The process of wake fields excitation by a relativistic electron bunch in ion dielectric media is considered. The space-time structure of the excited wakefield in an ion dielectric waveguide is investigated. It is shown that the wake field in the infrared (terahertz) ranges consists of the field of longitudinal polaritons and Cherenkov radiation, which is a set of electromagnetic eigen waves (transverse polaritons) of a dielectric waveguide. A branch of surface polaritons appears in a dielectric waveguide with an axial vacuum channel. The process of wakefield excitation of surface polaritons by a relativistic electron bunch is also considered.
If inter-bunch wake fields are flat, i.e. their variations over a bunch length can be neglected, all coherent modes have the same coupled-bunch structure, provided the bunches can be treated as identical by their inner qualities (train theorem). If a flat feedback is strong enough, the transverse modes are single-bunch, provided the inter-bunch wakes are also flat (damper theorem).
The coupled-bunch beam breakup problem excited by the resistive wall wake is formulated. An approximate analytic method of finding the asymptotic behavior of the transverse bunch displacement is developed and solved.
One dimensional nonlinear plasma wake-fields excited by a single bunch and by series of bunches are considered. Essential differences are brought to light between negatively charged bunch case and positively one. The bunches with nonuniform distributions of density are investigated. The obtained results show dependence of excited potential electric fields on bunches parameters and allows to choose these parameters optimal.
Transverse mode coupling instability of a single bunch caused by oscillating wake field is considered in the paper. The instability threshold is found at different frequencies of the wake with space charge tune shift taken into account. The wake phase advance in the bunch length from 0 up to $4π$ is investigated. It is shown that the space charge can push the instability threshold up or down dependent on the phase advance. Transition region is investigated thoroughly, and simple asymptotic formulas for the threshold are represented.
In previous work [1] general expressions, valid for arbitrary bunch lengths, were derived for the wakefields of corrugated structures with flat geometry, such as is used in the RadiaBeam/LCLS dechirper. However, the bunch at the end of linac-based X-ray FELs--like the LCLS--is extremely short, and for short bunches the wakes can be considerably simplified. In this work, we first derive analytical approximations to the short-range wakes. These are generalized wakes, in the sense that their validity is not limited to a small neighborhood of the symmetry axis, but rather extends to arbitrary tran…
We measure the effects of transverse wakefields driven by a relativistic proton bunch in plasma with densities of $2.1\times10^{14}$ and \unit[$7.7\times10^{14}$]{electrons/cm$^3$}. We show that these wakefields periodically defocus the proton bunch itself, consistently with the development of the seeded self-modulation process. We show that the defocusing increases both along the bunch and along the plasma by using time resolved and time-integrated measurements of the proton bunch transverse distribution. We evaluate the transverse wakefield amplitudes and show that they exceed their seed val…
A linear theory of a wakefield excitation in a plasma-dielectric accelerating structure by a drive electron bunch in the case of an off-axis bunch injection has been constructed. The structure under investigation is a round dielectric-loaded metal waveguide with a channel for the charged particles, filled with homogeneous cold plasma. Derived theory was used to investigate numerically the spatial distribution of the bunch-excited wakefield components, which act on both the drive and witness bunches.
When a resistive feedback and single-bunch wake act together, it is known that some head-tail modes may become unstable even without space charge. This feedback-wake instability, FWI, modified by space charge to a certain degree, is shown to have a special single-maximum increasing- dropping pattern with respect to the gain. Also, at sufficiently large Coulomb and wake fields, as well as the feedback gain, a new type of transverse mode-coupling instability is shown to take place, 3FMCI, when head-to-tail amplified positive modes couple and the growth rate saturates with the gain.
The expressions for wake fields, generated in plasma (in the plasma waveguide or unlimited plasma) by relativistic electron bunch, was received and analyzed for the cases of the presence and absence of strong external longitudinal magnetic field. For the both cases the comparative analysis of the dependence of field amplitudes on the parameters of the electron bunch was done.
