We prove the existence of a family of non-trivial solutions of the Liouville equation in dimensions two and four with infinite volume. These solutions are perturbations of a finite-volume solution of the same equation in one dimension less. In particular, they are periodic in one variable and decay linearly to $-\infty$ in the other variables. In dimension two, we also prove that the periods are arbitrarily close to $πk, k \in \mathbb{N}$ (from the positive side). The main tool we employ is bifurcation theory in weighted Hölder spaces.
In several fields of Physics, Chemistry and Ecology, some models are described by Liouville systems. In this article we first prove a uniqueness result for a Liouville system in $\mathbb R^2$. Then we establish an uniform estimate for bubbling solutions of a locally defined Liouville system near an isolated blowup point. The uniqueness result, as well as the local uniform estimates are crucial ingredients for obtaining a priori estimate, degree counting formulas and existence results for Liouville systems defined on Riemann surfaces.
We study the triviality of the solutions of weighted superlinear heat equations on Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci tensor. We prove a Liouville--type theorem for solutions bounded from below with nonnegative initial data, under an integral growth condition on the weight.
We are concerned with a super-Liouville equation on compact surfaces with genus larger than one, obtaining the first non-trivial existence result for this class of problems via min-max methods. In particular we make use of a Nehari manifold and, after showing the validity of the Palais-Smale condition, we exhibit either a mountain pass or linking geometry.
In this paper we study the Liouville type problem for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations in $\Bbb R^3$. We deduce an asymptotic formula for an integral involving the head pressure, $Q=\frac12 |v|^2 +p$, and its derivative over domains enclosed by level surfaces of $Q$. This formula provides us with new sufficient condition for the triviality of solution to the Navier-Stokes equations.
Uniqueness of Leray solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations is a challenging open problem. In this article we will study this problem for the 3D stationary Navier-Stokes equations and under some additional hypotheses, stated in terms of Lebesgue and Morrey spaces, we will show that the trivial solution U = 0 is the unique solution. This type of results are known as Liouville theorems.
We construct sign-changing concentrating solutions for a mean field equation describing turbulent Euler flows with variable vortex intensities and arbitrary orientation. We study the effect of variable intensities and orientation on the bubbling profile and on the location of the vortex points.
This note is devoted to investigating Liouville type properties of the two dimensional stationary incompressible Magnetohydrodynamics equations. More precisely, under smallness conditions only on the magnetic field, we show that there are no non-trivial solutions to MHD equations either the Dirichlet integral or some $L^p$ norm of the velocity-magnetic fields are finite. In particular, these results generalize the corresponding Liouville type properties for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, such as Gilbarg-Weinberger \cite{GW1978} and Koch-Nadirashvili-Seregin-Sverak \cite{KNSS}, to the MHD sett…
In this paper we prove a Liouville type theorem for the stationary MHD and the stationary Hall-MHD systems. Assuming suitable growth condition at infinity for the mean oscillations for the potential functions, we show that the solutions are trivial. These results generalize the previous results obtained by two of the current authors in [6]. To prove our main theorems we use a refined iteration argument.

Uniqueness of the trivial solution (the zero solution) for the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations is an interesting problem who has known several recent contributions. These results are also known as the Liouville type problem for the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations. In the setting of the $L^p-$ spaces, when $3\leq p \leq 9/2$ it is known that the trivial solution of these equations is the unique one. In this note, we extend this previous result to other values of the parameter $p$. More precisely, we prove that the velocity field must be zero provided that it belongs to the $L^p -$ spa…
We prove Liouville type theorems for the self-similar solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. One of our results generalizes the previous ones by Nečas-Ružička-Šverak and Tsai. Using the Liouville type theorem we also remove a scenario of asymtotically self-similar blow-up for the Navier-Stokes equations with the profile belonging to $L^{p, \infty} (\Bbb R^3)$ with $p> \frac{3}{2}$.
We prove several Liouville type results for stationary solutions of the $d$-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. In particular, we show that when the dimension $d \geqslant 4$, the natural requirements $ρ\in L^{\infty} (\mathbbm{R}^d)$, $v \in \dot{H}^1 (\mathbbm{R}^d)$ suffice to guarantee that the solution is trivial. For dimensions $d=2,3$, we assume the extra condition $v \in L^{\frac{3d}{d-1}}(\mathbb R^d)$. This improves a recent result of Chae (2012).
