Following the procedure described in Pol et al., we update the Galactic double neutron star (DNS) merger rate by including the new, highly eccentric DNS system J0509+3801 (Lynch et al.). This leads to a new Galactic DNS merger rate of $\mathcal{R}_{\rm MW} = 37^{+24}_{-11}$ Myr$^{-1}$, where the errors represent 90% confidence intervals. The corresponding DNS merger detection rate for Advanced LIGO is $\mathcal{R} = 1.9^{+1.2}_{-0.6} \times \left( D_{\rm r} / 100 \ \rm Mpc \right)^3 \rm yr^{-1},$ where $D_{\rm r}$ is the range distance. Using the LIGO O3 range distance of 130 Mpc (Abbott et al.), we predict that LIGO will detect anywhere between three and seven DNS mergers per year of observing at O3 sensitivity.
The Crab pulsar and plerion are some of the brightest and best studied non-thermal astrophysical sources. The recent discovery of pulsed gamma-ray emission above 100 gigaelectronvolts (GeV) from the Crab pulsar with VERITAS (the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) challenges commonly accepted pulsar emission models and puts the gamma-ray emission region far out in the magnetosphere - close to or even beyond the light cylinder. We present updated VERITAS results from the analysis of a data set that is twice as large as the original data set published in 2011. The results ar…
Observations of short-duration gamma-ray bursts and their afterglows show that a good fraction (perhaps $\gtrsim50\%$) of binary neutron star mergers lead to strongly magnetized, rapidly rotating pulsars (including millisecond magnetars), no matter whether the pulsar remnants are short- or long-lived. Such compact objects are very likely to have significant radial oscillations and high interior temperatures, as indicated in recent numerical simulations. In this paper, we have investigated rotation-induced gravitational radiation from possibly existing, radially oscillating pulsars after binary…
We investigate pre-merger coherent radio emission from neutron star mergers arising due to the magnetospheric interaction between compact objects. We consider two plausible radiation mechanisms, and show that if one neutron star has a surface magnetic field $B_{\rm s} \ge 10^{12}$G, coherent millisecond radio bursts with characteristic temporal morphology and inclination angle dependence are observable to Gpc distances with next-generation radio facilities. We explore multi-messenger and multi-wavelength methods of identification of a NS merger origin of radio bursts, such as in fast radio bur…
Radio pulsar glitches probe far-from-equilibrium processes involving stress accumulation and relaxation in neutron star interiors. Previous studies of glitch rates have focused on individual pulsars with as many recorded glitches as possible. In this work we analyze glitch rates using all available data including objects that have glitched never or once. We assume the glitch rate follows a homogeneous Poisson process, and therefore exclude pulsars which exhibit quasiperiodic glitching behavior. Calculating relevant Bayes factors shows that a model in which the glitch rate $λ$ scales as a power…
We present our works in updating the spin and orbital parameters for the newly discovered accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP) IGR J17591$-$2342 through pulsar timing and analyzing its energy dependent pulse behaviors. The data being analyzed were collected by Neutron Star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER) that observed this AMXP from August to October 2018. Using the pulse arrival time delay technique, more accurate spin and orbital parameters were evaluated. From the measured spin frequency derivative, it is estimated that the magnetic field of the neutron star in IGR J17591$-$2342 …
Short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) are widely believed to result from the mergers of compact binaries. This model predicts an afterglow that bears the characteristic signatures of a constant, low density medium, including a smooth prompt-afterglow transition, and a simple temporal evolution. However, these expectations are in conflict with observations for a non-negligible fraction of sGRB afterglows. In particular, the onset of the afterglow phase for some of these events appears to be delayed and, in addition, a few of them exhibit late- time rapid fading in their lightcurves. We show that these…

We report on the discovery of four millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the High Time Resolution Universe (HTRU) pulsar survey being conducted at the Parkes 64-m radio telescope. All four MSPs are in binary systems and are likely to have white dwarf companions. In addition, we present updated timing solutions for 12 previously published HTRU MSPs, revealing new observational parameters such as five proper motion measurements and significant temporal dispersion measure variations in PSR J1017-7156. We discuss the case of PSR J1801-3210, which shows no significant period derivative after four years of …