Recent simulation shows that a self-modulated high energy proton bunch can excite a large amplitude plasma wakefield and accelerate an externally injected electron bunch to the energy frontier in a single stage acceleration through a long plasma channel. Based on this scheme, future colliders, either an electron-positron linear collider (e+-e- collider) or an electron-hadron collider (e-p collider) can be conceived. In this paper, we discuss some key design issues for an e+-e- collider and a high energy e-p collider, based on the existing infrastructure of the CERN accelerator complex.
In the laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) a short intense laser pulse, with a duration of the order of a plasma wave period, excites an unusually strong plasma wake wave (laser wakefield). Recent experiments on laser wakefield acceleration [Nature (London) 431, p.535, p.538, p.541 (2004)] demonstrated generation of ultra-short (with a duration of a few femtoseconds) relativistic electron bunches with relatively low energy spread of the order of a few percent. We have studied the dynamics of such bunches in vacuum and in laser wakefield. The results show strong bunch dynamics already on a few m…
The possibility of charged particle acceleration by a longitudinal wake field excited in plasma by an electron bunch and a train of electron bunches. The exact solution of the stationary nonlinear self-consistent interaction of a monoenergetic relativistic bunch with cold plasma is obtained. It is shown that under certain conditions a self-acceleration of the bunch tail electrons up to high energies is possible.
The spatio-temporal structure of the bulk wakefields excited by a relativistic electron bunch in plasma of semiconductors and semimetals is studied. It is shown that these wakefield consists of the field of longitudinal plasmons and Cherenkov electromagnetic radiation, which is a set of eigen electromagnetic waves of the semiconductor or semimetal waveguide. A branch of the surface plasmons appears in a waveguide with an axial vacuum channel. The process of wake excitation of the surface plasmons by the relativistic electron bunch is also investigated. The intensity of the excited wake surface…
A scheme of laser wakefield acceleration, when a relatively rare and long bunch of non-relativistic or weakly-relativistic electrons is initially in front of the laser pulse, is suggested and considered. The motion of test electrons is studied both in the one-dimensional case (1D wakefield) and in the three-dimensional laser wakefield excited in a plasma channel. It is shown that the bunch is trapped, effectively compressed both in longitudinal and transverse directions and accelerated to ultra-relativistic energies in the region of first accelerating maximum of the wakefield. The accelerated …
The plasma wakefield amplitudes which could be achieved via the modulation of a long proton bunch are investigated. We find that in the limit of long bunches compared to the plasma wavelength, the strength of the accelerating fields is directly proportional to the number of particles in the drive bunch and inversely proportional to the square of the transverse bunch size. The scaling laws were tested and verified in detailed simulations using parameters of existing proton accelerators, and large electric fields were achieved, reaching 1 GV/m for LHC bunches. Energy gains for test electrons bey…
In recent experiments ultra-relativistic femtosecond electron bunches were generated by a Laser Wakefield Accelerator (LWFA) in different regimes. Here we predict that even attosecond bunches can be generated by an LWFA due to the fast betatron phase mixing within a femtosecond electron bunch. The attosecond bunches are stable outside the LWFA and can propagate in vacuum many tens of centimeter without significant change in their duration. Our calculations show that evidence for the formation of attosecond bunches can be found in the spectrum of coherent betatron radiation from LWFA's.
