The upgrade of the Swiss Light Source, called SLS 2.0, is scheduled for 2023-24. The current storage ring will be replaced by one based on multi-bend achromats, allowing for about 30 times higher brightness. Due to the stronger focusing and the required chromatic compensation, finding a reasonably large dynamic aperture (DA) for injection, as well as an energy acceptance for a sufficient beam lifetime, is challenging. In order to maximize the DA and prolong the beam lifetime, we combine the well-known tracking code tracy with a massively parallel implementation of a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA), and further extend this with constraint-handling methods. We then optimize the magnet configuration for two lattices: the lattice that will be used in the commissioning phase (phase-1), and the lattice that will be used afterwards, in the completion phase (phase-2). Finally, we show and further analyze the chosen magnet configurations and in the case of the phase-1 lattice compare it to a pre-existing, manually optimized solution.
Recently proposed novel idea of "crabbed waist" beam-beam collisions will be tested at DAFNE during the collider run for the Siddharta experiment. In order to achieve the goal luminosity, large dynamic aperture is a matter of primary importance. A new method of a dynamic aperture optimization based on step-by-step chromaticity compensation with choosing the "best" sextupole pair at each step was applied to the DAFNE upgrade lattice. Several tune points were considered taking into account both high luminosity and large dynamic aperture. Algorithm and results of optimization will be presented.
MQXC is a Nb-Ti quadrupole designed to meet the accelerator quality requirements needed for the phase-1 LHC upgrade, now superseded by the high luminosity upgrade foreseen in 2021. The 2-m-long model magnet was tested at room temperature and 1.9 K. The technology developed for this magnet is relevant for other magnets currently under development for the high-luminosity upgrade, namely D1 (at KEK) and the large aperture twin quadrupole Q4 (at CEA). In this paper we present MQXC test results, some of the specialized heat extraction features, spot heaters, temperature sensor mounting and voltage …
A multi-objective genetic algorithm is developed for optimizing nonlinearities in diffraction limited storage rings. This algorithm determines sextupole and octupole strengths for chromaticity correction that deliver optimized dynamic aperture and beam lifetime. The algorithm makes use of dominance constraints to breed desirable properties into the early generations. The momentum aperture is optimized indirectly by constraining the chromatic tune footprint and optimizing the off-energy dynamic aperture. The result is an effective and computationally efficient technique for correcting chromatic…
The timing system of the Swiss Light Source is based on the event system concept of APS, Argonne [1]. However, for SLS the hardware was completely redesigned while preserving the software compatibility with the APS system. This gave us a head start in the implementation: we could use the latest available hardware and take advantage of the features integrated in the EPICS software. The event system is used as the sole timing distribution method, for hardware trigger delivery (assisted with a high-precision delay at a few places) and for controlling all the timing-related tasks of operation: inj…
The SSRL is investigating an accelerator upgrade project to replace the present 130 nm rad FODO lattice with an 18 nm rad double bend achromat lattice: SPEAR 3. In this paper, we review the methods used to maximize the SPEAR 3 dynamic aperture including optimization of linear optics, betatron tune, chromaticity and coupling correction, and effects of machine errors and insertion devices.
The present FNAL H- injector has been operational since the 1970s and consists of two magnetron H- sources and two 750 keV Cockcroft-Walton Accelerators. In the upgrade, both slit-type magnetron sources will be replaced with circular aperture sources, and the Cockcroft-Waltons with a 200 MHz RFQ (radio frequency quadrupole). Operational experience at BNL (Brookhaven National Laboratory) has shown that the upgraded source and RFQ will be more reliable, improve beam quality and require less manpower than the present system.
The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory is investigating an accelerator upgrade project that would replace the present 130 nm rad FODO lattice with an 18 nm rad double bend achromat (DBA) lattice: SPEAR 3. The low emittance design yields a high brightness beam, but the stronger focusing in the DBA lattice increases chromaticity and beam sensitivity to machine errors. To ensure efficient injection and long Touschek lifetime, an optimization of the design lattice and dynamic aperture has been performed. In this paper, we review the methods used to maximize the SPEAR 3 dynamic aperture incl…
The Fermilab booster has an intensity upgrade plan called the Proton Improvement plan (PIP). The flux throughput goal is 2E17 protons/hour, which is almost double the current operation at 1.1E17 protons/hour. The beam loss in the machine is going to be the source of issues. The booster accelerates beam from 400 MeV to 8 GeV and extracts to the Main Injector. Several percent of the beam is lost within 3 msec after the injection. The aperture at injection energy was measured and compared with the survey data. The magnets are going to be realigned in March 2012 in order to increase the aperture. …
Currently there is a Proposed FNAL 750keV Injector Upgrade for the replacement of the 40 year old Fermi National Laboratory (FNAL) Cockcroft-Walton accelerators with a new ion source and 200MHz Radio Frequency Quadruple (RFQ). The slit type magnetron being used now will be replaced with a round aperture magnetron similar to the one used at Brookhaven National Lab (BNL). Operational experience from BNL has shown that this type of source is more reliable with a longer lifetime due to better power efficiency. The current source development effort is to produce a reliable source with >60mA of H- b…
The generation and capture of polarized positrons at a source with a superconducting helical undulator having 4.3 cm period and 500 GeV electron drive beam have been simulated. The positron polarization has been calculated for the different undulator K values (up to K = 2.5). Without applying a photon collimator, the maximal polarization of positrons is about 25% for 231 meters active magnet length of undulator with K = 0.7. Using an undulator with K = 2.5 and a collimator with an aperture radius of 0.9 mm results in increase of positron polarization to 54%. The energy deposition, temperature …
The new FNAL 750keV injector upgrade for the replacement of the 40 year old Fermi National Laboratory (FNAL) Cockcroft-Walton accelerators with a new ion source and 200MHz Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) and Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT), has been built and is now being tested prior to installation during the 2012 shutdown. The new H- ion source is a round aperture magnetron which was developed at Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) by Jim Alessi. Operational experience from BNL has shown that this type of source is more reliable with a longer lifetime (on th…
The SPEAR 3 upgrade lattice will provide much reduced beam emittance to increase the brightness of synchrotron radiation beams from wigglers and undulators. Seven existing insertion devices will be used in the lattice. In this paper we review the wiggler parameters, outline the wiggler compensation scheme, and evaluate wiggler effect on the optics and dynamic aperture.
