The process of excitation of Cherenkov electromagnetic radiation by a laser pulse in ion dielectrics is investigated. Nonlinear electric polarization in isotropic ion dielectric medium and, accordingly, polarization charges and currents induced by a ponderomotive force of a laser pulse are determined. Frequency spectra of the excited wakefields in the infrared and microwave frequency ranges are obtained. The spatiotemporal structure of the wakefield in ion dielectric waveguide is obtained and studied. It is shown that the excited field consists of a potential polarization electric field, as well as a set of eigen electromagnetic waves of ion dielectric waveguide.
Modern trends in beam-driven radiation sources involve interaction of Cherenkov wakefields with open-ended circular waveguide structures having complicated dielectric lining, with a three-layer dielectric capillary recently offered for reducing the radiation divergency being a representative example \cite{Jiang2020}. This paper presents rigorous approach allowing analytical description of electromagnetic processes occuring when the described structure is excited by single waveguide mode. In other words, corresponding canonical waveguide diffraction problem is considered in rigorous formulation…
We report observation of a strong wakefield induced energy modulation in an energy-chirped electron bunch passing through a dielectric-lined waveguide. This modulation can be effectively converted into a spatial modulation forming micro-bunches with a periodicity of 0.5 - 1 picosecond, hence capable of driving coherent THz radiation. The experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions.
A linear theory of a wakefield excitation in a plasma-dielectric accelerating structure by a drive electron bunch in the case of an off-axis bunch injection has been constructed. The structure under investigation is a round dielectric-loaded metal waveguide with a channel for the charged particles, filled with homogeneous cold plasma. Derived theory was used to investigate numerically the spatial distribution of the bunch-excited wakefield components, which act on both the drive and witness bunches.
The use of photonic structures in the terahertz (THz) spectral region may enable the essential characteristics of confinement, modal control, and electric field shielding for very high gradient accelerators based on wakefields in dielectrics. We report here an experimental investigation of THz wakefield modes in a 3D photonic woodpile structure. Selective control in exciting or suppressing of wakefield modes with non-zero transverse wave vector is demonstrated by using drive beams of varying transverse ellipticity. Additionally, we show that the wakefield spectrum is insensitive to the offset …
We report preliminary studies of a three-channel, rectangular, high gradient dielectric wakefield accelerator element, which, unlike the collinear cylindrical dielectric wakefield device, does not suffer from low transformer ratio and may offer relief from the beam breakup instability. When configured as a resonator (DWR), it can be driven by a series of modest-charge drive bunches. This rectangular 'mode-locked' resonator consists of three channels lined with low-loss dielectric slabs: the central wider channel is the drive bunch channel, whereas two adjacent narrow channels are used to accel…
Due to the tiny apertures of dielectric laser acceleration grating structures within the range of the optical wavelength, wakefields limit the bunch charge for relativistic electrons to a few femtocoulomb. In this paper, we present a wakefield upgrade of our six-dimensional tracking scheme DLAtrack6D in order to analyze these limitations. Simulations with CST Studio Suite provide the wake functions to calculate the kicks within each tracking step. Scaling laws and the dependency of the wake on geometrical changes are calculated. The tracking with wakefields is applied to beam and structure par…
Short, high charge electron bunches can drive high magnitude electric fields in dielectric lined structures. The interaction of the electron bunch with this field has several applications including high gradient dielectric wakefield acceleration (DWA) and passive beam manipulation. The simulations presented provide a prelude to the commencement of an experimental DWA programme at the CLARA accelerator at Daresbury Laboratory. The key goals of this program are: tunable generation of THz radiation, understanding of the impact of transverse wakes, and design of a dechirper for the CLARA FEL. Comp…
