Data available in the literature of lattice parameter changes in Ni, Cu and MgO single crystals irradiated in neutron reactors are tentatively reproduced using ad hoc ion irradiation experiments. The nature and energy of the ions were selected so that their weighted average recoil spectrum matches at best that of the neutron flux inside the reactor. The ion fluence was calculated to obtain similar, average displacements per atom (dpa) levels. The lattice parameters of the irradiated samples were determined using X-ray diffraction. We show that, for the metals, it is not possible to reproduce the neutron data, essentially because the dpa levels are low and the irradiated, damaged volume is small. On the contrary, for MgO, a very close lattice parameter change is obtained, providing that the irradiation temperature is significantly increased (1000 K) with respect to that in the reactor (300 K).
We experimentally discovered that Al2O3 and MgO exhibit well-pronounced nanometric modifications on the surfaces when irradiated under grazing incidence with 23 MeV I beam, in contrast to normal incidence irradiation with the same ion beam when no damage was found. Moreover, ions in these two materials produce notably different structures: grooves surrounded with nanohillocks on MgO surfaces vs. smoother, roll-like discontinuous structures on the surfaces of Al2O3. To explain these results, detailed numerical simulations were performed. We identified that a presence of the surface inhibits rec…
Ta/CoFeB/MgO trilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are often characterised by vanishing or modest values of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which results in purely Bloch or mixed Bloch-Néel domain walls (DWs). Here we investigate the creep evolution of the overall magnetic bubble morphology in these systems under the combined presence of in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields and we show that He$^+$ ion irradiation induces a transition of the internal DW structure towards a fully Néel spin texture. This transition can be correlated to a simultaneous increase …
Thin films of Fe3O4 have been deposited on single crystal MgO (100) and Si (100) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. Films grown on MgO substrate are epitaxial with c-axis orientation whereas, films on Si substrate are highly <111> oriented. Film thicknesses are 150 nm. These films have been irradiated with 200 MeV Ag ions. We study the effect of the irradiation on structural and electrical transport properties of these films. The fluence value of irradiation has been varied in the range of 5 x 1010 ions/cm2 to1 x 1012 ions/cm2. We compare the irradiation induced modifications on various…
Defects creation and annihilation is a fundamental concept in device fabrication. This report studies the optical bandgap modification in MgO by MeV Ni ion irradiation-induced defect states between valance and conduction band. Ion implantation on MgO single crystal produces substitutional defect states along with F (anionic vacancy center), $F_2$, other oxygen vacancy center and V (cationic vacancy center) centers confirmed from absorption and photoluminescence spectra that can be applied as filament in valance charge memory based resistive random access memories. The variation of optical band…
The high energy density of electronic excitations due to the impact of swift heavy ions can induce structural modifications in materials. We present a X-ray diffractometer called ALIX, which has been set up at the low-energy IRRSUD beamline of the GANIL facility, to allow the study of structural modification kinetics as a function of the ion fluence. The X-ray setup has been modified and optimized to enable irradiation by swift heavy ions simultaneously to X-ray pattern recording. We present the capability of ALIX to perform simultaneous irradiation - diffraction by using energy discrimination…
The existing mathematical expressions, used to evaluate the number of atoms displaced by particle irradiation of materials, are not applicable to 2D structures like graphene. In a previous work (J. Radioanal. Nucl.Chem, 2011, 289,1, 167- 172) a model was developed for performing such evaluations in the case of graphene irradiated with heavy ions and with light charged particles. In the present paper we report the generalization of the model to the graphene irradiated with neutrons in the energy range 0- 2 MeV.
