It has been occasionally suggested that Fe abundances of K dwarfs derived from Fe I and Fe II lines show considerable discrepancies and oxygen abundances determined from high-excitation O I 7771-5 triplet lines are appreciably overestimated (the problem becoming more serious towards lower Teff), which however has not yet been widely confirmed. With an aim to clarify this issue, we spectroscopically determined the atmospheric parameters of 148 G-K dwarfs (Hyades cluster stars and field stars) by assuming the classical Fe I/Fe II ionization equilibrium as usual, and determined their oxygen abundances by applying the non-LTE spectrum fitting analysis to O I 7771-5 lines. It turned out that the resulting parameters did not show any significant inconsistency with those determined by other methods (for example, the mean differences in Teff and log g from the well-determined solutions of Hyades dwarfs are mostly <~100K and <~0.1dex). Likewise, the oxygen abundances of Hyades stars are around [O/H]~+0.2dex (consistent with the metallicity of this cluster) without exhibiting any systematic Teff-dependence. Accordingly, we conclude that parameters can be spectroscopically evaluated to a sufficient precision in the conventional manner (based on the Saha-Boltzmann equation for Fe I/Fe II) and oxygen abundances can be reliably determined from the O I 7771-5 triplet for K dwarfs as far as stars of Teff>~4500K are concerned. We suspect that previously reported strongly Teff-dependent discrepancies may have stemmed mainly from overestimation of weak-line strengths and/or improper Teff scale.
We have obtained low and medium resolution spectra of 9 brown dwarf candidate members of Coma Berenices and the Hyades using SpEX on the NASA InfaRed Telescope Facility and LIRIS on the William Herschel Telescope. We conclude that 7 of these objects are indeed late M or early L dwarfs, and that two are likely members of Coma Berenices, and four of the Hyades. Two objects, cbd40 and Hy3 are suggested to be a field L dwarfs, although there is also a possibility that Hy3 is an unresolved binary belonging to the cluster. These objects have masses between 71 and 53 M$_{\rm Jup}$, close to the hydro…
In an attempt to carry out a systematic study on the behavior of the photospheric abundances of Li, C, and O (along with Fe) for Hyades main-sequence stars in the T_eff range of ~5000-7000K, we conducted an extensive spectrum-synthesis analysis applied to four spectral regions (comprising lines of Fe-group elements, Li I 6708 line, C I 7111-7119 lines, and O I 6156-8 lines) based on the high-dispersion spectra of 68 selected F-G type stars belonging to this cluster. The abundances of C and O turned out to be fairly uniform in a marginally supersolar level such like the case of Fe: <[C/H]> = +0…
We present the results of photometric, astrometric, and spectroscopic follow-up of L dwarf candidates identified in the Hyades cluster by Hogan et al. (2008). We obtained low-resolution optical spectroscopy with the OSIRIS spectrograph on the Gran Telescopio de Canarias for all 12 L dwarf candidates as well as new J-band imaging for a subsample of eight to confirm their proper motion. We also present mid-infrared photometry from the Wise Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) for the Hyades L and T dwarf candidates and estimate their spectroscopic distances, effective temperatures, and masses. …
We study the accuracy of spectroscopic RVs by comparing spectroscopic and astrometric RVs for stars of the Hyades open cluster. Rather accurate astrometric RVs are available for the Hyades' stars, based on Hipparcos and on the first Gaia data release. We obtained HARPS spectra for a large sample of Hyades stars, and homogeneously analysed them. After cleaning the sample from binaries, RV variables, and outliers, 71 stars remained. The distribution of the observed RV difference (spectroscopic -- astrometric) is skewed and depends on the star right ascension. This is consistent with the Hyades c…
The Hyades cluster is known to harbour ten so-called classical white dwarf members. Numerous studies through the years have predicted that more than twice this amount of degenerate stars should be associated with the cluster. Using the PPMXL catalog of proper motions and positions, a recent study proposed 17 new white dwarf candidates. We review the membership of these candidates by using published spectroscopic and photometric observations, as well as by simulating the contamination from field white dwarfs. In addition to the ten classical Hyades white dwarfs, we find six white dwarfs that ma…
We fit the upper main sequence of the Praesepe and Hyades open clusters using stellar models with and without rotation. When neglecting rotation, we find that no single isochrone can fit the entire upper main sequence at the clusters' spectroscopic metallicity: more massive stars appear, at high significance, to be younger than less massive stars. This discrepancy is consistent with earlier studies, but vanishes when including stellar rotation. The entire upper main sequence of both clusters is very well-fit by a distribution of 800 Myr-old stars with the spectroscopically measured [Fe/H]=0.12…