Besides the designed beam acceleration, the energy of electrons changed by the longitudinal wakefields in a real free-electron laser (FEL) facility, which may degrade FEL performances from the theoretical expectation. In this paper, with the help of simulation codes, the wakefields induced beam energy loss in the sophisticated undulator section is calculated for Shanghai soft X-ray FEL, which is a two-stage seeded FEL test facility. While the 1st stage 44 nm FEL output is almost not affected by the wakefields, it is found that a beam energy loss about 0.8 MeV degrades the peak brightness of th…
We present complete experimental characterisation of the temporal shape of an intense ultrashort 200-TW laser pulse driving a laser wakefield. The phase of the pulse was uniquely measured using (second order) frequency resolved optical gating (FROG). The pulses are asymmetrically compressed, and exhibit a positive chirp consistent with the expected asymmetric self-phase modulation due to photon acceleration/deceleration in a relativistic plasma wave. The measured pulse duration decreases linearly with increasing length and density of the plasma, in quantitative agreement with the intensity dep…
An electron bunch passing through dielectric-lined waveguide generates $\check{C}$erenkov radiation that can result in high-peak axial electric field suitable for acceleration of a subsequent bunch. Axial field beyond Gigavolt-per-meter are attainable in structures with sub-mm sizes depending on the achievement of suitable electron bunch parameters. A promising configuration consists of using planar dielectric structure driven by flat electron bunches. In this paper we present a three-dimensional analysis of wakefields produced by flat beams in planar dielectric structures thereby extending th…
Temporally-modulated electron beams have a wide array of applications ranging from the generation of coherently-enhanced electromagnetic radiation to the resonant excitation of electromagnetic wakefields in advanced-accelerator concepts. Likewise producing low-energy ultrashort microbunches could be useful for ultra-fast electron diffraction and new accelerator-based light-source concepts. In this Letter we propose and experimentally demonstrate a passive microbunching technique capable of forming a picosecond bunch train at $\sim 6$~MeV. The method relies on the excitation of electromagnetic …
Advanced acceleration methods based on wakefields generated by high energy electron bunches passing through dielectric-based structures have demonstrated $>$GV/m fields, paving the first steps on a path to applications such as future compact linear colliders. For a collider scenario, it is desirable that, in contrast to plasmas, wakefields in dielectrics do not behave differently for positron and electron bunches. In this Letter, we present measurements of large amplitude fields excited by positron bunches with collider-relevant parameters (energy 20 GeV, and $0.7 \times 10^{10}$ particles per…
Dielectric loaded structures are promising candidates for use in the structure wakefield acceleration (SWFA) technique, for both the collinear wakefield and the two-beam acceleration (CWA and TBA respectively) approaches, due to their low fabrication cost, low rf losses, and the potential to withstand high gradient. A short pulse (<=20 ns) TBA program is under development at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) facility where dielectric loaded structures are being used for both the power extractor/transfer structure (PETS) and the accelerator. In this study, an X-band 11.7 GHz dielectric PE…
Possibility of increase of transformer ratio TR in the case of the profiled sequence of bunches at their injection in a two-beam electron-positron dielectric-resonator collider is considered. Unlike considered earlier the waveguide case, for which TR is equal to the doubled number of bunches of sequence which provide a contribution to the total wakefield, and which is limited by the effect of the group velocity, in a resonator this limitation is absent. For deri-vation in the case of resonator of TR, proportional to the number of bunches, as well as in the waveguide, the ratio of bunch charges…
Terahertz frequency wakefields can be excited by ultra-short relativistic electron bunches travelling through dielectric lined waveguide (DLW) structures. These wakefields can either accelerate a witness bunch with high gradient, or modulate the energy of the driving bunch. In this paper, we study a passive dechirper based on the DLW to compensate the correlated energy spread of the bunches accelerated by the laser plasma wakefield accelerator (LWFA). A rectangular waveguide structure was employed taking advantage of its continuously tunable gap during operation. The assumed 200 MeV driving bu…
