We report an analysis of two poorly studied systems GSC 04396-00605 and GSC 04395-00485, which were recently named as V0455 Dra and V0454 Dra, respectively. For two eclipsing stars, the periods and epochs were significantly corrected using our extensive data. The phenomenological characteristics of the mean light curves were determined using the "New Algol Variable" (NAV) algorithm. The individual times of Maxima/Minima (ToM) were determined using the newly developed software MAVKA, which outputs the accurate parameters using the "asymptotic parabola" approximations. The light curves were approximated using the Wilson-Devinney model, the best fit parameters are listed. For both systems, the presence of the dark spot is justified, the parameters are estimated. Both systems classified to be overcontact binaries of EW type. The observations were obtained using the 1-m Korean telescope of the LOAO while monitoring the cataclysmic variable DO Dra within the "Inter-Longitude Astronomy" (ILA) project.
The photometric and spectroscopic data for three double-lined detached eclipsing binaries were collected from the photometric and spectral surveys. The light and radial velocity curves of each binary system were simultaneously analyzed by using Wilson-Devinney (WD) code, and the absolute physical and orbital parameters of these binaries were derived. The masses of both components of ASASSN-V J063123.82+192341.9 were found to be $M_1 = 1.088 \pm 0.016$ and $M_2 = 0.883 \pm 0.016\ M_{\odot}$; and those of ASAS J011416+0426.4 were determined to be $M_1 = 0.934 \pm 0.046$ and $M_2 = 0.754 \pm 0.04…
In this work, we search for negative superhumps (nSHs) in poorly studied cataclysmic variables using TESS data. We find three eclipsing binaries with nSH signatures: HBHA 4204-09, Gaia DR3 5931071148325476992, and SDSS J090113.51+144704.6. The last one exhibits IW And-like behaviour in archival ZTF data, and appears to have shallow, grazing eclipses. In addition, we detect nSH signatures in two non-eclipsing systems: KQ Mon and Gaia DR3 4684361817175293440, by identifying the orbital period from the superorbital-dependent irradiation of the secondary. We discover nSH signatures in one more sys…
Detached eclipsing binaries allow stellar masses and radii to be measured with unrivalled accuracy. While inspecting light curves obtained with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), we noticed that the A0 III star $α$ Dra shows clear and well-separated primary and secondary eclipses. This star is known to be a single-lined spectroscopic binary, with a period of 51.5 d and an eccentricity of 0.43. The currently available TESS observations cover two 27-d sectors and the light curve shows a primary eclipse (depth 9%) and a secondary eclipse (depth 2%), separated in time by 38.5 days. …
Physical parameters were recently measured for several Cepheids in eclipsing binary systems in the LMC. It is a good opportunity to compare these results with models obtained from pulsation theory. Having well determined physical parameters of the stars, we can calculate the corresponding pulsation periods for a given mode and check for instability. For stars that lack data, unknown or poorly defined parameters can be further constrained. We present the comparison for six Cepheids, showing that, in general, the results are in very good agreement.
We present a comprehensive photometric study of the pulsating, eclipsing binary OO Dra. Simultaneous B- and V-band photometry of the star was carried out on 14 nights. Revised orbital period and a new ephemeris were derived from the data. The first photometric solution of the binary system and the physical parameters of the component stars are determined. It reveals that OO Dra could be a detached system with the less-massive secondary component nearly filling in its Roche lobe. By subtracting the eclipsing light changes from the data, we obtained the intrinsic pulsating light curves of the ho…
We aim to determine the absolute parameters of the components of a poorly studied Algol-type eclipsing binary V2247 Cyg. The data analysis is based on our numerous precise UBVRcIc photometric observations and low resolution spectra. The photometric solution reveals a semi-detached configuration with a less-massive component filling its Roche lobe. The mass ratio, inclination, effective temperatures, and fractional radii were determined. Masses and radii of the components were obtained by a non-direct method. The Eclipse Time Variation (ETV) diagram revealed the period changes.
