In this article we study the limit when $α\to 0$ of solutions to the $α$-Euler system in the half-plane, with no-slip boundary conditions, to weak solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equations with non-negative initial vorticity in the space of bounded Radon measures in $H^{-1}$. This result extends the analysis done in arXiv:1611.05300 and arXiv:1403.5682. It requires a substantially distinct approach, analogous to that used for Delort's Theorem, and a new detailed investigation of the relation between (no-slip) filtered velocity and potential vorticity in the half-plane.
We construct co-rotating and traveling vortex sheets for 2D incompressible Euler equation, which are supported on several small closed curves. These examples represent a new type of vortex sheet solutions other than two known classes. The construction is based on Birkhoff-Rott operator, and accomplished by using implicit function theorem at point vortex solutions with suitably chosen function spaces.
We study weak solutions of the two-dimensional (2D) filtered Euler equations whose vorticity is a finite Radon measure and velocity has locally finite kinetic energy, which is called the vortex sheet solution. The filtered Euler equations are a regularized model based on a spatial filtering to the Euler equations. The 2D filtered Euler equations have a unique global weak solution for measure valued initial vorticity, while the 2D Euler equations require initial vorticity to be in the vortex sheet class with a distinguished sign for the existence of global solutions. In this paper, we prove tha…
We present an alpha-regularization of the Birkhoff-Rott equation, induced by the two-dimensional Euler-alpha equations, for the vortex sheet dynamics. We show that initially smooth self-avoiding vortex sheet remains smooth for all times under the alpha-regularized dynamics, provided the initial density of vorticity is an integrable function over the curve with respect to the arc-length measure.
We construct infinitely many admissible weak solutions to the 2D incompressible Euler equations for vortex sheet initial data. Our initial datum has vorticity concentrated on a simple closed curve in a suitable Hölder space and the vorticity may not have a distinguished sign. Our solutions are obtained by means of convex integration; they are smooth outside a "turbulence" zone which grows linearly in time around the vortex sheet. As a byproduct, this approach shows how the growth of the turbulence zone is controlled by the local energy inequality and measures the maximal initial dissipation ra…
In this article we consider the evolution of vortex sheets in the plane both as a weak solution of the two dimensional incompressible Euler equations and as a (weak) solution of the Birkhoff-Rott equations. We begin by discussing the classical Birkhoff-Rott equations with respect to arbitrary parametrizations of the sheet. We introduce a notion of weak solution to the Birkhoff-Rott system and we prove consistency of this notion with the classical formulation of the equations. Our main purpose in this paper is to present a sharp criterion for the equivalence of the weak Euler and weak Birkhoff-…
We present an alpha-regularization of the Birkhoff-Rott equation, induced by the two-dimensional Euler-alpha equations, for the vortex sheet dynamics. We show the convergence of the solutions of Euler-alpha equations to a weak solution of the Euler equations for initial vorticity being a finite Radon measure of fixed sign, which includes the vortex sheets case. We also show that, provided the initial density of vorticity is an integrable function over the curve with respect to the arc-length measure, (i) an initially Lipschitz chord arc vortex sheet (curve), evolving under the BR-alpha equatio…
We show the short-time existence and nonlinear stability of vortex sheets for the nonisentropic compressible Euler equations in two spatial dimensions, based on the weakly linear stability result of Morando--Trebeschi (2008) [20]. The missing normal derivatives are compensated through the equations of the linearized vorticity and entropy when deriving higher-order energy estimates. The proof of the resolution for this nonlinear problem follows from certain \emph{a priori} tame estimates on the effective linear problem {in the usual Sobolev spaces} and a suitable Nash--Moser iteration scheme.
We investigate a steady planar flow of an ideal fluid in a (bounded or unbounded) domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$. Let $κ_i\not=0$, $i=1,\ldots, m$, be $m$ arbitrary fixed constants. For any given non-degenerate critical point $\mathbf{x}_0=(x_{0,1},\ldots,x_{0,m})$ of the Kirchhoff-Routh function defined on $Ω^m$ corresponding to $(κ_1,\ldots, κ_m)$, we construct a family of stationary planar flows with vortex sheets that have large vorticity amplitude and are perturbations of small circles centered near $x_i$, $i=1,\ldots,m$. The proof is accomplished via the implicit function theorem with su…
We consider the Euler system of gas dynamics endowed with the incomplete equation of state relating the internal energy to the mass density and the pressure. We show that any sufficiently smooth solution can be recovered as a vanishing viscosity - heat conductivity limit of the Navier--Stokes--Fourier system with a properly defined temperature. The result is unconditional in the case of the Navier type (slip) boundary conditions and extends to the no-slip condition for the velocity under some extra hypotheses of Kato's type concerning the behavior of the fluid in the boundary layer.