We study Beltrami flows in the setting of weak solution to the stationary Euler equations in $\Bbb R^3$. For this weak Beltrami flow we prove the regularity and the Liouville property. In particular, we show that if tangential part of the velocity has certain decay property at infinity, then the solution becomes trivial. This decay condition of of the velocity is weaker than the previously known sufficient conditions for the Liouville property of the Betrami flows. For the proof we establish a mean value formula and other various formula for the tangential and the normal components of the weak…
In this paper we prove three different Liouville type theorems for the steady Navier-Stokes equations in $\Bbb R^3$. In the first theorem we improve logarithmically the well-known $L^{\frac92} (\Bbb R^3)$ result. In the second theorem we present a sufficient condition for the trivially of the solution($v=0$) in terms of the head pressure, $Q=\frac12 |v|^2 +p$. The imposed integrability condition here has the same scaling property as the Dirichlet integral. In the last theorem we present Fubini type condition, which guarantee $v=0$.
We provide some Liouville theorems for ancient nonnegative solutions of the heat equation on a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold with Ricci curvature bounded from below. We determine growth conditions ensuring triviality of the latters, showing their optimality through examples.
We prove that suitable weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations exhibit Type I singularities if and only if there exists a non-trivial mild bounded ancient solution satisfying a Type I decay condition. The main novelty is in the reverse direction, which is based on the idea of zooming out on a regular solution to generate a singularity. By similar methods, we prove a Liouville theorem for ancient solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations bounded in $L^3$ along a backward sequence of times.
In this paper we prove Liouville type theorem for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations in $\Bbb R^3$ under the assumptions on the relative decays of velocity, pressure and the head pressure. More precisely, we show that any smooth solution $(u,p)$ of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations satisfying $u(x) \to 0$ as $|x|\to +\infty$ and the condition of finite Dirichlet integral $\int_{\Bbb R^3} | \nabla u|^2 dx <+\infty $ is trivial, if either $|u|/|Q|=O(1)$ or $|p|/|Q| =O(1) $ as $|x|\to \infty$, where $|Q|=\frac12 |u|^2 +p$ is the head pressure.
The question of triviality of solutions of the semilinear Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equation, \[ Δw-\frac{1}{2} \langle x,\nabla w\rangle-\fracλ{p-1}w+|w|^{p-1}w=0, \] is considered. It is shown, that if $p>1$ is Sobolev subcritical or critical and $λ\leq 1$, then all bounded entire solutions are constant. Moreover, in the critical case, the same conclusion holds in the subclass of radial solutions provided that $n\geq 4$ and $λ\in \left[\frac{3 n}{2(n-1)},2\right]$.
We study Liouville type of theorems for the Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations on $\Bbb R^N$, $N\geq 2$. Specifically, we prove that if a weak solution $(v,p)$ satisfies $|v|^2 +|p| \in L^1 (0,T; L^1(\Bbb R^N, w_1(x)dx))$ and $\int_{\Bbb R^N} p(x,t)w_2 (x)dx \geq0$ for some weight functions $w_1(x)$ and $w_2 (x)$, then the solution is trivial, namely $v=0$ almost everywhere on $\Bbb R^N \times (0, T)$. Similar results hold for the MHD Equations on $\Bbb R^N$, $N\geq3$.
We prove Liouville type of theorems for weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations. In particular, if the pressure satisfies $ p\in L^1 (0,T; L^1 (\Bbb R^N))$ with $\int_{\Bbb R^N} p(x,t)dx \geq 0$, then the corresponding velocity should be trivial, namely $v=0$ on $\Bbb R^N \times (0,T)$. In particular, this is the case when $p\in L^1 (0,T; \mathcal{H}^1 (\Bbb R^N))$, where $\mathcal{H}^1 (\Bbb R^N)$ the Hardy space. On the other hand, we have equipartition of energy over each component, if $p\in L^1 (0,T; L^1 (\Bbb R^N))$ with $\int_{\Bbb R^N} p(x,t)dx <0$. Similar results h…
We are concerned with super-Liouville equations on the two sphere, which have variational structure with a strongly-indefinite functional. We prove the existence of non-trivial solutions by combining the use of Nehari manifolds, balancing conditions and bifurcation theory.