The paper presents the results of numerical PIC-simulation of positron bunch focusing when acceleration in a plasma dielectric wakefield accelerator. The wakefield was excited by drive electron bunch in quartz dielectric tube, embedded in cylindrical metal waveguide. The internal area of dielectric tube has been filled with radially homogeneous plasma having in general case the vacuum channel along waveguide axis. Results of numerical PIC simulation have shown that it is possible a simultaneous acceleration and focusing of test positron bunch in the wakefield. The dependence of transport and a…
Single cycle laser pulse propagating inside a plasma causes controllable asymmetric plasma electron expulsion from laser according to laser carrier envelope phase (CEP) and forms an oscillating plasma bubble. Bubble's transverse wakefield is modified, exhibiting periodic modulation. Injection scheme for a laser wakefield accelerator combining a single cycle low frequency laser pulse and a many cycle high frequency laser pulse is proposed. The co-propagating laser pulses form a transversely oscillating wakefield which efficiently traps and accelerates electrons from background plasma. By tuning…
Laser wakefield acceleration offers the promise of a compact electron accelerator for generating a multi-GeV electron beam using the huge field gradient induced by an intense laser pulse, compared to conventional rf accelerators. However, the energy and quality of the electron beam from the laser wakefield accelerator have been limited by the power of the driving laser pulses and interaction properties in the target medium. Recent progress in laser technology has resulted in the realization of a petawatt (PW) femtosecond laser, which offers new capabilities for research on laser wakefield acce…
The excitation of wakefields by a triangular temporal profile laser pulse with an abrupt fall in a step density profile plasma channel is investigated analytically and an exact solution is obtained. The excitation is more efficient for t~tp, where t is the rise time of the pulse and tp is the plasma period, though it is still significant for t~20 tp. The wake potential in the former case is 1.7 times the ponderomotive potential, whereas it falls to 1.4 times the ponderomotive potential for the latter.
We demonstrate experimentally the resonant excitation of plasma waves by trains of laser pulses. We also take an important first step to achieving an energy recovery plasma accelerator by showing that unused wakefield energy can be removed by an out-of-resonance trailing laser pulse. The measured laser wakefields are found to be in excellent agreement with analytical and numerical models of wakefield excitation in the linear regime. Our results indicate a promising direction for achieving highly controlled, GeV-scale laser-plasma accelerators operating at multi-kilohertz repetition rates. This…
We investigate the extension of self-injecting laser wakefield experiments to the regime that will be accessible with the next generation of petawatt class ultra-short pulse laser systems. Using linear scalings, current experimental trends and numerical simulations we determine the optimal laser and target parameters, i.e. focusing geometry, plasma density and target length, that are required to increase the electron beam energy (to > 1 GeV) without the use of external guiding structures.
Profiling and variation of laser pulse parameters as a way to preserve the stability of self-injected bunches during excitation of a wakefield in plasma
The electric field in laser-driven plasma wakefield acceleration is orders of magnitude higher than conventional radio-frequency cavities, but the energy gain is limited by dephasing between the ultra-relativistic electron bunch and the wakefield, which travels at the laser group velocity. We present a way to overcome this limit within a single plasma stage. The amplitude of the wakefield behind a train of laser pulses can be controlled in-flight by modulating the density profile. This creates a succession of resonant laser-plasma accelerator sections and non-resonant drift sections, within wh…
In a laser plasma accelerator (LPA), a short and intense laser pulse propagating in a plasma drives a wakefield (a plasma wave with a relativistic phase velocity) that can sustain extremely large electric fields, enabling compact accelerating structures. Potential LPA applications include compact radiation sources and high energy linear colliders. We propose and study plasma wave excitation by an incoherent combination of a large number of low energy laser pulses (i.e., without constraining the pulse phases). We show that, in spite of the incoherent nature of electromagnetic fields within the …