We have investigated the variation in the magnetization of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) after neutron irradiation, which introduces defects in the bulk sample and consequently gives rise to a large magnetic signal. We observe strong paramagnetism in HOPG, increasing with the neutron fluence. We correlate the induced paramagnetism with structural defects by comparison with density-functional theory calculations. In addition to the in-plane vacancies, the trans-planar defects also contribute to the magnetization. The lack of any magnetic order between the local moments is possibly du…
A cluster deposition method was used to produce films of loosely aggregated nanoclusters (NC) of Fe core-Fe3O4 shell or fully oxidized Fe3O4. Films of these NC on Si(100) or MgO(100)/Fe3O4(100) were irradiated to 10^16 Si2+/cm2 near room temperature using an ion accelerator. Ion irradiation creates structural change in the NC film with corresponding chemical and magnetic changes which depend on the initial oxidation state of the cluster. Films were characterized using magnetometry (hysteresis, first order reversal curves), microscopy (transmission electron, helium ion), and x-ray diffraction. …
Materials subjected to neutron irradiation will suffer from a build-up of damage caused by the displacement cascades initiated by nuclear reactions. Previously, the main "measure" of this damage accumulation has been through the displacements per atom (dpa) index. There are known limitations associated with the dpa quantity and its domain of application and therefore this paper describes a more rigorous methodology to calculate the primary atomic recoil events (often called the primary knock-on atoms or PKAs) that lead to cascade damage events as a function of energy and recoiling species for …
Radiation-enhanced precipitation of Cr-rich α' in irradiated Fe-Cr alloys, which results in hardening and embrittlement, depends on the irradiating particle and the displacement per atom (dpa) rate. Here, we utilize a Cahn-Hilliard phase-field based approach, that includes simple models for nucleation, irradiating particle and rate dependent radiation-enhanced diffusion and cascade mixing to simulate α' evolution under neutrons, heavy ions, and electron irradiations. Different irradiating particles manifest very different cascade mixing efficiencies. The model was calibrated using neutron data…
Local compositions and structures of Zn_{1-x}Mg_{x}O alloys have been investigated by Raman and solid-state {67}Zn/{25}Mg nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, and by neutron pair-distribution-function (PDF) analyses. The E2(low) and E2(high) Raman modes of Zn_{1-x}Mg_{x}O display Gaussian- and Lorentzian-type profiles, respectively. At higher Mg substitutions, both modes become broader, while their peak positions shift in opposite directions. The evolution of Raman spectra from Zn_{1-x}Mg_{x}O solid solutions are discussed in terms of lattice deformation associated with the distinc…
The economical lifetime of the divertor is a key concern for realizing nuclear fusion reactors that may solve the world's energy problem. A main risk is thermo-mechanical failure of the plasma-facing tungsten monoblocks, as a consequence of irradiation hardening induced by neutron displacement cascades. Lifetime extensions that could be carried out without prolonged maintenance periods are desired. In this work, the effects of potential treatments for extending the lifetime of an operational reactor are explored. The proposed treatments make use of cyclic recrystallization processes that can o…
Structural as well as magnetization studies have been carried out on graphite samples irradiated by neutrons over 50 years in the CIRUS research reactor at Trombay. Neutron diffraction studies reveal that the defects in irradiated graphite samples are not well annealed and remain significant up to high temperatures much greater than 653 K where the Wigner energy is completely released. We infer that the remnant defects may be intralayer Frenkel defects, which do not store large energy, unlike the interlayer Frenkel defects that store the Wigner energy. Magnetization studies on the irradiated g…
Irradiation of TiBe12 and CrBe12 with He+ ions and ex-situ transmission electron microscopy to investigate ion damage as a proxy for neutron irradiation damage in nuclear fusion
We created dense ensembles of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) centers in diamond by neutron and electron irradiation for applications in hybrid quantum systems and magnetometry. We characterize fluorescence intensity, optical and coherence properties of the resulting defects by confocal microscopy, UV/Vis and FTIR spectroscopy, optically detected magnetic resonance and small angle X-ray scattering. We find the highest densities of NV- at neutron fluences on the order of 10^17 cm^-2 and electron doses of 10^18 cm^-2, with spin resonance linewidths of 6 MHz. Lower electron energies inc…
