This paper is devoted to the inverse problem of recovering simultaneously a potential and a point source in a Shrödinger equation from the associated nonlinear Dirichlet to Neumann map. The uniqueness of the inversion is proved and logarithmic stability estimates are derived. It is well known that the inverse problem of determining only the potential while knowing the source, is ill-posed. In contrast the problem of identifying a point source when the potential is given is well posed. The obtained results show that the nonlinear Dirichlet to Neumann map contains enough information to determine simultaneously the potential and the point source. However recovering a point source imbedded in an unknown background medium becomes an ill-posed inversion.
The paper is concerned with an inverse point source problem for the Helmholtz equation. It consists of recovering the locations and amplitudes of a finite number of radiative point sources inside a given inhomogeneous medium from the knowledge of a single boundary measurement. The main result of the paper is a new Hölder type stability estimate for the inversion under the assumption that the point sources are well separated. The proof of the stability is based on a combination of Carleman estimates and a technique for proving uniqueness of the Cauchy problem.
This paper is devoted to the problem of recovering a potential $q$ in a domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$ for $d \geq 3$ from the Dirichlet to Neumann map. This problem is related to the inverse Calderón conductivity problem via the Liouville transformation. It is known from the work of Haberman and Tataru [11] and Nachman and Lavine [17] that uniqueness holds for the class of conductivities of one derivative and the class of $W^{2,d/2}$ conductivities respectively. The proof of Haberman and Tataru is based on the construction of complex geometrical optics (CGO) solutions initially suggested by Sylvest…
The paper study a possibility to recover a parabolic diffusion from its time-average when the values at the initial time are unknown. This problem can be reformulated as a new boundary value problem where a Cauchy condition is replaced by a prescribed time-average of the solution. It is shown that this new problem is well-posed in certain classes of solutions. The paper establishes existence, uniqueness, and a regularity of the solution for this new problem and its modifications, including problems with singled out terminal values.
In this paper, we consider the inverse problem of recovering a sound soft scatterer from the measured scattered field. The scattered field is assumed to be induced by a point source on a curve/surface that is known. Here we will propose and analyze new direct sampling methods for this problem. The first method we consider uses a far-field transformation of the near-field data which will allow us to derive explicit bounds in the resolution analysis for the direct sampling method's imaging functional. Two direct sampling methods will be studied using the far-field transformation. For these imagi…
In this work, we present some new Carleman inequalities for Stokes and Oseen equations with non-homogeneous boundary conditions. These estimates lead to log type stability inequalities for the problem of recovering the solution of the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations from both boundary and distributed observations. These inequalities fit the well-known unique continuation result of Fabre and Lebeau [18]: the distributed observation only depends on interior measurement of the velocity, and the boundary observation only depends on the trace of the velocity and of the Cauchy stress tensor measu…
Let $A\in\mathrm{Sym}(n\times n)$ be an elliptic 2-tensor. Consider the anisotropic fractional Schrödinger operator $\mathscr{L}_A^s+q$, where $\mathscr{L}_A^s:=(-\nabla\cdot(A(x)\nabla))^s$, $s\in (0, 1)$ and $q\in L^\infty$. We are concerned with the simultaneous recovery of $q$ and possibly embedded soft or hard obstacles inside $q$ by the exterior Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map outside a bounded domain $Ω$ associated with $\mathscr{L}_A^s+q$. It is shown that a single measurement can uniquely determine the embedded obstacle, independent of the surrounding potential $q$. If multiple measure…

The paper study a possibility to recover solutions of Schrödinger equations from its time-averages in the setting where the values at the initial time are unknown. This problem can be reformulated as a new boundary value problem where a Cauchy condition is replaced by a prescribed time-average of the solution. It is shown that this new problem is well-posed in certain classes of solutions. The paper establishes existence, uniqueness, and a regularity of the solution for this new problem.
