This paper develops a propagation model of electromagnetic signals emitted at frequencies of 20 and 40 MHz for the Ecuadorian jungle. It is expected that the results obtained at the end of this research will be applied to produce a complete coverage map for wireless communications technologies, which will optimize the radio spectrum in operations carried out by the Armed Forces in the Ecuadorian border jungle. The final expression found is an adjustment function that relates the Receiving Power (PRX) to factors that determine the geometry of the Fresnell Zone (Connectivity). The resulting model of the research improves the discrepancy between the simulated power (PRX) in commercial software and a sample of measured wireless transmissions in situ. The analysis was based on the results and methodology presented by Longley-Rice. It was determined the non-normality of the discrepancy between the losses (LLR) calculated by Longley-Rice Model (LMR) and the data obtained in the field, It was added correction coefficients on the expression of LMR. Subsequently, the mathematical expression was linearized to implement multivariate linear adjustment techniques. Alternative formulations to the Linear Regression model were sought and their goodness of fit was compared; all these techniques are introduced theoretically. To conclude, an analysis of the error of the found model is made. Mathematical modeling software such as MATLAB and SPSS were used for the formulation and numerical analysis, whose algorithms are also introduced. Finally, we propose future lines of research that allow a global understanding of the behavior of telecommunications technologies under hostile environments.
A key functionality of emerging connected autonomous systems such as smart cities, smart transportation systems, and the industrial Internet-of-Things, is the ability to process and learn from data collected at different physical locations. This is increasingly attracting attention under the terms of distributed learning and federated learning. However, in connected autonomous systems, data transfer takes place over communication networks with often limited resources. This paper examines algorithms for communication-efficient learning for linear regression tasks by exploiting the informativene…
We address the problem of how to achieve optimal inference in distributed quantile regression without stringent scaling conditions. This is challenging due to the non-smooth nature of the quantile regression (QR) loss function, which invalidates the use of existing methodology. The difficulties are resolved through a double-smoothing approach that is applied to the local (at each data source) and global objective functions. Despite the reliance on a delicate combination of local and global smoothing parameters, the quantile regression model is fully parametric, thereby facilitating interpretat…
In this work, we propose a zero-adjusted log-symmetric quantile regression model. Initially, we introduce zero-adjusted log-symmetric distributions, which allow for the accommodation of zeros. The estimation of the parameters is approached by the maximum likelihood method and a Monte Carlo simulation is performed to evaluate the estimates. Finally, we illustrate the proposed methodology with the use of a real extramarital affairs data set.

This paper studies the problem of nonparametric estimation of a smooth function with data distributed across multiple machines. We assume an independent sample from a white noise model is collected at each machine, and an estimator of the underlying true function needs to be constructed at a central machine. We place limits on the number of bits that each machine can use to transmit information to the central machine. Our results give both asymptotic lower bounds and matching upper bounds on the statistical risk under various settings. We identify three regimes, depending on the relationship a…