We measure the emission of energetic electrons from the interaction between ultrashort laser pulses and a solid density plasma in the relativistic regime. We detect an electron beam that only appears with few-cycle pulses (< 10 fs) and large plasma scale lengths ($L > λ_0$). Numerical simulations, in agreement with the experiments, reveal that these electrons are accelerated by a laser wakefield. Plasma waves are indeed resonantly excited by the few-cycle laser pulses in the near-critical-density region of the plasma. Electrons are then injected by ionization into the plasma waves and accelera…
We study the energetics of wake excitation during the laser-plasma interaction in application to laser wakefield accelerators. We find that both the wake amplitude and the accelerating efficiency (transformer ratio) can be maximized by properly shaping the longitudinal profile of the driving laser pulse. The corresponding family of laser pulse shapes is derived in the nonlinear regime of laser-plasma interaction. Such shapes provide theoretical upper limit on the magnitude of the wakefield and efficiency by allowing for uniform photon deceleration inside the laser pulse. We also construct real…

We propose to use a frequency doubled pulse colliding with the driving pulse at an acute angle to trigger ionization injection in a laser wakefield accelerator. This scheme effectively reduces the duration that injection occurs, thus high injection quality is obtained. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that electron beams with energy of ~500 MeV, charge of ~40 pC, energy spread of ~1% and normalized emittance of a few millimeter milliradian can be produced by ~100 TW laser pulses. By adjusting the angle between the two pulses, the intensity of the trigger pulse and the gas do…
A new method for the generation of a train of pulses from a single high-energy, ultra short pulse is presented, suited for Resonant Multi-Pulse Ionization injection. The method is based on different transverse portion of the pulse being delayed by a "mask" sectioned in concentric zones with different thicknesses, in order to deliver multiple laser pulses. The mask is placed right before the last focusing parabola. A hole in the middle of the mask lets part of the original pulse to pass through to drive electron injection. In this paper a full numerical modelling of this scheme is presented. In…
We report on an experimental demonstration of laser wakefield electron acceleration using a sub-TW power laser by tightly focusing 30-fs laser pulses with only 8 mJ pulse energy on a 100 μm scale gas target. The experiments are carried out at an unprecedented 0.5 kHz repetition rate, allowing "real time" optimization of accelerator parameters. Well-collimated and stable electron beams with a quasi-monoenergetic peak in excess of 100 keV are measured. Particle-in-cell simulations show excellent agreement with the experimental results and suggest an acceleration mechanism based on electron trapp…
A laser pulse traveling through a plasma can excite large amplitude plasma waves that can be used to accelerate relativistic electron beams in a very short distance---a technique called laser wakefield acceleration. Many wakefield acceleration experiments rely on the process of wavebreaking, or self-injection, to inject electrons into the wave, while other injection techniques rely on operation without self-injection. We present an experimental study into the parameters, including the pulse energy, focal spot quality and pulse power, that determine whether or not a wakefield accelerator will s…
The process of wake fields excitation by a relativistic electron bunch in ion dielectric media is considered. The space-time structure of the excited wakefield in an ion dielectric waveguide is investigated. It is shown that the wake field in the infrared (terahertz) ranges consists of the field of longitudinal polaritons and Cherenkov radiation, which is a set of electromagnetic eigen waves (transverse polaritons) of a dielectric waveguide. A branch of surface polaritons appears in a dielectric waveguide with an axial vacuum channel. The process of wakefield excitation of surface polaritons b…
A new injection scheme using the interference of two coaxial laser pulses is proposed for generating high quality beams in laser wakefield accelerators. In this scheme, a relatively loosely focused laser pulse drives the plasma wakefield, and a tightly focused laser pulse with similar intensity triggers interference ring pattern which creates onion-like multi sheaths in the plasma wakefield. Due to the wavefront curvature change after the focal position of the tightly focused laser, the innermost sheath of the wakefield expands, which slows down the effective phase velocity of the wakefield an…