Theta^2 Tauri is a detached and single-lined interferometric-spectroscopic binary as well as the most massive binary system of the Hyades cluster. The system revolves in an eccentric orbit with a periodicity of 140.7 days. The secondary has a similar temperature but is less evolved and fainter than the primary. It is also rotating more rapidly. Since the composite spectra are heavily blended, the direct extraction of radial velocities over the orbit of component B was hitherto unsuccessful. Using high-resolution spectroscopic data recently obtained with the Elodie (OHP, France) and Hermes (ORM…
Our aim is to identify substellar members of the nearby Hyades open star cluster to determine the photometric and spectroscopic properties of brown dwarfs at moderately old ages and extend our knowledge of the substellar mass function of the cluster. We cross-matched the 2MASS and WISE public catalogues and measured proper motions to identify low-mass stars and brown dwarf member candidates in an area of a radius of ten degrees around the central region of the Hyades cluster. We employed astrometric and photometric criteria, Gaia data, and a maximum likelihood method developed by our group to …
In several instances chemical abundances of dwarf and giant stars are used simultaneously under the assumption that they share the same abundance scale. This assumption might have implications in different astrophysical contexts. We aim to ascertain a methodology capable of producing a consistent metallicity scale for giants and dwarfs. To achieve that, we analyzed giants and dwarfs in the Hyades open cluster. All these stars have archival high-resolution spectroscopic data obtained with HARPS and UVES. In addition, the giants have interferometric measurements of the angular diameters. We anal…
Young brown dwarfs share many properties with directly imaged giant extrasolar planets. They therefore provide unique laboratories for investigating the full range of temperature and mass encompasses by the growing collection of planets discovered outside our Solar System. Furthermore, if they can be tied to a particular group of coeval stars, they also provide vital anchor points for low-mass empirical isochrones. We have developed a novel procedure for identifying such objects based on their unique 2MASS and AllWISE colors. Using our search criteria, we have identified 50 new, late-type L dw…
Stellar Kinematic Groups are kinematical coherent groups of stars which may share a common origin. These groups spread through the Galaxy over time due to tidal effects caused by galactic rotation and disk heating, however the chemical information survives. The aim of chemical tagging is to show that abundances of every element in the analysis must be homogeneous between members. We have studied the case of the Hyades Supercluster in order to compile a reliable list of members (FGK stars) based on chemical tagging information and spectroscopic age determinations of this supercluster. This info…
The star HD 28363 in the Hyades cluster has been known for over a century as a visual binary with a period of 40 yr. The secondary is, in turn, a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a 21-day period. Here we report extensive spectroscopic monitoring of this hierarchical triple system that reveals the spectral lines of the third star for the first time. Combined with astrometric information, this makes it possible to determine the dynamical masses of all three stars. Only six other binaries in the Hyades have had their individual component masses determined dynamically. We infer the propertie…
We have carried out an analysis of the HST STIS archival spectra of the magnetic white dwarf in the Hyades eclipsing-spectroscopic, post-common envelope binary V471 Tauri, time resolved on the orbit and on the X-ray rotational phase of the magnetic white dwarf. An HST STIS spectrum obtained during primary eclipse reveals a host of transition region/chromospheric emission features including N V (1238, 1242), Si IV (1393, 1402), C IV (1548, 1550) and He II (1640). The spectroscopic characteristics and emission line fluxes of the transition region/chromosphere of the very active, rapidly rotating…
We have exploited the very precise parallaxes, proper motions and photometry of \textit{Gaia}\, Data Release~2 to study white dwarf members of the Hyades star cluster. Gaia photometry and parallaxes for the eight DA white dwarfs confirmed members have been then used to compute absolute magnitudes and colours. These were compared to three independent sets of white dwarf evolutionary tracks, to derive cooling times and white dwarf (final) masses. All sets of models provide the same mass values, with only small differences in the cooling ages. The precision in the derived masses and cooling ages …
We determine the exact physical parameters of the four Hyades cluster K giants, using their parallaxes and atmospheric modeling of our red-channel TIGRE high-resolution spectra. Performing a comparison with well-tested evolutionary tracks, we derive exact masses and evolutionary stages. At an age of 588 ($\pm 60$) Myrs and with a metallicity of Z=0.03 (consistent with the spectroscopic abundances), we find HD~27371 and HD~28307, the two less bright K giants, at the onset of central helium-burning, entering their blue loops with a mass of 2.62 $M_{\odot}$, while the slightly brighter stars HD~2…