We show that, in general, the solutions to the initial-boundary value problem for the Navier-Stokes equations under a widely adopted Navier-type slip boundary condition do not converge, as the viscosity goes to zero (in any arbitrarily small neighborhood of the initial time), to the solution of the Euler equations under the classical zero-flux boundary condition, and same smooth initial data. Convergence does not hold with respect to any space-topology which is sufficiently strong as to imply that the solution to the Euler equations inherits the complete slip type boundary condition (see the T…
In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit problem for the 3-dimensional (3D) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a general bounded smooth domain of $R^3$ with the generalized Navier-slip boundary conditions (\ref{VSg}). Some uniform estimates on rates of convergence in $C([0,T],L^2(Ω))$ and $C([0,T],H^1(Ω))$ of the solutions to the corresponding solutions of the idea Euler equations with the standard slip boundary condition are obtained.

We consider self-similar solutions of the 2d incompressible Euler equations. We construct a class of solutions with vorticity forming algebraic spirals near the origin, in analogy to vortex sheets rolling up into algebraic spirals.

In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit for solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with a Navier slip boundary condition on general compact and smooth domains in $\mathbf{R}^3$. We first obtain the higher order regularity estimates for the solutions to Prandtl's equation boundary layers. Furthermore, we prove that the strong solution to Navier-Stokes equations converges to the Eulerian one in $C([0,T];H^1(Ω))$ and $L^\infty((0,T)\timesø)$, where $T$ is independent of the viscosity, provided that initial velocity is regular enough. Furthermore, rates of convergence are obt…
We prove that if the local second-order structure function exponents in the inertial range remain positive uniformly in viscosity, then any spacetime $L^2$ weak limit of Leray--Hopf weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations on any bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d= 2,3$ is a weak solution of the Euler equations. This holds for both no-slip and Navier-friction conditions with viscosity-dependent slip length. The result allows for the emergence of non-unique, possibly dissipative, limiting weak solutions of the Euler equations.
We prove the existence and stability of smooth solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations near plane Poiseuille-Couette flow. Consequently, we also provide the zero viscosity limit of the 2D steady Navier-Stokes equations to the steady Euler equations. First, in the absence of any external force, we prove that there exist smooth solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations which are stable under infinitesimal perturbations of plane Poiseuille-Couette flow. In particular, if the basic flow is the Couette flow, then we can prove that the flow is stable for any finite perturbation small e…
There are a few examples of solutions to the incompressible Euler equations which are piecewise smooth with a discontinuity of the tangential velocity across a hypersurface evolving in time: the so-called vortex sheets. An important open problem is to determine whether or not these solutions can be obtained as zero viscosity limits of the incompressible Navier-Stokes solutions in the energy space. In this paper we establish a couple of sufficient conditions similar to the one obtained by Kato in [T.~Kato. Remarks on zero viscosity limit for nonstationary Navier-Stokes flows with boundary. Semi…
We study the well-posedness of compressible vortex sheets and entropy waves in two-dimensional steady supersonic Euler flows over Lipschitz walls with $BV$ incoming flows. Both the Lipschitz wall of $BV$ tangential angle function and the $BV$ incoming flow perturb a background strong vortex sheet/entropy wave. In particular, when the total variation of the incoming flow perturbation around the background strong vortex sheet/entropy wave is small, we prove that the two-dimensional steady supersonic Euler flows containing a strong vortex sheet/entropy wave past the Lipschitz wall are $L^{1}$--st…
We consider the interface problem between two incompressible and inviscid fluids in the presence of surface tension. Following the geometric approach of [Shatah,J.;Zeng,C. A priori estimates for Fluid Interface Problems. CPAM, vol.16, no.6, June 2008] we show that solutions to this problem converge to solutions of the free-boundary Euler equations in vacuum as one of the densities goes to zero.
We study a generalization of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system for an incompressible fluid where the deviatoric part of the Cauchy stress tensor is related to the symmetric part of the velocity gradient via a maximal monotone 2-graph that is continuously parametrized by the temperature. As such, the considered fluid may go through transitions between three of the following regimes: it can flow as a Bingham fluid for a specific value of the temperature, while it can behave as the Navier-Stokes fluid for another value of the temperature or, for yet another temperature, it can respond as the Euler…
We prove some criteria for the convergence of weak solutions of the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier slip boundary conditions to a strong solution of incompressible Euler. The slip rate depends on a power of the Reynolds number, and it is increasingly apparent that the power 1 may be critical for L^2 convergence, as hinted at in [hal-01093331].
