utilized in future topological antiferromagnetic spintronic devices. In this work, we report the successful integration of the antiferromagnetic metal Mn3Sn thin films onto ferroelectric oxide PMN-PT. By optimizing growth, we realized the large anomalous Hall effect with small switching magnetic fields of several tens mT fully comparable to t…
We theoretically study the carrier doping effect for magnetism in a stacked-kagome system $\rm{{Co}_3{Sn}_2{S}_2}$ based on an effective model and the Hartree-Fock method. We show the electron filling and temperature dependences of the magnetic order parameter. The perpendicular ferromagnetic ordering is suppressed by hole doping, wheres undoped $\rm{{Co}_3{Sn}_2{S}_2}$ shows magnetic Weyl semimetal state. Additionally, in the electron-doped regime, we find a non-collinear antiferromagnetic ordering. Especially, in the non-collinear antiferromagnetic state, by considering a certain spin-orbit …
Recent classification efforts encompassing crystalline symmetries have revealed rich possibilities for solid-state systems to support a tapestry of exotic topological states. However, finding materials that realize such states remains a daunting challenge. Here we show how the interplay of topology, symmetry, and magnetism combined with doping and external electric and magnetic field controls can be used to drive the previously unreported SrIn$_2$As$_2$ materials family into a variety of topological phases. Our first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis reveal that SrIn$_2$As$_2$ is a…
The recent discovery of antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator (TI) MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has triggered great research efforts on exploring novel magnetic topological physics. Based on first-principles calculations, we find that the manipulation of magnetic orientation and order not only significantly affects material symmetries and orbital hybridizations, but also results in variant new magnetic topological phases in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. We thus predict a series of unusual topological quantum phase transitions that are magnetically controllable in the material, including phase transitions from AFM…
Combining magnetism with band topology provides various novel phases that are otherwise impossible. Among several cases, noncollinear metallic antiferromagnets can reveal particularly rich topological physics due to their diverse magnetic ground states. However, there are only a few experimental studies due to the lack of suitable materials, especially with triangular lattice antiferromagnets. Here, we report that metallic triangular antiferromagnet Co1/3TaS2 exhibits a substantial anomalous Hall effect (AHE) related to its noncollinear magnetic order. Our first-principles calculations found t…
Topological insulators, in contrast to ordinary semiconductors, accompany protected metallic surfaces described by Dirac-type fermions. Here, we theoretically show another emergent two-dimensional metal embedded in the bulk insulator is realized at a magnetic domain wall. The domain wall has long been studied as ingredients of both old-fashioned and leading-edge spintronics. The domain wall here, as an interface of seemingly trivial antiferromagnetic insulators, emergently realizes a functional interface preserved by zero modes with robust two-dimensional Fermi surfaces, where pyrochlore iridi…
Detection of Dirac, Majorana and Weyl fermions in real materials may significantly strengthen the bridge between high-energy and condensed-matter physics. While the presence of Dirac fermions is well established in graphene and topological insulators, Majorana particles have been reported recently and evidence for Weyl fermions in non-centrosymmetric crystals has been found only a couple of months ago, the 'magnetic' Weyl fermions are still elusive despite numerous theoretical predictions and intense experimental search. In order to detect a time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl state we design…
The manipulation of antiferromagnetic order by means of spin-orbit torques opens unprecedented opportunities to exploit the dynamics of antiferromagnets in spintronic devices. In this work, we investigate the current-induced switching of the magnetic octupole vector in the Weyl antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn as a function of pulse shape, field, temperature, and time. We find that the switching behavior can be either bistable or tristable depending on the temporal structure of the current pulses. Time-resolved Hall effect measurements reveal that Mn$_3$Sn switching proceeds via a two-step demagnetiza…
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE), a Hall signal occurring without an external magnetic field, is one of the most significant phenomena. However, understanding the AHE mechanism has been challenging and largely restricted to ferromagnetic metals. Here, we investigate the recently discovered AHE in the chiral antiferromagnet Mn3Sn by measuring a thermal analog of the AHE, known as an anomalous thermal Hall effect (ATHE). The amplitude of the ATHE scales with the anomalous Hall conductivity of Mn3Sn over a wide temperature range, demonstrating that the AHE of Mn3Sn arises from a dissipationless in…
Dirac semimetal is a phase of matter, whose elementary excitation is described by the relativistic Dirac equation. In the limit of zero mass, its parity-time symmetry enforces the Dirac fermion in the momentum space, which is composed of two Weyl fermions with opposite chirality, to be non-chiral. Inspired by the flavor symmetry in particle physics, we theoretically propose a massless Dirac-like equation yet linking two Weyl fields with the identical chirality by assuming SU(2) isospin symmetry, independent of the space-time rotation exchanging the two fields. Dramatically, such symmetry is hi…
Antiferromagnetic spin motion at terahertz (THz) frequencies attracts growing interests for fast spintronics, however their smaller responses to external field inhibit device application. Recently the noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn, a Weyl semimetal candidate, was reported to show large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at room temperature comparable to ferromagnets. Dynamical aspect of such large responses is an important issue to be clarified for future THz data processing. Here the THz anomalous Hall conductivity in Mn$_3$Sn thin films is investigated by polarization-resolved spectroscopy.…
Topological materials ranging from topological insulators to Weyl and Dirac semimetals form one of the most exciting current fields in condensed-matter research. Many half-Heusler compounds, RPtBi (R= rare earth) have been theoretically predicted to be topological semimetals. Among various topological attributes envisaged in RPtBi, topological surface states, chiral anomaly and planar Hall effect have been observed experimentally. Here, we report on an unusual intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the antiferromagnetic Heusler Weyl semimetal compounds GdPtBi and NdPtBi that is observed over…
