The problem of recovering the asymptotics of a short range perturbation of the Euclidean metric on R^n from fixed energy scattering data is studied. It is shown that if two such metrics, g1, g2, have scattering data at some fixed energy which are equal up to smoothing, then there exists a diffeomorphism ψ`fixing infinity' such that ψ^*(g1) - g2 is rapidly decreasing. Given the scattering matrix at two energies, it is shown that the asymptotics of a metric and a short range potential can be determined simultaneously. These results also hold for a wide class of scattering manifolds.
The fixed energy scattering matrix is defined on a perturbed stratified medium, and for a class of perturbations, its main part is shown to be a Fourier integral operator on the sphere at infinity. This is facilitated by developing a refined limiting absorption principle. The symbol of the scattering matrix is shown to determine the asymptotics of a large class of perturbations.
We consider the electromagnetic scattering from a convex polyhedral PEC or PMC obstacle due to a time-harmonic incident plane wave. It is shown that the modulus of the far-field pattern in the backscattering aperture possesses a certain local maximum behavior. Using the local maximum indicating phenomena, one can determine the exterior unit normal directions, as well as the face areas, of the front faces of the obstacle. Then we propose a recovery scheme of reconstructing the obstacle by phaseless backscattering measurements. This work significantly extends our recent study in [12] from two di…
We construct smooth solutions to Ricci flow starting from a class of singular metrics and give asymptotics for the forward evolution. The singular metrics heal with a set of points (of codimension at least three) coming out of the singular point. We conjecture that these metrics arise as final-time limits of Ricci flow encountering a Type-I singularity modeled on $\mathbb{R}^{p+1} \times S^q$. This gives a picture of Ricci flow through a singularity, in which a neighborhood of the manifold changes topology from $D^{p+1} \times S^{q}$ to $S^p \times D^{q+1}$ (through the cone over $S^p \times S…
The problem of recovering the asymptotics of a short range perturbation of the Euclidean Laplacian on n dimensional Eudlidean space from fixed energy scattering data is studied. It is shown that for greater than or equal to three that a magnetic potential is determined, modulo Gauge invariance, by its scattering matrix at a fixed non-zero energy. This result also holds for a wide class of scattering manifolds.
We consider the inverse problem of recovering the optical properties of a highly-scattering medium from acousto-optic measurements. Using such measurements, we show that the scattering and absorption coefficients of the radiative transport equation can be reconstructed with Lipschitz stability by means of algebraic inversion formulas.
We consider the inverse problem of recovering a potential by measuring the response at a point to a source located at the same point and then varying the point on the surface of a sphere. This is a similar to the inverse back-scattering problem. We show that if the angular derivatives of the difference of two potentials having the same data is controlled by the L^2 norm of the difference of the potentials they must be equal. In particular this shows injectivity of the inverse problem for radial potentials.
We give resolvent estimates near zero energy on Riemannian scattering, i.e. asymptotically conic, spaces, and their generalizations, using a uniform microlocal Fredholm analysis framework.
We prove that the scattering matrix at all energies restricted to an open subset of the boundary determines an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold modulo isometries that are equal to the identity on the open subset where the scattering matrix is known.
We consider the scattering of time-harmonic electromagnetic waves by a penetrable thin tubular scattering object in three-dimensional free space. We establish an asymptotic representation formula for the scattered wave away from the thin tubular scatterer as the radius of its cross-section tends to zero. The shape, the relative electric permeability and the relative magnetic permittivity of the scattering object enter this asymptotic representation formula by means of the center curve of the thin tubular scatterer and two electric and magnetic polarization tensors. We give an explicit characte…
We consider the linear wave equation with the time-dependent scale-invariant damping and mass. We also treat the corresponding equation with the energy critical nonlinearity. Our aim is to show that the solution scatters to a modified linear wave solution and to obtain its asymptotic order.
We use a Lagrangian regularity perspective to discuss resolvent estimates near zero energy on Riemannian scattering, i.e. asymptotically conic, spaces, and their generalizations. In addition to the Lagrangian perspective we introduce and use a resolved pseudodifferential algebra to deal with zero energy degeneracies in a robust manner.
We review the proof of existence and uniqueness of solutions of the Maxwell-Schr"odinger system in a neighborhood of infinity in time, with prescribed asymptotic behaviour defined in terms of asymptotic data, without any restriction on the size of those data. That result is the basic step in the construction of modified wave operators for the Maxwell-Schr"odinger system.