The convergence of solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations set in a domain with boundary to solutions of the Euler equations in the large Reynolds number limit is a challenging open problem both in 2 and 3 space dimensions. In particular it is distinct from the question of existence in the large of a smooth solution of the initial-boundary value problem for the Euler equations. The present paper proposes three results in that direction. First, if the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations satisfy a slip boundary condition with vanishing slip coefficient in the large Reynolds …
We consider the dynamics of a vortex sheet that evolves by the Birkhoff-Rott equations. The fluid evolution is understood as a weak solution of the incompressible Euler equations where the vorticity is given by a delta function on a curve multiplied by an amplitude. The solutions we study are with finite energy, which implies zero mean amplitude. In this context we choose a parametrization for the motion of the vortex sheet for which the equation is well-posed for analytic initial data. For the equation of the amplitude we show ill-posedness for non-analytic initial data.
In the first part of the paper we provide a new classification of incompressible fluids characterized by a continuous monotone relation between the velocity gradient and the Cauchy stress. The considered class includes Euler fluids, Navier-Stokes fluids, classical power-law fluids as well as stress power-law fluids, and their various generalizations including the fluids that we refer to as activated fluids, namely fluids that behave as an Euler fluid prior activation and behave as a viscous fluid once activation takes place. We also present a classification concerning boundary conditions that …
We are concerned with supersonic vortex sheets for the Euler equations of compressible inviscid fluids in two space dimensions. For the problem with constant coefficients, in [10] the authors have derived a pseudo-differential equation which describes the time evolution of the discontinuity front of the vortex sheet. In agreement with the classical stability analysis, the problem is weakly stable if $|[v\cdotτ]|>2\sqrt{2}\,c$, and the well-posedness was obtained in standard weighted Sobolev spaces. The aim of the present paper is to improve the result of [10], by showing the existence of the s…
In this paper, we investigate the uniform regularity for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system with general Navier-slip boundary conditions (1.6) and the inviscid limit to the compressible Euler system. It is shown that there exists a unique strong solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with general Navier-slip boundary conditions in an interval of time which is uniform in the vanishing viscosity limit. The solution is uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space and is uniform bounded in $W^{1,\infty}$. It is also shown that the boundary layer for the density is weak…
The linear stability with variable coefficients of the vortex sheets for the two-dimensional compressible elastic flows is studied. As in our earlier work on the linear stability with constant coefficients, the problem has a free boundary which is characteristic, and also the Kreiss-Lopatinskii condition is not uniformly satisfied. In addition, the roots of the Lopatinskii determinant of the para-linearized system may coincide with the poles of the system. Such a new collapsing phenomenon causes serious difficulties when applying the bicharacteristic extension method. Motivated by our method i…
We consider the problem of the strong convergence, as the viscosity goes to zero, of the solutions to the three-dimensional evolutionary Navier-Stokes equations under a Navier slip-type boundary condition to the solution of the Euler equations under the zero flux boundary condition. In spite of the arbitrarily strong convergence results proved in the flat boundary case, see [4], it was shown in reference [5] that the result is false in general, by constructing an explicit family of smooth initial data in the sphere, for which the result fails. Our aim here is to present a more general, simpler…
We derive the incompressible Euler equations with heat convection with the no-penetration boundary condition from the Boltzmann equation with the diffuse boundary in the hydrodynamic limit for the scale of large Reynold number. Inspired by the recent framework in [30], we consider the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with no-slip boundary conditions as an intermediary approximation and develop a Hilbert-type expansion of the Boltzmann equation around the global Maxwellian that allows the nontrivial heat transfer by convection in the limit. To justify our expansion and the limit, a new direct estim…
In this paper, we consider the small viscosity limit problem for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in a 2D exterior domain with impermeable boundary conditions , and the corresponding Euler equations have vortex sheet solutions. We obtain that away from the boundary and the contact discontinuous the isentropic compressible viscous flow can be approximated by the corresponding inviscid flow, near the boundary (the contact discontinuous) there is a boundary layer (vortex layer)for the angular velocity in the leading order expansion of solution, while the radial velocity and the …
We consider the convergence in the $L^2$ norm, uniformly in time, of the Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions to the Euler equations with slip boundary conditions. We prove that if the Oleinik conditions of no back-flow in the trace of the Euler flow, and of a lower bound for the Navier-Stokes vorticity is assumed in a Kato-like boundary layer, then the inviscid limit holds.