We present new photometric and spectroscopic observations and analyses for the eclipsing binary systems V1241 Tau and GQ Dra. Our photometric light and radial velocity curves analyses combining with the TESS light curves show that both are conventional semi-detached binary systems. Their absolute parameters are also derived. We present the $O-C$ analyses of the systems and we propose the most possible orbital period modulating mechanisms. Furthermore, Fourier analyses are applied to the photometric residual data of the systems to check for the pulsational behavior of the components. We conclud…
We present light curve solutions of the W UMa-type eclipsing binary OGLE-GD-ECL-04451, observed by both the \emph{Optical Gravitational Lensing Ex-periment} (\emph{OGLE}) program in 2006 and the \emph{Antarctica Survey Telescope} (\emph{AST3-1}) in 2012 at Dome A. We analyzed this binary system with the Wilson-Devinney(W-D) method 2013 version and derived the mass ratio $q=2.91 \pm 0.07$, the inclination $i=76.86^\circ \pm 0.23^\circ$, and the light variattion amplitud was $0^m.51$ based on the \emph{OGLE} data. From the \emph{AST3-1}'s data, we find that the amplitude dropped to $0^m.44$(2012…
We report our investigation of 1SWASP J234401.81-212229.1, a variable with a 18461.6 s period. After identification in a 2011 search of the SuperWASP archive for main-sequence eclipsing binary candidates near the distribution's short-period limit of approx. 0.20 d, it was measured to be undergoing rapid period decrease in our earlier work, though later observations supported a cyclic variation in period length. Spectroscopic data obtained in 2012 with the Southern African Large Telescope did not, however, support the interpretation of the object as a normal eclipsing binary. Here, we consider …
The study of pulsating stars in eclipsing binaries holds the promise of combining two different ways of measuring the physical properties of a star to obtain improved constraints on stellar theory. Gravity (g) mode pulsations such as those found in $γ$ Doradus stars can be used to probe rotational profiles, mixing and magnetic fields. Until recently few $γ$ Doradus stars in eclipsing binaries were known. We have discovered g-mode pulsations in four detached eclipsing binary systems from light curves obtained by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and present an analysis of their e…
We present the first BVR photometry, period variation, and photometric light-curve analysis of two poorly studied eclipsing binaries V1321 Cyg and CR Tau. Observations were carried out from November 2017 to January 2020 at the observatory of Uzhhorod National University. Period variations were studied using all available early published as well as our minima times. We have used newly developed ELISa code for the light curve analysis and determination of photometric parameters of both systems. We found that V1321 Cyg is a close detached eclipsing system with a low photometric mass ratio of $q=0…
Altough both components of the bright eclipsing binary $α$ Dra having been resolved using long baseline interferometry and the secondary component shown to contribute some 15\% of the total flux, a spectroscopic detection of the companion star was so far unsuccessful. To achieve our goals, we use a combined data set from interferometry with the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI), photometry with the TESS space observatory, and high-resolution spectroscopy with the HERMES fibre-fed spectrograph at the La Palma observatory. We use the method of spectral disentangling to search for the …
We present models of the components of the systems KOI-126 and CM Draconis, the two eclipsing binary systems known to date to contain stars with masses low enough to have fully convective interiors. We are able to model satisfactorily the system KOI-126, finding consistent solutions for the radii and surface temperatures of all three components, using a solar-like value of the mixing-length parameter αin the convection zone, and PHOENIX NextGen 1D model atmospheres for the surface boundary conditions. Depending on the chemical composition, we estimate the age of the system to be in the range 3…
I analyzed All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) Sky Patrol data of ES Dra and classified it to be a Z Cam star with VY Scl-type fading episodes. An analysis of Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observations showed that this object shows shallow eclipses and that the orbital period is 0.17749895(17) d. Negative superhumps with a period of 0.167830(2) d and the beat phenomenon between the period of negative superhumps and the orbital period were detected in the TESS data between 2020 January and March. The orbital profile systematically varied depending on the beat phase …
The phenomenological parameters of eclipsing binary stars, which are the prototypes of the EA, EB and EW systems are determined using the expert complex of computer programs, which realizes the NAV ("New Algol Variable") algorithm (Andronov 2010, 2012) and its possible modifications are discussed, as well as constrains for estimates of some physical parameters of the systems in a case of photometric observations only, such as the degree of eclipse, ratio of the mean surface brightnesses of the components. The half-duration of the eclipse is 0.0617(7), 0.1092(18) and 0.1015(7) for Algol, $β$ Ly…