Radius inflation continues to be explored as a peculiar occurrence among magnetically active, low-mass stars. Recently Somers et. al. 2017 showed that radius inflation among low-mass stars in the young open cluster M45 (Pleiades Cluster) is correlated to the rotation rate: faster rotators are more inflated. Here we extend that work to a sample of 68 stars of the older open Hyades Cluster. We derive the stars' spectral energy distributions to measure their bolometric fluxes. With spectroscopically defined $T_{\rm eff}$ and {\it Gaia\/} distances we calculate stellar radii using the Stefan-Boltz…
We present the orbital and physical parameters of the detached eclipsing binary V1200~Centauri (ASAS~J135218-3837.3) from the analysis of spectroscopic observations and light curves from the \textit{All Sky Automated Survey} (ASAS) and SuperWASP database. The radial velocities were computed from the high-resolution spectra obtained with the OUC 50-cm telescope and PUCHEROS spectrograph and with 1.2m Euler telescope and CORALIE spectrograph using the cross-correlation technique \textsc{todcor}. We found that the absolute parameters of the system are $M_1= 1.394\pm 0.030$ M$_\odot$, $M_2= 0.866\…
Asteroseismic analysis of solar-like stars allows us to determine physical parameters such as stellar mass, with a higher precision compared to most other methods. Even in a well-studied cluster such as the Hyades, the masses of the red giant stars are not well known, and previous mass estimates are based on model calculations (isochrones). The four known red giants in the Hyades are assumed to be clump (core-helium-burning) stars based on their positions in colour-magnitude diagrams, however asteroseismology offers an opportunity to test this assumption. Using asteroseismic techniques combine…
Our aim is to identify brown dwarf members of the nearby Hyades open star cluster to determine the photometric and spectroscopic properties of brown dwarfs at moderately old ages and extend the knowledge of the substellar mass function of the cluster. We cross-matched the 2MASS and AllWISE public catalogues and measured proper motions to identify low-mass stars and brown dwarf candidates in an area of radius eight degrees around the central region of the Hyades cluster. We identified objects with photometry and proper motions consistent with cluster membership. For the faintest ($J$\,=\,17.2 m…
We tested the capability of a Bayesian procedure to calibrate both the helium abundance and the mixing length parameter ($α_{ML}$), using precise photometric data for main-sequence (MS) stars in a cluster with negligible reddening and well-determined distance. The method has been applied first to a mock data set generated to mimic Hyades MS stars and then to the real Hyades cluster. We tested the impact on the results of varying the number of stars in the sample, the photometric errors, and the estimated [Fe/H]. The analysis of the synthetic data set shows that $α_{ML}$ is recovered with a ver…
Open clusters exquisitely track the Galactic disc chemical properties and its time evolution; a substantial number of studies and large spectroscopic surveys focus mostly on the chemical content of relatively old clusters (age $\gtrsim$ 1 Gyr). Interestingly, the less studied young counterpart populating the solar surrounding has been found to be solar (at most), with a notable surprising lack of young metal-rich objects. While there is wide consensus about the moderately above-solar composition of the Hyades cluster, the metallicity of Praesepe is still controversial. Recent studies suggest t…
Abundances of lithium, carbon, and oxygen have been derived using spectral synthesis for a sample of 249 bright F, G, and K Northern Hemisphere dwarf stars from the high-resolution spectra acquired with the VUES spectrograph at the Moletai Astronomical Observatory of Vilnius University. The sample stars have metallicities, effective temperatures, and ages between -0.7 and 0.4 dex; 5000 and 6900 K; 1 and 12 Gyr, accordingly. We confirm a so far unexplained lithium abundance decrease at supersolar metallicities - $A$(Li) in our sample stars, which drop by 0.7 dex in the [Fe/H] range from +0.10 t…
We investigate the frequency of high carbon-to-oxygen (C/O $= 0.9$) M dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood. Using synthetic spectra, we find that such M dwarfs would have weaker TiO bands relative to hydride features. Similar weakening has already been detected in M-subdwarf (sdM) stars. By comparing to existing spectroscopic surveys of nearby stars, we show that less than one percent of nearby stars have high carbon-to-oxygen ratios. This limit does not include stars with C/O$=0.9$, [m/H]$>0.3$, and [C/Fe]$>0.1$, which we predict to have low-resolution optical spectra similar to solar metal…
We describe the time-dependent properties of a new spectroscopically confirmed Mira variable, which was discovered in 2013 as MASTER-Net Optical Transient (OT) J212444.87+321738.3 towards the Cygnus constellation. We have performed long-term optical/near-infrared (NIR) photometric and spectroscopic observations to characterize the object. From the optical/NIR light curves, we estimate a variability period of 465 $\pm$ 30 days. The wavelength-dependent amplitudes of the observed light-curves range from $Δ$I$\sim$4 mag to $Δ$K$\sim$1.5 mag. The (J-K) color-index varies from 1.78 to 2.62 mag over…