Electronic health records (EHRs) offer great promises for advancing precision medicine and, at the same time, present significant analytical challenges. Particularly, it is often the case that patient-level data in EHRs cannot be shared across institutions (data sources) due to government regulations and/or institutional policies. As a result, there are growing interests about distributed learning over multiple EHRs databases without sharing patient-level data. To tackle such challenges, we propose a novel communication efficient method that aggregates the local optimal estimates, by turning t…
In the era of big data, it is necessary to split extremely large data sets across multiple computing nodes and construct estimators using the distributed data. When designing distributed estimators, it is desirable to minimize the amount of communication across the network because transmission between computers is slow in comparison to computations in a single computer. Our work provides a general framework for understanding the behavior of distributed estimation under communication constraints for nonparametric problems. We provide results for a broad class of models, moving beyond the Gaussi…
The length-biased Birnbaum-Saunders distribution is both useful and practical for environmental sciences. In this paper, we initially derive some new properties for the length-biased Birnbaum-Saunders distribution, showing that one of its parameters is the mode and that it is bimodal. We then introduce a new regression model based on this distribution. We implement use the maximum likelihood method for parameter estimation, approach interval estimation and consider three types of residuals. An elaborate Monte Carlo study is carried out for evaluating the performance of the likelihood-based est…
We present a practical approach for computing the sandwich variance estimator in two-stage regression model settings. As a motivating example for two-stage regression, we consider regression calibration, a popular approach for addressing covariate measurement error. The sandwich variance approach has been rarely applied in regression calibration, despite that it requires less computation time than popular resampling approaches for variance estimation, specifically the bootstrap. This is likely due to requiring specialized statistical coding. In practice, a simple bootstrap approach with Wald c…
A new statistical model designed for regression analysis with a sparse design matrix is proposed. This new model utilizes the positions of the limited non-zero elements in the design matrix to decompose the regression model into sub-regression models. Statistical inferences are further made on the values of these limited non-zero elements to provide a reference for synthesizing these sub-regression models. With this concept of the regression decomposition and synthesis, the information on the structure of the design matrix can be incorporated into the regression analysis to provide a more reli…
The modeling of personal accident insurance data has been a topic of extreme relevance in the insurance literature. This kind of data often exhibits positive skewness and heavy tails. In this work, we propose a new quantile regression model based on the scale-mixture Birnbaum-Saunders distribution for modeling personal accident insurance data. The maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters are obtained via the EM algorithm. Two Monte Carlo simulation studies are performed using the R software. The first study aims to analyze the performances of the EM algorithm to obtain the maximum …
A general theory for Gaussian mean estimation that automatically adapts to unknown sparsity under arbitrary norms is proposed. The theory is applied to produce adaptively minimax rate-optimal estimators in high dimensional regression and matrix estimation that involve no tuning parameters.
Consider a nonparametric regression model with one-sided errors and regression function in a general Hölder class. We estimate the regression function via minimization of the local integral of a polynomial approximation. We show uniform rates of convergence for the simple regression estimator as well as for a smooth version. These rates carry over to mean regression models with a symmetric and bounded error distribution. In such a setting, one obtains faster rates for irregular error distributions concentrating sufficient mass near the endpoints than for the usual regular distributions. The re…
Quantile regression is a powerful statistical methodology that complements the classical linear regression by examining how covariates influence the location, scale, and shape of the entire response distribution and offering a global view of the statistical landscape. In this paper we propose a new quantile regression model for longitudinal data. The proposed approach incorporates the correlation structure between repeated measures to enhance the efficiency of the inference. In order to use the Newton-Raphson iteration method to obtain convergent estimates, the estimating functions are redefin…
We establish the asymptotic normality of the regression estimator in a fixed-design setting when the errors are given by a field of dependent random variables. The result applies to martingale-difference or strongly mixing random fields. On this basis, a statistical test that can be applied to image analysis is also presented.