The recent detection of gravitational waves associated with a binary neutron star merger revives interest in interacting pulsar magnetospheres. Current models predict that a significant amount of magnetic energy should be released prior to the merger, leading to electromagnetic precursor emission. In this paper, we revisit this problem in the light of the recent progress in kinetic modeling of pulsar magnetospheres. We limit our work to the case of aligned magnetic moments and rotation axes, and thus neglect the orbital motion. We perform global two-dimensional axisymmetric particle-in-cell si…
We revisit the merger rate for Galactic double neutron star (DNS) systems in light of recent observational insight into the longitudinal and latitudinal beam shape of the relativistic DNS PSR J1906$+$0746. Due to its young age and its relativistic orbit, the pulsar contributes significantly to the estimate of the joint Galactic merger rate. We follow previous analyses by modelling the underlying pulsar population of nine merging DNS systems and study the impact and resulting uncertainties when replacing simplifying assumptions made in the past with actual knowledge of the beam shape, its exten…
The detection of two NS--BH mergers by LIGO-Virgo provided the first direct confirmation of the existence of this type of system in the Universe. These detections also imply the existence of pulsar--black hole (PSR--BH) systems. In this analysis, we use the non-detection of any PSR--BH systems in current radio surveys to estimate a 95\% upper limit of $\sim$150 PSR--BH binary systems that are beaming towards the Earth in the Milky Way. This corresponds to a 95\% upper limit of $\mathcal{R}_{\rm LIGO} = 7.6$~yr$^{-1}$ on the merger detection rate for the LIGO-Virgo network scaled to a range dis…
Recent calculations of the hydromagnetic deformation of a stratified, non-barotropic neutron star are generalized to describe objects with superconducting interiors, whose magnetic permeability μis much smaller than the vacuum value μ_0. It is found that the star remains oblate if the poloidal magnetic field energy is \gtrsim 40% of total magnetic field energy, that the toroidal field is confined to a torus which shrinks as μdecreases, and that the deformation is much larger (by a factor \sim μ_0/μ) than in a non-superconducting object. The results are applied to the latest direct and indirect…
I present a set of long-term, direct, relativistic many-body computations of model dense stellar clusters with up-to-date stellar-evolutionary, supernova (SN), and remnant natal-kick models, including pair instability and pulsation pair instability supernova (PSN and PPSN), using an updated version of NBODY7 N-body simulation program. The N-body model also includes stellar evolution-based natal spins of BHs and treatments of binary black hole (BBH) mergers based on numerical relativity. These, for the first time in a direct N-body simulation, allow for second-generation BBH mergers. The set of…
We present a timing and spectral analysis of the X-ray pulsar XTE J1946+274 observed with Suzaku during an outburst decline in 2010 October and compare with previous results. XTE J1946+274 is a transient X-ray binary consisting of a Be-type star and a neutron star with a 15.75 s pulse period in a 172 d orbit with 2-3 outbursts per orbit during phases of activity. We improve the orbital solution using data from multiple instruments. The X-ray spectrum can be described by an absorbed Fermi-Dirac cutoff power law model along with a narrow Fe K line at 6.4 keV and a weak Cyclotron Resonance Scatte…
A subset of short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) have been found to be characterized by near-infrared/optical bumps at $\sim 1$ days, some of which exhibit almost concurrent X-ray flares. Although the near-infrared/optical bumps may be a signature of kilonovae, the X-ray flares are not consistent with kilonovae. It is widely believed that sGRBs are produced by the mergers of double compact objects, during which sub-relativistic ejecta are launched. In this paper we propose that the above optical/X-ray features are indicative of the formation of long-lived magnetars following the mergers of double ne…
The Double Pulsar (PSR J0737-3039) is the only neutron star-neutron star (NS-NS) binary in which both NSs have been detectable as radio pulsars. The Double Pulsar has been assumed to dominate the Galactic NS-NS binary merger rate R_g among all known systems, solely based on the properties of the first-born, recycled pulsar (PSR J0737-3039A, or A) with an assumption for the beaming correction factor of 6. In this work, we carefully correct observational biases for the second-born, non-recycled pulsar (PSR J0737-0737B, or B) and estimate the contribution from the Double Pulsar on R_g using const…