We study linear stochastic partial differential equations of parabolic type. We consider a new boundary value problem where a Cauchy condition is replaced by a prescribed average of the solution either over time and probabilistic space for forward SPDEs and over time for backward SPDEs. Well-posedness, existence, uniqueness, and a regularity of the solution for this new problem are obtained. In particular, this can be considered as a possibility to recover a solution of a forward SPDE in a setting where its values at the initial time are unknown, and where the average of the solution over time…
We consider the problem of recovering the coefficient σ(x) of the elliptic equation \grad \cdot(σ\grad u)=0 in a body from measurements of the Cauchy data on possibly very small subsets of its surface. We give a constructive proof of a uniqueness result by Kenig, Sjöstrand, and Uhlmann. We construct a uniquely specified family of solutions such that their traces on the boundary can be calculated by solving an integral equation which involves only the given partial Cauchy data. The construction entails a new family of Green's functions for the Laplacian, and corresponding single layer potential…
We consider two inverse problems related to the tokamak \textsl{Tore Supra} through the study of the magnetostatic equation for the poloidal flux. The first one deals with the Cauchy issue of recovering in a two dimensional annular domain boundary magnetic values on the inner boundary, namely the limiter, from available overdetermined data on the outer boundary. Using tools from complex analysis and properties of genereralized Hardy spaces, we establish stability and existence properties. Secondly the inverse problem of recovering the shape of the plasma is addressed thank tools of shape optim…
The problem of recovering the asymptotics of a short range perturbation of the Euclidean metric on R^n from fixed energy scattering data is studied. It is shown that if two such metrics, g1, g2, have scattering data at some fixed energy which are equal up to smoothing, then there exists a diffeomorphism ψ`fixing infinity' such that ψ^*(g1) - g2 is rapidly decreasing. Given the scattering matrix at two energies, it is shown that the asymptotics of a metric and a short range potential can be determined simultaneously. These results also hold for a wide class of scattering manifolds.
This paper is concerned with an inverse problem of recovering a potential term and fractional order in a one-dimensional subdiffusion problem, which involves a Djrbashian-Caputo fractional derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$ in time, from the lateral Cauchy data. In the model, we do not assume a full knowledge of the initial data and the source term, since they might be unavailable in some practical applications. We prove the unique recovery of the spatially-dependent potential coefficient and the order $α$ of the derivation simultaneously from the measured trace data at one end point, when the mo…
In this paper, we derive a Sampling Method to solve the inverse shape problem of recovering an inclusion with a generalized impedance condition from electrostatic Cauchy data. The generalized impedance condition is a second-order differential operator applied to the boundary of the inclusion. We assume that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann mapping is given from measuring the current on the outer boundary from an imposed voltage. A simple numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed inversion method for recovering the inclusion. We also consider the inverse impedance problem of …
In this paper, we consider inverse shape problems coming from diffuse optical tomography and inverse scattering. In both problems, our goal is to reconstruct small volume interior regions from measured data on the exterior surface of an object. In order to achieve this, we will derive an asymptotic expansion of the reciprocity gap functional associated with each problem. The reciprocity gap functional takes in the measured Cauchy data on the exterior surface of the object. In diffuse optical tomography, we prove that a MUSIC-type algorithm can be used to recover the unknown subregions. This gi…
In this paper, we consider the direct and inverse problem for time-fractional diffusion in a domain with an impenetrable subregion. Here we assume that on the boundary of the subregion the solution satisfies a generalized impedance boundary condition. This boundary condition is given by a second order spacial differential operator imposed on the boundary. A generalized impedance boundary condition can be used to model corrosion and delimitation. The well-posedness for the direct problem is established where the Laplace Transform is used to study the time dependent boundary value problem. The i…
Given a bounded domain $M$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with a conformally Euclidean metric $g=ρ\,dx^2$, in this paper we consider the inverse problem of recovering a semigeodesic neighborhood of a domain $Γ\subset \partial M$ and the conformal factor $ρ$ in the neighborhood from the travel time data (defined below) and the Cartesian coordinates of $Γ$. We develop an explicit reconstruction procedure for this problem. The key ingredient is the relation between the reconstruction and a Cauchy problem of the conformal Killing equation.
In this paper, we consider the inverse scattering problem for recovering either an isotropic or anisotropic scatterer from the measured scattered field initiated by a point source. We propose two new imaging functionals for solving the inverse problem. The first one employs a far-field transform to the data which we then use to derive and provide an explicit decay rate for the imaging functional. In order to analyze the behavior of this imaging functional we use the factorization of the near field operator as well as the Funk-Hecke integral identity. For the second imaging functional the Cauch…

In this paper we investigate the non-linear and ill-posed inverse problem of simultaneously identifying the conductivity and the reaction in diffuse optical tomography with noisy measurement data available on an accessible part of the boundary. We propose an energy functional method and the total variational regularization combining with the quadratic stabilizing term to formulate the identification problem to a PDEs constrained optimization problem. We show the stability of the proposed regularization method and the convergence of the finite element regularized solutions to the identification…
Inverse problems of recovering space-dependent parameters, e.g., initial condition, space-dependent source or potential coefficient, in a subdiffusion model from the terminal observation have been extensively studied in recent years. However, all existing studies have assumed that the terminal time at which one takes the observation is exactly known. In this work, we present uniqueness and stability results for three canonical inverse problems, e.g., backward problem, inverse source and inverse potential problems, from the terminal observation at an unknown time. The subdiffusive nature of the…