We have directly measured THz wakefields induced by a subpicosecond, intense relativistic electron bunch in a diamond loaded accelerating structure via the wakefield acceleration method. We present here the beam test results from the first diamond based structure. Diamond has been chosen for its high breakdown threshold and unique thermoconductive properties. Fields produced by a leading (drive) beam were used to accelerate a trailing (witness) electron bunch which followed the drive bunch at a variable distance. The energy gain of a witness bunch as a function of its separation from the drive…
Earlier, the authors found a mechanism for the sequence of short relativistic electron bunches, which leads to resonant excitation of the wakefield, even if the repetition frequency of bunches differs from the plasma frequency. In this case, the synchronization of frequencies is restored due to defocusing of the bunches which get into the bad phases with respect to the plasma wave. However, in this case, the bunches are lost, which as a result of this do not participate in the excitation of the wakefield. In this paper, numerical simulation was used to study the dynamics of electron bunches an…
We develop analytical models of the longitudinal and transverse wakes, on and off axis for realistic structures, and then compare them with numerical calculations, and generally find good agreement. These analytical "first order" formulas approximate the droop at the origin of the longitudinal wake and of the slope of the transverse wakes; they represent an improvement in accuracy over earlier, "zeroth order" formulas. In example calculations for the RadiaBeam/LCLS dechirper using typical parameters, we find a 16\% droop in the energy chirp at the bunch tail compared to simpler calculations. W…
Using 2d3v code LCODE, the numerical simulation of nonlinear wakefield excitation in plasma by shaped relativistic electron bunch with charge distribution, which increases according to Gaussian charge distribution up to the maximum value, and then decreases sharply to zero, has been performed. Transformer ratio, as the ratio of the maximum accelerating field to the maximum decelerating field inside the bunch, and accelerating the wakefield have been investigated taking into account nonlinearity of the wakefield. The dependence of the transformer ratio and the maximum accelerating field on the …
A higher harmonic cavity (HHC), used to cause bunch lengthening for an increase in the Touschek lifetime, is a feature of several fourth generation synchrotron light sources. The desired bunch lengthening is complicated by the presence of required gaps in the bunch train. In a recent paper the author and Venturini studied the effect of various fill patterns by calculating the charge densities in the equilibrium state, through coupled Haïssinski equations. We assumed that the only collective force was from the beam loading (wake field) of the harmonic cavity in its lowest mode. The present pape…
Femtosecond bunch is a hot topic in the present world accelerator research community. The high peak current bunch will lead to the beam breakup phenomenon. In this paper, the scaling law with current for the single ultrashort bunch beam breakup in the radio frequency linear accelerator is proposed and obtained. The scaling power factor is roughly estimated to be 1/6, 1/6 and 1/3 for the geometry wake, the surface roughness wake and the resistance wake respectively.
The transverse instability of a bunch in a circular accelerator is elaborated in this paper. A new tree-modes model is proposed and developed to describe the most unstable modes of the bunch. This simple and flexible model includes chromaticity and space charge, and can be used with any bunch and wake forms. The dispersion equation for the bunch eigentunes is obtained in form of a third-order algebraic equation. The known head-tail and TMCI modes appear as the limiting cases which are distinctly bounded at zero chromaticity only. It is shown that the instability parameters depend only slightly…
For the purpose of laser wakefield acceleration, it turned out that also the injection of electron bunches longer than a plasma wavelength can generate accelerated femtosecond bunches with relatively low energy spread. This is of high interest because such injecting bunches can be provided, e.g., by state-of-the-art photo cathode RF guns. Here we point out that when an e-bunch is injected in the wakefield it is important to take into account the ponderomotive scattering of the injecting bunch by the laser pulse in the vacuum region located in front of the plasma. At low energies of the injecte…