The recent experimental data of anomalous magnetic moments strongly indicate the existence of new physics beyond the standard model. An energetic $μ^+$ beam is a potential option to the expected neutrino factories, the future muon colliders and the $μ$SR(the spin rotation, resonance and relaxation) technology. It is proposed a prompt acceleration scheme of the $μ^+$ beam in a donut wakefield driven by a shaped Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) laser pulse. The forward part of the donut wakefield can accelerate and also focus positive particle beams effectively. The LG laser is shaped by a near-critical-d…
The role of laser frequency chirps in the laser wakefield accelerator is examined. We show that in the linear regime, the evolution of the laser pulse length is affected by the frequency chirp, and that positive (negative) chirp compresses (stretches) the laser pulse, thereby increasing (decreasing) the peak vector potential and wakefield amplitude. In the blowout regime, the frequency chirp can be used to fine tune the localized etching rates at the front of the laser. In our simulations, chirped laser pulses can lead to 15% higher self-trapped electrons, and 10% higher peak energies as compa…
A laser pulse guided in a curved plasma channel can excite wakefields that steer electrons along an arched trajectory. As the electrons are accelerated along the curved channel, they emit synchrotron radiation. We present simple analytical models and simulations examining laser pulse guiding, wakefield generation, electron steering, and synchrotron emission in curved plasma channels. For experimentally realizable parameters, a ~2 GeV electron emits 0.1 photons per cm with an average photon energy of multiple keV.
Besides the original seeded undulator line, in the Soft X-ray free-electron laser (SXFEL) user facility at Shanghai, a second undulator line based on self-amplified spontaneous emission is proposed to achieve 2 nm laser pulse with extremely high brightness. In this paper, the beam energy deviation induced by the undulator wakefields is numerically obtained, and it is verified to have a good agreement between 3D and 2D simulation results. The beam energy loss along the undulator degrades the expected FEL output performance. Impact of wakefields on pulse energy, radiation power and spectrum is d…
An ultra-short (about 30 fs) petawatt laser pulse focused with a wide focal spot (about 100 microns) in a rarefied plasma (electron density of order 10^{17} per cm^3) excites a nonlinear plasma wakefield which can accelerate injected electrons up to the GeV energy without any pulse channelling. In these conditions, propagation of the laser pulse with an over-critical power for relativistic self-focusing is almost the same as in vacuum. The nonlinear quasi-plane wake plasma wave, whose amplitude and phase velocity vary along the laser path, effectively traps and accelerates injected electrons w…
Driving laser wakefield acceleration with extremely short, near single-cycle laser pulses is crucial to the realisation of an electron source that can operate at kHz-repetition rate while relying on modest laser energy. It is also interesting from a fundamental point of view, as the ponderomotive approximation is no longer valid for such short pulses. Through particle-in-cell simulations, we show how the plasma response becomes asymmetric in the plane of laser polarization, and dependent on the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the laser pulse. For the case of self-injection, this in turn strong…
The research is aimed to address issues of analysis and mitigation of high repetition rate effects in Dielectric Wakefield Accelerators, and more specifically, to study charging rate and charge distribution in a thin walled dielectric wakefield accelerator from a passing charge bunch and the physics of conductivity and discharge phenomena in dielectric materials useful for such accelerator applications. The issue is the role played by the beam halo and intense wakefields in charging of the dielectric, possibly leading to undesired deflection of charge bunches and degradation of the dielectric …
Laser-driven plasma accelerators can generate accelerating gradients three orders of magnitude larger than radio-frequency accelerators and have achieved beam energies above 1 GeV in centimetre long stages. However, the pulse repetition rate and wall-plug efficiency of plasma accelerators is limited by the driving laser to less than approximately 1 Hz and 0.1% respectively. Here we investigate the prospects for exciting the plasma wave with trains of low-energy laser pulses rather than a single high-energy pulse. Resonantly exciting the wakefield in this way would enable the use of different t…