The impact of 400 keV $Ar^+$ ion irradiation on the magnetic and electrical properties of in-plane magnetized magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) stacks was investigated by ferromagnetic resonance, vibrating sample magnetometry and current-in-plane tunneling techniques. The irradiation-induced changes of the magnetic anisotropy, coupling energies and tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) exhibited a correlated dependence on the ion fluence, which allowed us to distinguish between two irradiation regimes. In the low-fluence regime, $Φ < 10^{14} cm^{-2}$, the parameters required for having a functioning MTJ…
A novel concept for detection and spectroscopy of gamma rays, and detection of thermal neutrons based on codoped lanthanum fluoride nanocrystals containing gadolinium is presented. The trends of colloidal synthesis of the mentioned material, LaF3 co-doped with Ce as the activator, Yb as the wavelength-shifter and Gd as the neutron captor, is reported. Nanocrystals of the mentioned material were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), optical absorption, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Gamma detection and i…
We studied the influence of the disorder introduced in polycrystalline MgB2 samples by neutron irradiation. To circumvent self shielding effects due to the strong interaction between thermal neutrons and 10B we employed isotopically enriched 11B which contains 40 times less 10B than natural B. The comparison of electrical and structural properties of different series of samples irradiated in different neutron sources, also using Cd shields, allowed us to conclude that, despite the low 10B content, the main damage mechanisms are caused by thermal neutrons, whereas fast neutrons play a minor rol…
Whether αdouble prime-Fe16N2 possesses a giant saturation magnetization (Ms) has been a daunting problem among magnetic researchers for almost 40 years, mainly due to the unshakable faith of famous Slater-Pauling (SP) curve and poor consistency on evaluating its Ms. Here we demonstrate that, using epitaxy and mis-fit strain imposed by an underlying substrate, the in-plane lattice constant of Fe16N2 thin films can be fine tuned to create favorable conditions for exceptionally large saturation magnetization. Combined study using polarized neutron reflectometry and X-ray diffraction shows that wi…
Using the notion of eigenstrain produced by the defects formed in a material exposed to high energy neutron irradiation, we develop a method for computing macroscopic elastic stress and strain arising in components of a fusion power plant during operation. In a microstructurally isotropic material, the primary cause of macroscopic elastic stress and strain fields is the spatial variation of neutron exposure. We show that under traction-free boundary conditions, the volume-average elastic stress always vanishes, signifying the formation of a spatially heterogeneous stress state, combining compr…
This work extends our Object Kinetic Monte Carlo model for neutron irradiation-induced nanostructure evolution in Fe-C alloys to consider higher irradiation temperatures. The previous study concentrated on irradiation temperatures < 370 K. Here we study the evolution of vacancy and self-interstitial atom (SIA) cluster populations at the operational temperature of light water reactors, by simulating specific reference irradiation experiments. Following our previous study, the effect of carbon on radiation defect evolution can be described in terms of formation of immobile complexes with vacanci…
Neutron irradiation induces in steels nanostructural changes, which are at the origin of the mechanical degradation that these materials experience during operation in nuclear power plants. Some of these effects can be studied by using as model alloy the iron-carbon system. The Object Kinetic Monte Carlo technique has proven capable of simulating in a realistic and quantitatively reliable way a whole irradiation process. We have developed a model for simulating Fe-C systems using a physical description of the properties of vacancy and self-interstitial atom (SIA) clusters, based on a selection…

The origin of the "red" emission bands in the 600 nm-700 nm region, observed in quartz crystals used for luminescence dating and environmental dosimetry, is still controversial. Their reported spectral and lifetime characteristics are often similar to those of oxygen dangling bonds ("non-bridging oxygen hole centers, NBOHCs") in glassy silicon dioxide. The presence of these "surface radical type" centers in quartz crystal requires sites with highly disordered local structure forming nano-voids characteristic to the structure of glassy SiO2. Such sites are introduced in the tracks of nuclear pa…
The need to populate the fusion materials engineering data base has long been recognized, the IFMIF facility being the present proposed neutron source for this purpose. Re-evaluation of the regulatory approach for the EU proposed DEMO device shows that the specification of the neutron source can be reduced with respect to IFMIF, allowing lower risk technology solutions to be considered. The justification for this approach is presented and a description of a proposed facility, FAFNIR, is presented with more detailed discussion of the accelerator and target designs.
