We propose an RF deflector in the THz regime to measure the bunch length of the ultrashort electron beam in GeV scale by using the dielectric-lined circular waveguide (DLW) structure. We show the design of the deflector and the possible resolution in the attosecond scale with a reasonable input pulse energy of THz. We investigate the short-range wakefield effect in the DLW to the time resolution using the analytical model based on the eigenmode calculation and show the scaling law in terms of the beam size, the bunch length. We found the ideal resolution of the deflector can reach order ${\cal O}(100)~[{\rm as}]$ with pulse energy of several ${\rm mJ}$ with a negligible wakefield effect. Example calculations are given for a structure with the vacuum hole radius of $0.5,\ 0.4,\ 0.3~[{\rm mm}]$, the dielectric constant of $3.75$, the operating frequency of $0.2,\ 0.4,\ 0.6~[{\rm THz}]$, respectively.
We describe a simple technique to passively bunch non-ultrarelativistics ($\lesssim 10$~MeV) electron bunches produced in conventional photoinjectors. The scheme employs a dielectric-lined waveguide located downstream of the electron source to impress an energy modulation on a picosecond bunch. The energy modulation is then converted into a density modulation via ballistic bunching. The method is shown to support the generation of sub-picosecond bunch train with multi-kA peak currents. The relatively simple technique is expected to find applications in compact, accelerator-based, light sources…
Terahertz frequency wakefields can be excited by ultra-short relativistic electron bunches travelling through dielectric lined waveguide (DLW) structures. These wakefields can either accelerate a witness bunch with high gradient, or modulate the energy of the driving bunch. In this paper, we study a passive dechirper based on the DLW to compensate the correlated energy spread of the bunches accelerated by the laser plasma wakefield accelerator (LWFA). A rectangular waveguide structure was employed taking advantage of its continuously tunable gap during operation. The assumed 200 MeV driving bu…
Temporally-modulated electron beams have a wide array of applications ranging from the generation of coherently-enhanced electromagnetic radiation to the resonant excitation of electromagnetic wakefields in advanced-accelerator concepts. Likewise producing low-energy ultrashort microbunches could be useful for ultra-fast electron diffraction and new accelerator-based light-source concepts. In this Letter we propose and experimentally demonstrate a passive microbunching technique capable of forming a picosecond bunch train at $\sim 6$~MeV. The method relies on the excitation of electromagnetic …
Longitudinal phase space manipulation is a critical and necessary component for advanced acceleration concepts, radiation sources and improving performances of X-ray free electron lasers. Here we present a simple and versatile method to semi-arbitrarily shape the longitudinal phase space of a charged bunch by using wakefields generated in tailored dielectric-lined waveguides. We apply the concept in simulation and provide examples for radiation generation and bunch compression. We finally discuss the manufacturing capabilities of a modern 3D printer and investigate how printing limitations, as…
A rigorous approach for solving canonical circular open-ended dielectric-lined waveguide diffraction problems is presented. This is continuation of our recent paper [1] where a simpler case of uniform dielectric filling has been considered. Here we deal with the case of an open-ended circular waveguide with layered dielectric filling which is closer to potential applications. The presented method uses the solution of corresponding Wiener-Hopf-Fock equation and leads to an infinite linear system for reflection coefficients (S-parameters) of the waveguide, the latter can be efficiently solved nu…
In modern high-gain free-electron lasers, ultra-fast photon pulses designed for studying chemical, atomic and biological systems are generated from a serial of behaviors of high-brightness electron beam at the time-scale ranging from several hundred femtoseconds to sub-femtosecond. Currently, radiofrequency transverse deflectors are widely used to provide reliable, single-shot electron beam phase space diagnostics, with a temporal resolution of femtosecond. Here, we show that the time resolution limitations caused by the intrinsic beam size in transverse deflectors, can be compensated with spe…
Terahertz-driven dielectric-lined waveguides (DLWs) have uses in electron manipulation; in particular deflection, acceleration, and focussing. A rectangular DLW has been optimised for deflection of 100 keV electrons using a THz pulse with a centre frequency 0.5 THz. Electron-THz interaction and the effect of electron bunch injection timing on maximising deflection is presented. DLWs and corrugated waveguides are compared to discuss relative advantages and disadvantages.
Using recently available GaN FETs, a 600 Volt three-stage, multi-FET switch has been developed having 2 nanosecond rise time driving a 200 Ohm load with the potential of approaching 30 MHz average switching rates. Possible applications include driving particle beam choppers kicking bunch-by-bunch and beam deflectors where the rise time needs to be custom tailored. This paper reports on the engineering issues addressed, the design approach taken and some performance results of this switch.
An electron bunch passing through dielectric-lined waveguide generates $\check{C}$erenkov radiation that can result in high-peak axial electric field suitable for acceleration of a subsequent bunch. Axial field beyond Gigavolt-per-meter are attainable in structures with sub-mm sizes depending on the achievement of suitable electron bunch parameters. A promising configuration consists of using planar dielectric structure driven by flat electron bunches. In this paper we present a three-dimensional analysis of wakefields produced by flat beams in planar dielectric structures thereby extending th…
We outline a plan for final muon ionization cooling with quadrupole doublets focusing onto short absorbers followed by emittance exchange in vacuum to achieve the small transverse beam sizes needed by a muon collider. A flat muon beam with a series of quadrupole doublet half cells appears to provide the strong focusing required for final cooling. Each quadrupole doublet has a low beta region occupied by a dense, low Z absorber. After final cooling, normalized xyz emittances of (0.071, 0.141, 2.4) mm-rad are exchanged into (0.025, 0.025, 70) mm-rad. Thin electrostatic septa efficiently slice th…
We report observation of a strong wakefield induced energy modulation in an energy-chirped electron bunch passing through a dielectric-lined waveguide. This modulation can be effectively converted into a spatial modulation forming micro-bunches with a periodicity of 0.5 - 1 picosecond, hence capable of driving coherent THz radiation. The experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions.