The linear stability of rectilinear compressible vortex sheets is studied for two-dimensional isentropic elastic flows. This problem has a free boundary and the boundary is characteristic. A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for the linear stability of the rectilinear vortex sheets. More precisely, it is shown that, besides the stable supersonic zone, the elasticity exerts an additional stable subsonic zone. A new feature for elastic flow is found that there is a class of states in the interior of subsonic zone where the stability of such states is weaker than the stability of oth…
We are concerned with supersonic vortex sheets for the Euler equations of compressible inviscid fluids in two space dimensions. For the problem with constant coefficients we derive an evolution equation for the discontinuity front of the vortex sheet. This is a pseudo-differential equation of order two. In agreement with the classical stability analysis, if the jump of the tangential component of the velocity satisfies $|[v\cdotτ]|<2\sqrt{2}\,c$ (here $c$ denotes the sound speed) the symbol is elliptic and the problem is ill-posed. On the contrary, if $|[v\cdotτ]|>2\sqrt{2}\,c$, then the probl…
In fluid dynamics, an interface splash singularity occurs when a locally smooth interface self-intersects in finite time. By means of elementary arguments, we prove that such a singularity cannot occur in finite time for vortex sheet evolution, i.e. for the two-phase incompressible Euler equations. We prove this by contradiction; we assume that a splash singularity does indeed occur in finite time. Based on this assumption, we find precise blow-up rates for the components of the velocity gradient which, in turn, allow us to characterize the geometry of the evolving interface just prior to self…
The existence of a solution to the two dimensional incompressible Euler equations in singular domains was established in [Gérard-Varet and Lacave, The 2D Euler equation on singular domains, submitted]. The present work is about the uniqueness of such a solution when the domain is the exterior or the interior of a simply connected set with corners, although the velocity blows up near these corners. In the exterior of a curve with two end-points, it is showed in [Lacave, Two Dimensional Incompressible Ideal Flow Around a Thin Obstacle Tending to a Curve, Ann. IHP, Anl \textbf{26} (2009), 1121-11…
We are concerned with the nonlinear stability of vortex sheets for the relativistic Euler equations in three-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. This is a nonlinear hyperbolic problem with a characteristic free boundary. In this paper, we introduce a new symmetrization by choosing appropriate functions as primary unknowns. A necessary and sufficient condition for the weakly linear stability of relativistic vortex sheets is obtained by analyzing the roots of the Lopatinski\uı determinant associated to the constant coefficient linearized problem. Under this stability condition, we show that the var…
This paper concerns with the existence of transonic shocks for steady Euler flows in a 3-D axisymmetric cylindrical nozzle, which are governed by the Euler equations with the slip boundary condition on the wall of the nozzle and a receiver pressure at the exit. Mathematically, it can be formulated as a free boundary problem with the shock front being the free boundary to be determined. In dealing with the free boundary problem, one of the key points is determining the position of the shock front. To this end, a free boundary problem for the linearized Euler system will be proposed, whose solut…
We establish the existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions with large vorticity and weak solutions with vortex sheets/entropy waves for the steady Euler equations for both compressible and incompressible fluids in arbitrary infinitely long nozzles. We first develop a new approach to establish the existence of smooth solutions without assumptions on the sign of the second derivatives of the horizontal velocity, or the Bernoulli and entropy functions, at the inlet for the smooth case. Then the existence for the smooth case can be applied to construct approximate solutions to establish the exi…
For a two-dimensional steady supersonic Euler flow past a convex cornered wall with right angle, a characteristic discontinuity (vortex sheet and/or entropy wave) is generated, which separates the supersonic flow from the gas at rest (hence subsonic). We proved that such a transonic characteristic discontinuity is structurally stable under small perturbations of the upstream supersonic flow in $BV$. The existence of a weak entropy solution and Lipschitz continuous free boundary (i.e. characteristic discontinuity) is established. To achieve this, the problem is formulated as a free boundary pro…
Nishida-Smoller type large solutions and exponential growth for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions in 3D bounded domain
We consider a sequence of Leray-Hopf weak solutions of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations on a bounded domain, in the vanishing viscosity limit. We provide sufficient conditions on the associated vorticity measures, away from the boundary, which ensure that as the viscosity vanishes the sequence converges to a weak solution of the Euler equations. These assumptions are consistent with vortex sheet solutions of the Euler equations.
We prove the existence of non-negative measure- and $H^{-1}$-valued vorticity solutions to the stochastic 2D Euler equations with transport vorticity noise, starting from any non-negative vortex sheet. This extends the result by Delort (J.Amer.Math.Soc. 1991) to the stochastic case.
In this work, we investigate the small-time global exact controllability of the Navier-Stokes equation, both towards the null equilibrium state and towards weak trajectories. We consider a viscous incompressible fluid evolving within a smooth bounded domain, either in 2D or in 3D. The controls are only located on a small part of the boundary, intersecting all its connected components. On the remaining parts of the boundary, the fluid obeys a Navier slip-with-friction boundary condition. Even though viscous boundary layers appear near these uncontrolled boundaries, we prove that small-time glob…
We establish the local existence of pathwise solutions for the stochastic Euler equations in a three-dimensional bounded domain with slip boundary conditions and a very general nonlinear multiplicative noise. In the two-dimensional case we obtain the global existence of these solutions with additive or linear-multiplicative noise. Lastly, we show that, in the three dimensional case, the addition of linear multiplicative noise provides a regularizing effect; the global existence of solutions occurs with high probability if the initial data is sufficiently small, or if the noise coefficient is s…