An initial investigation of two poorly studied eclipsing binaries separated by ~3' in the sky is presented. The first star (GSC 2576-01248) was discovered by the TrES exoplanet search project. The second one (GSC 2576-02071) was identified by the authors during CCD observations of GSC 2576-01248. We combine our dedicated CCD photometry with the archival TrES observations and data from the digitized photographic plates of the Moscow collection to determine periods of the two variable stars with high precision. For GSC 2576-01248, addition of historical photographic data provides a major improve…
CCD observations of 68 eclipsing binary systems, candidates for containing δ Scuti components, were obtained. Their light curves are analysed using the PERIOD04 software for possible pulsational behaviour. For the systems QY Aql, CZ Aqr, TY Cap, WY Cet, UW Cyg, HL Dra, HZ Dra, AU Lac, CL Lyn and IO UMa, complete light curves were observed due to the detection of a pulsating component. All of them, except QY Aql and IO UMa, are analysed with modern astronomical softwares in order to determine their geometrical and pulsational characteristics. Spectroscopic observations of WY Cet and UW Cyg were…
OO Dra is a short-period Algol system with a $δ$ Sct-like pulsator. We obtained time-series spectra between 2016 February and May to derive the fundamental parameters of the binary star and to study its evolutionary scenario. The radial velocity (RV) curves for both components were presented, and the effective temperature of the hotter and more massive primary was determined to be $T_{\rm eff,1}$ = 8260 $\pm$ 210 K by comparing the disentangling spectrum and the Kurucz models. Our RV measurements were solved with the $BV$ light curves of Zhang et al. (2014) using the Wilson-Devinney binary cod…
Discovery of a new binary star system (GSC 03905-01870 = USNO-B1.0 1431-0327922 = UCAC4 716-059522) in the Draco constellation is presented. It was discovered during a search for previously unreported eclipsing binary stars through the ASAS-SN database. The shape of the light curve and its characteristics (period of 0.428988$\pm$0.000001 d, amplitude of 0.34$\pm$0.02 $V$ Mag, primary minimum epoch HJD 2457994.2756$\pm$0.0002) indicates that the new variable star is an eclipsing binary of W Ursae Majoris type. I registered this variable star in The International Variable Star Index (VSX), its A…
This paper presents CCD observations of the Algol-type eclipsing binaries RZ Dra and EG Cep. The light curves have been analyzed with the PHOEBE software and Wilson-Devinney code (2003 version). A detailed photometric analysis, based on these observations, is presented for both binarity and pulsation. The results indicate semidetached systems where the secondary component fills its Roche lobe. After the subtraction of the theoretical light curve, a frequency analysis was performed in order to check for pulsations of the primary component of each system. Moreover, a period analysis was performe…
New CCD photometric observations of BX Dra were obtained for 26 nights from 2009 April to 2010 June. The long-term photometric behaviors of the system are presented from detailed studies of the period and light variations, based on the historical data and our new observations. All available light curves display total eclipses at secondary minima and inverse O'Connell effects with Max I fainter than Max II, which are satisfactorily modeled by adding the slightly time-varying hot spot on the primary star. A total of 87 times of minimum light spanning over about 74 yrs, including our 22 timing me…
Context. TW Draconis is one of the best studied Algol-type eclipsing binaries. There is significant evidence for miscellaneous physical processes between interacting binary components manifesting themselves by period and light curve changes. Aims. Obtaining new set of photometric and spectroscopic observations, we analysed them together with the older spectroscopic and photometric data to build model of this eclipsing system with respect to observed changes of O-C diagram and light curve. Methods. Reduction of new spectra was carried out in the IRAF and SPEFO programs. Radial velocities were d…
AR Aur is the only eclipsing binary known to contain a HgMn star, making it an ideal case for a detailed study of the HgMn phenomenon. HgMn stars are a poorly understood class of chemically peculiar stars, which have traditionally been thought not to possess significant magnetic fields. However, the recent discovery of line profile variability in some HgMn stars, apparently attributable to surface abundance patches, has brought this belief into question. In this paper we investigate the chemical abundances, line profile variability, and magnetic field of the primary and secondary of the AR Aur…