In a variety of different settings cumulative sum (CUSUM) procedures have been applied for the sequential detection of structural breaks in the parameters of stochastic models. Yet their performance depends strongly on the time of change and is best under early-change scenarios. For later changes their finite sample behavior is rather questionable. We therefore propose modified CUSUM procedures for the detection of abrupt changes in the regression parameter of multiple time series regression models, that show a higher stability with respect to the time of change than ordinary CUSUM procedures.…
We give methods for the construction of designs for linear models, when the purpose of the investigation is the estimation of the conditional quantile function and the estimation method is quantile regression. The designs are robust against misspecified response functions, and against unanticipated heteroscedasticity. The methods are illustrated by example, and in a case study in which they are applied to growth charts.
We develop a maximum-likelihood based method for regression in a setting where the dependent variable is a random graph and covariates are available on a graph-level. The model generalizes the well-known $β$-model for random graphs by replacing the constant model parameters with regression functions. Cramér-Rao bounds are derived for the undirected $β$-model, the directed $β$-model, and the generalized $β$-model. The corresponding maximum likelihood estimators are compared to the bounds by means of simulations. Moreover, examples are given on how to use the presented maximum likelihood estimat…
This paper deals with the problem of finding the globally optimal subset of h elements from a larger set of n elements in d space dimensions so as to minimize a quadratic criterion, with an special emphasis on applications to computing the Least Trimmed Squares Estimator (LTSE) for robust regression. The computation of the LTSE is a challenging subset selection problem involving a nonlinear program with continuous and binary variables, linked in a highly nonlinear fashion. The selection of a globally optimal subset using the branch and bound (BB) algorithm is limited to problems in very low di…
The classic censored regression model (tobit model) has been widely used in the economic literature. This model assumes normality for the error distribution and is not recommended for cases where positive skewness is present. Moreover, in regression analysis, it is well-known that a quantile regression approach allows us to study the influences of the explanatory variables on the dependent variable considering different quantiles. Therefore, we propose in this paper a quantile tobit regression model based on quantile-based log-symmetric distributions. The proposed methodology allows us to mode…
We consider a simple approach for approximating detailed information about the conditional distribution of a real-valued response variable, given values for its covariates, using only the outputs from a standard regression model. We validate this approach by assessing its performance in the context of quantile regression; when applied to the outputs of linear, gradient boosted tree ensemble and random forest models. We find that it compares favourably to the standard approach for estimating quantile regression functions, especially for commonly selected tail probabilities, and is highly compet…
We introduce a new model of linear regression for random functional inputs taking into account the first order derivative of the data. We propose an estimation method which comes down to solving a special linear inverse problem. Our procedure tackles the problem through a double and synchronized penalization. An asymptotic expansion of the mean square prevision error is given. The model and the method are applied to a benchmark dataset of spectrometric curves and compared with other functional models.
A nonparametric procedure for robust regression estimation and for quantile regression is proposed which is completely data-driven and adapts locally to the regularity of the regression function. This is achieved by considering in each point M-estimators over different local neighbourhoods and by a local model selection procedure based on sequential testing. Non-asymptotic risk bounds are obtained, which yield rate-optimality for large sample asymptotics under weak conditions. Simulations for different univariate median regression models show good finite sample properties, also in comparison t…
This paper discusses the asymptotic behavior of regression models under general conditions. First, we give a general inequality for the difference of the sum of square errors (SSE) of the estimated regression model and the SSE of the theoretical best regression function in our model. A set of generalized derivative functions is a key tool in deriving such inequality. Under suitable Donsker condition for this set, we give the asymptotic distribution for the difference of SSE. We show how to get this Donsker property for parametric models even if the parameters characterizing the best regression…