Possibility of increase of transformer ratio TR in the case of the profiled sequence of bunches at their injection in a two-beam electron-positron dielectric-resonator collider is considered. Unlike considered earlier the waveguide case, for which TR is equal to the doubled number of bunches of sequence which provide a contribution to the total wakefield, and which is limited by the effect of the group velocity, in a resonator this limitation is absent. For deri-vation in the case of resonator of TR, proportional to the number of bunches, as well as in the waveguide, the ratio of bunch charges…
Terahertz frequency wakefields can be excited by ultra-short relativistic electron bunches travelling through dielectric lined waveguide (DLW) structures. These wakefields can either accelerate a witness bunch with high gradient, or modulate the energy of the driving bunch. In this paper, we study a passive dechirper based on the DLW to compensate the correlated energy spread of the bunches accelerated by the laser plasma wakefield accelerator (LWFA). A rectangular waveguide structure was employed taking advantage of its continuously tunable gap during operation. The assumed 200 MeV driving bu…
In the past, calculation of wakefields generated by an electron bunch propagating in a plasma has been carried out in linear approximation, where the plasma perturbation can be assumed small and plasma equations of motion linearized. This approximation breaks down in the blowout regime where a high-density electron driver expels plasma electrons from its path and creates a cavity void of electrons in its wake. In this paper, we develop a technique that allows to calculate short-range longitudinal and transverse wakes generated by a witness bunch being accelerated inside the cavity. Our results…
A numerical investigation on the spatiotemporal evolution of an electron beam, externally injected in a plasma in the presence of a plasma wake field, is carried out. The latter is driven by an ultra-short relativistic axially-symmetric femtosecond electron bunch. We first derive a novel Poisson-like equation for the wake potential where the driving term is the ultra-short bunch density, taking suitably into account the interplay between the sharpness and high energy of the bunch. Then, we show that a channel is formed longitudinally, through the externally injected beam while experiencing the…
Due to their ultra-short duration and peak currents in the kA range, laser-wakefield accelerated electron bunches are promising drivers for ultrafast X-ray generation in compact free-electron-lasers (FELs), Thomson-scattering or betatron sources. Here we present the first single-shot, high-resolution measurements of the longitudinal bunch profile obtained without prior assumptions about the bunch shape. Our method allows complex features, such as multi-bunch structures, to be detected. Varying the length of the gas target, and thus the acceleration length, enables an assessment of the bunch pr…
Using a periodic electron beam bunch train to resonantly excite plasma wakefields in the quasi-nonlinear (QNL) regime has distinct advantages over employing a single, higher charge bunch. Resonant excitation in the QNL regime can produce plasma electron blowout using very low emittance beams with a small charge per pulse: the local density perturbation is extremely nonlinear, achieving total rarefaction, yet the resonant response of the plasma electrons at the plasma frequency is preserved. Such a pulse train, with inter-bunch spacing equal to the plasma period, can be produced via inverse fre…
Beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerators typically use the external injection scheme to ensure controllable beam quality at injection. However, the externally injected witness bunch may exhibit a non-Gaussian transverse density distribution. Using particle-in-cell simulations, we show that the common beam quality factors, such as the normalized RMS emittance and beam radius, do not strongly depend on the initial transverse shapes of the witness beam. Nonetheless, a beam with a highly-peaked transverse spatial profile can achieve a higher fraction of the total beam charge in the core. The same…
Transverse mode coupling instability of a bunch with space charge and wake field is considered within the frameworks of the boxcar model. Eigenfunctions of the bunch without wake are used as a basis for the solution of the equations with the wake field included. A dispersion equation for constant wake is presented in the form of an infinite continued fraction and also as the recursive relation with an arbitrary number of the basis functions. Realistic wake fields are considered as well including resistive wall, square, and oscillating wakes. It is shown that the TMCI threshold of the negative …
A plasma flow behind a relativistic electron bunch propagating through a cold plasma is found assuming that the transverse and longitudinal dimensions of the bunch are small and the bunch can be treated as a point charge. In addition, the bunch charge is assumed small. A simplified system of equations for the plasma electrons is derived and it is shown that, through a simple rescaling of variables, the bunch charge can be eliminated from the equations. These equations have a unique solution, with an ion cavity formed behind the driver. The equations are solved numerically and the scaling of th…