We study the symmetry properties of limit profiles of nonautonomous nonlinear parabolic systems with Dirichlet boundary conditions in radial bounded domains. In the case of competitive systems, we show that if the initial profiles satisfy a reflectional inequality with respect to a hyperplane, then all limit profiles are foliated Schwarz symmetric with respect to antipodal points. One of the main ingredients in the proof is a new parabolic version of Serrin's boundary point lemma. Results on radial symmetry of semi-trivial profiles are discussed also for noncompetitive systems.
We consider a quasilinear equation involving the $n-$Laplacian and an exponential nonlinearity, a problem that includes the celebrated Liouville equation in the plane as a special case. For a non-compact sequence of solutions it is known that the exponential nonlinearity converges, up to a subsequence, to a sum of Dirac measures. By performing a precise local asymptotic analysis we complete such a result by showing that the corresponding Dirac masses are quantized as multiples of a given one, related to the mass of limiting profiles after rescaling according to the classification result obtain…
In this paper we study the Liouville-type properties for solutions to the steady incompressible Euler equations with forces in $\Bbb R^N$. If we assume "single signedness condition" on the force, then we can show that a $C^1 (\Bbb R^N)$ solution $(v,p)$ with $|v|^2+ |p|\in L^{\frac{q}{2}}(\Bbb R^N)$, $q\in (\frac{3N}{N-1}, \infty)$ is trivial, $v=0$. For the solution of of the steady Navier-Stokes equations, satisfying $v(x)\to 0$ as $|x|\to \infty$, the condition $\int_{\Bbb R^3} |Δv|^{\frac65} dx<\infty$, which is stronger than the important D-condition, $\int_{\Bbb R^3} |\nabla v|^2 dx <\in…
We study blow-up and quantization phenomena for a sequence of solutions $(u_k)$ to the prescribed $Q$-curvature problem $$ (-Δ)^nu_k= Q_ke^{2nu_k}\quad \text{in }Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{2n},\quad \int_Ωe^{2nu_k}dx\leq C,$$ under natural assumptions on $Q_k$. It is well-known that, up to a subsequence, either $(u_k)$ is bounded in a suitable norm, or there exists $β_k\to\infty$ such that $ u_k=β_k(φ+o(1))$ in $Ω\setminus (S_1\cup S_φ)$ for some non-trivial non-positive $n$-harmonic function $φ$ and for a finite set $S_1$, where $S_φ$ is the zero set of $φ$. We prove quantization of the total curvat…
In this paper we prove a Liouville type theorem for generalized stationary Navier-Stokes systems in $\Bbb R^3$, which model non-Newtonian fluids, where the Laplacian term $Δu$ is replaced by the corresponding non linear operator $\bA_p( u)=\nabla \cdot ( |\bD(u)|^{p-2} \bD(u))$ with $ \bD(u) = \frac{1}{2} (\nabla u + (\nabla u)^{ \top})$, $3/2<p< 3$. In the case $3/2< p\le 9/5$ we show that a suitable weak solution $u\in W^{1, p}(\Bbb R^3)$ satisfying $ \liminf_{R \rightarrow \infty} |u_{ B(R)}| =0$ is trivial, i.e. $u\equiv 0$. On the other hand, for $9/5<p<3$ we impose the condition for the …
We establish blow-up profiles for any blowing-up sequence of solutions of general conformally invariant fully nonlinear elliptic equations on Euclidean domains. We prove that (i) the distance between blow-up points is bounded from below by a universal positive number, (ii) the solutions are very close to a single standard bubble in a universal positive distance around each blow-up point, and (iii) the heights of these bubbles are comparable by a universal factor. As an application of this result, we establish a quantitative Liouville theorem.