Machine and statistical learning algorithms can be reliably automated and applied at scale. Therefore, they can constitute a considerable asset for designing practical forecasting systems, such as those related to urban water demand. Quantile regression algorithms are statistical and machine learning algorithms that can provide probabilistic forecasts in a straightforward way, and have not been applied so far for urban water demand forecasting. In this work, we aim to fill this gap by automating and extensively comparing several quantile-regression-based practical systems for probabilistic one…

This paper studies distributed estimation and support recovery for high-dimensional linear regression model with heavy-tailed noise. To deal with heavy-tailed noise whose variance can be infinite, we adopt the quantile regression loss function instead of the commonly used squared loss. However, the non-smooth quantile loss poses new challenges to high-dimensional distributed estimation in both computation and theoretical development. To address the challenge, we transform the response variable and establish a new connection between quantile regression and ordinary linear regression. Then, we p…

There are relatively few works dealing with conformal prediction for multi-task learning issues, and this is particularly true for multi-target regression. This paper focuses on the problem of providing valid (i.e., frequency calibrated) multi-variate predictions. To do so, we propose to use copula functions applied to deep neural networks for inductive conformal prediction. We show that the proposed method ensures efficiency and validity for multi-target regression problems on various data sets.

Random forests are powerful non-parametric regression method but are severely limited in their usage in the presence of randomly censored observations, and naively applied can exhibit poor predictive performance due to the incurred biases. Based on a local adaptive representation of random forests, we develop its regression adjustment for randomly censored regression quantile models. Regression adjustment is based on new estimating equations that adapt to censoring and lead to quantile score whenever the data do not exhibit censoring. The proposed procedure named censored quantile regression f…
We address the issue of lack-of-fit testing for a parametric quantile regression. We propose a simple test that involves one-dimensional kernel smoothing, so that the rate at which it detects local alternatives is independent of the number of covariates. The test has asymptotically gaussian critical values, and wild bootstrap can be applied to obtain more accurate ones in small samples. Our procedure appears to be competitive with existing ones in simulations. We illustrate the usefulness of our test on birthweight data.
Quantile regression permits describing how quantiles of a scalar response variable depend on a set of predictors. Because a unique definition of multivariate quantiles is lacking, extending quantile regression to multivariate responses is somewhat complicated. In this paper, we describe a simple approach based on a two-step procedure: in the first step, quantile regression is applied to each response separately; in the second step, the joint distribution of the signs of the residuals is modeled through multinomial regression. The described approach does not require a multidimensional definitio…
This paper considers a general class of nonparametric time series regression models where the regression function can be time-dependent. We establish an asymptotic theory for estimates of the time-varying regression functions. For this general class of models, an important issue in practice is to address the necessity of modeling the regression function as nonlinear and time-varying. To tackle this, we propose an information criterion and prove its selection consistency property. The results are applied to the U.S. Treasury interest rate data.
We obtain new mathematical properties of the exponentiated odd log-logistic family of distributions, and of its special case named the exponentiated odd log-logistic Weibull, and its log transformed. A new location and scale regression model is constructed, and some simulations are carried out to verify the behavior of the maximum likelihood estimators, and of the modified deviance-based residuals. The methodology is applied to the Japanese-Brazilian emigration data.
Ordinary least squares (OLS) linear regression is one of the most basic statistical techniques for data analysis. In the main stream literature and the statistical education, the study of linear regression is typically restricted to the case where the covariates are fixed, errors are mean zero Gaussians with variance independent of the (fixed) covariates. Even though OLS has been studied under misspecification from as early as the 1960's, the implications have not yet caught up with the main stream literature and applied sciences. The present article is an attempt at a unified viewpoint that m…

We consider inference procedures, conditional on an observed ancillary statistic, for regression coefficients under a linear regression setup where the unknown error distribution is specified nonparametrically. We establish conditional asymptotic normality of the regression coefficient estimators under regularity conditions, and formally justify the approach of plugging in kernel-type density estimators in conditional inference procedures. Simulation results show that the approach yields accurate conditional coverage probabilities when used for constructing confidence intervals. The plug-in ap…
We present a greedy method for simultaneously performing local bandwidth selection and variable selection in nonparametric regression. The method starts with a local linear estimator with large bandwidths, and incrementally decreases the bandwidth of variables for which the gradient of the estimator with respect to bandwidth is large. The method--called rodeo (regularization of derivative expectation operator)--conducts a sequence of hypothesis tests to threshold derivatives, and is easy to implement. Under certain assumptions on the regression function and sampling density, it is shown that t…
In this paper we propose a bimodal gamma distribution using a quadratic transformation based on the alpha-skew-normal model. We discuss several properties of this distribution such as mean, variance, moments, hazard rate and entropy measures. Further, we propose a new regression model with censored data based on the bimodal gamma distribution. This regression model can be very useful to the analysis of real data and could give more realistic fits than other special regression models. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to check the bias in the maximum likelihood estimation. The proposed mod…
In environmental epidemiology studies, health response data (e.g. hospitalization or mortality) are often noisy because of hospital organization and other social factors. The noise in the data can hide the true signal related to the exposure. The signal can be unveiled by performing a temporal aggregation on health data and then using it as the response in regression analysis. From aggregated series, a general methodology is introduced to account for the particularities of an aggregated response in a regression setting. This methodology can be used with usually applied regression models in wea…
Sex difference in allele frequency is an emerging topic that is critical to our understanding of ascertainment bias, as well as data quality particularly of the largely overlooked X chromosome. To detect sex difference in allele frequency for both X chromosomal and autosomal variants, existing methods are conservative when applied to samples from multiple ancestral populations, such as African and European populations. Additionally, it remains unexplored whether the sex difference in allele frequency differs between populations, which is important to trans-ancestral genetic studies. We thus de…

In this paper, we propose deep learning architectures (FNN, CNN and LSTM) to forecast a regression model for time dependent data. These algorithm's are designed to handle Floating Car Data (FCD) historic speeds to predict road traffic data. For this we aggregate the speeds into the network inputs in an innovative way. We compare the RMSE thus obtained with the results of a simpler physical model, and show that the latter achieves better RMSE accuracy. We also propose a new indicator, which evaluates the algorithms improvement when compared to a benchmark prediction. We conclude by questioning …
In regional economics research, a problem of interest is to detect similarities between regions, and estimate their shared coefficients in economics models. In this article, we propose a mixture of finite mixtures (MFM) clustered regression model with auxiliary covariates that account for similarities in demographic or economic characteristics over a spatial domain. Our Bayesian construction provides both inference for number of clusters and clustering configurations, and estimation for parameters for each cluster. Empirical performance of the proposed model is illustrated through simulation e…