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is an attractive van der Waals material for studying fluorescent defects due to its large bandgap. In this work, we demonstrate enhanced pink color due to neutron irradiation and perform electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements. The new point defects are tentatively assigned to doubly- occupied nitrogen vacancies with (S = 1) and a zero-field splitting (D = 1.2 GHz). These defects are associated with a broad visible optical absorption band and near infrared photoluminescence band centered at ~ 490 nm and 820 nm, respectively. The EPR signal intensities …
The effects of neutron irradiation on normal state and superconducting properties of epitaxial magnesium diboride thin films are studied up to fluences of 1020 cm-2. All the properties of the films change systematically upon irradiation. Critical temperature is suppressed and, at the highest fluence, no superconducting transition is observed down to 1.8 K. Residual resistivity progressively increases from 1 to 190 microohmcm; c axis expands and then saturates at the highest damage level. We discuss the mechanism of damage through the comparison with other damage procedures. The normal state ma…
Unlike the vast amount of irradiated material data that exists for stainless steel internals from LWRs, with high fast neutron flux and an irradiation temperature of~330oC, the CANDU reactor is unique with a high thermal spectrum stainless steel components peripheral to the core. In particular, the CANDU design contains an austenitic stainless steel calandria vessel, which contains the heavy water moderator at a temperature of 60-80oC. This article explores the effects of low (60-80oC) and moderate (300-360oC) irradiation temperature on irradiation induced defects and defect sinks, both in ter…
In this paper, we investigate plasticity in irradiated FeCrAl nanopillars using discrete dislocation dynamics simulations (DDD), with comparisons to transmission electron microscopic (TEM) in situ tensile tests of ion and neutron irradiated commercial FeCrAl alloy C35M. The effects of irradiation-induced defects, such as a/2 111 and a 100 type loops and composition fluctuations representative of phase separation in irradiated FeCrAl alloys, are investigated separately as well as superposed together in simulations. We explore the effects of defects on the stress-strain behavior, specifically yi…
Ion implantation is widely used as a surrogate for neutron irradiation in the investigation of radiation damage on the properties of materials. Due to the small depth of damage, micromechanical methods must be used to extract material properties. In this work, nanoindentation has been applied to ion irradiated silicon carbide to extract radiation-induced hardening. Residual stress is evaluated using HR-EBSD, AFM swelling measurements, and a novel microcantilever relaxation technique coupled with finite element modelling. Large compressive residual stresses of several GPa are found in the irrad…
Predictions of material activation inventories will be a key input to virtually all aspects of the operation, safety and environmental assessment of future fusion nuclear plants. Additionally, the neutron-induced transmutation (change) of material composition (inventory) with time, and the creation and evolution of configurational damage from atomic displacements, require precise quantification because they can lead to significant changes in material properties, and thus influence reactor-component lifetime. A comprehensive scoping study has been performed to quantify the activation, transmuta…
Irradiation-induced lattice defects in silicon carbide (SiC) have already exceeded their previous reputation as purely performance-inhibiting. With their remarkable quantum properties, such as long room-temperature spin coherence and the possibility of downscaling to single-photon source level, they have proven to be promising candidates for a multitude of quantum information applications. One of the most crucial parameters of any quantum system is how long its quantum coherence can be preserved. By using the pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) technique, we investigate the spi…
Predicting volume swelling of structural materials in nuclear reactors under high-dose neutron irradiations based on existing low-dose experiments or irradiation data with high-dose-rate energetic particles has been a long-standing challenge for safety evaluation and rapidly screening irradiation-resistant materials in nuclear energy systems. Here, we build an Additional Defect Absorption Model that describes the irradiation-induced swelling effects produced by energetic electrons, heavy-ions, and neutrons by considering additional defect sinks inherent in the irradiation process. Based on thi…

Ion irradiation provides a promising substitute to neutron tests for investigating the effects of radiation on materials for fission and fusion reactor plants. Here we show proton irradiation can quantitatively reproduce precipitation that leads to embrittlement in reactor pressure vessel steels, at dose rates 10,000 times greater than experienced in fission reactor operation. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is used to characterize precipitate size distributions in copper-containing steels irradiated to average doses of approx. 7 mdpa with 5 MeV protons. Comparing our results with the li…

UZr based metallic nuclear fuel is the leading candidate for next-generation sodium-cooled fast reactors in the United States. US research reactors have been using and testing this fuel type since the 1960s and accumulated considerable experience and knowledge about the fuel performance. However, most of knowledge remains empirical. The lack of mechanistic understanding of fuel performance is preventing the qualification of UZr fuel for commercial use. This paper proposes a data-driven approach, coupled with advanced post irradiation examination, powered by machine learning algorithms, to faci…
A deep neural network was developed for the purpose of predicting thermal conductivity with a case study performed on neutron irradiated nuclear fuel. Traditional thermal conductivity modeling approaches rely on existing theoretical frameworks that describe known, relevant phenomena that govern the microstructural evolution processes during neutron irradiation (such as recrystallization, and pore size, distribution and morphology). Current empirical modeling approaches, however, do not represent all irradiation test data well. Here, we develop a machine learning approach to thermal conductivit…
Mechanism of solute-enriched clusters formation in neutron-irradiated pressure vessel steels is proposed and developed in case of Fe-Cu model alloys. We show that the obtained results are in a good agreement with available experimental data on the parameters of clusters enriched with the alloying elements. The suggested solute-drag mechanism is analogous to the well-known zone-refining process. Our model explains why the formation of solute-enriched clusters does not happen in austenitic stainless steels with fcc lattice structure. It also allows to quantify the method of evaluation of neutron…