Modern synchrotron light source storage rings, such as the Swiss Light Source upgrade (SLS 2.0), use multi-bend achromats in their arc segments to achieve unprecedented brilliance. This performance comes at the cost of increased focusing requirements, which in turn require stronger sextupole and higher-order multipole fields for compensation and lead to a considerable decrease in the dynamic aperture and/or energy acceptance. In this paper, to increase these two quantities, a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is combined with a modified version of the well-known tracking code tracy. As …
With the new GSI High Current Injector, the beam pulse intensity will be increased by more than two orders of magnitude. The high beam power and the short stopping range at particle energies below 12 MeV/u can destroy accelerator components even during a single beam pulse. Therefore, the operation of the whole accelerator facility has required major changes in hardware, software and operating strategy. A sophisticated beam diagnostic system is indispensable for a safe operation. Preferably non-destructive devices were installed. Destructive elements, e.g. beam stoppers, slits, apertures, were …
The magnetic design is a basic aspect of the superconducting magnets for particle accelerators. When dealing with single aperture cos-theta type dipoles, at the first order, the design can be performed with an analytic approach based on a sector dipole approximation followed by a numerical optimization. For double aperture dipoles the magnetic cross-talk between apertures makes this approach unfeasible. We have developed a semi-analytic model, which starting from a sector dipole approximation, allows to consider the cross-talk between the two apertures. We also demonstrate that the iron yoke c…
The Advanced Photon Source is in the process of up-grading its storage ring from a double-bend to a multi-bend lattice as part of the APS Upgrade Project (APS-U). A swap-out injection scheme is planned for the APS-U to keep a constant beam current and to enable a small dynamic aperture. A novel concept that cancels out the effect of leakage field inside the stored beam chamber was introduced in the design of the septum magnet. As a result, the horizontal deflecting angle of the stored beam was reduced to below 1 micro-rad with a 2 mm septum thick-ness and 1.06T normal injection field. The conc…
Radio frequency (RF) cavities are commonly used to accelerate charged particle beams. The shape of the RF cavity determines the resonant electromagnetic fields and frequencies, which need to satisfy a variety of requirements for a stable and efficient acceleration of the beam. For example, the accelerating frequency has to match a given target frequency, the shunt impedance usually has to be maximized, and the interaction of higher order modes with the beam minimized. In this paper we formulate such problems as constrained multi-objective shape optimization problems, use a massively parallel i…
Halo dynamics influences global accelerator performance: beam lifetimes, emittance growth, dynamic aperture, and collimation efficiency. Halo monitoring and control are also critical for the operation of high-power machines. For instance, in the high-luminosity upgrade of the LHC, the energy stored in the beam tails may reach several megajoules. Fast losses can result in superconducting magnet quenches, magnet damage, or even collimator deformation. The need arises to measure the beam halo and to remove it at controllable rates. In the Tevatron and in the LHC, halo population densities and dif…
The FNAL accelerator complex is poised to reach MW neutrino beams on target for the exploration of the dark sector physics and rare physics program spaces. Future operations of the complex will include CW linac operations at beam intensities that have not been seen before \cite{PIP2,RCS_LOI}. The ambitious beam program relies on multi-turn H$^{-}$ injection into the FNAL Booster and then extracted into delivery rings or the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) 8 GeV HEP program. A new rapid-cycling synchrotron (RCS) will be required to reach the LBNF goal of 2.4 MW because of intense space-charge limit…
In recent years, a new generation of storage ring based light sources, known as diffraction limited storage rings (DLSRs), whose emittance approaches the diffraction limit for the range of X ray wavelengths of interest to the scientific community, has garnered significant attention worldwide. Researchers have begun to design and build DLSRs. Among various DLSR proposals, the hybrid multibend achromat (HMBA) lattice enables sextupole strengths to be maintained at a reasonable level when minimizing the emittance; hence, it has been adopted in many DLSR designs. Based on the H7BA lattice, the des…