By means of hollow plasma, multiple proton bunches work well in driving nonlinear plasma wakefields and accelerate electrons to energy frontier with preserved beam quality. However, the acceleration of positrons is different because the accelerating structure is strongly charge dependent. There is a discrepancy between keeping a small normalized emittance and a small energy spread. This results from the conflict that the plasma electrons used to provide focusing to the multiple proton bunches dilute the positron bunch. By loading an extra electron bunch to repel the plasma electrons and meanwh…
In the Phase 2 of the AWAKE first experimental run (from May to November 2018), an electron beam was used to probe and test proton-driven wakefield acceleration in a rubidium plasma column. In this work, we analyze the overall charge capture and shot-to-shot reproducibility of the proton-driven plasma wakefield accelerator with various electron bunch injection parameters. The witness electron bunches were produced using an RF-gun equipped with a Cs2Te photocathode illuminated by a tailorable ultrafast deep ultraviolet (UV) laser pulse. The construction of the UV beam optical system enabled app…
We report preliminary studies of a three-channel, rectangular, high gradient dielectric wakefield accelerator element, which, unlike the collinear cylindrical dielectric wakefield device, does not suffer from low transformer ratio and may offer relief from the beam breakup instability. When configured as a resonator (DWR), it can be driven by a series of modest-charge drive bunches. This rectangular 'mode-locked' resonator consists of three channels lined with low-loss dielectric slabs: the central wider channel is the drive bunch channel, whereas two adjacent narrow channels are used to accel…
A long, narrow, relativistic charged particle bunch propagating in plasma is subject to the self-modulation (SM) instability. We show that SM of a proton bunch can be seeded by the wakefields driven by a preceding electron bunch. SM timing reproducibility and control are at the level of a small fraction of the modulation period. With this seeding method, we independently control the amplitude of the seed wakefields with the charge of the electron bunch and the growth rate of SM with the charge of the proton bunch. Seeding leads to larger growth of the wakefields than in the instability case.
Transverse mode coupling instability of a bunch with space charge and wake field is considered in frameworks of the boxcar model. Eigenfunctions of the bunch without wake are used as the basis for solution of the equations with the wake field included. Dispersion equation for the bunch eigentunes is obtained in the form of an infinite continued fraction. It is shown that influence of space charge on the instability essentially depends on the wake sign. In particular, threshold of the negative wake increases in absolute value until the space charge tune shift is rather small, and goes to zero a…
It is shown that the requirements for high quality electron bunch generation and trapping from an underdense photocathode in plasma wakefield accelerators can be substantially relaxed through localizing it on a plasma density downramp. This depresses the phase velocity of the accelerating electric field until the generated electrons are in phase, allowing for trapping in shallow trapping potentials. As a consequence the underdense photocathode technique is applicable by a much larger number of accelerator facilities. Furthermore, dark current generation is effectively suppressed.
Temporally-modulated electron beams have a wide array of applications ranging from the generation of coherently-enhanced electromagnetic radiation to the resonant excitation of electromagnetic wakefields in advanced-accelerator concepts. Likewise producing low-energy ultrashort microbunches could be useful for ultra-fast electron diffraction and new accelerator-based light-source concepts. In this Letter we propose and experimentally demonstrate a passive microbunching technique capable of forming a picosecond bunch train at $\sim 6$~MeV. The method relies on the excitation of electromagnetic …
Plasma wakefield acceleration, either laser driven or electron-bunch driven, has been demonstrated to hold great potential. However, it is not obvious how to scale these approaches to bring particles up to the TeV regime. In this paper, we discuss the possibility of proton-bunch driven plasma wakefield acceleration, and show that high energy electron beams could potentially be produced in a single accelerating stage.