Under the diffusion scaling and a scaling assumption on the microscopic component, a non-classical fluid dynamic system was derived in \cite{BGLY} that is related to the system of ghost effect derived in \cite{Sone-2} in different settings. This paper aims to justify this limit system for a non-trivial background profile with slab symmetry. The result reveals not only the diffusion phenomena in the temperature and density, but also the flow of higher order in Knudsen number due to the gradient of the temperature. Precisely, we show that the solution to the Boltzmann equation converges to a dif…
In this paper we study Liouville properties of smooth steady axially symmetric solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. First, we provide another version of the Liouville theorem of \cite{kpr15} in the case of zero swirl, where we replaced the Dirichlet integrability condition by mild decay conditions. Then we prove some Liouville theorems under the assumption $\|\f{u_r}{r}{\bf 1}_{\{u_r< -\f 1r\}}\|_{L^{3/2}(\mbR^3)}< C_{\sharp}$ where $C_{\sharp}$ is a universal constant to be specified. In particular, if $u_r(r,z)\geq -\f1r$ for $\forall (r,z)\in[0,\oo)\times\mbR$, then ${\bf u}\equiv 0$. …

We consider the fractional elliptic inequality with variable-exponent nonlinearity $$ (-Δ)^{\fracα{2}} u+λ\, Δu \geq |u|^{p(x)}, \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $N\geq 1$, $α\in (0,2)$, $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ is a constant, $p: \mathbb{R}^N\to (1,\infty)$ is a measurable function, and $(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}$ is the fractional Laplacian operator of order $\fracα{2}$. A Liouville-type theorem is established for the considered problem. Namely, we obtain sufficient conditions under which the only weak solution is the trivial one. Next, we extend our study to systems of fractional elliptic inequalities with …
In this paper we study the Liouville type properties for solutions to the steady incompressible Navier-Stoks equations in $\mathbf{R}^{3}$. It is shown that any solution to the steady Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbf{R}^{3}$ with finite Dirichlet integral and vanishing velocity field at far fields must be trivial. This solves an open problem. The key ingredients of the proof include a Hodge decomposition of the energy-flux and the observation that the square of the deformation matrix lies in the local Hardy space. As a by-product, we also obtain a Liouville type theorem for the steady densi…
We prove $m$-dimensional symmetry results, that we call $m$-Liouville theorems, for stable and monotone solutions of the following nonuniformly elliptic equation \begin{eqnarray*}\label{mainequ} - div(γ(\mathbf x') \nabla u(\mathbf x)) =λ(\mathbf x' ) f(u(\mathbf x)) \ \ \text{for}\ \ \mathbf x=(\mathbf x',\mathbf x'')\in\mathbf{R}^d\times\mathbf{R}^{s}=\mathbf{R}^n, \end{eqnarray*} where $0\le m<n$ and $0<λ,γ$ are smooth functions and $f\in C^1(\mathbf R)$. The interesting fact is that the decay assumptions on the weight function $γ(\mathbf x') $ play the fundamental role in deriving $m$-Liou…

We consider a two-species competition-diffusion system involving a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$ and discuss the validity of formal asymptotic expansions of solutions near the sharp interface limit $\varepsilon\approx0$. We assume that the corresponding ODE system has two stable equilibria. As in the scalar Allen--Cahn equation, it is known that the motion of the sharp interfaces of such systems is governed by the mean curvature flow with a driving force. The formal expansion also suggests that the profile of the transition layers converges to that of a traveling wave solution as $\varepsilo…
The aim of this work is to establish a instability study for stationary kink and antikink/kink profiles solutions for the sine-Gordon equation on a metric graph with a structure represented by a Y-junction so-called a Josephson tricrystal junction. By considering boundary conditions at the graph-vertex of $δ'$-interaction type, it is shown that these kink-soliton type stationary profiles are linearly (and nonlinearly) unstable. The extension theory of symmetric operators, Sturm-Liouville oscillation results and analytic perturbation theory of operators are fundamental ingredients in the stabil…
We are interested in the existence of depolarization waves in the human brain. These waves propagate in the grey matter and are absorbed in the white matter. We consider a two-dimensional model $u_t=Δu + f(u) \1_{|y|\leq R} - αu \1_{|y|>R}$, with $f$ a bistable nonlinearity taking effect only on the domain $\Rm\times [-R,R]$, which represents the grey matter layer. We study the existence, the stability and the energy of non-trivial asymptotic profiles of possible travelling fronts. For this purpose, we present dynamical systems technics and graphic criteria based on Sturm-Liouville theory and …
In this note we show that Luo-Hou's ansatz for the self-similar solution to the axisymmetric solution to the 3D Euler equations leads to triviality of the solution under suitable decay condition of the blow-up profile. The equations for the blow-up profile reduces to an over-determined system of partial differential equations, whose only solution with decay is the trivial solution. We also propose a generalization of Luo-Hou's ansatz. Using the vanishing of the normal velocity at the boundary, we show that this generalized self-similar ansatz also leads to a trivial solution. These results sho…