A brightness of a betatron radiation generated by laser wakefield accelerated electrons can be increased by utilizing the laser driver with shorter duration at the same energy. Such shortening is possible by pulse compression after its nonlinear self-phase modulation in thin plate. However, this method can lead to a rather complex femtosecond-scale time structure of the pulse. In this work, the results of numerical simulations show that the presence of a pedestal or prepulses containing few percents or more of the main pulse energy can inhibit the acceleration process and lead to lower energie…
Dielectric laser acceleration (DLA) is one of the advanced concepts for more compact accelerators. DLA gratings have apertures and period lengths within the range of optical wavelengths. Phase stability and wakefield effects are thus crucial for upcoming experiments with relativistic electrons. For this, we present a method to analytically calculate energy spectra for comparison with measurements in order to reconstruct the phase of injection into the DLA grating structure. Knowing the injection phase is important for both alignment and interpretation of measured data. Furthermore, we estimate…
Bright and ultrashort duration X-ray pulses can be produced by through betatron oscillations of electrons during Laser Wakefield Acceleration (LWFA). Our experimental measurements using the \textsc{Hercules} laser system demonstrate a dramatic increase in X-ray flux for interaction distances beyond the depletion/dephasing lengths, where the initial electron bunch injected into the first wake bucket catches up with the laser pulse front and the laser pulse depletes. A transition from an LWFA regime to a beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) regime consequently occurs. The drive elect…
Recent initiatives in ultra-short, GeV electron beam generation have focused on achieving sub-fs pulses for driving X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) in single-spike mode. This scheme employs very low charge beams, which may allow existing FEL injectors to produce few-100 as pulses, with high brightness. Towards this end, recent experiments at SLAC have produced ~2 fs rms, low transverse emittance, 20 pC electron pulses. Here we examine use of such pulses to excite plasma wakefields exceeding 1 TV/m. We present a focusing scheme capable of producing ~200 nm beam sizes, where the surface Coulom…
A Gaussian laser pulse with a square profile in time propagating in a parabolic plasma channel, exerts a ponderomotive force on electrons that drives a large amplitude electrostatic wake potential phi. An analytic solution for phi is possible when a characteristic relation is fulfilled. For pulse duration tau ~ 9 tau_p / 4, where tau_p is the plasma period, the plasma wake potential on the axis is twice the ponderomotive potential phi_0.
We propose an RF deflector in the THz regime to measure the bunch length of the ultrashort electron beam in GeV scale by using the dielectric-lined circular waveguide (DLW) structure. We show the design of the deflector and the possible resolution in the attosecond scale with a reasonable input pulse energy of THz. We investigate the short-range wakefield effect in the DLW to the time resolution using the analytical model based on the eigenmode calculation and show the scaling law in terms of the beam size, the bunch length. We found the ideal resolution of the deflector can reach order ${\cal…
Dynamics of self-injected electron bunches has been numerically simulated in blowout regime at self-consistent change of electron bunch acceleration by plasma wakefield, excited by a laser pulse, to additional their acceleration by wakefield, excited by self-injected bunch. Advantages of acceleration by pulse train and bunch self-cleaning have been considered.
We report results on all-optical Thomson scattering intercepting the acceleration process in a laser wakefield accelerator. We show that the pulse collision position can be detected using transverse shadowgraphy which also facilitates alignment. As the electron beam energy is evolving inside the accelerator, the emitted spectrum changes with the scattering position. Such a configuration could be employed as accelerator diagnostic as well as reliable setup to generate x-rays with tunable energy.
We present the first demonstration of multi-GeV laser wakefield acceleration in a fully optically formed plasma waveguide, with an acceleration gradient as high as 25 GeV/m. The guide was formed via self-waveguiding of <15 J, 45 fs (<~300 TW) pulses over 20 cm in a low density hydrogen gas jet, with accelerated electron bunches simultaneously driven up to 5 GeV in a milliradian divergence quasi-monoenergetic peak of relative energy width ~15% and charge of at least ~10 picocoulombs. Energy gain is inversely correlated with on-axis waveguide density in the range N_e0=(1.3-3.2)x10^17 cm^(-3). We…