In this dissertation, we estimate the population of different classes of BNS systems that are visible to gravitational-wave observatories. Given that no ultra-compact BNS systems have been discovered in pulsar radio surveys, we place a 95\% confidence upper limit of $\sim$850 and $\sim$1100 ultra-compact neutron star--white dwarf and double neutron star (DNS) systems that are beaming towards the Earth, respectively. We show that among all of the current radio pulsar surveys, the ones at the Arecibo radio telescope have the best chance of detecting an ultra-compact BNS system. We also show that…

It has been recently proposed that massive fast-rotating highly-magnetized white dwarfs could describe the observational properties of some of Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters (SGRs) and Anomalous X-Ray Pulsars (AXPs). Moreover, it has also been shown that high-field magnetic (HFMWDs) can be the outcome of white dwarf binary mergers. The products of these mergers consist of a hot central white dwarf surrounded by a rapidly rotating disk. Here we show that the merger of a double degenerate system can explain the characteristics of the peculiar AXP 4U 0142+61. This scenario accounts for the observed inf…
Binary pulsars are affected by general relativity (GR), causing the spin axes of each pulsar to precess. We present polarimetric radio observations of PSR J1906+0746 that demonstrate the validity of the geometrical model of pulsar polarisation. We reconstruct the (sky-projected) polarisation emission map over the pulsar's magnetic pole and predict the disappearance of the detectable emission by 2028. Two additional tests of GR are performed in this system, including the spin-precession for strongly self-gravitating bodies. We constrain the relativistic treatment of the pulsar polarisation mode…

We estimate the merger timescale of spectroscopically-selected, subparsec supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) candidates by comparing their expected contribution to the gravitational wave background (GWB) with the sensitivity of current pulsar timing array (PTA) experiments and in particular, with the latest upper limit placed by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav). We find that the average timescale to coalescence of such SMBHBs is $\langle t_{\rm evol} \rangle > 6\times 10^4\,$yr, assuming that their orbital evolution in the PTA frequency band is dr…
We show that the merger and tidal disruption of a C/O white dwarf (WD) by a neutron star (NS) binary companion provides a natural formation scenario for the PSR B1257+12 planetary system. Starting with initial conditions for the debris disk produced of the disrupted WD, we model its long term viscous evolution, including for the first time the effects of mass and angular momentum loss during the early radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) phase and accounting for the unusual C/O composition on the disk opacity. For plausible values of the disk viscosity $α\sim 10^{-3}-10^{-2}$ and the …

The recently observed chirping signature in the light curves of Seyfert 1 galaxy SDSSJ1430$+$2303 could be explained by a late-inspiralling supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) system in the galactic center, which will merge in the near future (or could have merged already). For the merging SMBBH scenario, SDSSJ1430$+$2303 can be a source of nonlinear gravitational wave (GW) burst with memory (BWM), which may provide a promising target for future pulsar timing array (PTA) observations. In this work, we investigate the prospects for detecting the BWM signal from SDSSJ1430$+$2303 by the Intern…
We present the Galactic merger rate for double neutron star (DNS) binaries using the observed sample of eight DNS systems merging within a Hubble time. This sample includes the recently discovered, highly relativistic DNS systems J1757$-$1854 and J1946+2052, and is approximately three times the sample size used in previous estimates of the Galactic merger rate by Kim et al. Using this sample, we calculate the vertical scale height for DNS systems in the Galaxy to be $z_0 = 0.4 \pm 0.1$ kpc. We calculate a Galactic DNS merger rate of $\mathcal{R}_{\rm MW} = 42^{+30}_{-14}$ Myr$^{-1}$ at the 90%…
The merger of a neutron star (NS) binary may result in the formation of a long-lived, or indefinitely stable, millisecond magnetar remnant surrounded by a low-mass ejecta shell. A portion of the magnetar's prodigious rotational energy is deposited behind the ejecta in a pulsar wind nebula, powering luminous optical/X-ray emission for hours to days following the merger. Ions in the pulsar wind may also be accelerated to ultra-high energies, providing a coincident source of high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos. At early times, the cosmic rays experience strong synchrotron losses; however, after…