BG Gem is an eclipsing binary with a 91.6-day orbital period. The more massive primary component does not seem to show absorption lines in the spectrum, while the less massive secondary is thought to be a K-type star, possibly a supergiant. These results were obtained with optical low-resolution spectroscopy and photometry. The primary was suggested to be a black hole, although with a low confidence. We present a high-resolution optical spectrum of the system along with new BVR-photometry. Analysis of the spectrum shows that the K-type star rotates rapidly at v sin i = 18 km/s compared to most…
The Super Wide Angle Search for Planets (SuperWASP) is a whole-sky high-cadence optical survey which has searched for exoplanetary transit signatures since 2004. Its archive contains long-term light curves for ~30 million 8-15 V magnitude stars, making it a valuable serendipitous resource for variable star research. We have concentrated on the evidence it provides for eclipsing binaries, in particular those exhibiting orbital period variations, and have developed custom tools to measure periods precisely and detect period changes reliably. Amongst our results are: a collection of 143 candidate…
The Kepler spacecraft has been monitoring the light from 150,000 stars in its primary quest to detect transiting exoplanets. Here we report on the detection of an eclipsing stellar hierarchical triple, identified in the Kepler photometry. KOI-126 (A,(B, C)), is composed of a low-mass binary (masses M_B = 0.2413+/-0.0030 M_Sun, M_C = 0.2127+/-0.0026 M_Sun; radii R_B = 0.2543+/-0.0014 R_Sun, R_C = 0.2318+/-0.0013 R_Sun; orbital period P_1 = 1.76713+/-0.00019 days) on an eccentric orbit about a third star (mass M_A = 1.347+/-0.032 M_Sun; radius R_A = 2.0254+/-0.0098 R_Sun; period of orbit around …
YY Gem is a short-period eclipsing binary system containing two nearly identical, rapidly rotating, very active early-M dwarfs. This binary represents an important benchmark system for calibrating empirical relations between fundamental properties of low-mass stars and for testing theories of interior structure and evolution of these objects. Both components of YY Gem exhibit inflated radii, which has been attributed to poorly understood magnetic activity effects. Despite a long history of magnetic activity studies of this system no direct magnetic field measurements have been made for it. Her…
The eclipsing binary CM Dra contains nearly identical red dwarfs of spectral class dM4.5. Their masses and radii have been reported with unprecedentedly small statistical errors. When compared with standard stellar models of appropriate age (\approx4 Gyr), the empirical results indicate that both components are larger in R, and lower in luminosity L, by several standard deviations. Here, we attempt at first to model the components in the context of standard stellar models using differ
Aims. We present new photometry of the faint and poorly studied cataclysmic variable SDSS J152419.33+220920.0, analyze its light curve and provide an accurate ephemeris for this system. Methods. Time-resolved CCD differential photometry was carried out using the 1.5m and 0.84m telescopes at the Observatorio Astronomico Nacional at San Pedro Martir. Results. From time-resolved photometry of the system obtained during six nights (covering more than twenty primary eclipse cycles in more than three years), we show that this binary presents a strong primary and a weak secondary modulation. Our ligh…
We present the results of our study of the eclipsing binary systems CSS J112237.1+395219, LINEAR 1286561 and LINEAR 2602707 based on new CCD $B$, $V$, $R_c$ and $I_c$ complete light curves. The ultra-short period nature of the stars \citep{Drake2014} is confirmed and the system's periods are revised. The light curves were modelled using the 2005 version of the Wilson-Devinney code. When necessary, cool spots on the surface of the primary component were introduced to account for asymmetries in the light curves. As a result, we found that CSS J112237.1+395219 is a W UMa type contact binary syste…
Eclipsing post-common envelope binaries are highly important for resolving the poorly understood, very short-lived common envelope phase. Most hot subdwarfs (sdO/Bs) are the bare He-burning cores of red giants which have lost almost all of their hydrogen envelopes. This mass loss is often triggered by common envelope interactions with close stellar or even sub-stellar companions. In the recently published catalog of eclipsing binaries in the Galactic Bulge and in the ATLAS survey, we discovered 161 new eclipsing systems showing a reflection effect by visual inspection of the light curves and u…
We present new photometric observations of eclipsing binary systems V1241 Tau and GQ Dra. We use the following methodology: Initially, WD code is applied to the light curves, in order to determine the photometric elements of the systems. Then the residuals are analysed using Fourier Transformation techniques. The results show that one frequency can be barely attributed to the residual light variation of V1241 Tau, while there is no evidence of pulsation on the light curve of GQ Dra.