Stellar kinematic groups are kinematical coherent groups of stars which might share a common origin. These groups spread through the Galaxy over time due to tidal effects caused by Galactic rotation and disc heating. However, the chemical information survives these processes. The information provided by the analysis of chemical elements can reveal the origin of these kinematic groups. Here we investigate the origin of the stars that belong to the Ursa Major Moving Group. We present high-resolution spectroscopic observations obtained from three different spectrographs of kinematically selected FG…
We present the visual orbits of two long period spectroscopic binary stars, HD 8374 and HD 24546, using interferometric observations acquired with the CHARA Array and the Palomar Testbed Interferometer. We also obtained new radial velocities from echelle spectra using the APO 3.5 m and Fairborn 2.0 m telescopes. By combining the visual and spectroscopic observations, we solve for the full, three-dimensional orbits and determine the stellar masses and distances to within 3% uncertainty. We then estimate the effective temperature and radius of each component star through Doppler tomography and s…
Recent developments in the three-dimensional (3D) spectral synthesis code Linfor3D have meant that, for the first time, large spectral wavelength regions, such as molecular bands, can be synthesised with it in a short amount of time. A detailed spectral analysis of the synthetic G-band for several dwarf turn-off-type 3D atmospheres (5850 <= T_eff [K] <= 6550, 4.0 <= log g <= 4.5, -3.0 <= [Fe/H] <= -1.0) was conducted, under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium. We also examine carbon and oxygen molecule formation at various metallicity regimes and discuss the impact it has on the …
As a test of rotationally-induced mixing causing the well-known Li dip in older mid-F dwarfs in the local Galactic disk, we utilize high-resolution and -S/N Keck/HIRESspectroscopy to measure the Li abundance in the components of the1 Gyr, [Fe/H]=-0.15 eclipsing short-period binary V505 Per. We find A(Li)=2.7+/-0.1 and 2.4+/-0.2 in the Teff=6500 and 6450 K primary and secondary components, respectively. Previous Teff determinations and uncertainties suggest that each component is located in the midst of the Li dip. If so, their A(Li) are >=2-5 times larger than A(Li) detections and upper limits…
We present the results of a quantitative spectroscopic analysis of the oxygen-sequence Wolf- Rayet star DR1 in the low-metallicity galaxy IC 1613. Our models suggest that the strong oxygen emission lines are the result of the high temperature of this WO3 star and do not necessarily reflect a more advanced evolutionary stage than WC stars.
Until now, most members of the Ursa Major (UMa) group of stars have been identified by means of kinematic criteria. However, in many cases kinematic criteria alone are insufficient to ascertain, whether an individual star is really a member of this group. Since photometric criteria are ineffective in the case of cool dwarf members, one must use spectroscopic criteria. Nevertheless, resulting membership criteria are inconclusive. We reanalyse spectroscopic properties of cool UMa group dwarfs. In particular, we study the distribution of iron abundance, the strength of the Li I absorption at 6708…

Spectroscopic determinations of Rubidium abundances were conducted by applying the spectrum fitting method to the Rb I 7800 line for an extensive sample of ~500 late-type dwarfs as well as giants (including Hyades cluster stars) belonging to the galactic disk population, with an aim of establishing the behaviour of [Rb/Fe] ratio for disk stars in the metallicity range of -0.6<[Fe/H]<+0.3. An inspection of the resulting Rb abundances for Hyades dwarfs revealed that they show a systematic Teff-dependent trend at >5500K; this means that the results for mid-G to F stars (including the Sun) are not…
The super-Earth exoplanet 55 Cnc e, the smallest member of a five-planet system, has recently been observed to transit its host star. The radius estimates from transit observations, coupled with spectroscopic determinations of mass, provide constraints on its interior composition. The composition of exoplanetary interiors and atmospheres are particularly sensitive to elemental C/O ratio, which to first order can be estimated from the host stars. Results from a recent spectroscopic study analyzing the 6300A [O I] line and two C I lines suggest that 55 Cnc has a carbon-rich composition (C/O=1.12…

Orbital and Atmospheric Characterization of the 1RXS J034231.8+121622 System Using High-Resolution Spectroscopy Confirms That The Companion is a Low-Mass Star
Our recent re-analysis of the solar photospheric spectra with non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) models resulted in higher metal abundances compared to previous works. When applying the new chemical abundances to Standard Solar Model calculations, the new composition resolves the long-standing discrepancies with independent constraints on the solar structure from helioseismology. Critical to the determination of chemical abundances is the accuracy of the atomic data, specially the $f$-values, used in the radiative transfer models. Here we describe in detail the calculations of $f$-v…