Large-area sky surveys show that massive galaxies undergo at least one major merger in a Hubble time. Ongoing pulsar timing array (PTA) experiments are aimed at measuring the gravitational wave (GW) emission from binary supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the centres of galaxy merger remnants. In this paper, using the latest observational estimates for a range of galaxy properties and scaling relations, we predict the amplitude of the GW background generated by the binary SMBH population. We also predict the numbers of individual binary SMBH GW sources. We predict the characteristic strain amp…

We present new timing and spectral analyses of PSR J1412+7922 (Calvera) and PSR J1849-0001, which are only seen as pulsars in X-rays, based on observations conducted with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). We obtain updated and substantially improved pulse ephemerides compared to previous X-ray studies, as well as spectra that can be well-fit by simple blackbodies and/or a power law. Our refined timing measurements enable deeper searches for pulsations at other wavelengths and sensitive targeted searches by LIGO/Virgo for continuous gravitational waves from these neutron s…
Highly energetic astrophysical phenomena like supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) mergers are predicted to emit prodigious amounts of gravitational waves (GWs). An anticipated component of the gravitational waveform known as "memory" is permanent and non-oscillatory. For SMBHB mergers, the memory is created primarily during the most violent moments of the inspiral immediately preceding the final plunge and ring-down when the strongest gravitational fields are at work and the non-linearities of general relativity are most pronounced. The essentially time-domain nature of memory makes it forb…
Pulsar timing arrays are sensitive to gravitational waves from supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries at orbital separations of << 1pc. There is currently an observational paucity of such systems, although they are central figures in studies of galaxy evolution, merger dynamics, and active nucleus formation. We review the prospects of detecting SMBH binaries through electromagnetic radiative processes thought to be associated with galaxy mergers and late-stage binary evolution. We then discuss the scientific goals of joint pulsar timing and electromagnetic studies of these systems, including …
The first detected gravitational wave GW170817 from a binary neutron star merger is associated with an important optical transient AT 2017gfo, which is a direct observation of kilonova. Recent observations suggest that the remnant compact object of the binary neutron star merger associated with GW170817/GRB 170817A may be a stable long-lived magnetized neutron star. In this situation, there would be a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) embedded inside the dynamic ejecta. The PWN emission may be absorbed by the ejecta or leak out of the system. We study the effect of the PWN emission on the observed ligh…
Decade-long timing observations of arrays of millisecond pulsars have placed highly constraining upper limits on the amplitude of the nanohertz gravitational-wave stochastic signal from the mergers of supermassive black-hole binaries ($\sim 10^{-15}$ strain at $f = 1/\mathrm{yr}$). These limits suggest that binary merger rates have been overestimated, or that environmental influences from nuclear gas or stars accelerate orbital decay, reducing the gravitational-wave signal at the lowest, most sensitive frequencies. This prompts the question whether nanohertz gravitational waves are likely to b…
The post-merger gravitational wave (GW) radiation of the remnant formed in the binary neutron star (BNS) coalescence has not been directly measured, yet. We show in this work that the properties of the BNS involved in GW170817, additionally constrained by PSR J0030+0451, the lower limit on the maximum gravitational mass of non-rotating neutron star (NS) and some nuclear data, are in favor of strong post-merger GW radiation. This conclusion applies to the mergers of Galactic BNS systems as well. Significant post-merger GW radiation is also preferred to improve the consistency between the maximu…
Recently, DeLaunay et al. (2016) discovered a gamma-ray transient, Swift J0644.5-5111, associated with the fast radio burst (FRB) 131104. They also reported follow-up broadband observations beginning two days after the FRB and provided upper limits on a putative afterglow of this transient. In this paper, we show that if such a transient drives a relativistic shock as in a cosmological gamma-ray burst (GRB), these upper limits are consistent with an environment of which density is much less than that of an interstellar medium but typical for the outskirts' density of a galaxy when the typical …
We consider electromagnetic interaction and precursor emission of merging neutron stars. Orbital motion of the magnetized neutron stars may revive pair production within the common magnetosphere years before the merger, igniting pulsar-like magnetospheric dynamics. We identify two basic scenarios: (i) only one star is magnetized (1M-DNS scenario) and (ii) both stars are magnetized (2M-DNS scenario). Inductively created electric fields can have component along the total magnetic field (gaps) and/or the electric field may exceed the value of the local magnetic field. The key to the detection is …