Three dimensional materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and magnetic interactions represent an opportunity to realize a variety of rare and potentially useful topological phases. In this work, we use first principles calculations to show that the recently synthesized material Bi2MnSe4 displays a combination of band inversion and magnetic interactions, leading to several topological phases. Bi2PbSe4, also studied, also displays band inversion and is a topological insulator. In bulk form, the ferromagnetic phase of Bi2MnSe4 is either a nodal line or Weyl semimetal, depending on the direction…
The subject of topological materials has attracted immense attention in condensed-matter physics, because they host new quantum states of matter containing Dirac, Majorana, or Weyl fermions. Although Majorana fermions can only exist on the surface of topological superconductors, Dirac and Weyl fermions can be realized in both 2D and 3D materials. The latter are semimetals with Dirac/Weyl cones either not tilted (type I) or tilted (type II). Although both Dirac and Weyl fermions have massless nature with the nontrivial Berry phase, the formation of Weyl fermions in 3D semimetals require either …
Symmetry principles play a critical role in formulating the fundamental laws of nature, with a large number of symmetry-protected topological states identified in recent studies of quantum materials. As compelling examples, massless Dirac fermions are jointly protected by the space inversion symmetry $P$ and time reversal symmetry $T$ supplemented by additional crystalline symmetry, while evolving into Weyl fermions when either $P$ or $T$ is broken. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we reveal that massless Dirac fermions are present in a layered FeSn crystal containing antiferromag…
Magnetic Weyl semimetals are expected to have extraordinary physical properties such as a chiral anomaly and large anomalous Hall effects that may be useful for future, potential, spintronics applications. However, in most known host materials, multiple pairs of Weyl points prevent a clear manifestation of the intrinsic topological effects. Our recent density functional theory (DFT) calculations study suggest that EuCd$_{2}$As$_{2}$ can host Dirac fermions in an antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered state or a single pair of Weyl fermions in a ferromagnetically (FM) ordered state. Unfortunately,…
Topological magnetic Weyl semimetals have been proposed to host controllable chiral domain walls which bear a great prospect in device applications. To exploit them in applications, it is important to have a proper way to tune and manipulate these domain walls. One possible means is through magnetoelastic coupling. The involvement of rare earth in the lately proposed $R$Al$X$ ($R$=rare earth, $X$=Si and Ge) family magnetic Weyl semimetals may provide such a platform. Here we present transport and thermodynamic properties of CeAlGe under hydrostatic pressure. We find that pressure enhances the …
We investigate a new class of topological antiferromagnetic (AF) Chern insulators driven by electronic interactions in two-dimensional systems without inversion symmetry. Despite the absence of a net magnetization, AF Chern insulators (AFCI) possess a nonzero Chern number $C$ and exhibit the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). Their existence is guaranteed by the bifurcation of the boundary line of Weyl points between a quantum spin Hall insulator and a topologically trivial phase with the emergence of AF long-range order. As a concrete example, we study the phase structure of the honeycomb …
Pure spin currents carry information in quantum spintronics and could play an essential role in the next generation low-energy-consumption electronics. Here we theoretically predict that the magnetic field can induce a quantum spin current without a concomitant charge current in metals without time reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ and inversion symmetry $\mathcal{P}$ but respect the combined $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. It is governed by the magnetic moment of the Bloch states on the Fermi surface, and can be regarded as a spinful generalization of the gyrotropic magnetic effect in $\mathcal{P}$-br…
The discovery of time-reversal-invariant topological states has drawn great attention in recent decades. However, despite the potential of displaying a variety of exotic physics, the study of magnetic topological phases lags behind due to underlying added complexity of magnetism. In this work, we predict the interplay of magnetism and topology in the non-centrosymmetric ternary manganese compound MnIn$_2$Te$_4$, using first-principles calculations. At ambient pressure, the ground state of the system is an antiferromagnetic insulator. With the application of small hydrostatic pressure ($\sim$0.…

We explore two methods for single crystal growth of the theoretically proposed magnetic Weyl semimetals $R$AlGe ($R$ = Pr,Ce), which prove that a floating zone technique, being both crucible- and flux-free, is crucial to obtain perfectly stoichiometric $R$AlGe crystals. In contrast, the crystals grown by a flux growth technique tend to be Al-rich. We further present both structural and elemental analysis, along with bulk magnetization and electrical resistivity data on the crystals prepared by the floating zone technique. Both systems with the intended 1:1:1 stoichiometry crystallize in the an…
Although strong electronic correlations are known to be responsible for some highly unusual behaviors of solids such as, metal--insulator transitions, magnetism and even high--temperature superconductivity, their interplay with recently discovered topological states of matter awaits full exploration. Here we use a modern electronic structure method combining density functional theory of band electrons with dynamical self-energies of strongly correlated states to predict that two well-known phases of actinide compound UNiSn, a paramagnetic semiconducting and antiferromagnetic metallic, correspo…
The band topology of magnetic semimetals is of interest both from the fundamental science point of view and with respect to potential spintronics and memory applications. Unfortunately, only a handful of suitable topological semimetals with magnetic order have been discovered so far. One such family that hosts these characteristics is the antiperovskites, A$_3$BO, a family of 3D Dirac semimetals. The A=Eu$^{2+}$ compounds magnetically order with multiple phases as a function of applied magnetic field. Here, by combining band structure calculations with neutron diffraction and magnetic measurem…