Particle acceleration in a quasilinear plasma wake provides access to high acceleration gradients while avoiding self-trapping of the background electrons. However, the plasma response to the externally injected witness bunch leads to a variation of the focussing fields along the bunch length, which can lead to a emittance growth. In order to investigate the impact of this emittance growth on the overall beam quality, we develop a single figure of merit based on a potential high-energy application for the AWAKE experiment at CERN. We show that the development of such a figure of merit naturall…
The AWAKE experiment relies on the self-modulation instability of a long proton bunch to effectively drive wakefields and accelerate an electron bunch to GeV-level energies. During the first experimental run (2016-2018) the instability was made phase reproducible by means of a seeding process: a short laser pulse co-propagates within the proton bunch in a rubidium vapor. Thus, the fast creation of plasma and the onset of beam-plasma interaction within the bunch drives seed wakefields. However, this seeding method leaves the front of the bunch not modulated. The bunch front could self-modulate …
We suggest a novel method for injection of electrons into the acceleration phase of particle accelerators, producing low emittance beams appropriate even for the demanding high energy Linear Collider specifications. In this paper we work out the injection into the acceleration phase of the wake field in a plasma behind a high intensity laser pulse, taking advantage of the laser polarization and focusing. With the aid of catastrophe theory we categorize the injection dynamics. The scheme uses the structurally stable regime of transverse wake wave breaking, when electron trajectory self-intersec…
The paper presents the results of numerical PIC-simulation of positron bunch focusing when acceleration in a plasma dielectric wakefield accelerator. The wakefield was excited by drive electron bunch in quartz dielectric tube, embedded in cylindrical metal waveguide. The internal area of dielectric tube has been filled with radially homogeneous plasma having in general case the vacuum channel along waveguide axis. Results of numerical PIC simulation have shown that it is possible a simultaneous acceleration and focusing of test positron bunch in the wakefield. The dependence of transport and a…
Dynamics of self-injected electron bunches has been numerically simulated in blowout regime at self-consistent change of electron bunch acceleration by plasma wakefield, excited by a laser pulse, to additional their acceleration by wakefield, excited by self-injected bunch. Advantages of acceleration by pulse train and bunch self-cleaning have been considered.
We briefly compare in numerical simulations the relativistic ionization front and electron bunch seeding of the self-modulation of a relativistic proton bunch in plasma. When parameters are such that initial wakefields are equal with the two seeding methods, the evolution of the maximum longitudinal wakefields along the plasma are similar. We also propose a possible seeding/injection scheme using a single plasma that we will study in upcoming simulations works.
Transverse mode-coupling instability (TMCI) is known to limit bunch intensity. Since space charge (SC) changes coherent spectra, it affects the TMCI threshold. Generally, there are only two types of TMCI with respect to SC: the vanishing type and the strong space charge (SSC) type. For the former, the threshold value of the wake tune shift is asymptotically proportional to the SC tune shift, as it was first observed twenty years ago by M. Blaskiewicz for exponential wakes. For the latter, the threshold value of the wake tune shift is asymptotically inversely proportional to the SC, as it was s…
We discuss the level of natural shot noise in a proton bunch-driven plasma accelerator. The required seeding for the plasma wake field must be larger than the cumulative shot noise. This is the necessary condition for the axial symmetry of the generated wake and the acceleration quality. We develop an analytical theory of the noise field and compare it with multi-dimensional simulations. It appears that the natural noise wake field generated in plasma by the available at CERN super-protons-synchrotron (SPS) bunches is very low, at the level of a few 10 kV/m. This fortunate fact eases the requi…
Seeded self-modulation in a plasma can transform a long proton beam into a train of micro-bunches that can excite a strong wakefield over long distances, but this needs the plasma to have a certain density profile with a short-scale ramp up. For the parameters of the AWAKE experiment at CERN, we numerically study which density profiles are optimal if the self-modulation is seeded by a short electron bunch. With the optimal profiles, it is possible to "freeze" the wakefield at approximately half the wavebreaking level. High-energy electron bunches (160 MeV) are less efficient seeds than low-ene…
We report observation of a strong wakefield induced energy modulation in an energy-chirped electron bunch passing through a dielectric-lined waveguide. This modulation can be effectively converted into a spatial modulation forming micro-bunches with a periodicity of 0.5 - 1 picosecond, hence capable of driving coherent THz radiation. The experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions.
We use beam position measurements over the first part of the AWAKE electron beamline, together with beamline modeling, to deduce the beam average momentum and to predict the beam position in the second part of the beamline. Results show that using only the first five beam position monitors leads to much larger differences between predicted and measured positions at the last two monitors than when using the first eight beam position monitors. These last two positions can in principle be used with ballistic calculations to predict the parameters of closest approach of the electron bunch with the…