Flux density measurements provide fundamental observational parameters that describe a pulsar. In the current pulsar catalogue, 27% of radio pulsars have no flux density measurement in the 20 cm observing band. Here, we present the first measurements of the flux densities in this band for 32 pulsars observed using the Parkes radio telescope and provide updated pulse profiles for these pulsars. We have used both archival and new observations to make these measurements. Various schemes exist for measuring flux densities. We show how the flux densities measured vary between these methods and how …
In this Letter we propose that coherent radio emission of Crab, other young energetic pulsars, and millisecond pulsars is produced in the magnetospheric current sheet beyond the light cylinder. We carry out global and local two-dimensional kinetic plasma simulations of reconnection to illustrate the coherent emission mechanism. Reconnection in the current sheet beyond the light cylinder proceeds in the very efficient plasmoid-dominated regime, and current layer gets fragmented into a dynamic chain of plasmoids which undergo successive coalescence. Mergers of sufficiently large plasmoids produc…
The X-ray afterglow of short hard bursts (SHBs) of gamma rays provides compelling evidence that SHBs are produced by highly relativistic jets launched in the birth of rotationally powered millisecond pulsars in merger of neutron stars and/or in mass accretion on neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries. Gravitational wave detection of relatively nearby neutron star mergers by Ligo-Virgo, followed by far off-axis short GRBs or orphan afterglows of beamed away SHBs with an MSP-like light curve will verify beyond doubt the neutron star merger origin of SHBs.
The fraction of long duration gamma ray bursts (GRBs) without an associated bright supernovae (SNe) at small redshifts $(z<0.15)$ is comparable to that of GRBs associated with SNe. We show, that their X-ray afterglow and the X-ray afterglow of most of the nearby $(z<1)$ GRBs without a confirmed association with SNe, are well reproduced by the launch of highly relativistic jets in the SN-less birth of millisecond pulsars in neutron star mergers or through phase transition of neutron stars to quark stars following mass accretion in compact binaries. Such a large fraction of GRBs with pulsar-like…
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) at cosmological distances have recently been discovered, whose duration is about milliseconds. We argue that the observed short duration is difficult to explain by giant flares of soft gamma-ray repeaters, though their event rate and energetics are consistent with FRBs. Here we discuss binary neutron star (NS-NS) mergers as a possible origin of FRBs. The FRB rate is within the plausible range of NS-NS merger rate and its cosmological evolution, while a large fraction of NS-NS mergers must produce observable FRBs. A likely radiation mechanism is coherent radio emission …
Detecting and studying galactic gamma-ray sources emitting very-high energy photons sheds light on the acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays presumably created in these sources. Currently, there are few sources emitting photons with energies exceeding 100 TeV. In this work we revisit the unidentified source MGRO J1908+06, initially detected by Milagro, using an updated H.E.S.S. dataset and analysis pipeline. The vicinity of the source contains a supernova remnant and pulsars as well as molecular clouds. This makes the identification of the primary source(s) of galactic cosmic rays as wel…
We perform radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of binary neutron star mergers in numerical relativity on the Japanese "K" supercomputer, taking into account neutrino cooling and heating by an updated leakage-plus-transfer scheme for the first time. Neutron stars are modeled by three modern finite-temperature equations of state (EOS) developed by Hempel and his collaborators. We find that the properties of the dynamical ejecta of the merger such as total mass, average electron fraction, and thermal energy depend strongly on the EOS. Only for a soft EOS (the so-called SFHo), the ejecta mass exce…
We present solutions of force-free pulsar magnetospheres coupled with a uniform external magnetic field aligned with the dipole magnetic moment of the pulsar. The inclusion of the uniform magnetic field has the following consequences: The equatorial current sheet is truncated to a finite length, the fraction of field lines that are open increases, and the open field lines are confined within a cylindrical surface instead of becoming radial. A strong external magnetic field antiparallel to the dipole allows for solutions where the pulsar magnetic field is fully enclosed within an ellipsoidal su…