We present the results of our search for variable stars using the long-term Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) monitoring of white dwarf ZTF J0139+5245 with the two 1.0-m telescope nodes located at McDonald Observatory using the Sinistro imaging instrument. In this search, we find 38 variable sources, of which 27 are newly discovered or newly classified (71%) based on comparisons with previously published catalogs, thereby increasing the number of detections in the field-of-view under consideration by a factor of $\approx$ 2.5. We find that the improved photometric precision per-exposure due to lon…
Pulsating stars in eclipsing binary systems are powerful tools to test stellar models. Binarity enables to constrain the pulsating component physical parameters, whose knowledge drastically improves the input physics for asteroseismic studies. The study of stellar oscillations allows us, in its turn, to improve our understanding of stellar interiors and evolution. The space mission CoRoT discovered several promising objects suitable for these studies, which have been photometrically observed with unprecedented accuracy, but needed spectroscopic follow-up. A promising target was the relatively …
With the prevalence of wide-field, time-domain photometric sky surveys, the number of eclipsing white dwarf systems being discovered is increasing dramatically. An efficient method to follow these up will be key to determining any population trends and finding any particularly interesting examples. We demonstrate that multi-band eclipse photometry of binaries containing a white dwarf and an M~dwarf can be used to determine the masses and temperatures of the white dwarfs to better than 5 per cent. For the M~dwarfs we measure their parameters to a precision of better than 6 per cent with the unc…
The available photometry from the online databases were used for the first light curve analysis of eight eclipsing binary systems EI Aur, XY Dra, BP Dra, DD Her, VX Lac, WX Lib, RZ Lyn, and TY Tri. All these stars are of Algol-type, having the detached components and the orbital periods from 0.92 to 6.8 days. For the systems EI Aur and BP Dra the large amount of the third light was detected during the light curve solution. Moreover, 468 new times of minima for these binaries were derived, trying to identify the period variations. For the systems XY Dra and VX Lac the third bodies were detected…
The available minima timings of 14 selected eclipsing binaries (V1297 Cas, HD 24105, KU Aur, GU CMa, GH Mon, AZ Vel, DI Lyn, DK Her, GQ Dra, V624 Her, V1134 Her, KIC 6187893, V1928 Aql, V2486 Cyg) were collected and analyzed. Using the automatic telescopes, surveys, and satellite data, we derived more than 2500 times of eclipses, accompanied with our own ground-based observations. These data were used to detect the period variations in these multiple systems. The eclipse timing variations were described using the third-body hypothesis and the light-time effect. Their respective periods were de…
HD 181068 is the brighter of the two known triply eclipsing hierarchical triple stars in the Kepler field. It has been continuously observed for more than 2 years with the Kepler space telescope. Of the nine quarters of the data, three have been obtained in short-cadence mode, that is one point per 58.9 s. Here we analyse this unique dataset to determine absolute physical parameters (most importantly the masses and radii) and full orbital configuration using a sophisticated novel approach. We measure eclipse timing variations (ETVs), which are then combined with the single-lined radial velocit…
The majority of binary stars do not eclipse. Current searches for transiting circumbinary planets concentrate on eclipsing binaries, and are therefore restricted to a small fraction of potential hosts. We investigate the concept of finding planets transiting non-eclipsing binaries, whose geometry would require mutually inclined planes. Using an N-body code we explore how the number and sequence of transits vary as functions of observing time and orbital parameters. The concept is then generalised thanks to a suite of simulated circumbinary systems. Binaries are constructed from RV surveys of t…
Evolution of binary objects under the influence of tides drastically affects the expected observational properties of the system. With the discovery of a large number of close-in hot Jupiter systems and eclipsing binaries from missions such as Kepler and TESS, it has become imperative to understand the extent of tidal influence on their formation and observed properties. In the case of binary systems, an efficient tidal dissipation can lead to either spin up or spin down of the stars and/or spin-orbit synchronization, depending upon the exchange of angular momentum between the star and the orb…
We introduce the BEBOP radial velocity survey for circumbinary planets. We initiated this survey using the CORALIE spectrograph on the Swiss Euler Telescope at La Silla, Chile. An intensive four year observing campaign commenced in 2013, targeting 47 single-lined eclipsing binaries drawn from the EBLM survey for low mass eclipsing binaries. Our specific use of binaries with faint M dwarf companions avoids spectral contamination, providing observing conditions akin to single stars. By combining new BEBOP observations with existing ones from the EBLM programme, we report on the results of 1519 r…
We review the method NAV (New Algol Variable) first introduced in 2012Ap.....55..536A, which uses the locally-dependent shapes of eclipses in an addition to the trigonometric polynomial of the second order (which typically describes the "out-of-eclipse" part of the light curve with effects of reflection, ellipticity and O'Connell). Eclipsing binary stars are believed to show distinct eclipses only if belonging to the EA type. With a decreasing eclipse width, the statistically optimal value of the trigonometric polynomial s (2003ASPC..292..391A) drastically increases from ~2 for elliptic (EL) v…
Phenomenological modeling of variable stars allows determination of a set of the parameters, which are needed for classification in the "General Catalogue of Variable Stars" and similar catalogs. We apply a recent method NAV ("New Algol Variable") to eclipsing binary stars of different types. Although all periodic functions may be represented as Fourier series with an infinite number of coefficients, this is impossible for a finite number of the observations. Thus one may use a restricted Fourier series, i.e. a trigonometric polynomial (TP) of order s either for fitting the light curve, or to …