Dielectric lined waveguides are under extensive study as accelerating structures that can be excited by electron beams. Rectangular dielectric structures are used both in proof of principle experiments for new accelerating schemes and for studying the electronic properties of the structure loading material. Analysis of Cherenkov radiation generated by high current relativistic electron bunch passing through a rectangular waveguide with transversal isotropic dielectric loading has been carried out. Some of the materials used for the waveguide loading of accelerating structures (sapphire, cerami…

Narrow-band THz coherent Cherenkov radiation can be driven by a subpicosecond electron bunch traveling along the axis of a hollow cylindrical dielectric-lined waveguide. We present a scheme of compact THz radiation source based on the photocathode rf gun. On the basis of our analytic result, the subpicosecond electron bunch with high charge (800pC) can be generated directly in the photocathode rf gun. A narrow emission spectrum peaked at 0.24 THz with 2 megawatt (MW) peak power is expected to gain in the proposed scheme (the length of the facility is about 1.2 m), according to the analytical a…
With electron beam durations down to femtoseconds and sub-femtoseconds achievable in current state-of-the-art accelerators, longitudinal bunch length diagnostics with resolution at the attosecond level are required. In this paper, we present such a novel measurement device which combines a high power laser modulator with an RF deflecting cavity in the orthogonal direction. While the laser applies a strong correlated angular modulation to a beam, the RF deflector ensures the full resolution of this streaking effect across the bunch hence recovering the temporal beam profile with sub-femtosecond…
We report preliminary studies of a three-channel, rectangular, high gradient dielectric wakefield accelerator element, which, unlike the collinear cylindrical dielectric wakefield device, does not suffer from low transformer ratio and may offer relief from the beam breakup instability. When configured as a resonator (DWR), it can be driven by a series of modest-charge drive bunches. This rectangular 'mode-locked' resonator consists of three channels lined with low-loss dielectric slabs: the central wider channel is the drive bunch channel, whereas two adjacent narrow channels are used to accel…
Recently, a new method for calculating the Cherenkov field acting on a point-like electron bunch passing through longitudinally homogeneous structures lined with arbitrary slowdown layers was proposed, where the formalism was obtained though consideration of a general integral relation that allows calculation of the fields at the vicinity of a point-like bunch. It demonstrates that the Cherenkov field at the point of the short relativistic bunch does not depend on the waveguide system material and is a constant for any given transverse dimensions and cross-section shapes of waveguides. With th…
An elegant and convenient rigorous approach for solving circular open-ended dielectric-loaded waveguide diffraction problems is presented. It uses the solution of corresponding Wiener-Hopf-Fock equation and leads to an infinite linear system for reflection coefficients (S-parameters) of the waveguide, the latter can be efficiently solved numerically using the reducing technique. As a specific example directly applicable to beam-driven radiation sources based on dielectric-lined capillaries, diffraction of a slow TM symmetrical mode at the open end of a circular waveguide with uniform dielectri…
Dielectric structures driven by laser-generated terahertz (THz) pulses may hold the key to overcoming the technological limitations of conventional particle accelerators and with recent experimental demonstrations of acceleration, compression and streaking of low-energy (sub-100 keV) electron beams, operation at relativistic beam energies is now essential to realize the full potential of THz-driven structures. We present the first THz-driven linear acceleration of relativistic 35 MeV electron bunches, exploiting the collinear excitation of a dielectric-lined waveguide driven by the longitudina…
Recently the new method of the Cherenkov fields and loss factors of a point-like electron bunch passing through longitudinally homogeneous structures lined with arbitrary slowdown layers was proposed. It was shown that the Cherenkov loss factor of the short bunch does not depend on the waveguide system material and is a constant for any given transverse dimensions and cross-section shapes of the waveguides. It was shown that with the proposed approach one can use a relatively simple method for the calculation of the total loss factor using an integral relation based on the cylindrical slowdown…
The PIP-II project is a program to upgrade the Fermilab accelerator complex. The PIP-II linac includes a 2.1 MeV Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) section that incorporates a unique chopping system to perform arbitrary, bunch-by-bunch removal of 162.5 MHz structured beam. The MEBT chopping system will consist of two identical kickers working together and a beam absorber. One design of two having been proposed has been a 200 Ohm characteristic impedance traveling wave dual-helix kicker driven with custom designed high-speed switches. This paper reports on the first performance results of one …
We propose and demonstrate a novel scheme to produce ultrashort and ultrastable MeV electron beam. In this scheme, the electron beam produced in a photocathode radio-frequency (rf) gun first expands under its own Coulomb force with which a positive energy chirp is imprinted in the beam longitudinal phase space. The beam is then sent through a double bend achromat with positive longitudinal dispersion where electrons at the bunch tail with lower energies follow shorter paths and thus catch up with the bunch head, leading to longitudinal bunch compression. We show that with optimized parameter s…