We study certain resonance-counting functions for potential scattering on infinite cylinders or half-cylinders. Under certain conditions on the potential, we obtain asymptotics of the counting functions, with an explicit formula for the constant appearing in the leading term.
We consider the two-dimensional high-frequency plane wave scattering problem in the exterior of a finite collection of disjoint, compact, smooth, strictly convex obstacles with Neumann boundary conditions. Using integral equation formulations, we determine the Hörmander classes and derive high-frequency asymptotic expansions of the total fields corresponding to multiple scattering iterations on the boundaries of the scattering obstacles. These asymptotic expansions are used to obtain sharp wavenumber dependent estimates on the derivatives of multiple scattering total fields which, in turn, all…
We consider an inverse acoustic scattering problem in simultaneously recovering an embedded obstacle and its surrounding inhomogeneous medium by formally determined far-field data. It is shown that the knowledge of the scattering amplitude with a fixed incident direction and all observation angles along with frequencies from an open interval can be used to uniquely identify the embedded obstacle, sound-soft or sound-hard disregarding the surrounding medium. Furthermore, if the surrounding inhomogeneous medium is from an admissible class (still general), then the medium can be recovered as well…
We show how the inverse scattering transform can be used as a convenient tool to derive the long-time asymptotics of shock waves for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation in the soliton region. In particular, we improve the results previously obtained via the nonlinear steepest decent approach both with respect to the decay of the initial conditions as well as the region where they are valid.
We consider an inner problem for whispering gallery high-frequency asymptotic mode's scattering by a boundary inflection. The related boundary-value problem for a Schrödinger equation on a half-line with a potential linear in both space and time appears fundamental for describing transitions from modal to scattered asymptotic patterns, and despite having been intensively studied over several decades remains largely unsolved. We prove that the solution past the inflection point has a ``searchlight'' asymptotics corresponding to a beam concentrated near the limit ray, and establish certain decay…
Scattering is defined on compact manifolds with boundary which are equipped with an asymptotically hyperbolic metric, $g.$ A model form is established for such metrics close to the boundary. It is shown that the scattering matrix at energy $ζ$ exists and is a pseudo-differential operator of order $2ζ+1 - \dim X.$ The symbol of the scattering matrix is then used to show that except for a countable set of energies the scattering matrix at one energy determines the diffeomorphism class of the metric modulo terms vanishing to infinite order at the boundary. An analogous result is proved for potent…
In the present paper we are concerned with the Novikov--Veselov equation at negative energy, i.e. with the $ (2 + 1) $--dimensional analog of the KdV equation integrable by the method of inverse scattering for the two--dimensional Schrödinger equation at negative energy. We show that the solution of the Cauchy problem for this equation with non--singular scattering data behaves asymptotically as $ \frac{\const}{t^{3/4}} $ in the uniform norm at large times $ t $. We also present some arguments which indicate that this asymptotics is optimal.
In this paper, we give a positive answer to a challenging open problem for recovering unknown obstacle (which is usually referred to as a scatterer) by acoustic wave probe associated to the Helmholtz equation. We show that the acoustic scattering amplitude $A(β, α_0, k_0)$, known for all $β\in {\mathbb S}^2$, where ${\mathbb {S}}^2$ is the unit sphere in ${\mathbb{R}}^3$, ${α}_0\in {\mathbb{S}}^2$ is fixed, $k_0>0$ is fixed, determines the obstacle $D$ and the boundary condition on $\partial D$ uniquely (The boundary condition on $\partial D$ is either the Dirichlet, or Neumann, or the impedan…
For a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ which is isometric to the Euclidean space outside of a compact set, and whose trapped set has Liouville measure zero, we prove Weyl type asymptotics for the scattering phase with remainder depending on the classical escape rate and the maximal expansion rate. For Axiom A geodesic flows, this gives a polynomial improvement over the known remainders. We also show that the remainder can be bounded above by the number of resonances in some neighbourhoods of the real axis, and provide similar asymptotics for hyperbolic quotients using the Selberg zeta function.
We consider the massive Klein-Gordon equation on a class of asymptotically static spacetimes. We prove the existence and Hadamard property of the in and out states constructed by scattering theory methods. Assuming in addition that the metric approaches that of Minkowski space at infinity in a short-range way, jointly in time and space variables, we define Feynman scattering data and prove the Fredholm property of the Klein-Gordon operator with the associated Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary conditions. We then construct a parametrix (with compact remainder terms) for the Fredholm problem and pro…
